Metal Gear Online beta announced; Screenshots released

At the Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary party in Japan today, Kojima made an announcement regarding the upcoming "companion" to Metal Gear Solid 4: Metal Gear Online. This 16-player online stealth battlefield simulator will feature characters, stages and the same control scheme as Metal Gear Solid 4. While a release date is currently nowhere to be seen, there will be a 3000 person beta test later this year. Those who want to sign up have between now and August 6th to do so, though sadly it seems to be for Japanese residents only.

Nine screenshots of the game have also been placed on the official Kojima Productions website. Simply click through to the 20th Anniversary party section of the site to see them.

SO is this going to be part of MGS4 or a stand-alone online game?

From what the site shows, it seems to be a stand-alone game.

Y'all morons.

Its a frickin 2" picture. You can't tell anything from it and its too early to do so anyway.

Japan only is for the beta. International betas could prove to be difficult to handle.

I didn't realize people in Japan actually like this series. I always figured it to be directed to the western countries.

I guess out of a million PS3 owners finding 3000 that want to try a game shouldn't be too difficult

Wow - moronic Xbots out in force today, it's starting to sound like the playground of a nursery school... Oh, and Andy - not only are the Metal Gears HUGE in Japan (starting on the NES in '87) but is considered to be a system seller there. So, be prepared for an avalanche of sales there right around the time this game is released.

Wow... it's like no one ever heard of Metal Gear Online before. =S Hope this one is better than the last online one! S=
