These are all just rumors, but for those of you lucky enough to play the
Warhawk beta, this should be good news for you and even better news for those of us who were already excited to get our online battles on. The site
posting these rumors is getting a ton of hate, but we're giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that there are, in fact, changes happening between the beta and final release. Whether the changes are those mentioned below or not, we can't say for sure.
- Huge graphical update
- Expanded matches -- 32 vs 32 rather than 32 max players
- Plenty of downloadable content upon launch in addition to bare-bones game
- Six new weapons
- Four new vehicles
Hmm, something smells fishy. It's like they took one piece of news that was probably true (graphical update), then spiced it up with other bits of news that
would be rather unbelievable. Following the
recent IGN interview, it seems that may be the case. In all, though, rumors are rumors, so we'll go ahead and keep them filed next to our lollipop notebook and chocolate hologram disc full of skittles. We love candy.
[Thanks, Joe!]

Of all the big games coming to the PS3, which this is supposed to be one of them, I think it looks awful. I've been playing better looking games, like Battlefield 2, on the PC for years. Can someone tell me why this game is supposed to be that great? Is it the size of the battlefields? Number of units on screen? I don't get it.
Stef Geiger @ Jul 16th 2007 10:45AM
BULL.
Well, SOME of it may be true. Apparently one of the developers said that they've already made some serious graphical improvements over the beta build on one of the boards a while ago. I'm seriously doubtful about them going to 64 players - I'm lucky to fine ONE server with a suitable ping with 32 players as it is. Also, they'd have to make some serious changes if the added new weapons since they've kind of maxed out the buttons for selecting them (a brilliant system, though)

THEY NEED TO FICKS THE AK-47!!!!!
the handgun takes more energy for some reason and on the forums they suggested parachutes which would be awesome

We can only hope the final product will improve over the beta, but I don't think there will be this kind of improvement. Probably graphics update (Even though the screenshots look awesome at this point), and I hope new vehicles, because judging from the screens there were only three (Tank, Jeep, Warhawk), weapons maybe, but I doubt they'll be going 64 players. (If they do though, it'll be great, but I'm not getting my hopes up on it)
KingOfGods @ Jul 16th 2007 10:55AM
Is the beta still going on? I can never sign in to play it but have no trouble playing games online like Rainbow Six.

"Of all the big games coming to the PS3, which this is supposed to be one of them, I think it looks awful."
I thought the same thing until I actually got into the beta. Once you play it, I think you'll understand. The world/battlegrounds are just SOOO expansive, and there are so many different approaches to how you can play - it's just amazing. Once you see it all in motion, I think you'll be impressed. I haven't seen any other games (PC or 360) that pull off quite the same experience as this game.
If I didn't have so many friends w/ 360s who are planning to get Halo 3, I would (based on the respective demos) never touch Halo 3 if I had the option of playing Warhawk.
wonway01 @ Jul 16th 2007 11:00AM
I was in the beta and if they can fix the lock ups which I assume would be before it was released, this game will be great. I know screens might not look like its the most graphicaly advanced but in game I thought it was freaking cool. Looks great, plays great. Framerates fly no matter what was going on. I think if they didnt change a thing it will be a very well liked game to say the least. It getting any better is all gravy.
TORO @ Jul 16th 2007 11:18AM
It looks like umm...not that good. I'll see you on H3 John Ray!
Joe @ Jul 16th 2007 11:39AM
The stuff sbout the weapons and vehicles I think could happen and for the graphics I know it will look better from what I heard at E3 it even looked a little better.
OrganicShadow @ Jul 16th 2007 11:40AM
I think more vehicles is definitely possible.
Just a tank and a jeep? THAT'S IT? Seriously, we could use an apc, mobile AA, or even a dual-person bike with the little side carriage thing with a machine gun on it.
Not really sure why people insist on BF2 looking better than this game. Warhawk has BF2 beat as far as smoothness, draw distance, and overall polish is concerned. Especially when you see it in motion like the IGN direct feed video they put up a while back. This is one of those games where you really have to get some hands on time before passing it off as a BF2 rip off or a "quickie".
Darkdrium777 @ Jul 16th 2007 11:58AM
#10: Well that's all I saw on the screenshots; the truck, the tank and the plane. Of course I'm not including the turrets in it, I think there is two of those (A four cannon thingy and something that apparently shoots missiles). I haven't seen a boat or a bike or some anti air or other heavy artillery vehicles though, so I'm assuming these were the only vehicles in the game. I really hope I'm wrong.
Toby @ Jul 16th 2007 12:11PM
They were testing 64 player maps, but dylan never let us beta testers in on too much info about them. they did say that the graphics werent representative of the final product, and i felt they were fine as they were so it can only get better.
the true fun in this game is with the split screen. 4 people playing online in the same room in a ton of fun thats hard to describe. whether its working together or fighting, its amazing.
Lp47 @ Jul 16th 2007 2:46PM
It's not a bad rumour.
Jake @ Jul 16th 2007 2:11PM
I can back up what Toby said about them testing 64 player rounds. They were invite-only during the beta, and of course all were official Sony servers. I wouldn't doubt it they included them in the final version of the game.
Brian Spence,
I've been playing BF2 since it came out, and I agree that I think it's prettier. I really think it's just a personal bias for realistic-looking things though. Warhawk looks almost cartoony in comparison, but seeing it in motion is definitely different than looking at screenshots. I was very impressed to see not a hint of slowdown when all 32 players were concentrated in one area blasting away. It has a distinct look that is beautiful in its own way. It also doesn't hurt that the maps are fantastic with respect to both art and layout.
mccomber @ Jul 16th 2007 2:52PM
It's funny, we have a game with a great visual style like Warhawk, and it gets blasted for not looking real enough. Then you have games that look real, and people complain they look too grey/brown and flat. Considering how smoothly it always ran and the fact that everything looked pretty good for what the game is when I played, I think it's fine. It's an arcade sort of shooter, so the graphics work for it really well.
As for the rest, new vehicles would be cool (digging the bike with sidecar idea) but weapons would be overkill, there's already plenty in the game and as others have said the weapon selection system is already full and perfect. 32 vs 32 matches would be stellar as well.
Really, as long as the lockups and disconnects from the beta get fixed (which I'm sure they will) this is a must-buy ps3 game for me.
never$$hort @ Jul 16th 2007 3:40PM
This game really does look kick-ass in action. I haven't played the beta but have seen all the trailers in HD thru the PSN and it looks much more appealing to me than Halo 2.5, ummm I meant Halo 3.
Consolcwby @ Jul 16th 2007 8:21PM
Looking at all these comments makes me think that a Mad Max MMO shooter would be great! =D (Just think about customizing every vehicle and weapon - from cars and buggies to trains and helicopters!) =o i think that would be the shits... as for how THIS game looks, it looks okay. It probably plays better than it looks, and THAT is much more important IMHO. =)
Scruge @ Aug 28th 2007 8:19PM
uh, Corbin, sorry to say, but halo 3 looks exactly like halo 2.
i see no difference except maybe the gay ripoff of the bad guy in lost planet they made master chief look like.
and watchin this video of this, concerning bf2
the maps look WAY better than ANY bf2 map, the flying looks like a hell of alot more fun.
i think bf2 (and halo) dont have SH*T on this game
