PlayStation 3 outsells the 360 in July, sez Pachter
According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, the PlayStation 3 finally outsold the 360 in July due to a combination of the E3 price drop and the 360's warranty announcement. His final numbers for the new consoles in July had the Wii on top as usual with 330k, the PS3 in second place with 160k and the 360 last with 115k . This represents a roughly 2x increase in PS3 sales compared to the month before.Considering the price drop wasn't even in effect the entire month, it will be interesting to see what happens with PS3 sales in August. We're also finally starting to get games, which always helps out sales as well (though the only big title, Warhawk, is coming out at the very end of August). Of course the 360's price drop also went into effect, and their big games are starting to trickle out a little earlier so it's hard to judge what will happen. Hopefully Sony can keep the momentum up!

Considering that the PS3 "Price Drop" will stop next month I think that it will drop down behind the 360. Everone is just buying the clearance sale PS3's, because they will be gone pretty soon. Sadly this will probably not reflect future months. =(
Andy @ Aug 18th 2007 11:28PM
@1
Are you joking me. There were no good games released in July imagination how well the PS3 will sell once games like Warhawk, Lair, Ratchet, Uncharted, the list goes on and on.
"Sadly this will probably not reflect future months"
Nice concession. But I doubt you would feel sad if the sales continued to beat the Xbox 360.
So Sony...what did you learn?
Andy @ Aug 18th 2007 11:28PM
"imagination how well"
Hahaha. I really gotta stop using the built in Firefox dictionary...it sucks.

what are you talking about sony's price drop doesn't end they're just waiting until they sell thier entire ps3 60gb stock.
Jason B. @ Aug 18th 2007 11:40PM
Highimpact - the price drop will not end next month unless Sony runs out of 60GB PS3s. They stated that they had enough to last the rest of the year.

Sez? That's broken English. Shame on you Colin McRae!

Hahahaha..."Points out the obivious (alot)" pachter.
He gets paid 6 figures for this? Wow...>;>
Here's my prediction: There will be a huge boast in sales for the 360 in september (partly do to halo 3 being released) Oh and do to the new games coming out this fall.
My other predictions: The ps3 will continue to sell well, do to the price drop and the addition of some awesome games. Oh, and the wii will still have a "Manufactoring problem", limited supplies in the holiday season and last-gen graphics still....
Now where's my 6 figures? Oh right, I'm not working for a company in a 110 billion dollar industry. I completely forget. >;>

Wii = Toyota camry, of course it'll sell more than a ferrari or bentley. That doesn't mean the benley or mercedes is crap because they sell less than the camry. I do not want to only play games. And I expect my machine to do gaming right, visually.
360 sells well because choosing between a PS3 or 360 requires mathematical analysis. And guess which group can do the math correctly and which group can't, ending up in buying more add-ons and clutter to their entertainment center later on. Think about it. All the good movies are on bluray. The 360 doesn't have bluray. 11 million 360 owners will want to watch hi-definition movies and wipe out their dvd collection at some point in time. What's their next purchase going to be? If they'r a gamer, maybe a PS3 as a standalone bluray player. Really, who's stupid enough to think that they're going to watch SD upconverted on their new HD television forever? Prediction? 360 owners rummaging the aisles at best buy to purchase standalone bluray players now or in the two years and probably buying the worse one and thinking they got a good deal on it, too. Ironically, they'll become allies in bringing down HD-DVD. We'll see. I might be wrong. But I might be right.
And who says the 360 is selling well? It's doing only a handful more in sales than the original xbox did at this point in time. But in any case, with Bioshock and Halo coming out soon, you know they Microsoft will be here to stay, due to "secret handshakes" in dark alleys with developers and the media and shady business practices of trolling.
I'm not missing out because i'm not a fan of violent, crack cocaine, death metal types of games like Gears of War. Ratchet and Clank and NGS and motorstorm are good enough for me, along with all the PS2 and PS1 i've never played because I've never owned those systems. I don't play games all my life. I'm not going to put a machine in my entertainment center to play only games I don't like at such a high price as $300-$400 and then find out it's defective or that a better version is coming out later on. And then have to go into best buy a week or two later to buy a standalone bluray player because the HD-DVD qualiy of the add on is no good and that all the good movies are only bluray. And then kick myself when after research, I find out that the PS3 is the best valued Bluray player on earth. And yeah, it plays games too. And it actually plays a lot of 360 games to boot. Along with PS2 and PS1 games.
I bought 2 PS3's and a few others have done so. I don't see why anyone would buy two or more 360s unless one is defective.
Let's brign the 360's price up to the PS3's price level and see how well it competes with the PS3 at the same price. That'll determine if people truly feel the 360 is a better machine.
I can buy as many 360's as I want. It's just not valuable to me.
And no offense to the 360 people. If any is offended, I'll take back all I've said and aplogize. This is an anonymous writing and I'm just blunt because of it, but I don't want to hurt your feelings if you're a good person and innocent.

