Sony wants to make you cry
In a recent interview with ThreeSpeech, Sony Euro boss David Reeves mentioned that there are at least half a dozen secret titles under development at Sony that will come out by the end of 2008 and are 'absolutely spectacular.'He goes on to explain that one of the main objectives that Phil Harrison has as the head of software development at Sony is to develop games with the emotional depth and complexity that they'll make us cry (and not in the Gundum: Crossfire kind of way).
Many games have tried to brag about their emotional impact, but few have managed to really tug on the ol' heart strings. RPGs like Fallout 2, Final Fantasy VII, and Okami have been able to squeeze emotional responses out of us -- but it's hard to think of a non-RPG that has succeeded at that. Have any non-RPG has been able to make you tear up a bit?

Jeffro @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:10PM
I think ninja gaiden black can make you cry......out of frustration....
Toby @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:10PM
MGS2 when i found out i had to play as Raiden. =D but for real, when EE died i was pretty let down
doug @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:15PM
when your horse "died" in Shadow of the Collosus after saving you
Aaron @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:18PM
"Shadow of the Colossus" was a pretty sad ending, in the Romeo and Juliet kind of way. I was half-expecting it, though, based on what I knew of "ICO."
Not a PS3 game, but I also cried playing "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic" on Vista. I got all the way to the last level, and then the game engine would just crash. The Halo 2 game engine does not mix well with Vista. Anybody have that same problem?
Aaron @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:18PM
@doug
I concur.

The picture is slightly misleading, because i thought an FFVII remake had been announced for a second.
If FFVII doesn't come out on the PS3, i really will be disappointed. I hope to god Square-Enix are remaking FFVII for the PS3. It really, really would be the best thing to happen on a console this generation. It was heartbreaking watching Aries die back in 1997, so imagine if they remade the scene with the graphics of today. There would be gamers in floods of tears. Hell, even i'd reach for the tissues.
I think even the author of this article wants an FFVII remake judging by the carefully selected picture and by the reference to FFVII.
It sounds to me like FFVII may be one of the secret titles. FFVII is the ONLY game i've felt sad at when Aries died, and other gamers have felt sad at that point in the game. No other game has had that effect on myself or many other gamers.
Maybe there is still hope
MUNCHOUND @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:23PM
Metal Gear Solid 3 ending. Hands down almost made me get teary.
mccomber @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:25PM
I agree with doug too, first game I thought of after FFVII and the exact moment as well.
rmemon @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:27PM
yeah, when i read the part where he said there aren't too many non-rpg titles that affect people emotionally i thought of shadow of the collosus too. awesome game.
KyleMistry @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:29PM
Heck, I usually avoid a game if I know it won't bring me some sort of emotional experience. Kingdom Hearts and Okami made me feel inspired, and God of War games usually leave me with an eager feeling. Makes me want to exercise, or run around, or get stronger in some way. Hell, even Metal Gear Solid games leave me feeling excited, and Shadow of the Colossus' and ICO's ending even made me feel a bit sad.
Kingdom Hearts 2 had to be the most moving for me, though. Especially with a soundtrack like the one it had.
Ian @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:29PM
Not the same as crying but evoking a physical response - Pro Evo Soccer's Master League has literally made my thumb bleed!
(I blame no one other than me and my own addiction!)
Andy @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:31PM
Some of these secret games could be some awesome ones like Afrika or The Getaway.
Deathalo @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:35PM
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are 2 non RPGs that made me tear up and feel emotional. That's why I can't wait for the next game in the series for the PS3, Team ICO is amazing.
Stef Geiger @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:40PM
Anybody finish off The Darkness? The end cinematic is more emotionally powerful than most "good" dramas. Anyone else agree?
Michael K. @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:46PM
Everybody is saying it, but I want to as well. Shadow of the Colossus and ICO, both amazing games. I think I got more upset when the horse falls down the cliff in shadow of the colossus than I did at any other videogame moment.
Nuno @ Jul 23rd 2007 6:58PM
shadow of the colossus and ICO of course!
Moe @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:00PM
I think i will cry at the end of MGS4 if Snake has to die....
Andy @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:01PM
You know what makes me cry. Stupid fanboy wars. Just look at the perfectly good post until the Xbox 360 fanpeople showed up. (I think we should use the term fanpeople because not all fans are boys)

