The truth about PSP Lite's battery life

The upcoming PSP Lite will include a smaller battery for the smaller system. The battery that's included with the system will run for about 5 hours while gaming. However, if you have the battery from your original PSP, you'll be able to get 8-10 hours. The problem with this solution? The battery will bulge out of the system. Sony will offer a new backplate for those interested in adding the old battery to the new system.
Does that make things clearer?

I think it is reasonable to assume that either Sony or 3rd plart developers or both will release a smaller form factor battery that has the same amount of power output as the orginal psp. Yes, no maybe?
Don @ Jul 19th 2007 12:14AM
Sony should not have said that the battery life was longer, if you have to buy ANOTHER battery to have a longer life. There's a 3rd party battery that doubles the current PSP battery life, but it clamps over the entire back of the unit:
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/third-party-battery-promises-15-hours-of-play-at-a-cost/
Would it be right for Sony to advertise that the current PSP has a 15 hour battery life then? No, of course not. That's why it's not acceptable for them to claim the PSP Slim has a longer battery life when it doesn't out of the box.
While the old-battery-in-PSP-Slim is not quite as bad as this:
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/01/05/this-is-how-not-to-extend-battery-life/
It will still make the Slim lopsided.... no thanks.
BeDammit @ Jul 19th 2007 12:25AM
Your Hyundai will run faster with a Ferrari engine and a hole cut in the hood.
snake79 @ Jul 19th 2007 12:41AM
the backplate should come together with the console for free. That's what I want to hear.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jul 19th 2007 1:29AM
yeah that'd be nice to have snake79....but this is Sony we're talking about. If they're not including the TV-Out cable, what are the odds they would've included this?
Makiyura @ Jul 19th 2007 1:35AM
woah this is stupid, why make the battery life last less that the old one, something is up! Again Sony is thinking we're dumb and will buy it without knowing the handheld inside out, ha i guess they are going to get a rude awakening
P.S : IM STIL GETIN' A SLIM!
JayFight @ Jul 19th 2007 2:31AM
@ kingofwale bedammit was on topic or at least thats the impresion i got meaning yeah the psp slim works better with the old battery sticking out just like a hyundai would work better with a furrari engine popping out of the hood but then who would want to do either of those just for better performance when it makes the whole package ugly and lopsided or someother such thing as that btw i need a new psp and now that i know there is a slim coming out i just might delay getting a new one till then. but ...we'll see
Abscissa @ Jul 19th 2007 3:24AM
@kingofwale: His post WAS on-topic. Time to learn about analogies, perhaps?
Benzitor @ Jul 19th 2007 4:04AM
I guess that it wont take too much time before a third party producer release a thin format battery with amazing durability. I actualy own a 2500ma for the first one, with no extra size...it fits perfectly....and my friend ordered in hongkong a 3200ma, same size as original. So if they release those 1800, 2200, 2500, or even 3200, in original psp format, i guess they will at least release a 1800, 2200 or even 2500, in slim format, faster than we think. They should be fool if they would not, it could be a gold mine.
Imagine, my 2500, allow me a 7-8 hours playback video, and almost 9h gaming...What could it be on the new psp....10-11 video, and 12h gaming ??? A BLAST
Iother @ Jul 19th 2007 10:45AM
Hmmz those extra capacity batteries are often selected ones, so if you sell 10-100k of them it's not a problem if you want to sell millions of them you'll need another market where you can get ride of the remaining batteries.
And those extra large capacities often come without warranty.
Hector Martinez @ Jul 19th 2007 9:28AM
You can get extended battery life from third (and first?) parties now without having to bulge out your system. That, and I get to keep my homebrew. Pass.
pixelator @ Jul 19th 2007 10:05AM
It's true, Sony reps again flapping their traps and making fools of themselves. Between Kaz denying everything (like the revamped PSP) and Koller just not knowing jack shit about the PSP... They shouldn't have claimed 8-10hr battery life for the PSP Slim when you can't do that without using an 1800mAh out of the original PSP. Quite stupid.
That said, coolness. I have a 2200mAh and original 1800mAh. My new PSP Slim will have its battery needs well covered as soon as they make the new hatch available (launch?). I'm more enthused about the new PSP every time I think about it. I just hope the newness is sufficiently new to stir up some unit and software sales so we don't get more 'coming for everything BUT PSP' announcements.