Well if only we had the population
(in the states) be as heartful as secret is on a subject...sure there were several fallacies (which I guess can be counted as solely opinion based), but why can't people be indepth with things that truely matter in real life. Like politics...oh wait that would be boring, yet it controls 99% of your life. Wooohooo video games!
Doug @ Aug 19th 2007 12:31AM
Why is everyone here always comparing to the 360? Don't we think the PS3 is good enough that it doesn't always have to be in the 360's shadow?

Because of marketing, huh? Looks like Gamepro along with EGM and the New York Times are the hired marketing companies then. Look at how they grade the Wii compared to the PS3 and we can see that they're really marketing companies, not reviewers. I guess the Wii just has a better selection of games, that's all. Right. Remember how the New York Times bashed the PS3 on launch day, saying that the PS3 lacked rumble in its controller and was therefore worse than the 360? But do you think it was ethical for the New York Times to leave out the fact that the PS3 has the SIXAXIX? In comparing the two controllers, they talk about the 360's rumble but never mentioned the motion sensor in the PS3. And since when do we give a console only 1 day to 1 week to prove itself compared that's been given two years to prove itself. This example and the Gamepro Wii rating are the "hidden" marketing that's the cause of all this unfairness we've been seeing. Think of how professor Umbridge behaved to Harry Potter and all the teachers in the order of the phoenix books and you will see how the PS3 has been treated. All the media have behaved just as professor Umbridge behaved with Harry Potter by twisting facts and writing up phoney negative reports to promote one console while bashing another. Remember how Umbridge as the high inquisitor wrote about Hagrid in her investigation? Gamepro, EGM, and all the other media - you are guilty as anyone. You are the marketors, not Nintendo or Microsoft. And you know it. People who don't have the time to research. They read your magazines, hoping that you've done the job for them correctly. But we're all humans. Even journalists have conflicts of interests, agendas, anger, jealousy, lust, love, and so on, at times. We're all human. And the PS3 will suffer for it. Nintendo's marketing? Or Gamepro's and EGM's marketing on their behalf? Who in here is having a hard time choosing from a wide selection of quality Wii games? Raise your hands, according to Gamepro.
Perception is key, and who's been creating these perceptions that Nintendo and Microsoft has a good game selection or features. Nintendo? Who influences these perceptions, (gamepro, EGM, etc)? WHO influencing these perceptions (gamepro, EGM, etc)? Who's been giving the Wii all these high ratings for their massively high quality game selections? So high quaity compared to the PS3 that all Wii owners are having such a hard time choosing which one to buy. Right. So high that almost every game has scored below average. So high that Microsoft has won only 11 awards at E3 out of the billions of games its got, wherease the PS3 has been out for less than a year but managed to earn 8 awards with only a handful of games it's got. That's quality to me.
But I guess that's how the game played. Even journalists are human. Even journalists need to eat. Need money. Even journalists break rules every now and then, hate, have anger, love, show compassion -- have feelings and *** personal agendas like everyone else. It's all a part of being human. And I think that's why the PS3 is suffering the negative presses like the one whereby the New York Times purposely ommitted information in a cross comparion between the PS3 and the 360 controller to make the the PS3 look bad. I own shares of stock in Microsoft, but I can't say that I'd buy the 360 over the PS3. I just won't. I see enough value in the PS3 to buy two of them. I can't even imagine buying one 360, let alone buying two. If I wasn't careful in my analysis and research to find a console that suited my needs best, I may have looked at their reviews of shit talking and bought a 360 or Wii instead. Fortunately, I took the time to do the research necessary and just look at their ratings or I would've been one unhappy customer and wouldn't even have realized it. But to be fair, it's not like I disagree with everythign tyou say and recfommend all the time. Just occassionaly. NO one is right all the time, I'm assuming. Not even journalists. WE're all humans.
Sony should win the Bluray format war now and rid of HD-DVD. Once that happens, all 360 owners and Wii owners will eventually want to replace DVD movies with Hi-defintiion playback. Because Bluray is the only option, they'll have to buy a bluray player to match their brand new swanky HDTV to show off with. When they do their research, they'll find out that the PS3 is the best valued Bluray standalone out there for them, especially if they like games. And the PS3 sales will increase as most 360 owners and Wii owners will use the PS3 as a standalone bluray player. If the PS3 is not the lowest priced player by that time, well, at least Sony can bank on the Bluray licensing fees on disks and bluray players sold or however it's arranged. It's important that they finish off HD-DVD, from this one perspective of many other possibilities. I'm not surprised to guess that many 360 owners and Wii owners have already begun their search for Bluray Players and, thus, hasten HD-DVD's downfall. Unless another format or Hi-Definition downloaded movies become the next best thing. The PS3 is a find machine. Even if a handful of 360 ports don't look good on it but considering that it's a bluray and DVD player of one of the highest quality out there, I'm satisfied. I'm very satisifed with Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Fight Night 3, Call of Duty 3, and other 360 ports. Looking at Call of Duty 4 and Oblivion and Dirt, I can tell that the Port quality will be a THING OF THE PAST. Developers will have no more excuses over time. The PS3 isn't a hard machine to develop for. It's a new machine. And like anything new in school, you take time to learn a new subject. It's not hard, it's new. For me, anything above the graphical level of a Wii, xbox, and PS2 is good enough. And even the crappiest PS3 port of 360 games pass that test with flying colors.
However, You can look at Grand Turismo 5, and you can tell that from now on that any bad games are not due to the technical limiations of the PS3. It's based soley on the creativity and the talents of the developers. The PS3 is the most powerful and ideal pen and paper on earth at the moment based on what Grand Turismo 5 has shown. The kind of stories you get from the pen and paper are now totally dependant on the talents of the writers (a.k.a developers), not the machine. The machine has done its part. Go and look at Grand Turismo 5 or maybe even MGS4, and you can no longer question the PS3's core power. Did I mention that I watch bluray movies on this thing most of the time? Oh, and I've played Ninja Gaiden Sigma so much that my neck has been aching for a week now. For me, this machine is a darling. I'm more than happy with it. It doesn't even break down on me, either. Wow. AND it looks good. AND I can enjoy my movies in absolute quite. I also like the black color because black absorbs light, which means that during movie or gaming, I don't even see the PS3 at all. Of course, I cut out small pieces of car window tint and stick it over the Power on and off led to reduce the glare. When Ratchet and Clank and all the Harry Potter and Transformers the Movie and Spiderman movies and Star Wars movies and the Chronicles of Narnia and the Polar Express come out on Bluray, I will not be more satisfied and full of content. Had I listend to Gamepro or EGM's "console grading," I would have never anticipated all these things to enjoy at such a reasonable cost in one absolutely solid as a rock machine. To think that I might have been stuck with just Gears or Zelda and Wii sports. I prefer all of this over the gorey and crack head heroine heavy metal buzzsaw gears of war horror movie games.
Please excuse the sloppy writing. It's just I don't really care... ha ha..

