To start with, we'd
never recommend doing any of these to your PS3. We wouldn't do it to ours, even if these tests are, in fact, true. With that disclaimer, let's talk about the "108 hour" tests a set of PS3's went through to see how much the system could handle before failing. How much could they handle? Apparently, everything. PS3's were played for 108 hours straight, switching between games and Blu-ray movies. If you want a more detailed list of the test's parameters,
they're here. Three scenarios all came with the same result: the PS3 freakin' rocks.
- In a standard living room, the PS3 was perfectly fine except for a strange noise coming from the disc tray after 12 hours. Nothing surprising there!
- The PS3 was put in the back of a freezer van for the second test, where the temperature gradually went from 50 degrees to 0 degrees (Fahrenheit). When the temperature reached zero, the PS3 started to become sluggish and eventually, the screen blacked out. However, this was due to a power cord getting a bit too moist -- the PS3 still worked fine.
- Placing the PS3 in a hot sauna seems like a terrible idea -- where the temperature went from 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit over time. After 64 hours, there was a slight burning smell and after 108 hours, the console was extremely hot (no, really?) but the console still worked fine after 108 hours.
Amazing stuff, really. Again, we would never try to play our PS3 for 108 hours straight in our living room, let alone a freezer or hot sauna. Nor would we recommend you doing so! We'll take this test and their results with a grain of salt, but we have to admit -- our PS3's haven't had any trouble despite how long we've played them. So either the PS3 is indestructible, or it has
every disease known to man. Anyone on their second PS3?

Well, mine has been on for about 2 months straight with no issues whatsoever... so I can believe this.
Andy @ Aug 13th 2007 3:11PM
They forgot to test some areas that I enjoy playing my PS3
Underwater in a bathtub full of lava
On top of Mount Everest
Inside a giraffes stomach
If you are going to test a machine you might as well do it in places where people will actually play them.
Although it will be inevitable lets try and not make remarks at the Xbox 360 heating problems.
Prashanth @ Aug 13th 2007 3:12PM
This is incredible. Really on the other end of the spectrum from the 360, which breaks down at the slightest hiccup.
Nav @ Aug 13th 2007 3:25PM
To me it seems that the PS3 has been one of the most successful CE launches in history in terms of reliability. If I were Sony, I'd really start hammering home their reliability now, while MS is still recovering from the red rings of death fiasco.
money_mike_preme @ Aug 13th 2007 3:30PM
they shoudv'e done the tests side by side with a 360...then the which system is truly better debacle would finally be over. i guess its not needed with xbox'es RRoD already well documented
Zak360 @ Aug 13th 2007 3:29PM
I'd like to see a 360 do these same tests, and count the RRoD!!!
Seriously that would be the ulimate comparison.
I've never had my PS3 flinch at anything, my 360 on the other hand, died 3 times, before I got rid of it.
Ghaleon @ Aug 13th 2007 3:36PM
Sony's 1 for 3 on console reliability, yay.
Seriously, it is really great they finally got their shit together on manufacturing.
Neptune @ Aug 13th 2007 3:38PM
100 to 120 fahrenheit. You call that a -hot- sauna? :)
never$$hort @ Aug 13th 2007 3:43PM
Well thats definately a good thing to know that our PS3's wont be going anywhere no matter what conditions we play them under (something the main competition(M$)cant say about themselves)... Now that we know PS3s are quality-built, bring us the games(they're coming) Sony and shut this competition out for a 2nd time... I dont care what you guys say, no game(Halo 3)is worth playing if you have to deal with constant hardware failures...
Read this and dont be fooled by the title 360 fans... this article pisses in your faces. It is cleverly calling you damn stupid... read it twice. People whose 360 broke down 3 times or more should get a free copy of Halo3...

