Let the speculation begin! Kaz Hirai has tempted us yet again with his fancy words and vague confirmations. He has let slip the new Sixaxis will contain a few more features in addition to the TouchSense rumble capabilities. In fact, he said, "
a variety of other things." Unless he means the TouchSense. In that case, boring! Otherwise, we could see anything from a new set of buttons (L4 and R4, really?) or a remote volume control for game music. Maybe a microphone? How about a magnifying glass? We'd really like to see your most inventive ideas to incorporate into the controller, so why don't you go nuts and give us your "features" to add?

id want a 4.3in LCD screen with a UMD drive so i can play my PSP games on it :)
Toby @ Jul 20th 2007 3:50PM
how about a shock feature that lets a jolt out every time you do something stupid like spam a mic online =D
Luke @ Jul 20th 2007 3:52PM
Two words: Meat Grinder!
coplice @ Jul 20th 2007 3:53PM
i want my controller to look like a boomerang! lol
ac @ Jul 20th 2007 3:54PM
I think they should change the L2 and R2 buttons to be more like the xbox triggers because the triggers always slip out of my hand. And also the analog stick: instead of being round, make it curve inward a bit like the xbox controller because that slips out of my hands when i play super stardust hd.
coplice @ Jul 20th 2007 3:55PM
oops, i posted too fast
i want to be able to throw my boomerang at the TV when am piss off and it come back at me just before hitting the TV !
Xoonaka @ Jul 20th 2007 4:05PM
It's going to get longer battery life and will be 33% lighter
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 20th 2007 4:10PM
The shock feature is a good one. I vote for that one.
How about a breathalyser that can read your blood alcohol level. Or, how about bong attachment, the more you puff the "higher" your character can jump.
KeVil @ Jul 20th 2007 4:27PM
@ac: Maybe less vaseline on the hands and you won't have so much slippage :D
Thomas @ Jul 20th 2007 4:36PM
the first new feature the 6axis should receive is the total and absolute reduction of desync(s) when the controller is working via bluetooth. Thats got to be the first step.. I love the 6axis controller, I love the placement of the buttons, - it's still basically a SNES controller... but before you add more, fix the basics.
... @ Jul 20th 2007 4:36PM
@Kevil
douchebag. j/k...but not really.
the triggers and the thumbsticks are superior on the 360 and it would be nice to have them on the PS3 controller.
the L2 and R2 buttons are nice and springy, but curving them like an actual *gasp* gun would be a greater improvement.
miguelon918 @ Jul 20th 2007 4:37PM
What if they include 1GB of internal memory so i can store music on my sixaxis so i can use it as an mp3 player? =D i like paul's idea =P
steve Johnson @ Jul 20th 2007 4:54PM
What they need is what, astonishingly, no console has done before: They need to have ALL games be able to play with a mouse and keyboard if you wish. I know that once in awhile a game will slip through that has that capability, but if Sony really wants to steal PC gaming's marketshare (and why wouldn't they?), then they're going to need mouse/keyboard capability as an option to play in all games. I mean, if the XMB supports it why doesn't games? Hellllooooooooo???
-SJ
p.s. Don't even talk to me about the Splitfish Frag FX; my friend got one and it's no way NEAR as accurate as a real mouse is. Disappointing.
Ally Mohamed @ Jul 20th 2007 4:57PM
bed pan so I don't have to get up in the middle of resistence online... stupid bladder
Hunter X @ Jul 20th 2007 5:09PM
Let the controller be capable of connecting to the PSP to be played with it, a Screenshot bottom, and let it charge from an outlet, maybe a skip song bottom, and bottom lock?!
apease @ Jul 20th 2007 5:21PM
Two little holes, one on each side of the controller. Seriously. For a wrist strap, so people don't trash their TVs playing High Velocity Bowling.
komrad @ Jul 20th 2007 5:27PM
two track balls underneath, so it can double for a mini rover that can move about independently and play games with you not unlike our old friend 'ROB' the robot from the NES.
Darkdrium777 @ Jul 20th 2007 5:32PM
It's probably gonna get a led light in the PS button so that everyone who modded their old SIXAXIS will be happy. And all the ideas posted before are great xD :D
jazzy_L @ Jul 20th 2007 6:09PM
Maybe the controller should feature touch sencing buttons like the buttons for the eject and power on the ps3. The whole controller can feature this it may be kind of cool.
buildersarse @ Jul 20th 2007 6:17PM
"Maybe less vaseline on the hands and you won't have so much slippage"
lol, well said ;p
Andy @ Jul 20th 2007 6:32PM
@ steve Johnson
Have fun playing Warhawk with a keyboard and mouse.
The L2 and R2 triggers need to be concave in shape because I like the trigger feel but they slip even without Vaseline(tm)
Rob @ Jul 20th 2007 6:35PM
hahaha, how about something like this http://www.ps3world.com/images/ps3_controller.jpg
KillarClown @ Jul 20th 2007 6:50PM
How about adding Kit? He was awesome!

"I think they should change the L2 and R2 buttons to be more like the xbox triggers "
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. 360s triggers suck/hurt.
If you're changing them at all, give us gamecube's triggers
knickf2j @ Jul 21st 2007 2:11AM
how about ya make some more god damn games, the controller is perfectly fine...except for vibration. I must have vibration at all costs.
Alphabetpictures @ Jul 21st 2007 3:28AM
I hope they allow up to 8 players to play in stead of the current 7. Led under the ps button. Ability to charge from wall socket or PC. And advanced memory chip that reads your mind so you never have to change the button settings, it does it for you automatically, and access to the xmb from the screen on the back so you can choose a game to play before the system is on.