Ok, I revised the paragraph to look more grammatical. But still...so what...can't wait for the movies to come out with Ratchet and Clank, sice I've played that before...I've never owned the PS2 or PS2. Until now, at least with the PS3's awesome full backwards compatbility. I boubht both of the PS3's during launch window, so they have the Emotion Chip inside.
But in any case, back to the PS3 while I'm here. Don't like the PS3 games? Play the 360 ports. Don't like the PS3 ports? Play the PS2 games. Don't like the PS2 games? Play the PS1 games. Listen to CD's. Don't like CD's? Listen to multichannel SACD playback. Don't like SACD playback? Listen to MP3. Don't like judder in movies? Use the 1080p@24hz feature for cinemtion 3-3 pulldown motion. Don't like MP3? Share photos. Don't like sharing photos? Do your home on it as a PC. Don't like doing homework and rersearch on it? I can give a rat's ass about Gears of War or Bioshock or any of that crap. Who the hell would spend so much money $300-$400 + $100 plus on internet fees just to play two to three games? And play ONLY games, nothing else. Especially on a loud, clunky, prone to damage toy that looks ugly. And then because most humans today will eventually switch to Hi-defintion movies, unless downloads are the next rave, who the hell will be going out to buy another bluray player - the PS3 to accompany their "inexpesive" $300-$400 three game machine?
Well, no hard feelings. Just sharing my thoughts. And I'm not PS3 fanboy, so don't expect me to revise adn double check my writings. And like before, no hard feelings. I know some of you 360 people are decent folks, and I don't want you to feel hurt. You have your circumstances that made you decide to buy the 360, and that's your money. What's important is that you're happy with it and that you don't detrimentally affect me...!!! lol.

