Bioshock PC demo config file hints strongly at a PS3 version
A member of the GameTrailers forum has found the best evidence so far that the critically acclaimed Bioshock will be coming to the PS3. While poking around in some of the config files for the demo, an interesting entry was stumbled upon:
[Console]
;; Console (XBox360, PS3) specific settings
;; StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit:
;; If this is a positive number, then instead of using the fixed per-level
;; limits, the StreamingDynamic resource will use as much memory as is
;; available as long as the total memory allocated by the game is less than
;; the specified number. In other words, StreamingDynamic will grow and
;; shrink to fit to the available memory instead of being locked to a fixed
;; budget
StreamingDynamicFloatingLimit=500
The file is locate at C:\Program Files\2K Games\BioShock Demo\Content and is called ConfigINI.IBF for anybody who wants to verify this on their own computers (we've verified it on ours). It will be interesting to see when 2k Games comes out and finally admits that Bioshock is coming to the PlayStation 3. Hopefully it will turn out to be a Q1 2008 release so we don't have to wait that long.

That doesn't confirm anything. It could be the standard code they use in all their games for the next gen.
2k has already made games for both platforms. I don't see this as proof to anything.
doug @ Aug 21st 2007 6:34PM
good cuz this is a game everyone should enjoy
DownwardMonkey @ Aug 21st 2007 6:38PM
That isn't proof at all, that is probably just part of the code they use in everything. That doesn't mean it isn't coming, it's not proof at all that it is. Doesn't really bother me to be honest.
dontlikeitmodit @ Aug 21st 2007 6:39PM
I take that back. It is proof that gaming blog sites will post just about anything for hits.
Andy @ Aug 21st 2007 6:41PM
Normally I wouldn't care because it would be silly port, but they might be able to use Playstation Edge to actually make it look on par.
never$$hort @ Aug 21st 2007 6:44PM
I've heard that this game was coming to the Ps3 eventually too and it was only a timed exclusive for 360... I'm not saying this is proof but I think there is a strong possibility that we could see this game in the future especially if the PS3 continues its positive incline both in sales & games.
Andy @ Aug 21st 2007 6:45PM
"Bioshock PC demo config file confirms a PS3 version"
You might want to change that to something that isn't so confident.
I think this is much more realistic
"Giant pandas attack local man who ate his own hat, Bioshock could be coming to PS3"
Popfrogs @ Aug 21st 2007 6:57PM
I thought it was well known that Bioshock was a timed exclusive. Has something changed, why all the non-ps3-owning doubters?
hoffer @ Aug 21st 2007 7:00PM
Just so you know, the 360 BioShock cover has the "Only on Xbox 360" stamp. They only put that on games that are only going to be on the Xbox. They have used that stamp since the original Xbox. I think maybe the only game that broke that is Ninja Gaiden, but that came to the next generation PS console. So, I guess you can look forward to BioShock on the PS4.

"Giant pandas attack local man who ate his own hat, Bioshock could be coming to PS3"
Gold!
But hey, I guess you gotta find someting to kill time while waiting for a game to come out. Even if it's dreaming about other consoles games.

