Unreal Tournament 3 to feature PC to PS3 cross play? Still undecided
The rumour mill is working overtime today, churning out bags and bags of delicious untruthes. The latest of which is that Unreal Tournament 3 will feature PC to PS3 cross play and that the PS3 will be the only console to support the feature. We contacted Mark Rein for clarification and he responded exactly as we expected him to. "We have not made a decision on PS3 vs. PC play."
To clarify further, for those confused, the PS3 version of UT3 will feature keyboard and mouse but PC to PS3 cross play has not been decided on yet. Rein listed some hurdles that need to be jumped before the feature could be implemented during his interview with Joystiq. One of those hurdles? Control differences. So with that fixed, it's a possibility. They just haven't decided yet. Yes, we're really driving that point home.
Keep those rumours coming and we'll keep debunking them. Probably.

I hope they set it up so that it is apparent you are in a cross play room. For those that don't want to bother with a mouse and keyboard in front of their tv sitting on their couch, they would be at a huge disadvantage playing PC people.

I agree...Cross Play is a no question watch.

I am already not buying it because they allow keyboard and mouse support. Cross-platform play would official make this a worthless purchase.
The only way I would buy this is if they make it so if you have a mouse and keyboard you can only play against people with mouse and keyboard. No matter if they are playing on PC or PS3.

@andy or anyone else bitching about this.. isn't it likely that they'll slap on a row where it shows what the player is using like ps3/pc and keyboard/controller.. maybe make them fun fucking icons.. it's kind of obvious, isn't it?

Exactly, so many people are bitching about this feature, Mark Rein would have to be an idiot if he didn't separate the two, obviously you won't be playing anyone with the KB/M combo if you only have a controller, or you'll at least be warned and have the opportunity to back out, I think this is a great feature, and besides there will probably be seperate servers for the different peripherals, and if cross platform play was introduced then PC players would only be able to play with PS3 owners with the KB/M combo.

=o i'm confused... who DOESN'T want to play a shooter with a keyboard/mouse configuration??... it's the best way to play a shooter! o=

Why is everybody complaining about playing with kb/m users? Who cares! Playing with PC users just means more people to play with, if you don't like playing with pc users then don't play the game. Epic shouldn't neuter the game just because people are afraid of getting owned by PC users. I can't wait to play this game on my PS3, and hopefully they will add cross-platform play regardless of what whiny noobs say. I mean no disrespect to anybody just so you know.

I don't think it'll be a problem as long as Epic programs some way to tell whether or not the server is a "all system" server. More important is the inclusion of the ability to host PS3 servers on dedicated PC servers (which was confirmed by Mark Rein if I remember correctly). Hopefully, by using dedicated uber-powerful servers, 40+ player matches are possible on the PS3, which has never been a problem on PC multiplayer games.
