Hands-on: The Eye of Judgment

To put it briefly, The Eye of Judgment is Magic: The Gathering meets Tic-Tac-Toe. The upcoming Eye-enabled card game has players using real cards on a real board, trying to gain the most territory on a 3x3 grid. The fusion of real cards and a virtual environment might echo thoughts of Yu-Gi-Oh ... and for fans of card games, that's bound to be a good thing.

There's a surprising amount of depth to the card battles from the demonstration we tried. Ultimately, players will want to have the best monsters, but there are a number of variables that can drastically change a battle. For example, each square on the board is aligned with a different elemental. Aligning one's monster to these elements is crucial. Each monster has specific directions it can attack in, so positioning one's card is also significant, especially in a field as small as this one.

Players will want to purchase real-life expansion packs in order to get further in the game. Sure, it may sound expensive, but any CCG junkie can attest to how pricey of a hobby this can be. The Eye integration certainly is intriguing, and we're sure The Eye of Judgment will secure a dedicated hardcore fan base. For those that are interested, we recommend playing the game offline with a friend. In order to prevent online cheating, gamers will have to scan all their cards before an online match. Afterwards, the computer will deal a hand to each player. It seems like a somewhat cumbersome process, and it downplays the "real world" aspect of the game ... and isn't that what makes this game so unique?

yu-gi oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! sorry to say it wont be long till yu gi ooooooh, magic, dungens and dragons find its way over.im sure nintendo is gonna copy this for there golden child poke'mooooooooooooooooooooooooon! but i could be wrong you never know. so i guess sony is back with reaching a wide audience. wtf am i talking about they never left.

Huh, interesting. I was really expecting a more Der Langrisser take on it, meshing SRPG with Card battles. If no one's played Der Langrisser, battles between characters were a bit different from standard SRPGs -- each character had a group of troops and... well... a more localized comparison might be Advanced Wars.

Fire Emblem with cards, minus the cumbersome map-walking, even. Great hands on, though! I'm definitely looking forward to this and I hate card games.

...I asked Gamestop about this game and they vaguely said it came packaged with the PlayStation Eye. I'm pretty sure they were sick of my inquiries, though.

I was a big spellfire player back in the day... it would be awesome to have a game as big/deep as that with this type of play. That would have been the coolest thing ever.

I will have to know more before I decide on this, but somehow I just dont think the deck will be "serious" enough if you get that. Not like a real card game player's card game. But Yeah, imagine magic the gathering like this and thats really cool.

I could see this revolutionizing the card game industry.

What an excellent write up! A fairly deep CCG is something I can't play in RL, since I have only one friend and he likes his 'bored-games' - so I can't wait to see the online capabilities! (although I'm going to try to convince him this is more of a boardgame than a card game!) =D I'm excited about this game, and can't wait to see it in action, especially since I want the new eye toy! I am still planning to spend my hard earned $$$ on Rock Band first... But THIS will be different!