No news of this kind would be complete without the requisite whining, of course. Right? Sony should really have included video cables. Because, you know, Nintendo included a Super Gameboy TV out with their Gameboy, a component video cable with their Wii and of course Sega and NEC included the optional TV out modules with THEIR handhelds, right? C'mon, Sony! Give us an 80GB HDD internal PSP with 20hr battery life for $49.99!
Don't get me worng, Sony sucks. They just don't suck for the reasons some people think they do.
cheezorg @ Jul 19th 2007 1:42PM
Nice one BeDammit. The rest of us got your joke and it makes a good point. kingofwales needs to lighten up. Attacking commenters for having a sense of humor is the perfect way to drive people away.
I'm hoping that at least some of the battery saving features are software related and could be available in the next firmware, which would mean better battery life for all... assuming you run the official Sony firmware or can wait until we have an OE/IE/M33 version of it.
PostedOval @ Jul 19th 2007 1:09PM
I never had a problem with the battery life of the original PSP... I guess I don't use it for 6~8 hours every single day. Plus I am always near an outlet.
nate @ Jul 19th 2007 2:00PM
Does Sony even want us to buy this thing?!
ninjakamster @ Jul 19th 2007 4:01PM
I'm worried, with the new battery cover to cover up the thicker battery, there'll be a small hump on the back just like on the current PSPs but not on the other side. Are they making a new battery cover or all new backplate to install over the bigger battery? Will it be easy to install?
edub @ Jul 19th 2007 5:14PM
If someone can find the old psp manual and look it up you should see the amount of battery life.
edub @ Jul 19th 2007 5:38PM
Correction: If someone can find the old psp manual and look it up you should see the same amount of battery life stated in the slim psp manual.
Morzas @ Jul 19th 2007 11:52PM
Doesn't make it any less lame :(
Spotpuff @ Jul 20th 2007 10:23AM
This is possibly the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Nintendo redesigns console, improves every aspect of it.
Sony redesigns console, improves almost nothing, claims longer battery life when it's actually the same unless you want to uglify your PSP?
Wtf.
jitty @ Jul 20th 2007 4:00PM
This is a huge disappointment IMO. This was one of the main features I was thinking of buying this new psp. But now I have to use my old psp's battery to get better battery life? I've been using the same battery in my old psp for over 2 years. I needed a new one! Now I have to spend another $40 to make this new psp even worth buying for me? How can they improve the battery life and just cancel that out by putting in a smaller capacity battery?!
KingMONTEZuma210 @ Jul 20th 2007 5:02PM
****UDUB IS CORRECT****
The old PSP manual says the same amount of battery life (Game: 3-6 hrs.; Video Playback: 3-5hrs.) as stated in the PSP "Slim & Lite" manual.
****NO MORE WORRIES EVERYONE, THE NEW BATTERY SITUATION IS A NON-FACTOR!!!!****
Kade Storm @ Jul 21st 2007 12:33PM
Ladies. Ladies.
I got the 3200 battery for the old unit - no bulge! Similar can be achieved for the slim edition. Relax. Besides, a mild bulge ain't the end of the world. "Looks ugly," some say. Well, with all due respect, are you playing games on it, or posing infront of the mirror with your new low-rise jeans? Lawl. No, seriously. A massive bulge at the back - sure, that's not cool. A mild lump has your panties in knots? You need therapy, dude. Once again, I am sure third-party sources will come up with a decent solution, as will Sony (I cite the 3200 - 2200 for the original PSP, respectively).

i took my psp last week n today i notice that i hve charged it full still its showing me 3hrs 35 minutes left n showing that battery charging full.so wat can i do
jeffhoye @ Oct 3rd 2007 11:20AM
FYI, The Slim does not accept the old PSP batteries. When you open the box there is a "Peripherals Compatibility Notice" stating this fact. Not wanting to believe this, I popped in my old PSP-280 (2200 mAh) and it will charge, but won't run. Does anyone know if there are extended batteries available for the slim? Thanks!
Kenichero @ Oct 7th 2007 2:32PM
I got one of the slim psp units and I like it. Had an old one I sold to a friend to pay for most of the new one because I’m an arse head but fact is that I like the improvements to it. So it didn’t come with all the stuff that it maybe should have and in all honesty I would have rather seen a unit the same size as the old one with a built in hard drive or something but the fact is it is better. The bulge of the battery pack is not a huge thing. Fact is anyone who is that worried about the way the psp looks should look in a mirror while they play it. Not having a little bulge in the back of it doesn't make you or I any cooler hunched over with head phones on mumbling like psychopaths about how the computer cheats. Actually, chicks dig a little bulge; maybe some people should try it and see what happens.