JayFight @ Jul 21st 2007 5:52AM
i would like to see the swiss army sixaxis controller with a knife, a saw, sissors, tooth pick, and tweezers then you could go camping with your ps3 and always be prepared just remember to keep it charged cause you can't use the tooth pick when the battery's dead
Galley @ Jul 21st 2007 6:21AM
Make the L2 and R2 buttons identical in size to the L1 and R1 buttons.
Add L4 and R4 triggers underneath for racing games.
steve Johnson @ Jul 21st 2007 7:33AM
@22
What part of the word 'option' don't you understand? I said that Sony should make it an OPTION to use mouse and keyboard if you wish. Warhawk with a mouse and keyboard? Obviously you've never played Halo on a computer. Works perfectly. Same thing with Warhawk.
Curmeo @ Jul 21st 2007 11:09AM
a built-in mic would be nice...
how about a built-in PlayStation Eye cam? i know...let me keep dreaming.
i got 2 Sixaxis controllers right now, but i'll definitely get the new controller just for the nextgen TouchSense rumble.
Conor @ Jul 21st 2007 11:57AM
@31 i agree, infact that's all i would ever want, touchsense + better battery life.
Conor @ Jul 21st 2007 11:59AM
p.s and replace my two "old" PS3 controllers for free! :D
Kal-El @ Jul 21st 2007 12:40PM
How about some new games with it to actually make people want to buy the damn system....
Joe @ Jul 21st 2007 1:17PM
I was reading that it might come out with a keyboard also. I wonder if Sony is thinking about adding that because the 360 will have one soon.
http://gaminginsider.wordpress.com/2007/07/14/new-sixaxis-will-be-a-huge-suprise/
Dave @ Jul 21st 2007 1:20PM
Hey Steve Johnson, I'm hoping for the same thing.
And is it really that much to ask for them to reinsert a technology that has been the standard for the last ten years? (Rumble)
Andy @ Jul 21st 2007 3:14PM
You know how Sony said rumble would interfere with the motion sensing couldn't that be a good thing?
I mean if you get hit by a missile in Warhawk your controller will rumble and the rumbling will cause the controller to shake and so will the plane.
Stephen @ Jul 21st 2007 5:24PM
Two words: Bong attachment.
abc @ Jul 21st 2007 11:12PM
Maybe a speaker...
KHCloud @ Jul 22nd 2007 9:50AM
They should have Ben Heck design the controller.
Esreverse @ Jul 22nd 2007 12:09PM
1. i'd like to see a full body suit added with rfid sensors and the new controller should have a rfid receiver to push sixaxis to the next level by tracking not only the controller movement, but your complete body. (fully body tekken, boxing, crouching, ...)
2. then it should read the pulse of the player to change music and tension of the game accordingly. (about every single game could make use of this)
3. i absolutely agree with the shape of the L2/R2 buttons, but i like the analog sticks.
4. rumble and force feedback added to the analog sticks. (cool for simulations)
5. and finally i'd like to see a mic and a speaker (like the wii) built in.
that's it! :D
Andrew @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:09AM
My predictions.
Three rumble motors.
Force feedback in Control Sticks
User-swappable Battery
Built in Mic
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:54AM
No more buttons, please. How about the ability to remap buttons? I friggin' HATE it when there's only 2 or 3 "configurations" from which to choose. This is next-gen, dammit... let me choose my own layout without needing that functionality explicitly programmed into each game!
Ang @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:21AM
Make the two endy bits detachable so you only use the middle section (like wii pad) for bowling, tennis golf etc.
Hirsbrunner @ Jul 23rd 2007 5:03PM
Sony is still taking apart all of N.'s controllers to see if there's anything else from which they can get inspiration. j/k...but not really.
I'd love to see the bmrng design come back. Looked much more comfortable than what PS1,2,3 is currently using. Thank goodness for the Logitech PS2 wireless controller.
John @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:24PM
Definately re-shape L2 and R2. It's fine for Motorstorm, when I can use my index finger on the gas. But my third and second fingers tend to slip. These fingers are not as strong in most people, so the controller is designed in this respect against the body.
This is my favorite controller, and I like how light it is. I REALLY appreciate 10 bits on the analog, over 8 (gettin sublime with Resistance and GT HD).
Of course I want rumble, but I've only ever kept it on, for one game: Gran Turismo. The feedback is so different for every car (I still remember the way that V6 Honda would torque the front wheels).
I agree that it should be totally configurable, and like the poster said, this is NEXT GEN. In a time of talking about intuitive controls, let's have something that allows total configurability, for any game. A tall order, because now we have to try to enforce those standards for everyone making the game. But why not release a library of code that achieves this, in different ways? This would definately help. While I appreciate the value of learning a particular game's particular controls, some games are so off that I can't play them, like Shadow of the Collosus. If the controls were different, I could have slayed some. But they were too awkward and non-intuitive, and I didn't want to waste too much time re-learning them, feeling that I probably couldn't to satisfaction, anyway.
Whoops.
I can't think of anything else, though
I always thought the boomerang controller had potential, but especially when I saw it in someone's hands and it was smaller than I thought.
The hands were curved naturally, and it looked like it would be much easier to control the analogs accurately and hit the shoulder buttons without having your hand as tweaked out as with the traditional controller.
The boomerang controller didn't fight the body.
And yet most people who saw it had no sense of this, as it was almost always pictured NOT in someone's hands, so we imagined this rather large thing.
I hope it comes back as an option, I'll buy one.
Paranoia @ Jul 24th 2007 11:57AM
A lead weight to make it heavier?
XavierRose3001 @ Aug 2nd 2007 9:52AM
Extra buttons on the back of the pad, with full control over where they're mapped (over the xmb)i could finally jump and throw grenades in fps's without letting my thumb off the right analogue stick...I'm not a fan of the "claw" position...