Yay...I just got accepted to GAP...what does this mean?
PauLo @ Aug 21st 2007 7:08PM
I searched for this and i cant find it but was it on here where i saw that resistance may be going to the 360 when the 2nd comes out on the PS3!?! Just want to check i havent imagined it.
Don @ Aug 21st 2007 7:09PM
Everybody's aware that this is going happen, it's only a matter of time before 2K makes an official announcement. It's funny to hear all the xbox fans flip out over this discovery, and then end their comments with a, "This doens't really bother me though". Yeah it does, stop trying to kid yourself, you wouldn't have been the first to post on this if you weren't bothered by it.
Blaggers @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:58AM
A piece of code from a multi-platform engine doesn't mean anything. Are they really going to go and delete all the mentions of PS3 in the Unreal engine?
DownwardMonkey @ Aug 21st 2007 7:21PM
I hope that wasn't aimed at me Don and it sounds like it was and you're way off base, I'm not bothered if it doesn't come to the PS3 simply because I'm not bothered by the game. I've had enough of FPS games and I'm excited about Ratchet and HS, I'm not sure what someone posting first has to do with anything, I just happen to log on just after the headline was posted. I don't own a 360 I own a PS3.
Sam @ Aug 21st 2007 7:23PM
I own all three consoles.
Fanboy exclusivity battles seriously make me laugh.
In fact they'd make me laugh if i didn't own any of the consoles.
Gamers are idiots these days. Its all about brands and loyalty(aka fanboyism). Its getting stupid.
EternityInBlack @ Aug 21st 2007 7:24PM
Uhh this is a proof that the UNREAL ENGINE runs on both PS3 and 360... this proves nothing.
Sam @ Aug 21st 2007 7:30PM
I just have to comment again... I mean really
Whenever i read a fanboy comment about exclusivity it just sounds like this in my head:
"I AM A HUGE FAN OF THIS PARTICULAR GAME AND EVERYONE SHOULD BUY IT AND PLAY IT COS ITS AWESOME!
...except owners of consoles other than the console i own. They dont deserve to enjoy this game like i do because they're inferior consumers to me and didn't make a wise enough purchase."
Seriously. Get a grip gamers.
Who cares if other consoles get to play your game?
Be happy that more people are buying it, therefore the developer is making more profits and you've got more chance of a sequel.
Seriously. Gamers disgust me sometimes
/facepalm.
TheDragon @ Aug 21st 2007 7:34PM
This doesn't mean anything. Bioshock is on the Unreal engine. It's probably just a config file for the engine, not for Bioshock specifically.
Don @ Aug 21st 2007 7:43PM
My bad Monkey, I appologize. I've been reading this PS3fanboy blog for awhile and the tendency of xbox fanboys is to do just that when ever there is news of the PS3 getting something they don't want it to get. I misunderstood your comment totally. I'm actually in the same boat as you, I'm not as excited as some that this game will come to the PS3, I'm so much more excited about Heavenly Sword, that's more my kind of game. Once again, my bad.
railven @ Aug 21st 2007 7:45PM
@10.Hoffer
Two games that quickly came to mind in breaking that "Only on Xbox" stamp Wreckless and Splinter Cell. There are a few others I'm sure.
Oh well, I bought this game for PC and if it does come out on PS3 oh well, 2K already got my money.
optimusprime @ Aug 21st 2007 7:53PM
@Sam very well said, all this blind fanboyism whether it involves Bioshock or MGS is so retarded. Why can't everyone enjoy these great third party games, and let them choose what platform they want to play it on. Do
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 21st 2007 8:00PM
BS devs are owned by 2k now i wouldnt be suprised. 360 fanboys always say devs want more money when they go multiplatform but why such a sad face now they aint 1st party devs and it aint an established series and the series is aint ending on the Xbox platform just in case your wondering it aint in the same boat as MGS4. Just like Unreal tournament III for the 360 i guess 2k doesnt want bio shock to get in the way of other games since it released so early just destroying the chance of playing anything else for a while. Im sorry but Ace Combat 6 is a timed release also but i dont hear it ringing from the top of every fanboys lungs. Its because MS likes to keep stuff like this quiet till the very last minute, it is quite the opposite for the PS3 as soon as a timed exclusive is anounced no matter if its 6 months from release for the other platform your hear it when its first intially anounced for the PS3. hahaha this is nice for PS3 owners but im getting the PC version.
Jacckstraw @ Aug 21st 2007 8:39PM
I doubt this is something stock that is used on all games. How many demos has 2k put out for the PS3? How hard is it to write a config file?
And hoffer, I'm pretty Bioshock does NOT have the 'only on Xbox 360' tag that you speak of. Here is a link to a Kotaku post that reinforces that:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/only-on'''/bandai-namco-not-aware-of-ps3-eternal-sonata-290491.php
And no pic shows the game with that tag.
Killer @ Aug 21st 2007 9:01PM
This surprising to anyone, how? (if it happens) 2k is alittle starved for some serious cash. (debt through the roof and the delay of GTA4. They're going to port this baby to everything they can. In saying that...wooohooo another 360 port to the ps3. >;> Let's hope 2k can get it right, unlike the rest of them.
Killer @ Aug 21st 2007 9:12PM
@Jacckstraw
Yeah that's really a valid proof. So I'm guessing Shadowrun (microsoft publiched/produced) is going to go to the ps3 too?

Look! NO "Only on Xbox360"! It's on pc. They don't label "Only on Xbox360" if its also on pc.
So it's really still at this point...all hopefully wanting. It might prove to be true. But no one use the sign on the retail box as a legit proof anymore.
a.j. @ Aug 21st 2007 9:14PM
you fanboys are all really shit. the game is great, everyone should play it...fair enough? i have a 360, and i love the game, i also own a PS3 and would love fellow owners to play such a great title. go kill yourselves.