shadow of colossus.
the horse thing.
like lots and lots of people.
yeah..
Microdot @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:34PM
cant really think of anything but rpg's. nothing has really 'brought me to tears'... but definitely choked up a bit.
ff7... same as everyone else. you are a heartless bungsniffer if you didnt.
xenosaga 3... took me almost a year to get through the trilogy... and to watch it unfold with one of the constant characters that had been there right from the start and their sacrifice at the end ...... it was kind of a 'frog in the throat' moment.
ffx.... boy falls for girl, girl falls for boy... girl finds out boy is a figment of someone elses imagination as he fades away. pretty moving. and this was sufficiently ruined by the pile of crap known as ffx-2.
madden 07... what? the texans REALLY fucking suck. it would make you cry to if you had to root for them.
Jake @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:44PM
Shadow of the Colossus I think may be the only game where I became emotionally involved enough to nearly cry. That's impressive for a game with almost zero dialog.
Consolcwby @ Jul 23rd 2007 7:46PM
@Andy: You are.... correct! Give this man a prize!!!
@Everyone: Has another game in another genre besides RPGs ever made me cry? Uhm... yes. Just one. The Original Quake. But that's because of a personal reason I will not get into here. =S
Andy @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:30PM
Actually I almost cried the other day when I was playing MLB 07. I was the Twins(just because I'm Canadian doesn't mean I have to root for the Jays...anyways) and I was playing against the Red Sox. It was the 13th inning tied a 5-5. I had Neshek out on the mound and David Ortiz hit a walkoff homerun on a hung slider.
Games are supposed to make you happy, if I want to cry I'd watch the news.
John @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:42PM
I was definately emotionally affected by Shadow of the Collosus-- I never even killed the first monster, I would just get in and ride or walk around. It was so eerie, so massive, so well-done.
I also found myself engaged emotionally in Resistance, because the story is written so well. There were a number of scenes and even parts in the game that had a strong emotional resonance, and I was very impressed with the manner in which the story was told, and all the details that they filled in so carefully. Also, that chick sounds hot, but not in a cheesy way, rather, an intelligent way.
There are parts of Final Fantasy X-2 that I absolutely loved. Not so much those singing things, those were weird; but the way the girls talked, the looks on their faces, the fact that each one had this past, and acted like it. The music, some of the fantastic settings, and even those strange blue creatures, the musical way they talk-- there are parts of this game that still come back to me as if a smidgen of my own life being remembered.
BestOfBothWorld @ Jul 23rd 2007 8:47PM
kingdom hearts 1&2 songs alone bring a tear to your eye(this is coming from a 18 yr old 6'0ft 220lb. blk male who plays football and still manages to put 200hrs into FFX to complete ever1 sphere grid and ultmate weapon yes i dodged 200 bolts! also got anima and the MAGUS sisters) and knowing that the game will end will not dawn on you until you finish watching the secret ending. as for FFVII we all know Clouds mind was on Aeris but his eyes were on Tifa B**BS.
Se7enwolf @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:42PM
yeah the Darkness was good, but Metal Gear Solid 3 beats all games even rpg when it comes to emotions
adam @ Jul 23rd 2007 9:49PM
Metal gear solid 3
god dammit, what a game
paskowitz @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:02PM
No game has made me cry out of sadness but the end of MGS3 at the grave yard was pretty emotional.
mccomber @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:06PM
I'd forgotten about the Darkness, although I didn't think the ending had as much impact as the scene leading up to his first death... I was literally on the edge of my seat watching that unfold, completely frustrated by the lack of control. It was great that they put it together so that you were still in the game but basically watching a cut-scene unfold in front of you with nothing to do but cringe.
DannyV_El_Acme @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:39PM
I completely broke down crying at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. That ending was absolutely heartbreaking. Not only was that game the one that really tore me up, the Metal gear Solid series as a whole is the one I've had most emotional investment in. I was absolutely shocked the first time I saw the MGS4 teaser and saw Snake all old and sick.
Deadman875 @ Jul 23rd 2007 11:45PM
@ 18 and 34
I seriously choked up at both parts. In fact pretty much from the middle on through I was in a very somber mood. Them gangsters didn't know what they had coming.
Laurens Holst @ Jul 24th 2007 4:26AM
DON’T SPOIL THE ENDING OF SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS!!
