How Sony plans to keep Home secure

Home's boss Peter Edwards doesn't mean to say Sony will become a hardcore policing force on the program, rather "it's a hard line to draw because we don't want to be walking around telling everyone off for saying 'bloody' so we've got to strike a balance there," but if you do something incredibly inappropriate (think MySpace inappropriate), then you'll get locked away from the PS3's internet for good. Keeping certain lobbies for certain games cleaner depending on the age demographic therein (no sex jokes in the Barbie Coliseum or whatever) is key, basically. Hopefully we all don't mind holding our tongues outside of our personal rooms in Home and hopefully we all have moderately pure intentions when talking to others. Anyone hot and bothered by this announcement?

Anyone who has a fucking problem with this can straight up shut the fuck up.
Chris @ Aug 14th 2007 11:32AM
Like every other online community there are rules, and people who act like idiots will ofcourse get a ban.
madgunde @ Aug 14th 2007 11:14AM
I think this is a fairly obvious decision, although I do hope they offer some mature content lobbies or areas where people can feel free to express themself with more colorful language.
Jase @ Aug 14th 2007 11:17AM
Lol love the pic

Sounds like a good idea though I can see large waves of greasy teenagers smashing their keyboards as they read this article.
Lummox @ Aug 14th 2007 11:30AM
When the alternative to this is the Nintendo Wifi connection friend code system (ugh!), this is both very reasonable and expected.
Now, I'm still pretty certain we'll see a hail of angst-riddled mouth-of-a-truckers running around swearing up a storm in the Barbie Lounge, it's nice to know they'll be dealt with. A user feedback reporting tool would be nice.
Then again, what Barbie playing little girl can afford a PS3??
Drdre74 @ Aug 14th 2007 12:59PM
so does these mean you can share porn in you own home space? Thats gonna suck.
Bored @ Aug 14th 2007 11:41AM
Surely, I'm expecting most Home users to behave responsibly.
Tremada @ Aug 14th 2007 11:45AM
I like this idea as well. I hate having to hear those annoying little kids with trash mouths shouting whatever they feel like. Locking the PS3 from online is a bit extreme, but I would guess they would only do that in an extreme case.

I hope Sony polices this to a certain extent. From what I've heard about XBL and the screaming latchkey kids on there, Sony should do everything to prevent that kind of human pollution on their (mine, and your) network.
money_mike_preme @ Aug 14th 2007 12:06PM
Like i got a sailors mouth, cursing every other word but even when i had an x-box 360 (before it was sold for ps3 money) i never was like "Hah Fuck you i fucking fragged you you fucking bitch!" like some of those obviously 12 year old non puberty having kids. I was more like "Fuck where da fuck dat sniper come from?!" And have a good laugh about it. But pretty much in home...i wont be doing much talking outside of private forums...dont wont "Big Brother" baning me.
Bozzie @ Aug 14th 2007 12:50PM
your right girls at the age or barbie wont have a PS3 but there will be plenty of weird old men saying there a 12 year old girl in there :P
pete @ Aug 14th 2007 12:19PM
every single halo 2 session i put in on live was filled with pretty much what you guys discribe. anonymity makes some kids grow some balls calling people niggers and fuck your mom and this and that... it doesn’t stop. havent played a session in a lonnngggg time but im sure it hasnt changed.
Microdot @ Aug 14th 2007 12:38PM
then i should go ahead and get this out of my system now......
fuck you, you fucking fuck
Toby @ Aug 14th 2007 12:30PM
Lets just hope Sony bans any Xbots that get on their friends PS3s and run around saying "HALO IS TEH RULEZ"

Crude words can be tolerable to me based on the context. Most people can disrupt the health of a chatroom without using a single swear word or sexual statement, so I hope Sony can identify the differences between innocent people who say things like, "Damn, bitch, you are fucking hot" or "How did you fucking do that?" compared to malicious people who never use a single swear word or sexual statement but talk like this, "Based on what I've seen, I think you're dumb and your family is poor and therefore, you should leave this room before you disgrace us, you nerd." Clearly, there are no profanities here, but the guy is obviously most dangerous and should be banned.
To me, I would prefer the latter to be banned rather than the former. The former just has a poor or vulgar vocabulary but harmless intentions. The latter has a good and socially acceptable vocabulary but is ill-minded and cruel. I hope Sony can tell the difference and remove the cancer before it spreads rather than accidetally removing healthy cells.

I think that the design of Home will lend itself to people behaving more like they would in a public place. Especially if there is an animation of Sony cops dragging some dude off after he crosses the line.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 14th 2007 12:46PM
Emo hair styles for home WOW so you meen i can actually experience what it is to be an EMO kid too. can i get a shirt like "i wish my lawn was emo so it could cut it self" or "when an emo kid jumps and nobody is around does he make a sound"(that one is messed up :( i know not all emo people are suicidal. there probably gonna use all your info to allow you in certain rooms. like if your retarted enough not to put that your 18 to get a master account on your PS3 then you wont be able to go into certain adult or mature pubs. Aw i wanted to put my myspace pics with my shirt off on all my walls that sucks(sarcasm).