Again, you'll have to excuse my writing at the moment. I'm a bit carless tonight. But just one last note that I've mentioned several times already. We already know that journalists have biases and emotions and perceptions and personal agendas and conflics of intersts and greed and compassion like all humans do, and thus it may reflect in their writing to suit their intent. But one thing should better determine which machine is better than the other once and for all, since you can't really depend on "objective" journalist that aren't just kids in a candy store having a splurge.
1) Lay out on paper all the facts about two machines in terms of features and power and so on and game coming out -- all games, including PS2 and PS1 and xbox games THAT ARE COMPATIBLE.
2) Raise the xbox360's price to the PS3's price at $499 and $599.
Once the 360 is at the PS3's price level, we'll truly see which console is better. Heck, raise the Wii's price to the PS3's level, too. Let's see how well it does at that price range. Now we'll know for sure which machine consumers know is better or not.
secret @ Aug 19th 2007 2:33AM
Raise your price to the PS3's price, and let's see how tough you really are. Ten dollars says that the PS3 will eat the 360 alive.

I got over the fact that Halo 3 is the media darling when I learned that I'll be playing games like Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted, Rachet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, GT5, Infamous, FFXIII, White Knight Story, Folklore, The Eye of Judgement, L.A. Noire, Tekken 6, and a few others. Actually, I'm not gonna lie, I got over it after I played Resistance.

LOL I bought a 360 and I'm happy bout it. Okay who cares that the ps3 can play a freaking Blue ray? I dont even care about high def, I dont even have a high def - add on to my 360. Like most people, I don't see that much of a difference. Also whoever said that 360 owners are stupid because 360 only plays games are retarded. LOL of course I bought the 360 just for games. Just as how I bought the ps2 ps1 n64 and all those for games. I didn't buy it to watch some freaking movie. If the movie was that important to me, I'd watch it in theatres. Plus the community. Who has a fucking ps3? NOBODY. Everybody has a 360, thus which would I choose. Play with my friends on 360 for about 400 bucks. Or play with nobody on ps3 for 600 bucks? The choice is clear. And going about games. Ps3 has no games. 360 has Bioshock and Halo. Plus 360's framerate for Madden 08 is TWO TIMES FASTER then Ps3's framerate for madden 08. THAT'S HILARIOUS. Only game you guys got comin to ya is MGS3. Only reason I'd ever regret not buying a Ps3. But I'm not going to pay fucking 600$ for a dvd player and MGS3. Only a retard who actually spent his money for something like that, would try to justify why he bought it, on a website. Plus Ratchet sucks.
Don @ Aug 19th 2007 3:36AM
@20
It's funny when you guys that can't afford the good things in life say things like, "Who cares about HD, I can't hardly tell the difference between standard definition and high definition." Lol, what are fucking blind you jack ass?
Plus, you're being so short sighted when you say that you bought the 360 because more people own the 360 as opposed to the PS3. Think about it genius, the 360's been out a year longer than the PS3. Once more people start switching over to the current gen from playing their PLAYSTATION TWOs, more people will own a PS3 than a 360, you can count on it.
Especially with the news that MicroSoft can't figure out what's wrong with it's machines, hence the 3 year extended warranty. You know why they extended it for 3 years,(here's a hint, they didn't do it because they're so damn generous), it's because they don't see themselves getting it worked out in the foreseeable future. This is why more people will end up buying a PS3 once more people start switching over to the current gen, Sony has made one hell of a console. One that has a .02% failure rate as opposed to a 30+% failure rate. You know what's funny, you mention that the 360 Madden's FPS is twice the amount as that of the PS3's, you forgot to mention that the 360's F.U.R. is some ungodly amount more than the PS3's too. By the way, if you are wondering what FUR stands for, it's Fuk-Up-Rate, you like that.
Think about what you say before you actually say it, that way you don't sound like a dumbass all the time. Oh yeah, only a retard would purchase something they know is bound to brake.
WTangoFoxtrot @ Aug 19th 2007 3:45AM
well aside from the negative press i know everyone planning on buying a 360 has been waiting for MS to solve the issue with the overheating. given the new heatsink equipped 360s have started to flood the market the trend should reverse. i wonder why he dint mention that in his report....

