Poll Police here, searching desperately for a good question to ask our avid interviewees. With the Summer gaming season coming to a close, our hearts beat in anticipation for the fall and holiday titles -- fifteen exclusives, if we recall the E3 speech correctly. With that in mind, there hasn't been much comparison between consoles for 2008. We know that Sony has a lot planned -- exclusives such as
Final Fantasy XIII may not even hit until 2009 -- but we haven't heard much future-talk from our friends at Nintendo or Microsoft. This leads us to our poll question for this week: Will the PlayStation 3 shine brighter this holiday season with its lush lineup of exclusive titles, or will it burst forth a corona of excellence from its bright core in 2008, casting shadows on the competition? As you can see, metaphors to the sun are popular today.
If you're curious about
last week's poll results, take the jump and see what you, the readers of PS3 Fanboy, have decided to personally dub the rumble-enabled Sixaxis controller. It's not an official naming, but this is what most of you will probably jokingly refer to the controller in our comments section, or to friends who hold the controller in awe of its fantastic new technological capacity.

Not surprisingly, the majority of our Sony enthusiasts hold true to the mantra of "it is better to err on the side of caution" -- as well as the notion that change is not, in fact, always good. Dual Shock 3 is the clear victor in our naming competition, and the votes go right down the line in a pretty linear fashion from there. In fact, if this were a statistics course, the professors would certainly squirm with excitement at these endearingly simplistic results. Or not. Either way, your votes are greatly appreciated and we look forward to your continued participation in our weekly polls!

Where the "PS3 will suck just as much in 08 as it did in 07" option. Im confused.
qwerter @ Jul 22nd 2007 5:40PM
its @ xbox360fanboy, just like were you belong
3cubedminus3squared @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:02PM
I was about to ask the same thing.
j/k.
I think 08 because There's not much going on this year.
linton @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:06PM
The big developers are all getting to grips with sony's hardware now - so i reckon we'll see some fantastic games and features coming our way from september 07 onwards n upwards, the firmware upgrades are coming quicker now so it wont be too long b4 we some damn fine addons for the ps3 menu system and hopefully more playable demo's and less(imo)pointless videos of non ingame footage
Xoonaka @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:11PM
I like Sixaxis better then any of those names. Odds are once they add rumble they won't change the name at all. Like they did with the PSP redesign. It's still just PSP.
No, it's not PSP Lite or PSP Slim. That's just the press trying to be clever.
As far as the new poll goes, I'm sure '08 will be better. A strong '07 holiday season will convince 3rd party developers to invest in it, and then the PS3 will get some real variety. Plus Sony has never made the best games for their consoles, that's usually a 3rd party thing.
Andy @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:29PM
I voted 07 because Fall 07 is when some heavy hitters are landing.
2007 is Sony's internal studios time to shine while 2008 is when some key exclusive and quality made first for PS3 games are coming out.
Shogan @ Jul 22nd 2007 7:11PM
It kinda has to be better in 08... Not bashing the system here, but ALL systems have a rough time of it the first year, and Sony's pricing hasn't helped.
Look at the 360. The first year, most people really weren't interested. Now it's doing great. The Wii, despite it's huge success, really doesn't have a lot of software... yet. Year two for Sony and Nintendo could, and possibly will change the status quo considerably, if handled right.
Microdot @ Jul 22nd 2007 7:43PM
"Look at the 360. The first year, most people really weren't interested. Now it's doing great."
a 65% drop in sales is doing great? hmm.
i think 08... 07 is winding down already. there are some MASSIVE titles coming in the next few months, but the combination of the momentum from that, as well as the HUGE lineup for the 1st quarter, is going to start 08 off with a very large upswing in sales.
the ps3 isnt going to be like the ps2.... there wont be one defining moment in its sales. it will be a builder. every year will be better than the previous. but 08 will see the ps3 pass the 360 for the first time (without a doubt. unless m$ does something massive like drop the premium system down to $159) and depending upon how 3rd party devs do with the wii (which at the moment is still non-existant... and nothing in the works) we may see the ps3 tie up, or possibly even surpass wii sales.