I was going to get the PC version (gotta get a new machine first, my current one is taking it's last breath of life), but if it does come to the PS3 AND it supports keyboard and mouse control, then I'd get it for the PS3 - otherwise, it's the PC version for me, baby! =D

Darkdrium777 @ Aug 21st 2007 9:44PM
Yes, TheDragon is right, and entirely right. .ini files are configuration files used by games on the Unreal Engine (Whichever version) to determine which parameters are set in the game (Graphics, controls, etc). The fact that two letters and a number are mentioned once in the .ini does not confirm that Bioshock will be coming to PS3. It also does not hint strongly to the fact that it's coming out on our system.
Remember, the Unreal Engine 3 will run on the X-Box360, PS3 and PC, and Epic Games, as the developer for the toolkits, has to "normalize" the version of the engine for all platforms, partly due to the fact that Unreal Tournament 3 and the "final" version of the Unreal Engine 3 is coming out on all three.
This article is entirely false, I'm sorry to say but don't get your hopes up. As someone who kept tweaking the .inis on UT2004 and fooling around with the Unreal Editor 3.0 (Not to mix up with the Unreal Engine 3.0), I can assure you that this does not mean anything at all. For example, on the PC you can set, in the editor, parameters for lighting rendering as it would be on X-Box (The first one). Yet, there are NO Unreal Engine 2.5 (UT2004 version) games on the X-Box. The only Unreal Engine games on X-Box as far as I know are Unreal Championship, which uses Unreal Engine 2 (UT2003 version), and Unreal Championship 2, which uses Unreal Engine 2.x.
Bioshock is NOT coming to PS3 just because some line of code in a configuration file for the PC demo mentions our platform. Yes, Bioshock COULD come to PS3, since the UE3.0 can work on our platform, but this doesn't mean ANYTHING AT ALL right now...
Yes it would be great if the game came out on all systems for everyone to enjoy it, but it won't, or not until a very long time (Read: very long). I'll just get this on my PC. I have Warhawk and Heavenly Sword and Lair and Rachet and Clank and Killzone and Little Big Planet and Home to look forward to on PS3.
---Alright, let's hope I didn't make any mistakes...
mccomber @ Aug 21st 2007 9:47PM
The "only on xbox" stamp doesn't mean much unless MS is the publisher. Quick example, Enchanted Arms. Check the 360 box when you have a chance.
Having said that... don't hold your breathe on Bioshock guys. I can understand wanting it on the ps3, but somehow I really doubt that it will happen.
muppetmeth @ Aug 21st 2007 9:52PM
Bioshock on PS3? Schwing! "Only on Xbox 360" is only on there to make Microsoft feel better. I think it should only be applied when the game actually is not on PC as well.
Are all the 360 fanboys lost? I can't help but feel that they are in the wrong place...
Killer @ Aug 21st 2007 9:59PM
@mccomber
Well that is a legit argument, but the ps3 verison came out (Around)8 monthes after the 360 verison. Who know's what ubisoft decided at first? Maybe it was intially a real exclusive, then they decided to port it over later? Do we really know what ubisoft originally planned to do? I'm mean don't get me wrong, I would love to see everyone get bioshock. It's an awesome game. It's just that there is no need to base it off of a no "Only on Xbox360" sign on the box as proof of it coming over to the ps3.
Killer @ Aug 21st 2007 10:03PM
"I think it should only be applied when the game actually is not on PC as well."

Scott Krueger @ Aug 22nd 2007 12:44AM
Chimp...
Dat don't mean a thing...
Right Now it is only on XBox and PC. So that is true.
But it still doesn't mean it isn't coming to the PS3.
It probably is. 2K is the Share the Love type company.
I played the Demo on my 360 and It was not the Type of game for me. I love the Weapons, but I thought there was to much Shine on ALL surfaces (oohhh shiny carpet) and I was not too impressed with the Graphics. I'll hold out for Halo3 and my copy of Warhawk next week.
Debikul @ Aug 22nd 2007 1:09AM
Well, you guys can debate over if it is or it isn't.
As for me?
I'm playing the game on my 360. And if by chance it does come out on the PS3 it will more than likely be sometime in 2008. And by then BioShock for the 360 will be cheaper than the PS3 version (even a used copy is even cheaper) and will have consumers wondering: "Why do I want to pay $60 for this game when I can get it for $40 or $30 for a 360?"
Timed exclusives are very sinister my friends. Very much so.
Don @ Aug 22nd 2007 2:39AM
Debikul, what kind of sense are you trying to make? If it comes out for the ps3 in 2008, the people who own a 'PS3 only' will be buying it on the PS3 even if the game is selling for $30 used on the 360.(it won't be selling for $30 by the way) For the people who haven't decided on which system to buy yet when it comes out in 2008, I don't think people will be saying,"Well let me get a 360 because I can get BioShock cheaper." Instead they'll be saying, "Let me get the PS3 because Metal Gear Solid 4 plus I can play that one game, what's it called....oh yeah, Bioshock or something."
IMO if BioShock comes out for the PS3 in 2008, it will be a speck of a game compared to the likes of MGS4 and GT5. Your idea of BioShock being a system decider in 2008 is far-fetched to say the least.
BlackBeltJones @ Aug 22nd 2007 3:45AM
Strongly doubt it, 2k specifically put "Only for xbox 360 and Windows" on their cover art, if they were considering porting it they could have easily decided to leave it off. The rumors were wrong with Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Gears of War, all of which have the "only on Xbox 360" tags on them. In a couple of days Ken Levine will come out and squash the rumors.
Debikul @ Aug 22nd 2007 3:54AM
Don,
My bad. I didn't mean to get you worked up over a little game like BioShock. I was just making a point that games usually see a small price drop or coupon discounts around the six month age. By six months you can usually pick up the game even cheaper for a console that is cheaper than the PS3 and has more available games at cheaper prices than newly released titles on the PS3 that came out on the 360 half a year before it. (And I'm not comparing the PS1 and PS2 library and the whole BC issue, I'm talking games made for the current "next-gen" consoles)
And my biggest annoyance is the contradiction in your own post:
"Your idea of BioShock being a system decider in 2008 is far-fetched to say the least."
You blast at the notion that BioShock would move units but at the same time say this:
"Let me get the PS3 because Metal Gear Solid 4..."
and:
"IMO if BioShock comes out for the PS3 in 2008, it will be a speck of a game compared to the likes of MGS4 and GT5."
Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black eh?