BioShock for the mother fucking Win: http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/bioshock
the demo fricken rocked hard.
GOTY? most likely game of the next several years. i don't know anyone who can dispute this game's brilliance.
for PC or 360, it sure is a hell of lot cooler than whatever the PS3 is and will be coming out with.
Don @ Aug 19th 2007 4:50AM
@23
I call b/s. I don't believe you have a PS3, if you do: great, but I don't think you do. If you did, why when you mentioned Halo 3, BioShock, and Mass Effect did you not mention games like Heavenly Sword, UT3, and Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3? Why does it slip your mind about games like LittleBigPlanet, Warhawk, and all the other Sony exclusives? Plus, you mention that Tekken will be online, Tekken 6 is a PS3 exclusive jackass, your argument goes right out the window.
Then you go on by telling us that the 360 has a library of great games and we shouldn't be talking about games with the potential of being good in the future because who knows how good these games are going to be. Then why the hell did you say right after that, that Halo 3 is going to be great, BioShock is going to be excellent, and Mass Effect looks sweet? Why can you talk about future games for the 360 but we shouldn't talk about future games for the PS3?
Like I said, I call b/s. I think you guys say that you own both so that when you talk up the 360 and put down the PS3, it sounds more legit. Then you say some b/s like,"I'm not trying to trash the PS3, these are just my true feelings. I'm just trying to share the inner me with you guys." Where do they get these guys?
You post on #24 that I'm an idiot. Then you say that the PS3 doesn't have a huge following right now, but the 360's been out a year longer than the PS3, hmmmm....I wonder if that's the reason.
So you talk about Sony dropping the price early in the game. It's called business and strategy. Something that you are too naive to understand. I shouldn't expect you to understand seeing that you think a 30+% failure rate as opposed to a .02% failure isn't that bad, lol.
Finally you mention that Sony will never have an epic system seller like the Halo series. Seriously when I read this, I almost pissed my pants from laughter. Did Sony need Halo to sell 120,000,000 PS2s. I think Sony does just fine selling systems without the Halo series.

In Denmark, the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 with a ratio on 6:1, and Wii with 3,5:1. The retailer (who has about 100 shops around Denmark) says that the sales boosted after Sony launch Starter Pack in Europe.I don't understand that Sony stop the price drop in US, and remove the Starter Pack in Europe (according to Nordic Film Interactive, they do) I know they looses money on every sold console, but now they have the chance to get mllions of PS3's out to the homes :)Last thing: The PS3 has got a unofficaly pricedrop in Denmark, it's about $264, so you can easily get the PS3 here for about $720, 535€ or 370£ and the price at launch was about $900 to $982. That is NICE :D