Consolcwby @ Jul 22nd 2007 8:09PM
2008 is the year of the PS3 Beast. Mostly because Middleware solutions for developers, as well as Sony coming to grips with helping 3rd parties out will definately mark the 2006-2007 time frame as a rough patch in an otherwise smooth transition period between the previous generation and this one.
Mark my words, this time next year will be a time of great anticipation and a greater installed user base than most people are expecting. (Actually, 2009 - 2010 will be the best year, but since the poll doesn't ask that, I have to go with 08!) =)
Joe @ Jul 22nd 2007 9:27PM
I think 08 will be a great year.
2008 will see MGS4, White Knight, FFXIII, Killzone, Wipeout and Socom 4 This is the one from Zipper not the other guys.
Plus many more Sony still has not said yet. So I think 08 will be a big year for Sony. So I hope to see many nice things.
CJ @ Jul 22nd 2007 10:55PM
@Microdot
Your name says it all. The type that will bash anything MS just to do so wether youre right or wrong. Sure the 360 sales arent great right this second but its the middle of the summer. Many people already have the 360. Look to see a boost in sales during the fall/winter time frame with the games coming out that are sure winners.
The PS3 will do better in 08 than this year, but I wouldnt say it will surpass Nintendo or the 360. Youre right, the PS3 isnt like the PS2 and will not be as dominate or probably not even close unless Sony decides to do a massive price cut. All MS needs is a decent price cut which will probably start in the fall/winter time. That will be a blow to Sony during the Holiday season. Remember your own guy doesnt think holiday sales are that important. LOL. Im not looking to bash the PS3 and I dont think I am doing so now. I am just saying it how i see it. I personally like the 360 and the games I have had for it so far. I never got into Sony, and never liked their big titles like MGS series. Never appealed to me and always seemed dull. The big thing is I think Live will continue to dominate the online play of the systems. Sony has a ways to go on that, and yes I have a PS3. I thought I would give it a try but I rarely turn it on. Good luck to Sony. With out competition, none of us would get the great games we like to play. Atleast not good quality shit. No competition would mean wed probably be gettings screwed over one way or another. SO I hope Sony does at least well. THat will force MS and Nintendo to continue to work hard at pleasing its fans.
Jase @ Jul 22nd 2007 11:36PM
"unless m$ does something massive like drop the premium system down to $159)"
Hah. Good luck seeing ANY price drop on the 360 soon... with the Billion they've got hanging over their heads because of the RROD's & warranties... Microsoft are aiming to gain a PROFIT by march '08... and I'm sorry to say, dropping the price now, will NOT make that happen.
If MS had made some damn quality consoles, instead use cheap early parts, then this problem would not have come. Heck, you would have seen a price drop NOW!
Dont kid yourself kids.
Pretty Obvious @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:13AM
Who says the 360's sales arent good so far? Did you miss E3? At this point the Ps3 isnt even a minimal threat. When Sony decides to drop the PS3 to $299 lets talk, but by the time that happens the 360 will prob be $150.
And billions hanging over their heads? Are you kidding me, this is Microsoft were talking bout here. They could buy Sony if they were for sale.
Even with the red ring problem the 360 is still a better quality system. Better looking, better games, cross-platform games are better, Xbox Live. Yeah I sound like fanboy but i dont give a shit. You gotta be deaf, dumb and blind to think Sony is gonna come back after the onslaught of holiday releases the 360 has coming. and dont be suprised if you see a price drop right before Thanksgiving.
BTW lets see what happens Sept after Halo drops. Should be interesting........
cooper @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:58AM
Can the xbox fanboys please fuck off back too 360fanboy.
I voted 08' not b/c 07 wont be great - I just think 08 will be even better :) Can't wait.
Sony FTW.
Tryst @ Jul 23rd 2007 3:55AM
@15 - this is typical fanboy blindness.
MS is a company, it just doens't throw money at anything. $1.9 billion lose is HUGE, and that is only going to get worse. MS probably set aside a budget for its games division, and this has more than likely been blown out of the water, so don't expect anymore buying of exclusives for M$. I'd honestly say that in 2008, you're pretty screwed.
