As
hinted at last week firmware version 1.90 has been released in Japan, with
reports that it will arrive in English speaking regions within the next day or so. But what does it do? We're glad you asked. The following is a list of confirmed features that are worming their way around the internet. We'll let you know when the full patch notes become available.
- Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
- Option menu now includes "eject disc"
- Press triangle on the XMB to eject the disc
- XMB backgrounds
- Change the folder classification
- Emoticons
- Change CD output to 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz
- Force 24Hz output for Blu-ray over HDMI
- Change PS3 video settings in-game
- "Bit Mapping" in the "Music Setting"
- Save AVCHD type animations from a Memory Stick
- Change settings like upscaling while playing PS and PS2 games
- Add bookmarks
- Web browser security function in the browser's tool section
- Avatar moves during audio visual chat
Overall, pretty nice indeed. That'll keep us going while we wait for the fabled 2.00 patch. XMB backgrounds and the ability to organise XMB content are things that we've seen requested many times. As for us, we're loving the ability to eject the disc from a distance, saving us precious seconds of seat-time before having to actually walk towards our PS3. Yes, we're that lazy.

* Ability to rearrange games on the XMB
Sweet! I have demos and games all clumped together so this is a good update.
* XMB backgrounds
Hey, let's hope they have a little movement like the current waves background.
* Change the folder classification
Not sure about this one.
* Emoticons
Sounds interesting
* Change PS3 video settings in-game
Useful for Rainbow Six!!
* "Bit Mapping" in the "Music Setting"
This has got me guessing.
* Add bookmarks
We can already do this... ?
The other stuff is not really all that appealing to me.
All in all, sounds like a great update! I wonder what update 2.0 will hold.
Mishi @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:19AM
sounds awesome!
i'm pretty sure we'll get news on XMB access during TGS or Leipzig
qwerter @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:23AM
@2 lol i was thinkin the same thing with the bookmarks, cant wait for XMB during gameplay, multiple chat sessions, custom avatar, wallpaper & RSS channels ...... get 2 work sony!
Willykyu @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:27AM
No, it's previewed in Japan by AV Watch, but not out until tomorrow. It'll obviously be a worldwide release.
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:27AM

humpty @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:29AM
Im happy for this update because its one step closer to 2.0!
LS @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:30AM
agree with #2, changing the resolution in-game will be ideal for that annoying Vegas antialiasing problem
Kwljunky @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:17AM
FLASH PLAYER NEEDS TO BE UPDATED !
Mishi @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:28AM
@Kwljunky
Amen!!!
JC123 @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:57AM
Wow this update is really great.....but hey, what happened to having to play your own music during playing a game?
Drdre74 @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:19AM
Cool. Glad they did the update. I hated having to quit a game to change the display settings and not having a eject button.
nick @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:34AM
sounds good but still missing XMB acess in games and the ability to play your own music while your in games.
MrMaestro @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:32AM
Would it be so hard to add the ability to output HDMI audio and optical audio at the same time? Sometimes I want just the TV sound, and sometimes I want the stereo on...Sheesh.
Dahk @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:53AM
Yeees! All power to the lazies!
I don't have to bother with touching my previous PS3 when ejecting now =) Scratch free forever. Woo!
Tanya @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:00AM
I like this update, some pretty good stuff! Now lets hear the whiners complain about other things they would rather have and how this update is garbage :P
Damned if they do, damned if they don't ^_^
James @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:10AM
* Change the folder classification
I hope this means I can create playlists under MP3 and videos.
OrganicShadow @ Jul 24th 2007 1:03PM
This means that those leaked screens were actually from developer units with custom firmware versions given to them by Sony.....which is nothing new really.
Hopefully by XMB backgrounds they mean custom wallpaper you can apply from a jpg file or something, and not just different backgrounds similar to the current one. I would actually prefer both, but either way it's nice.
I bet they had to figure out a way of the firmware caching your jpg file into the flash storage where the firmware resides. There will be file size limitations im sure...
Toby @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:31AM
@13
Why would you want to listen to the TV and the stereo at the same time?
Because i like to party...
Jas122 @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:12AM
gd update but i want 2 listen to my own songs in motorstorm **Cries**
justin @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:09PM
finally! ive been waiting 2 add my own background since i got my ps3still need in game music tho
gt4freak85 @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:32PM
I like this update. not 2.0 with xmb access but its a good one. I want to be able to organize my music. I have 17.2 gig of music. Also the abiltiy for the ps3 to read subfolders. ie Ozzy/Blackrain/mp3 files. Abiltiy to rearrange movies also. I have ripped almost all of my dvds to mpeg2, then encoded them in 1920x1080p mpeg2. each movie is about 4.2 gb. Its a pain to scroll through 30+ movies and 17.7 gig of music.
BestOfBothWorlds @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:46PM
@21 you need a bigger hard drive i only have 15 gigs of music and i feel like im running out of space. but the in game music and flash player is what i was waiting for but it doesnt matter atleast its a full update. they must be saving all the good stuff for Home. you can already see the xmb bar in home maybe thats how its going to be.
borland502 @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:42PM
@19: i want 2 listen to my own songs in motorstorm
An iPod and a pair of headphones will fix you right up! =-.)
I'm sure they'll mandate it eventually. As a feature, it's low on my lists but a lot of people have demanded it.
GRANTED @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:40PM
i feel you #18
Maybe im supposed to hate the 360 but it has a lot of cool features that sony should straight up copy. When i got the ps3, I was very surprised and disappointed that i cant create playlists and play my own mp3s in-game (i assumed this would just be a staple of next-gen gaming). It would make GT:HD much less boring (drifting is so hard). 2.0 better pimp my ps3 out.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:51PM

What conversion software are you using? I have tried several "free" converters...but I have not been successful in converting any of my DVD's. I convert movies to my PSP all the time using Mpeg2 yet I cannot do the same for the PS3.
Any help or links you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
bran @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:47PM
I have a Japanese PS3 and I don't see this update up yet. What's up?
Scott Krueger @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:45PM
Still Wishing for the Ability to Output Audio to HDMI and Optical Simultaneously.
HDMI for my TV, and Optical for my Stereo.
Come on the PS2 could do it... Why not the PS3.
Please, Please, Please.
Dahk @ Jul 23rd 2007 2:52PM
@ GodisaMyth.
Try the PS3 Video 9 software from Red Kawa. (a tad too lazy to look it up). I like that one cuz it converts to whatever type of quality/encoding you want.
ekbigpimping @ Jul 23rd 2007 3:12PM
read e-mails during gameplay

"Needs to have 720p/1080i upscaling for PS3 games."
Not possible. Nice update Sony. I hope you can have a background but still have the cool silk wave, that thing is psychedelic.
Anyone else impressed with Sony as of late?
I had my doubts at first but Sony have gone from arrogant to awesome and I only see a bright future.
James @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:13PM
i want sony to fix the overscan on my crt hdtv when i use hdmi. also, lossless audio support would be awesome.
gt4freak85 @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:04PM
@GodisaMyth
Yes use use ps3 video 9 at red kawa, ps3video9.com, I made my own setting 1920x1080p, mpeg2, 6mbs, and it looks damn good. very close to what a blu ray movie looks just a bit more pixelation.
@BestOfBothWorlds
I have the 60bg ps3, usb 2.5 wd 60gb and usb 3.5 hd and all three of them are full. I have 3150mb free on my ps3. I really want the seagate 250gb 5400 2.5 but its like $249, fracking exspensive :( update is not out yet, I am in tennesse.
