New id FPS needs two discs on 360, one Blu-ray on PS3
idTech is real ... and it will finally arrive in a brand new game, Rage. Simultaneously developed for PC, Mac, PS3, and 360, Rage will use the second generation of id's "Megatexture" technology. What does that mean? 20GB worth of texture information will be squeezed through the engine's technology to deliver visually stunning scenes. Regardless of the compression, the game will require two DVDs for all platforms ... but the PS3.
The need for added space in the HD-era of games is clear. Blu-ray's added storage allows the game to run on a single disc. The game itself is a departure for id, where it will try to combine "60 percent shooting and 40 percent driving." After a comet smashes into the Earth, players will have to fight the monsters that roam the wasteland.
id plans to make Rage a 20 hour single player experience, and plans to offer co-op. Also, in a surprising change of pace, their aiming for a suspiciously safe Teen rating. The game will ship "when it's done."

MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 3rd 2007 8:56PM
Aw come on stop this crap now PS3 owners are going to looks as arrogant as 360 owners. I dont know about this game and how big its supposed to but if GTAIV aint gonna release on 2 discs this aint gonna do it. unless this game comes late 08 and pushes both consoles. NEXT TITLE: ID TAKES BACK WHAT THE SAID DVD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH!
marcandrer @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:04PM
just confirms the point of the GTA4 delay.. they are having a hard time making it fit on a freaking small dvd.
naruto007 @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:05PM
just because gtaIV will fit on a dvd doesnt means all the games will besides this looks like it will be a high top quality game with stuning graphics wish gtaIV dont have.
yes gtaiv looks awesome compared with other gta games but with unreal, gears,mgs4,killzone graphics are a joke.

And everyone was saying that the inclusion of the blu-ray drive was overkill for this generation, and that sony was just trying to push its new format on the masses. Looks like sony knew it would be needed after all. I think a year or two down the line this will be common place, multi disc games for 360, single disc for ps3. Just look at Lair using 25 gigs of the Blu-ray, if ever ported to the 360 (which it wont be) that would be 5 dvds....insane.
Dave @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:11PM
Of course Sony was trying to push the Blu-ray format onto consumers. It was a great business decision. If the only thing they cared about was a high-capacity disc, they would've made a proprietary disc format for the PS3.
Since that idea is patently absurd, they killed two birds with one stone and not only gave developers more space, but also put a Blu-ray player into every home that owned a PS3.
And I have never complained once.
Daryl @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:43PM
I doubt this is true. We'll see when it's released.
Strike Man @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:53PM
A videogame will require more than one disc to play?
OH, THE HUGE MANATEE!!!
Seriously, in a linear game (especially RPGs), the whole issue of multiple discs don't bother me all that much. I would think that anyone who complains about having to switch a disc 15 hours into a 35 hour game probably has bigger issues to deal with.
The only games where it probably presents a real possible issue with game design are the sandbox type ones, and GTA4 will no doubt be the first true test for the DVD format in that respect.
deleted @ Aug 3rd 2007 9:55PM
Sucks for us 360 owners. We'd probably get a watered down verse. When I get my PS3 (hopefully soon) I'll look out for it.
Jason Tyra @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:00PM
I don't doubt this is true. The article says 20GB worth of textures. I'll bet id knows what they're talking about.
GL @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:05PM
It begins...
Play B3YOND!
Jason Tyra @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:05PM
One other thing, judging by a some of the comments it seems there are a lot of anti-PS3 people here. If you don't like Sony or the PS3, why bother coming to this site at all? I've decided that a lot of the animosity towards the PS3 comes from the simple fact of not being able to afford one.
ForceUnleashed @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:12PM
Its going to use 2 discs so that ALL the content that the game is supposed to have will be there for 360 users.
So 360 users won't miss out on anything.
And really this is no big deal. Its just 1 game. Call me when MS has 10 games that require 5 or more discs.
Until then this is just more BluRay propaganda.
And I know this is ps3fanboy. I'm just writing this for the 360 owners who actually think that having 2 discs will make our version "watered down"
GL @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:18PM
EITHER GET ON BOARD THE PS3 WAGGON OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!!! YOU CAN'T STOP PROGRESS!
PS3: “I'll run you over. I will. I'm not joking...don't tempt me....”
RoboJoel @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:20PM
Really... who cares? It's an id Game. It's the type of game I'd buy for 360 (Live... Controls), and it is sure to be of high-quality, if not the highest quality. That more than justifies me switching discs half-way through the game.