M$ pactices have always been 'to market first' as it is with OS systems, and this time it has back-fired and hit them in the foot. I mean, honestly, would you really buy a console that breaks down on you 40% of the time? XBots, pretty please, with sugar on top, wipe the sh!t from your eyes.
steve @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:59AM
"Where the "PS3 will suck just as much in 08 as it did in 07" option. Im confused"
I am curious about this statement. Exactly why does the ps3 suck??? Let's add up the qualities of a ps3.
1: built in high end blue ray player (which blue ray is clearly wining the hd war) 2: HDMI output with 1080P support. 3: Dolby 7.1 surround sound 4: a large hard drive to hold plenty of downloads 5: WI-FI 6: less than 1% failure rate of the system 6: A huge list of triple A games coming out this fall and next spring. 7: full backwards compatibilty with ps2 games All for the price of $500.00 dollars!!! So I have to ask, why does the ps3 suck???
steve @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:59AM
"Even with the red ring problem the 360 is still a better quality system. Better looking"
Better looking??? The 360 is the ugliest fucking system that has ever been made. I know I had one for A year and then of course it took a shit!!!
insane257 @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:12AM
ok, time for insane257 to sort this out. It's like this.
Sony's console is more expensive than the Wii. So Wii sells more. But Wii doesn't have a good lineup of games, and Wii gamers are just realizing this and are thinking: ''crap..''
The 360 has serious problems, what with 1 in 3 failing. (i witnessed my friends break in front of me just this weekend gone), he said he was going to get a PS3 now because he's on his 3RD 360 and they've all broken in less than 2 months. Not good. Even after a price cut, The 360's sales have dropped. Not good. Oh, and Microsoft are losing $1.9 billion on the warranty for the 360's that failed.
Now we look at the PS3, which looks and feels the most expensive out of the 3, and come on, lets face it, it does feel more expensive. Maybe it's the blu-ray player sitting neatly inside, or the fact we paid £425 , but still..
The PS3's lineup of gamers are like this: Gran Tourismo 5, Grand Theft Auto 4, Wipeout HD, Unreal Tornament 3, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII versus, Little Big World, Resident Evil 5, Monster Hunter 3... There are many more but i think you get the idea.
The PS3 is set to release a tidal wave of huge named games, which will propell the PS3 into the limelight. The PS3 is under-rated because there are so many Xbox-fanboys and Wii-fanboys giving it bad publicity. I don't think that Wii owners can talk bad on PS3 because Nintendo's Mario, the 20 year old franchise is beginning to wear thin and my mate was saying the only game he's got to look forward to on the Wii is 'Wii Cooking' (or something similar) and Mario Galaxy. Hardly anything better than PS3's lineup.
And The 360. Halo 3 and Mass Effect. Compare these to the list i compiled above and the faults with the 360, the failure rate etc, then tell me, why do you continue to be such fanboys of the 360.
I play all 3 consoles regularly, so i don't think i'm biased, but dissing the PS3 is a stupid thing to do, especially when the Wii seems to be losing steam with no good games planned and the 360's sales drooping like a wilted flower starved of sunlight. Not to mention the PS3 has just managed to sell over 1 million in Japan and the PS3 is currently outselling the Wii and 360 in Australia.
I think i've proved my point now.
P.S
If you offer me a job at ps3fanboy.com, i probably would take it...
Tryst @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:57AM
Have any of you read the overall E3 roundup that some Xbot had put together over on the IGN website. That one report alone has made me stop going to that website.
insane257 @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:20PM
Tryst,
IGN and Gamespot are incredibly biased towards the Xbox 360. Every review i read they put down the PS3 in some way, whether it's subtle, or it's alot.
I don't go to them anymore. Until the reviewers are changed, i wont go back.
insane257 @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:33PM
Mortensen. The games you listed (in my opinion) aren't as good as the PS3 ones, which is why you have an Xbox 360 and i have a PS3.
Lets just wait and see which console wins the console war, but let me tell you now, it wont be the 360.
