PlayStation 3 jumps up to 6 million worldwide sales?

The Experience More event was a huge promotion for the PS3, Blu-ray, and whatever else Sony felt like talking about (like those hot OLED screens). Blu-ray, they said, contributed to about 80% of all high-def content sales, excluding PS3 games. Australia itself, it was estimated, had about 64,000 PS3 units sold in it to date, which is pretty good considering the price (the chart listed above was claimed to be a little dated). So, is it 4.5 or 6 million units sold worldwide (CNN estimated about 5 million as a correction)? Different market estimates, we suppose, but that's a pretty big gap. Thoughts?

It would not surprise me. With the announcement that the price cut was only to clear stock these could be real numbers.
Probably just an estimate.
I cannot believe Australia has more PS1's than PS2's.

118,000,000 PS2s sold worldwide is about 43,600/day since launching in March 2000.

My guess is 6 million shipped, 4.5 million sold. Or, maybe the 4.5 million was before the price cut and the 6 million is the current number.

6 million would be very good news indeed and would indicate that PS3 is closing the gap with the 360.

The answer is simple. The 4.5 million you reported the other day was from Sony's fiscal report, and so is 'old' information reported in their accounts.
The 6 million is current units and will appear in a future fiscal report.
It's that easy...

I could believe it, the Best Buy I work at has been consistently sold out of PS3's since the price was dropped, I was lucky enough to pull one aside to buy it.

Who cares what the exact number is... Ps3's are selling like hot-cakes since the price drop and thats all that matters, keep closing that gap. 360fanboys get your weeping towels ready so when its time to cry you'll be prepared...

Unfortunitly only around 3.9 Million PS3's have been sold. However around 4.5+ have been shipped to stores.

I don't know where sony is pulling this number from. These numbers are from March, so, no the price drop is not even taken into account. Also, these numbers are older then sony's fiscal report. Take the highest number they can find, I guess. Regardless, it will be at 6 million soon enough, just not yet. Sony, just be patient.

perhaps there was an online bug that cropped up after the game was shipped to stores, so they closed the servers until they can fix it?
in either case, it's no big deal, as there is a time frame for the fix (August), so they don't have to wait too long, though it is an inconvenience, i suppose.
i'm sure the Japanese are too busy loving their Hot Shots to care about online too much.

4.18 million is using Sony's new "shipped" accounting method. The 6 million uses Sony's old method.
Sony used to count PS3's leaving the production lines as shipped, however, they have now switched over to only counting those shipped to actual retailers and not languishing in Sony warehouses. This new policy is in-line with Nintendo's and Microsoft's policies. This was stated in the report, if anyone had actually bothered to read it.

6 million = Shipped
4.8 million = sold to end users
Microsoft's 11 million uses the former counting method, and includes replacements for failed units.

I had heard about the players but NOT the discs! If this is true (with Target only carrying BD and not HD-DVD) then the format war could be considered over at the consumer level. The only thing next would be for BD to supplant SD DVDs. Which given enough time, I believe will happen. (More HDTVs sold = less SD media wanted/more HD media wanted) - And before anyone talks about Direct Download or VOD, some people do NOT actually have broadband access yet, to speak nothing of the BD quality on picture and sound - we won't be seeing direct streaming on this level for quite some time yet... So, yay for Blu-Ray! =D