Don, Ps2 sold well because it was cheap.
the Wii sells because it's cheap. the 360 sells well because it's cheap. (even tho past 360's are actually made cheap they are working on this heheheh)
in fact most 360 owners are previous Ps2 owners, mostly because of the games and price tag. hell i was rootin and tootin Odin Sphere, God of War 2 and Tomb Raider: Anniversary before climbing into the world of Bioshock.
PS3 seems pretty cool. but without that ONE gotta have it game, that's all it will be to me: pretty cool.
i won't go into why i think the PS3 lineup this fall doesn't interest me. but i will end with saying that the PS3 has alot of promise and i will certainly buy one next year...when MGS4 comes out and developers learn to create better ports for the PS3.
this year belongs to 360. next year: PS3.
WTangoFoxtrot @ Aug 19th 2007 5:36AM
sure this year and the last year definitely belong to the 360 but what makes one say that next year will be the PS3s ? for all you know the 360 may get Allen wake, Gears of war 2 and maybe some other good shit even. at E3 this year MS showed off only the games to be released this year unlike sony whose portfolio was mainly from next year. next year shall be decided next year, we are living in this year right now and thats all that matters.
ohh and lets keep the focus around gaming ppl. as a regular uni student i really cant afford a PS3 or blu-ray movies. sony's console seems to be something only the rich kids i know at uni have ( the kind that done have to pay their own tuition ). for regular folks like us the 360 is the only choice. sure if Sony made a console equally priced as the 360 and that had the same quality games catalogue my money would be with them right now, what do i care, their just corporations.
ryano @ Aug 19th 2007 5:47AM
next year i'm only excited for MGS4 and Fable 2.
oh, and sweet sweet SC 4. 8p
Killzone 2 and Gears 2 just are not my forte.
this year it's all about Halo 3 (forge mode is like Little Big Planet!!) Mass Effect, Bioshock and pretty much every multiplatform game(hey if it plays better on one system it's a no brainer!).
GL @ Aug 19th 2007 7:10AM
"ryano: in fact most 360 owners are previous Ps2 owners,"
Uh. No. Most 360 owners are xbox 1 owners. Most PS2 owners haven't even bought a next gen console.
railven @ Aug 19th 2007 8:21AM
I've considered myself a hardcore gamer since I was a kid.
I've realized a big trend with today's generation of hardcore gamers. Maybe it is my own interpretation of "hardcore."
How many people posting here have all the next-gen systems? That includes a PC running with DX10 hardware?
As of right now I'm terribly disappointed for the "console" section of the gaming world. It is lack luster, very.
I keep hearing about the 360's great library and every time I walk down the aisle I see:
1. A game I already own, beat, and probably looks better on my PC.
2. A game that only deserves a rental, if that.
3. A new IP that requires a buy.
So I bought Gears of War and Lost Planet and guess what, PC versions are coming out using DX10, extra content, and probably better gameplay/mods with a larger feature set of downloadable content. So that pisses me off because I had already dished out $120 dollars for those two "exclusives." I wonder if anyone knows what "exclusive" means anymore. And I know this is an ongoing issue with Developers.
I walk down the PS3 aisle and I see again:
1. Games I already own for PC.
2. Games just don't spark any interest because they aren't my genre or I already played them for 360 (and since I also don't own them for the 360 chances are they sucked balls.)
I'm getting tired of Sony's games getting delayed. I was lucky enough to get a launch console (and I remember reading all the rumors about systems dying so I was nervous of my launch console but how ironic that my 360 bought 1.5 yrs after launch died first) and whoever is saying "who cares about HD" should really just relax. I understand the PS3 has no decent titles but at least its getting used. 300, DVD-Upscaling, and PS1/PS2 playback. My only gripe is no official PS2-Guitar Dongle for PS3.
And judging by first hand experience - 360 Premium does not have an HDMI output so you can't upscale DVD movies to 1080P and standard DVDs look better on my PS3 versus my 360. The HD-DVD add-on for non-HDMI 360's is a waste of money since regardless who wins the HD-Format war non-HDMI 360/PS3 (At least Sony cancelled out the 20GB and MS is starting to ship with HDMI) are non-HDCP compliant. So whenever, if ever, studios turn on that flag anyone stuck with a non-HDMI unit will not get true HD output. But from what I've read Sony might offer a unlock feature that will only work on PS3 20GB versions to off-set this and if it is true, the 20GB PS3 might become a pirate's treasure.
The Wii...go down the aisle and I see:
1. Uninspired games obviously targeted towards kids.
2. A laundry list of accessories I NEED if I want to play specific games.
Nintendo has always been the best at ripping us, the consumers, off. People compare the 360's add-on list, look at the Wii. You need to dish out almost 100 dollars just to have 2xWii Motes, 2xNunchuks, 2xClassic Controllers. And I don't hear people bitching about that.
This generation is pathetic. I want the inspired creators of the PS2/Xbox/GC generation. At least then I had reasons to turn off my PC every once in a while.
Yeah, Bioshock (PC), Mass Effect (PC), Alan Wake (PC), and after Halo 2 I pretty much said screw Halo. Their graphical engine was an insult to the Xbox hardware and to anyone openly accept that and call Bungie one of the best developers is the same kind of person that openly accepts the 360's 30%+ failure rate and smiles as they wait for their replacement unit.
Until either company delivers true EXCLUSIVES my PC will have my attention.
[And I know all the games that are coming out soon, but they aren't out yet so I won't even use them in my arguement.]

rfom @ Aug 19th 2007 10:35AM
360 owners, simple test
Make a list of ten top games you would have played over 2006-07 on 360
From that list, remove the shooter games which you play, with better graphics, far superior m+kb controls and free multiplayer on an entry level core 2duo + dx10 card - available for say GBP500
See what you are left with (no GRAW, Oblivion, R6, Gears, Bioshock, Lost Planet, and you know it - Halo 3, out soon on PC)
See what I mean?