It is nice that the PS3 version will fit on a single BluRay, it warrants the format's existence in the PlayStation 3 (or the idea behind the format; Mass-Removable-Storage). But still, that's no reason to incite fanboyism with such a blatantly arrogant Headline.
Game looks great. Xbox 360 is great. PlayStation 3 is great. BluRay is warranted. DVD is still beyond adequate.
miglaugh @ Aug 4th 2007 12:01AM
Teen? psssshhhh. NEXT!!
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 4th 2007 12:13AM
360 players are so arrogant they dont even car about the 30% failure rate is probably bigger now. so how much do you want to bet 360 owners wont care. im just saying 360 games arent that ground breaking to pay for repairs that are not covered for the warrenty. MS doesnt just give you new consoles they give you back the shitty you had before thats bound to break again because they just added the same parts they will die later in turn making you pay. God bless you if you get RROD becasue if you dont your screwed.
John @ Aug 4th 2007 12:44AM
This sounds awesome, a perfect balance. Can't wait for this one.
HektikLyfe @ Aug 4th 2007 3:36AM
All this new technology, all these new textures, and id still insists on using only red and brown tones. What the hell? Blue and Green id, Blue and Green.
PatMan @ Aug 4th 2007 4:34AM
Who really cares how many discs it is? Didn't Final Fantasy VII come on 7 discs for the PC?
Sheesh. It's like people who spend half an hour looking for the remote instead of walking to the TV to turn it off.
insane257 @ Aug 4th 2007 6:59AM
PatMan,
FFVII came out in 1995 when you didn't have DVD or Blu Ray disks in a console. I think that comment was not relevant. FFVII was quite possibly the best game ever made to date. If they re-released FFVII, they could fit it on a DVD or Blu Ray disk depending on how much the FMV sequences took up.
BlackFox5 @ Aug 4th 2007 11:58AM
Yes. Oh, and it didn't took 7 Disc. You must be on drugs or haven't even played FF VII before. It uses ONLY 3 disc on PlayStation and 4 Disc on PC. Think before you post.
dragoman @ Aug 5th 2007 5:57PM
FFVIII used 5 discs I think.....not sure about 9, and X was on PS2 (DVD) so only one since then....

