Sony are playing a funny game with their PSN updates aren't they? Almost in response to our
disappointment with the European update, they have released a bumper package onto the US store. A salve to heal our burns. We'll thank them for it, but don't think we'll forget where we got burnt in the first place. Anyway, enough metaphor. Let's see what's on offer today:
- DiRT Demo (free)
- NCAA Football 08 demo (free)
- Folklore "A tale of two strangers" trailer (free)
- Timeshift trailer (free)
- Heavenly Sword making-of video episode 2 (free)
- Heavenly Sword anime episode 2 (free)
- Bros Solomon movie trailer (free)
- Wall E movie trailer (free)
- Lives of Others movie trailer (free)
So, how about that then? Two demos. You don't see us complaining. The US PSN store is a pretty nice place to be. No doubt we'll have our thoughts on both of these demos up before too long. We're not sure when the store is being updated, but there's not much of the day left, so it shouldn't be too long.

Wonderous.

Oooh...DIRT,that makes my day
Hoffer @ Aug 16th 2007 7:55PM
Just checked and the stuff isn't there yet.
As to the demoes, I played both on 360 quite some time ago.
Free Thinker @ Aug 16th 2007 7:56PM
Not bad, not bad at all. Still with Lair due out in a couple of weeks, I think that demo should have been released not some Krappy NCAA 30fps EA piece of shit.
Give me Lair, and Ratchet please Sony?
Ok Euro PS3 owners, get your asses to the US store.
Ahmed @ Aug 16th 2007 7:57PM
That's perfect. I waited a long time for this.
Matt @ Aug 16th 2007 8:05PM
As a PS3 owner, these pointless updates are beginning to piss me off. Where is the Tekken online patch??? :(
Tadioku @ Aug 16th 2007 8:06PM
Matt, shut up
oldirtdog @ Aug 16th 2007 8:16PM
make a hk account on your ps3, use wirecard.com to add money to it, and download the english version of tekken 5 dr online. all the hardcore peeps did that already anyway and are playing eachother right now in the usa.
Popfrogs @ Aug 16th 2007 8:17PM
Sounds good, but as of 7pm CST, still not there.
GRT @ Aug 16th 2007 8:20PM
Not there for me either, 8:15 ET.

Matt @ Aug 16th 2007 8:40PM
Um, how about no, Tadioku? What's your problem?
Christian @ Aug 16th 2007 8:40PM
Updates are up now.
Gunegune @ Aug 16th 2007 8:47PM
Just for future reference (for those complaining the update wasn't there), the update doesn't make it to the front page or "Featured" section until it's been put in all the other sections. So if you can't find the next update there, try you luck searching within the other sections. Also try exiting the PlayStation Store, then re-entering.

WIRECARD.COM
WHERE DO I NEED TO GO ON THERE AND WHAT TO DO FOR FOREIGN STORES??
(ex: Hong Kong, Japan)
Xavier @ Aug 16th 2007 8:55PM
The image here is of Sega Rally Revo, not Dirt....just in case anyone was confused, might want to fix that
oldirtdog @ Aug 16th 2007 8:57PM
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/448243
that's the link that i followed to the t to make my hong kong account. the hk store is in english but has most if not all the stuff the japanese store has.
Matt @ Aug 16th 2007 9:21PM
Yeah, wondering the same thing. No idea what to do on Wirecard.com. And why use it? I'm guessing there's some difficulty or legal matter on downloading through the PS Store?
drdre74 @ Aug 16th 2007 9:39PM
Dirt looks sweet. Too bad I suck at race car games. I can't drive this thing for crap.
drdre74 @ Aug 17th 2007 10:12AM
All i have to say is... I'm sorry Sony! I'm sorry! I was bad mouthing Sony today after I saw the lame UK update and they must have heard my screams. They did a great update today on the Demos. Even though Stranglehold or Lair would have been nice. Something that's not on the 360 would have been GREAT!!! But this is a start!
Popfrogs @ Aug 16th 2007 10:35PM
@22: You're not alone. I just played Dirt in the Citroen car...bounced it between rocks and trees like a pinball.
I like racing games that feel more fake like Motorstorm or RR7. This game feels like you should buy a steering wheel to get good at it. I'm not complaining, it's just not my style, but the presentation is fantastic (the menu system), the music is good, and turn-by-turn commentary from a navigator is really cool.
Matt @ Aug 16th 2007 10:44PM
After getting acquainted with wirecard and the likes and seeing what I have to reveal and go through, I'll wait for the patch in the US, thank you. I was just under the impression it was being released today. I've heard August, so I'll be expecting it next week. But knowing Sony, I shouldn't get my hopes up too high -_-
John @ Aug 16th 2007 11:01PM
I happened to plug in to finish some downloads and couldn't believe it when dirt was on there.
Longest I've ever played a demo. Couldn't stop. Forgot what time it was.
It's taking me a while to get used to the feel, compared to GT4 or HD, but I'm getting used to it, you can be real twitchy, you can take risks. There is a LOT of subtlety in the feel of play... different players are going to have different styles, for sure.
Loved how they used a low-pass filter to mumble the music during quiet bits. It also seemed like the music was brighter as my car got louder. This is clever, though in replays it looks like simple ramps. I would like to see some sort of morphing, some sort of life multiple effects going on when my car is revving up and I'm getting all crazy, compared to more calmer effects when I'm driving carefully... calmer effects as in like above, diminishing the treble (and this could be over a sine-wave or something, it needn't be stagnant, so fx during calm play could feel/sound like being underwater, but on hyper play I would like something psychedelic, hence the warbling, 3d, spatial/ etc. stuff for when I'm really running revs.
But yeah, gorgeous game, few complaints, the more I watch the more I see.

