PSP sales increase 31% over last year
Sony recently released a statement about NPD sales figures. According to their data, PSP is gaining a lot of momentum, selling 31% more systems this month than last year during the same time. For the month of June, PSP sold an impressive 290,108 units at retail in America, now officially making it the biggest selling PlayStation product that Sony currently sells.Compare that figure to PS3, which sold 98,469 units last month. The PS2 got close: it sold an impressive 270,763 systems last month. However, it's clear that PSP is gaining a lot more momentum. With the redesign coming in September, we're bound to see sales increase even further later this year.

There are now over 290 games out for PSP, and 47 of those getting a review score average of 80% or better... the system is finally coming into its own.

With the way psp's library is slowly shaping up, I'm not surprised by the increase. I'm curious about how many were sold last month, because I imagine people are now going to wait to buy the redesign.

well there's 290,108 americans who are gonna be a bit miffed about a redesign announced less than a month after they bought
@Saigon:
actually i imagine sales will be just as good if not better, cos so far the redesign has been kept low key (not one shop in the UK knows about it, even though it's out in a month!!!, and with the start of the summer holidays worldwide...

@jamma: I doubt 290K will be upset. Sony announced the PSP Slim & Lite with the as much or more warning as Nintendo did with the DS Lite. Nintendo updates their handhelds rather frequently with no apparent negative impact on their popularity. Look at all the iterations of the Gameboy over just the past 8 years.

ha, that's what I was thinking too! But they shouldn't be too upset. Granted, the PSP Slim has a few more features than the old model. But the old model has a lot more accessories available for it than the new-- including cases. I was looking at my official softcase, and with the L-shaped plug on the new headphone/remote, I don't think that will fit, because the cord will be going to the right instead of down.
I hope that Sony makes another softcase for the Slim, but there hasn't been any news on that. The way they promote the core pack, I wonder if they even understand that the PSP *needs* a case.
But any increase in sales is good news.

The PSP slim is a yawn for users of the existing system who aren't 'new stuff junkies'. I'd like to get the quicker load times but it isn't worth $200.
This is great news for the PSP! The PS3 though, continues to be outsold by the GBA ...

The video out alone is worth it to me, but faster load times, bettery battery and slimmer are a plus.