@ Josh
Are you truly that stupid, or just a sony propoganda whore.
Of course Sony put Blu Ray in the PS3 to push their format, you dumbass. I swear to gawd the fanboys iq around here average single digits.
ryano @ Aug 4th 2007 12:42PM
ah, i knew that bluray was good for something. that extra 50 seconds of reloading another disc is sooo last gen!
MisterL @ Aug 4th 2007 8:55PM
Swapping discs isn't so bad, if you had a PS1 and played JRPGs, it was the norm. Even a select few PS2 JRPGs are 2 discs. Blue Ray is a good thing though, more space means developers can be lazy (in regards to making everything fit) and focus on more important things; it gives them one less thing to worry about. However, because of broadband internet, you'll see games moving more and more toward digital distribution in the future.
Tbone4690 @ Aug 4th 2007 9:01PM
Why do the ps3 fanboys always like to put down the 360 in every manner. Microsoft gave everyone a three year warranty, you think Sony would do that? Hell no. They wouldn't do it with the ps2 when it had problems. If Sony doesn't pull one out this winter and don't get profit out of the ps3 I'd say they will pull the plug on it. Microsoft has soo many games that are ground breaking, Gears was one, it's coming to the pc yeah, but it started on the 360 and the 360 is what made it a success. Bioshock is anoter groundbreaking titles, it is brining back what single player shooters should be, Halo was a groundbreaking title which launched thousands of wannabe titles even Killzone is a wannabe. Bioshock is amazing. Halo will have amazing sales. GTA has the exclusive content because Microsoft paid for it to be made. They funded the development of it. That is why the ps3 doesn't have it, not because Microsoft paid off Rockstar. Sony isn't one that likes to lose money, and it's hurting them this gen because Microsoft isn't afraid to lose money. They want to gain loyalty and history as having a console that is easy to be developed for. Just wait till the next gen which will probably be in 2 to 3 years and everyone will be using either blu-ray or hd-dvd for games or something of their own. Doesn't what is happening kinda remind you of what Sony did to Nintendo when the PS1 came out?
GL @ Aug 4th 2007 9:32PM
WebMaster,
Let me explain something to you. Josh was saying that everyone was complaining (mostly xbots) that Sony was pushing the blu-ray format ONLY for movies. Not games.
Josh was saying that blu-ray benefits go further than just a movie format. Hence the article.
Understand?
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 5th 2007 12:34AM
i dought it for my own reasons everytime something like this comes out we are always being corrected.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 5th 2007 1:09AM
hahahaha reasons why they do it because the PS3 is better in every hardware aspect. Maybe they dont have the software and content today but it will be here soon. Why didn sony give a 3 year warrenty on the ps2 because they had a recall and fixed the problem instead of sending it back out. the console was supposed to have a 5 year limit sadly my ps2 died 3 years later then i bought a new skinny one 6 months b4 the PS3 came out thinking i wouldnt get one on release but i did :) and happy to say it works with no problems i feel bad for the people in the 2% failure rate. PS3 has no games! from what i've seen the first year 360 wasnt exactly flying off the shelves with its lack of killer apps and NO HALO3 any time soon around launch. wait so your telling me you waited nearly 1 year for GoW and 2 years for HALO3 after the 360 release thats way better than PS3(you have to be kidding). so there you go 360 has games but wtf you forgot about the rest thats why people always talk about but the PS3 has been through worse! after lawsuit after lawsuit then complaints about no apps, its too expensive even though the price is completely reasonable, the PSN store sucks, online sucks, every game even though poorly ported sucks on the PS3, the RSX is inferior to the 360 gpu, cell sucks, no 3rd party exclusives, sony sucks, home is lame, who wants to play KZ2, MGS4 sucks anyway, 360 is getting PS3 exclusives, who wants to pay for a system that cost more but the same graphics, less ram for textures, blu ray is really gay ray, you dont need 50 gigs oblivion fits on a dvd with good compression so why do you need more space(LOL), PS3 controller is the same it sucks, no rumble, converting videos is a bitch,NO BODY IS BUYING IT(LOL again) come on the 360 fanboy list goes on.
After this year this whole list will be proven wrong and the PS3 will be impossible to hate.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 5th 2007 1:10AM
@26 sorry dude

Grow up Xbox fan boys, how old are we 5
Tbone4690 @ Aug 5th 2007 1:00PM
They never did a recall, this has been explained before, in some other post not going through that again. There were many games, Call of Duty was great, Kameo was a graphically great game, you have to play it in hd to enjoy it. Oblivion was great, graw was good, the outfit was good. there many I could list, most of the titles in the first year were great.
BigDaddyDavee @ Aug 5th 2007 1:13PM
Forget the multiple disks for one second......is anyone actually interested in the game? It had nothing special.
The driving looked like an under populated Motorstorm and the shooting scenes were nothing special.
Personally, it could be on one, or a hundred and one disks, whatever.....the gameplay wasn't anything to write home about. Hence why everyone is on about the media!
Radicoon @ Aug 5th 2007 8:45PM
Looks like another Quake 4 to me.