i believe it's a mix of Xbox 1 and PS2 owners, but since the 360 came out the gates with next gen Sports games, you can bet alot of PS2 Madden players flocked!
@rfom,
who the hell cares, the console market feeds on console games. even tho PC and Console are getting almost the same price range (well not $350 opposed to $800) the people who are playing consoles will stick to the consoles.
sure some play both but not everyone can afford a nice PC. And some of the games you mentioned have been on 360 first then ported to PC. the same damn thing can be said about the PS3.
so no, i don't see what you mean. this fall will see a superior Virtua Fighter 5 online, Mass Effect, Halo 3 (yes it will be on PC eventually...but it will pwn PS3 FIRST!) and superior versions of multiplatform games that developers can actually work with!
we would've had GTA IV with the exclusive content, but thanks to the "difficult" PS3 it's been pushed back to next year. (360 has always been the flagship system for GTA IV...so you know it works on the console, but where's the PS3 version?!)
Kevin @ Aug 19th 2007 11:17AM
Has anyone noticed that the only games 360 owners ever talk about is Gears of War, Halo, BioShock, Mass Effect, or Crackdown.(Rarely Crackdown but I've seen it in friends.)
It would seem to me those are the only games they got that are good and exclusive. I also have never seen a 360 owner realize that their content is compromised because of DVD.
And wait what was this site called?
I'm pretty sure it wasn't 360 fanboy.
If you're here because you think you like both stop complaining about the PS3.
If you like both admit they both have it's strong points.
The 360 has Xbox Live and more games because of an earlier release date.
The PS3 has some motion sensing, longer, more beautiful, more levels ETC.
Wait did I read that it was about games. Did I not see so many sites saying that the console war coincides with the format war. And it would also seem to me that Blu-Ray is winning seeing as Blu-Ray movies continually outsell HD DVD Movies.
Once Toshiba realizes that it most likely lost and gives up,
will the console war end with the PS3 as the victor.
I have seen a 360 owner realize that Blu-Ray will win no doubt.
Joe @ Aug 19th 2007 11:30AM
Cool! go PS3! this article will, of course, bring massive amounts of defensiveness from 360 owners, and none whatsoever from people who own both. Both systems have good games, and, unfortunately, the people referring to how they bought 360's for games alone and then go on to bash PS3's for their blu-ray capability are missing a crucial point--that the PS3 is just another means for promoting blu.
It is nice to see these figures. Maybe developers will stop being lazy and figure out the patterns for coding games, which will, in turn, bring me some sweet new guns/swords. I just want to slash fools...and now no one can blame the lack of the ps3's sales for their lethargy in figuring out the system's programming. And, if they do, i hate them.
heh @ Aug 19th 2007 11:26AM
ATTENTION:Some people dont give a rats ass about Halo 3.
Hollar!! @ Aug 19th 2007 11:31AM
And, honestly, if people can drop $450 on a 360, I have a feeling that fifty dollars extra wouldn't be the end of the world.
I was hoping there wouldn't be much argument on this thread, but then what would men have if not machismo? Oh well. Both systems really do have great games (and a lot of them, ports,) both are pretty, and competition will just continue to support the spew of great games for both. When looking at the reasoning for the debate of 360 vs. ps3, all I can see are people who regret dropping a half g on both, and therefore defend their decision with blatant resentment.

I own a Playstation 3 and 360. i had planned the Playstation for a while but my mate got a 360 and i was impressed so i bought one. I have gone through 3 360's, and am pissed that after buying the system i had to shell out over £100 ($200) on accessories. And as for games? FPS=all the same so the only game i have for the 360 is Dead RISing. The playstation 3 on the other hand has convinced me that i need to get an HDTV. It's the only games console i know that you can play for hours with no disc. Also, when i bought it, that was it. no extra internets adaptor or SD reader. Games may not be the best, but at least Sony haven't gone for one genre. 2007 holiday season(plans) - 360 traded in and Playstation used near-constantly. Stop Arguing. 360 isn't very good. My mate that owns it agrees with me. he only has Gears Of War and Dead Rising, and is thinking of buying the Playstation also.
Jay Are Baboon @ Aug 19th 2007 1:42PM
the 360 and ps3 have good things and bad things about them. the 360 is gettin better developed games for the simple fact its been out longer. the ps3 is gettin good games if you compare where the 360 was this long after launch (gears was not out yet). the 360 also has better online and more people online. thats b/c the ps3 came out a year after COMPETITION. its not hard to sell a system when it has no competition.
IMO- the 360 is almost at its peak. what games are comin out Q3 2008 and beyond. gears of war 2? what else? ps3 is being updated monthly and will (eventually) be on XBL status. when that happens, the ps3 will look better b/c online gameplay is free. the 360 can have long games... it could use 2+ discs. the ps3 has enough space on the dicsc (thx to blu-ray) to fit (not squeeze) on a single disc. this is more appealing. the format war doesnt really affect the 360 b/c you dont have to buy the HD DVD add-on. i like my ps3. it is a 10 years system. in less than 10 years, ps3 will be more popular than ps2 is now.