Oh look the s*$t dribbler is back again :P
Don @ Aug 22nd 2007 6:23AM
Debikul,
If you would have read a little more carefully, you would have noticed that I said "system decider in 2008" which is what you were trying to imply in your original non-sense. In no way did I contradict myself. Did I say that BioShock would not move 360's, I don't think so. As a matter of fact, I'm sure it is helping move systems NOW, and NOW being the key word. But in your original post you made it sound like the cheaper version of BioShock on the 360 would affect people's decisions on whether to buy a 360 or a PS3 in 2008. My disagreement was with that, IMO BioShock will not be a system decider in that time frame, it will be games like MGS4 and GT5. With games like MGS4 coming out in 2008, do you honestly think that people who are hung up on whether to get a 360 or a PS3 will be making their decision based on which copy of BioShock is cheaper? Lol!
Plus that game library of the 360's won't matter much next year because most of the games that people will want to play are the games coming out now and not the ones that came out in the early stages of the 360. It makes me laugh when 360 owners throw that at PS3 owners, "Well, the 360 is the better system because it has more games." No Shit, it came out a year before, I hope it has more games. Maybe it's just me, but with the games I'm playing now on my PS3, I could care less about playing titles that came out on the first wave of 360 games. With the games that are coming out for the PS3 within the next couple of months, that 360's past library is going to seem rather bleak.

I've been playing Bioshock on my 360 and it's so good that it infiltrates your dreams. I don't understand the excitement that it may be coming to the PS3 months, even a year from now.
GRAW 2 was great, like six months ago when I played to death on the 360. As a multi-platform gaming household, the Playstation 3 is going to need more exclusives or at least timed exclusives to get folks interested. Frankly, there's not much on the immediate horizon that I am excited about.
The reality is that despite greater platform potential, the multi-platform ports have been consistently mediocre -- lower frame rates, muddier textures, missing features. Feeding on 360 scraps ported to the PS3 to make a few extra $$$ shouldn't get fanboys so excited.
If you want to play Bioshock on your PS3 today, simply purchase Microsoft's $349 expansion module for the PS3. It's got HDMI, so you can plug it right into your setup.
TheSh0wstopper @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:56AM
I was reading a few comments and wanted to make a few notes:
1) Bioshock DOES have the Only for Xbox sticker. I have the game and noticed it.
2) As for the line of code that refers to the PS3, maybe yall dont remember but BIOSHOCK WAS NOT ALWAYS 360 EXCLUSIVE!!! It changed to 360 exclusive while in development. Could it be that they just didnt change the code that was already written?
3)Colin, I have lost a lot of respect for you as a journalist to write such a "loaded" headline.
4) There is nobody on this site that honestly believes this is coming to the PS3. They might support the notion to piss of 360 fanboys or to lie to themselves in an attempt to feel better and hide the frustration of "MISSING OUT ON ANOTHER GREAT AAA TITLE", butthey dont honestly believe it.

Do you know that feeling you get when you see somebody doing something completely foolish, almost like you're embarrassed for them, well that's how I feel everytime I read one of your comments and you sign your User name.
@Wii360somethingOrOther,
What do you mean the PS3 has to get some exclusives and timed exclusives? MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, and Tekken 6, what are they? As far as timed exclusives, UT3 and Haze, with others sure to follow. Burnout Paradise will have exclusive content on the PS3 not to mention all of Sony's first and second party exclusives. Then you got companies like Rockstar wanting to make games exclusively for the PS3 to exploit the power of the hardware, and do things they won't be able to do on the 360. I think Sony has exclusives covered.
Even with the SLIGHT chance that BioShock doesn't come to the PS3, would it really be that big of a deal? Each system will have it's own great exclusives, and if BioShock stays one of MicroSoft's, so be it. I, owning a PS3, won't be fazed a bit because I'll be playing Heavenly Sword and MGS4 in the near future.