"In a standard living room, the PS3 was perfectly fine except for a strange noise coming from the disc tray after 12 hours. Nothing surprising there!"
My 360 drive never makes sounds when played for 12 hours straight. :/

@10:
Killer: "My 360 drive never makes sounds when played for 12 hours straight. :/ but the fan is louder than a trainwreck before it overheats then produces a scratched disc when I eject my game... Wow what a trade-off, I love my 360!!!"
Me: LMAO!!!
mamardilla69 @ Aug 13th 2007 4:02PM
@10
"My 360 drive never makes sounds when played for 12 hours straight"
thats because it should already be dead by the 4th hours "Corpses doesnt make sounds" =)
Draco @ Aug 13th 2007 3:59PM
I'm confused by the same thing as Killer, what is the "strange noise" that you speak of I've never head one? the PS3 doesnt even have a tray, its slot loaded.
granted I havent had a 12 hour playing I don't think yet with my PS3, pretty close maybe 9 hours, but never the long.
snsr @ Aug 13th 2007 4:00PM
Great job, Sony. Money well spent.
NOW HOW ABOUT SOME F^&*'IN GAMES?
Consolcwby @ Aug 13th 2007 4:13PM
=o here comes the bots...
Killer @ Aug 13th 2007 4:16PM
Zomg, I so attacked the ps3!!!!1111
You can stop protecting your balls! (Never$$hort and marmardilla) I'm just wanting to know why after 12 hours of use the drive makes a sound and that isn't strange?
It's funny I wasn't even making fun of the ps3. What a bunch of douschbags. I guess you two just need help. I can't ask a simple obivious question? Draco knew it was a question I guess you two are alittle slow. I'll try to make it easier for you.
Also, both of your comments, well lets just say are one: old jokes and 2: were so predictable that I won 15 bucks from a freind. Thanks for being predictable dumbasses.
Neil @ Aug 13th 2007 4:19PM
These tests are kinda cool, point at the end of the day very pointless without doing a side by side with the 360 and Wii.
I know most people, including 360 owners would assume the 360 would burn up in the sauna test, but still one should never sauna anything....its always best to know for sure.
mamardilla69 @ Aug 13th 2007 4:28PM
i usually sauna stuff i also hose my ps3 to keep it clean lol
never$$hort @ Aug 13th 2007 4:32PM
Try wording your questions differently than dumb-ass, instead of the PS3 does this compared to the 360 format, talk about old and predictable. By the way that wasn't a question, you put down a quote from the article and then followed that by your retarded comment... I think you are the slow one and enjoy your $15 retard, put it towards your 360 replacement fund...
Scott Krueger @ Aug 13th 2007 4:33PM
Killer is Lying his Fool Head Off.
The 360 is Loud, Very Loud.
From the 1st Minute to the 12th Hour.
That is why I do DVDs/BluRay on my PS3, Quiet.
My PS3 is WAY more Silent compared to my 360.
Nate @ Aug 13th 2007 4:34PM
What I think is notable is the lack of comments from people saying their PS3 is broken. How many XBox360s are running with their CPU pegged 24/7? Now how many PS3s are? I know mine is. Thank you, Folding@Home, and thank you Sony for such a fine machine.
I've never had any sound from my PS3 whatsoever. Not a peep. I usually have to look over the edge of the coffee table for the LEDs to even know if the thing is running.
And yes, the PS3 needs more games. But you know what? So does the Wii. I'm borrowing one from a friend, and decided to look on gamespot to see what games I might want to rent.... well, if you throw out all the Nintendo, SNES, and Nintendo 64 games, it actually has about as many as the PS3.
I know the Wii is super popular, but I'd really like to know how many Wii owners own any games other than Wii sports. And how often they use their Wiis after the first 2 months. I bet it's not that many on either account.
And yes, the XBox 360 has way more games. It's also been out for 2 extra years. But you know what? Most of the XBox 360 games are also PlayStation 2 games, and my PS3 plays those just fine. Plus Blu-Ray videos. Plus 50 gigs per game disk. Plus reliability.
DownwardMonkey @ Aug 13th 2007 4:41PM
@Killer.
It said the TRAY made a noise, the drive was fine. It made a noise because it was being used over and over and over again to insert games and BD.
tlarkin79 @ Aug 13th 2007 4:48PM
How incredibly stupid. So it stopped working after it was frozen, because the power cord got "a bit moist" it says. I hate to tell these guys but if your power cord isn't working your system isn't working, I wouldn't call that a success.
And there was a "burning smell" when it got hot but it still worked. I'm sure it's going to last a lot longer too, considering something inside the PS3 was burning up.
Seriously, try that with the other systems for some real comparison, or else this test is completely meaningless.