The one thing we all agree on is the PS3 sold more than the 360 in July right?
While we can argue til were blue in the face about which ones better we can all agree the pricecut sparked PS3 sales.
I don't think Halo 3 will sell as many consoles as people think. If you wanted Halo you already got a 360.

I'm the happiest I can be with Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Motorstorm, Resistance Fall of Man, Virtua Fighter 5, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Fight Night 3, Call of Duty 3 and even though I'm not even done with these games yet, MGS4 and Heavenly Sword and Call of Duty 4 and Ratch and Clank: Tool of Destruction and Grand Turismo 5 are coming out soon, not alone the wide selection of PS2 and PS1 and PSN network games I've never played yet -- like Metal Slug Anthology or God of War and God of War 2 or Tekken 5 dark resurrection or War Hawk. In addition, I'm getting all fat and bloated with bluray movies coming out soon or already out like Harry Potter 1-2-3-4-5, Spiderman 1-2-3, Transformers the Movie, Hellboy, Bridge to Terabithia, Star Wars 1-2-3-4-5-6, the Polar Express, all the Pixar movies, all the Disney movies like the Chronicles of Narnia, Casino Royale, and so on. All these things for me to enjoy on one solid like a rock machine at the most affordable price I can imagine. That has more value than a $300-$500 machine with $100 - $200 internet fees for three to four years that only plays Gears, Bioshock, and Halo. And Gears and Bioshock, I'm told, can be bought for my PC to play on. And we all have PC's. If I had been lazy and just read this review an trusted them, I'd end up with a Wii or a 360. And I'd be out shopping for a new standalone bluray player because I know that the HD-DVD on the 360 has poor quality and that HD-DVD has barely any movies to watch on. And then, after careful research to see which standalone bluray player is best for my entertainment center, I find that all audio & video reviewers say that the PS3 is a safe bet, especially if you like to play games, too. Then, because of Gamepro's bloated review. I end up buying a PS3 anyways, but now I have a piece of junk 360 and $300-$400 + $50 or $200 less money. Do your research and think. Don't just listen.
Mike @ Aug 19th 2007 5:03PM
Just so everyone's clear, Pachter GUESSED about these numbers. They aren't hard numbers, they're his opinion. Bear that in mind as you tear one another apart in these comments.
I do think it's a good guess - regardless of whether the PS3 or 360 sold more in July, I'm sure it was much closer than it's been so far, and that's great for Sony. However, I'd recommend holding all declarations of victory for the release of the NPD numbers.

Its funny, im reading all these posts, and about how your all proud of this price drop helping ps3 out vs 360. Is this what its come to for you guys? a petty competiton? who CARES anymore more? Im Nintendo and Sony back, but more Nintendo than sony, but besides the point. I could just sit here and try to flame you guys about how just the DS alone is killing all three in sales world wide. Why dont I you ask? Ill tell you, theres no point to it ,as gamers and reporters we should look at this objectively, leave the competition to the big wigs upstairs. Devolopers should take a page from each other, I mean ALL 3 from Nintendo to Sony-To microsoft. Look at what makes each other succesful and try to emulate that. Nintendo went down the route of simplicity, and look at the success they are garnering just from that change of mindset. They could have easily said" lets add a 120 GB HD to the wii with a HD set up and a new media format" what would have got them? a whole bunch of tech gamers who are all about the power, and just want to add another fancy item to their home media -bose driven set up? no, they would lose money that way. Look at how sony is doing right now. they had become so jaded that they thought they're customers will buy ANYTHING they put out at ANYPRICE. Sadly thats not how it works anymore. Personally, I think Sony has become what Nintendo was in the 90's just so jaded and full of themselves that they think they could just roll over ANYBODY. You guys can curse me all you want. But its obvious, isnt it? Its funny with all these techinical stuff that both camps possess, the one that has the least. Is the one that comes out on top. Brings to light the meaning that "Less is more" is kinda true, isnt it?