"On the PLAYSTATION 3 system, one 3.2 GHz SPU vector co-processor is dedicated to audio and delivers 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound, using third-order Ambisonic soundfields for the most realistic positioning." (from the Codemasters' website)
For those who are more used to arcade car games, take your car out to a wet empty parking lot, some rainy night. Rev it around and get the feel of it. Or do this in an abandoned lot.
It's nothing like the arcade games, but it's more like the simulations, like dirt.
You can see how big changes in a small amount of time (spinning out and yanking the steering wheel opposite, then back again) are different to your lead line than more subtle changes over time, and everything in between.
Racing simulations are all physics games. They basically try to replicate physics of some real-world situation to some degree that we can appreciate using some buttons and analog controllers.
Neil @ Aug 17th 2007 12:33AM
Just downloaded the Dirt Demo and I have to say it was way better than I thought it would be. The colin mcrae games had kinda lost me after Colin Mcrae 2005 which was just too floaty and just didn't feel right. But Dirt really felt quite good and now I'm thinking am gonna buy the full game.
Shrimp @ Aug 18th 2007 8:50AM
Side note; You are using a Sega Rally Revo image to announce the release of the Dirt demo.
:D
Ali @ Aug 17th 2007 5:50AM
What the hell, we get a sodding demo thats been out for weeks on the US store for a game that crap and no one bought yet the US again gets content.
Wait a minute, isn't there more people who own PS3 in Europe, since the US typically seems to be 360 ground.
This just makes no damn sense and its really starting to tick me off.
And yes if I wanted to I could sign up a false account, but why should I have to?
KeVil @ Aug 17th 2007 6:12AM
For Christmas I think we should get Sony an atlas with a large circle around Europe with the words "We are here"....
coplice @ Aug 17th 2007 8:23AM
cmon euro ppl.. i wasnt complaining when ou got Darkness demo before US, i just used my euro account and thats it, everyone should have an North America/Europeen/Hong Kong account till Sony make 1 PS Store for the whole world
Josh @ Aug 17th 2007 8:46AM
not a bad update, its no lair or ratchet and clank, but hey, im not complaining. I just downloaded and tried out the dirt demo, i think ill stick with motorstorm. New folklore trailer is pretty sweet tho.
Ian @ Aug 17th 2007 9:03AM
@28 Ali
I'm in the UK and have been annoyed many times by lack of quality updates to the Euro PSN Store. After reading through the comments on this thread though I finally plucked up the determination to create a USA account and I can honestly say that it was a very easy. The most taxing part was googling for a restaurant address in Baltimore MD to enter as my fake USA address. Once the account was set up it took me about 10 minutes to download the DIRT demo and get playing.
Well worth the investment of 15 minutes to set up a USA account!!!
don_sf @ Aug 17th 2007 9:59AM
yes the uk seems to be the smallest of priorities for sony.
maybe it is because of that pal and ntsc thing or maybe they just dont want to.
personally, after paying 425£ which must be somewhere around 850$ us for the ps3, i feel i should be entitled to these demos and content. however, usa/hong kong account it is.
never$$hort @ Aug 17th 2007 11:34AM
Well, Dirts graphics looked really good, but I think I'll just stick with Motorstorm... Dirts controls were WAY to stiff feeling for me and it wasnt nearly as exciting in my opinion. One cool thing I did like was when the race was over it gave you total control over the replay of the whole race, you could speed up, slow-motion, reverse or whatever... I wish that replay aspect was included in Motorstorm too since it is much more intense and excting, plus you could watch all your incredible wrecks in slo-mo!!
don_sf @ Aug 17th 2007 5:06PM
ok i got a a usa us account and got dirt.
looking to be a great game, looks great.
at the first atempt on rookie i came 15th lol, but by the third i became first. hopefully it isnt like all rally games, were after u get used to it you can easily do the whole game.
Andy @ Aug 18th 2007 11:06AM
NOTE TO EA AND ACTIVISION
What skating game I get depends on which one has a better demo? (which ones more fun)