jitty @ Aug 13th 2007 4:52PM
What is the strange noise coming from the disc tray at 12 hours? I get really paranoid when I start hearing strange noises from my devices. Especially expensive devices. I want to know so I can leave my ps3 on for 12 hours regularly...
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 13th 2007 5:20PM
sony learns from there mistakes anybody remember the PS2 recall.
Mak @ Aug 13th 2007 5:38PM
"sony learns from there mistakes anybody remember the PS2 recall."
There was no PS3 recall. If you mean 500,000 or so dodgy lasers, then that was not recall. The PS2 shipped over 120,000,000 units, a failure rate of 0.3% is pretty darn good.
I only know one person who ever had any problems with PS2, and that was after a year or so of playing in a smokey room.
The PS3 is awesome kit, unbeliably powerful, yet near silent, and totally relaible.
Well done Sony.
SOCOMRAIDER @ Aug 13th 2007 10:18PM
I think it is interesting that Sony got all the heat under check. Yet Microsoft, who even made the huge power brick on the OUTSIDE of the unit, still has thermal issues.
Then again, Sony has been in the hardware business for a very long time... compared to Microsoft.
JKPierce @ Aug 13th 2007 7:00PM
Well, yeah. There's not really any reason for the 360 to undergo said tests as regular use, of all things, makes the console overheat. There's nothing to even remotely downplay in your continued trolling in this article.
The 360 is also a gaming machine, for frothing members of the other 'side.' They enjoy their loud machine, despite scandalous failure rates. You know what? I'm glad. It's awesome they're enjoying themselves.
Dahk @ Aug 13th 2007 7:07PM
"23. How incredibly stupid. So it stopped working after it was frozen, because the power cord got "a bit moist" it says. I hate to tell these guys but if your power cord isn't working your system isn't working, I wouldn't call that a success. "
Nah, the system works fine. Cords are easily replaceable. Standard issue power cords, no bricks no nothing. If it gets moist, use another.
@ killer. Don't listen to this blindedly arrogant pesty kids. Jeez. He barely commented and he gets hounded. Calm down fools.
Dahk @ Aug 13th 2007 7:07PM
and... LOL @ Mr. Burns link! HAHA that was awesome Nick.
Popfrogs @ Aug 13th 2007 8:09PM
They didn't do a side by side comparison with the X360 because it would have been too expensive.
Iggy @ Aug 13th 2007 10:27PM
Looks Fake.
This site is completely unknown, yet they have the manpower and the money to afford to pull of such an experiment? And where are the photos?

If you only have a Xbox360 and don't have the PS3, how do you know that PS3 is louder than 360?? I suggest you to leave, NOW! I mean it, LEAVE!!! You do not belongs here. Retarded fanboys...
P.S. I've sold my 360 just to buy a PS3. Man, I love my PS3 now.
Shashwat @ Aug 14th 2007 7:54AM
Im happy for the ps3 :) this is great news.
Ive had my ps3 in both orientations (H and V)
in the horizontal orientation, it NEVER made any noise at all..ran smooth as butter.
In the vertical orientation, i occasionally get a whirring sound from the disc loading mecanism as the disc is spinning..kinda worries me but i dont no what to do about it..does anyone else have a similar issue?
coccacola13 @ Aug 14th 2007 10:17AM
I'd like them to do a wii test too. A 360 test seems kind of pointless, given its history. I'm really impressed with the PS3's results, it ALMOST makes it worth the ridiculous price tag. almost.
coccacola13 @ Aug 14th 2007 10:45AM
@ Nate
Your completely right. I have 5 games for the wii and the only one that got a lot of playing time on it was wii sports. warioware was fun for a week. i recently rented Mario strikers, definitely a worthwhile investment. but from April to August, my wii was nothing but a paperweight.
HineyWipe @ Aug 14th 2007 1:16PM
Hey Killer, go play out in the middle of the freeway, wearing black clothes, at around 3am. Douchebag-immature-troll.

indestructable my left nut, it loses to a carpeted floor after a drop of a whopping 2 feet, meanwhile I dropped my 360 from 6 feet onto my driveway and all its got is a chip in the faceplate... I'm too scared to find out what would happen if I dropped my poor little wii
