Let your PS3 drive you to work!

For those not in the know, there's this thing held every so often called the DARPA challenge where people modify cars to drive themselves across the land, instead of having people doing the, er, footwork. Anyway, San Diego based group Axion Racing was tired from making the cars drive themselves -- it was too easy, they said. So they decided to take a PS3 running Linux, slap it into the car, and have it process a series of camera information to assist in keeping the car on the road.

Yet another insane use for the PS3 and the Cell processor, if you ask us. This must be the only console to have such limitless applications, but this one borders on ridiculous. We're not saying it's a bad idea or it's sort of silly, but it has that "if we can do it, let's" vibe. It's an unnecessary way to do things, but Axion Racing is going to prove that the PS3 can, in fact, drive you to work if you let it.

Cogratulations Sony. You duped the masses into thinking that the PS3 is "more than a videogame console".

I'm with PS3fb on this one. It borders on Rube Goldburg Machine if you ask me.

No Kidding. wow. Dejevu, first Saddam was using the "power of the PS2" to run his air defence network, and 3rd world countries were going to use it to create nuclear weapons due to that cutting edge processing power, of the PS2. And now this for the PS3.

Wow i want to get my hand on the linux they have! fuck the car i want a high powered computer/console and wait for somebody to get a patch so i can ru n crysis on the linux OS. the linux they have now doesnt allow you to use both the gpu and cpu and its yet to really get a hold of the cells power because of sonys block in the software. Lol. It's not an insane or silly idea. It's an insane or silly idea using the cell processor to play games :p which currently doesn't even touch the capabilities of that processor - for the following reason - programming time and expertise ( = money). For the price of the ps3 and the type of processor it has - if someone can actually use it - i would say that's great.