Well shit there goes my dream of running around Home in a giant black cock suit pickin up on 12 year old chics in the Barbie lounge... DAM!!! J/k

I don't like being monitored anymore than anyone else but if they manage to keep their forums to "real talk" instead of numbers and insults I guess thats only good.
Swear words don't really bug me the least though I usually don't use any but generall annoying, immature and sick behaviour does.
If you want a break from your oh-so-hard school life by sounding like the most primitive person ever please stay offline.Thanks.
Besides they really need to take measures to prevent pirated content, erotica and such from theri network or they'd never see the end of it. The sex/spam/chracker scene would take over home in a week otherwise and all their work would be basically for nothing. Who would login to have shouted "YOu need this kind of viagra right now" "xxx girls horses hamsters and enlage your berasts at the same time" at the the very same moment?
never$$hort @ Aug 14th 2007 2:44PM
NOOOOOO... I just watched my dream of running around Home in a giant black cock suit pickin up 12 year old chics in the Barbie lounge get smashed, thanks Sony now I'll never get to live out my pedophile fantasies!!! NOOOOOOO!!! J/K
never$$hort @ Aug 14th 2007 2:46PM
On a serious note... Good job Sony keep those redneck foul-mouthed 360 lovin hicks outta Home PLEASSSE....
Andy @ Aug 14th 2007 3:02PM
Growing up I was always told not to swear, its stuck with me to the point of it sounds unnatural when I swear in sentences. As long as theres are mute function then I am happy.
One thing I would like them to do is force swearers in to lobby's with other swearers. Then they can have a your momma/your face/whatever lame slang they can think of.
Andy @ Aug 14th 2007 3:05PM

The worst part about online communities are the idiots that think they can get away with anything by acting like complete dumbasses. This is a welcome announcement.

Hm... I don't think many people here read the article... So, allow me to comment on it directly! =D
Quoted: **Home boss Peter Edward has told an audience at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival that users consistently abusing the upcoming Home service face having their machines banned and disabled from being used online, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.
In an admittedly radical but possible step, Edward noted that a serious abuser would "have to move house and buy a new PS3 before they could get online again."**
That is some serious banning there - basically taking not just an IP address but also your PSN info and using that against people. The only question is: WHAT is a SERIOUS ABUSER?... let's read on:
Quoted: **Edward was discussing supervising the Home environment, although Sony doesn't intend to become a "virtual police" force. Instead, it will be providing different areas within Home depending on the age of the user, helping to apply appropriate non-game branding for products such as cigarettes and alcohol.
"Ultimately we know a user's details, we know machine details and we know where they live," said Edward**
Woah. Now, from what I know about broadcasting S&P and how the government in the U.S. and how they feel about videogames in general (and the 'children' who play them) then cigarettes and alcohol might bring the ban-hammer down on Sony. The last sentence is a fantastic quote though, isn't it? "Ultimately we know a user's details, we know machine details and we know where they live," =D It's like Sony saying: HEY! DON'T FUCK WITH US - WE KNOW WHERE YOU FUCKING LIVE!!! Rotflmao! =D Quote of the century that one is!
Now, exactly who what where when why and how are they going to ban-hammer the populace?
Quoted: **"If you really feel like you've been abused or that someone has just shown wholly inappropriate behaviour then you are able to complain about it. If you really, really misbehave you can have your console disconnected at a machine level, so you would actually have to move house and buy a new PS3 before you could get online again.
"Clearly that's not something we would want to be doing very often but as a disincentive to mess round too much it's in our power," he admitted.**
Now, that's a great idea in theory - but what happens when teh 'tweenz get pizzled and decide to get someone into trouble?... Let's hope all claims of abuse are verified before bans are hammered out. =S
Quoted: **Rather, Sony expects players to police themselves and other users, taking advantage of various methods for blocking communication with any users that are disruptive.
"It's a hard line to draw because we don't want to be walking around telling everyone off for saying 'bloody' so we've got to strike a balance there," said Edward.
"We're going to be relying on users assessing what's appropriate to them - if they've been subject to behaviour they don't like they can complain about it rather than we walk around as virtual police."**
Well, there's the answer - the people who have genuine complaints against someone will be the catalyst for Sony's ban-hammer. Something tells me this bodes not so well for obscenity screaming tweens.
Quoted: **With a presentation featuring potential branding from Durex, Marlboro and Bacardi, Edward said that it's not Sony's intention to offer a sanitised experience, and that more mature gamers can expect to see the same products advertised online as in the real world.
"It's relatively simple to be confident that somebody is over 18. So it's no problem to have areas that are only open to those aged 18 years' and over. We are able to do that quite comprehensively, we have access to the log-in data that they use for the PlayStation Network," offered Edward.
"Undoubtedly there are going to be some things and some brands that we are not going to want to be involved in the environment at any stage.
"But a large proportion of our demographic is over 18 so we will make a point of catering to that demographic - we certainly don't want to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator," he said.**
Well said - and yet, what's Jackie Thompson going to say about this? "Advertising teh booze and teh smoke te da kiddiez? =S I think Sony will win with their ban-hammer but may eventually get the ban-hammer slammed down on them. Hopefully not.