Tryst @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:45PM
@21 - To be truthful, I dont class the 360 as next generation. It is a slight upgrade of the last generation. Its like a 2.5, if you know what I mean.
MS will be laughing all the way to the bank when they release their new console in a round 2-3 years, which is what they do - first to market. Quality comes last. Just bare this is mind when your 360 gets a RRoD when playing one of the 100's of FTP's.
Remind, at the same stage when the 360 came out, exactly what good games did you have? Perfect Dark? Pllleeeeaaaassseeee.
CJ @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:00PM
@Tryst -
360 is Xbox 2.5???? What does that make the PS3? So far multi-platform games have looked even or better on the 360. That comment alone makes your post useless and ignorant.
Insane257 had part of his post correct. There seem to be certain fans for certain systems, mainly based on games each system has. You can talk power hardware and software all you want but it comes down to games. Right now, the 360 has a following due to not only being out first but they have some excellent games and even better ones coming out in the fall/winter. The PS3 will finally start to put out some good dames as well and will build on their die hard following. You like Sony for your own reasons. Probably because you like RPGs and certain exclusives Sony has. Others might not be that into those games and will opt for alternative consoles. Each console will continue to do well. I do not doubt Sony will get back into the race, but you must admit at this point right now they are not doing extremely well due to price and lack of games. If rumors are true, and the current low price cut goes away soon, that will hurt them even further. Especially if MS makes a cut on its console. But as I have stated before, good luck to all consoles. The more good competition, the better for all of us. For us to sit here and try and nit pick and slam other consoles just to do so, is dumb.
Jldowning @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:18PM
Wow lots of Xbots, hasn't it already been said by many devs, that the crappy ports were do to lack or optimizing the game for ist PS3 counterpart?
What about Oblivion, or Dirt, which look MUCH better on PS3, or COD4 (PS3 build looks are runs the same), The Darkness, two other games optimized for both systems run the same.
It seems to me that this new wave of Xbot Rage comes after a time when PS3 seems to be getting its act together. Take the anger out on your selves that you wasted your some $700 on a Xbox 360 and not on PS3 owners (Sorry but Xbox doesn't cost its MSRP, XBL adds to the cost)
Jldowning @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:23PM
Also since UT3 is going to be PS3 lead platform, for 2008, you the 360 owners can enjoy the crappy ports by EA and UBISOFT that were not optimized for YOUR system.
faraz m. @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:28PM
this year will probably be detrimental for sony WHY?
because of halo 3. i know that alot of fanboys will attack me saying that it doesn't look that good or that at e3 the showing was "this and that" but keep in mind that outside of our little hardcore gaming worl are masses of everyday consumers who only know that halo 3 is coming out and it will probably surpass its predecessors. the fact of the matter is that sony doesn't really have any games that the average joe really truly knows about and i anticipating so you are left with a shiny box with just a lot of potential and i mean a lot! 2008 will be a big year. and if it is big enough for sony, i'll get a ps3 also.
by the way, i head that the old head of ceo, the crazy guy i forget his name, started a development company to specifically make games for the ps3 and they showed some ridicolous screenshots that surpassed even the e3 06 killzone 2 trailer. anyone know where those are???
rfom @ Jul 24th 2007 2:38AM
"old head of ceo, the crazy guy i forget his name,"
Ken Kutaragi, remember his name because whatever mistakes he did this time, he has sold 200 million consoles (twice as many as everyone else over the period) and shaped the industry over the last 10 years.
And would disagree on Halo 3 - in fact other way round, it has a bunch of fanatic followers who care only for Halo, nobody else is bothered. And though may drive sales, most of the fanatics are the one who bought a 360 last year - who else would, with almost no good titles? And for everyone else, Halo 3 is running straight into COD4, UT3, Haze and 5-6 other great FPS. It may actually harm 360 - the hype for Halo 3 strangled the excellent Crackdown and would overshadow the other titles like Mass Effect - anyone noticed how clustered the 360 titles are, just 2-3 AAA exlcusives in 18 months, a lot of titles in 2nd of half 2007 and again almost nothing in 2008.
