New footage of Gran Turismo 5's cockpit view
Slowly but surely, interesting morsels of information are streaming out of Leipzig. Here, Jeux-France managed to capture some new video of Gran Turismo 5. Over four minutes of glorious real-time gameplay to feast on. We could say things like "that looks great!" But, we think you're more than capable of making that judgment yourself.

Beautiful.
Dahk @ Aug 22nd 2007 3:29PM
Gorgeous.
That hand-over-hand action is sick.
The back view is even more sick! Dirrrrrrttyyyy.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Aug 22nd 2007 3:57PM
This is on3 of the original tracks. Man oh man what a difference. Finally, an in-car view that you can actually play the game in. I love when you switch to rear-view that you can see the interior of the car.
Why is it that these driving game videos seem to have a terrible driver. Does'nt he know this track by now? And in GT you need to break before a turn?
Andy @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:06PM
@Zaphod Beeblebrox
That driver does suck, but I was more focused on how nice it looks.
Just a quick question for PS3 games.
Are all the games in 16:9 format?
If I have a 4:3 tv do they squish the image of chop off the sides?
Water @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:15PM
@3 one of the original tracks? Its Suzuka!
Livi70590 @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:15PM
@4. who are you kidding? It's forza that's supposed to compete with GT. PGR is an arcade racer. They're different genres. And what you're doing is like comparing God of War and Pokémon.
Bangbang... @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:15PM
cherdman:
why did you have to go there? Its cool to see the devs taking what was good from pgr3 and putting it into other games(dirt and GT5) and the back view definatly takes the in car view to the next level. All in all I have to say that im impressed. The backgrounds dont look prerendered anymore and the frame rate seems solid.
Bangbang... @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:20PM
Livi70590:
Compared to Forza 2, GT is an arcade racer.
Zaphod Beeblebrox @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:25PM
@Andy. I don't know. I think that you would have the option for 4/3 just like you do in the GTHD demo.
derrickgott007 @ Aug 22nd 2007 4:59PM
Why do we have to have 5 seconds of their stupid french site name?? Come on, not everyone has blazing fast internet...Just get on with the damn clip!
Dragonmage @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:52PM
@ Are you high? Forza 2 is a great sim and all but, gt5 is a vastly superior game that just nuked it.
Livi70590 @ Aug 22nd 2007 5:29PM
@8 I've played Forza, and it's not even as good as Sega GT.
kdizzle @ Aug 22nd 2007 6:46PM
Is there another link to this video? It's streaming really slow. Probably DIGG's fault.
Darkdrium777 @ Aug 22nd 2007 6:37PM
Just as I thought, the mirrors are there for decoration only. You can't actually see what's behind you in them.
And obviously this was a playable demo, not a official drive. That's why the driver sucked, it's his first time playing the game.
gooftroop @ Aug 22nd 2007 8:13PM
bangbang must be a troll...
"Compared to Forza 2, GT is an arcade racer."
Forza 2 is poor in comparison to any of the GT series and is far more arcade like than GT
qwerter @ Aug 22nd 2007 9:25PM
damge??? =( idk why but im startin to like damage now like in motorstorm and DiRT, but no worries GT is perfect
Luigi @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:04PM
What about the gear shifting?
John @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:40PM
Andy, here's my experience with ps3 16:9 output vs. 3:4.
It actually depends on your cables. If you use COMPONENT (red, green, blue), the output will be 16:9. So on a 3:4 tv, this makes everything look elongated vertically-- nothing is chopped off, but it's squeezed in, to fit (ugly-- especially for racing games). If you have a COMPOSITE cable hookup (the single video out the ps3 comes with), then it will output 3:4 to a 3:4 tv. The drawback is it's composite, but then most 3:4 tv's are standard def, anyway.

gorgeous
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Aug 22nd 2007 10:51PM
could they pick a more boring track. atleast the mirror reflections arent lego blocks like last time, it follows the track i think but doesnt show the cars.
MattZani @ Aug 23rd 2007 10:27AM
This looks great, hopefully UK will have RHD cars.
PS3 can display 4:3 or 16:9 no matter what connection it uses. and in 4:3 you get less of a view, but nothing is 'squished'
RROD @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:57AM
Forza who?
user @ Aug 23rd 2007 2:17PM
The driver's what I call a 'corner winner', he reaches the first place but only on corners when everybody's braking and for a very short time, before he crashes onto the rails :D I like how he uses the 'bounce cornering technique' too.

"Forza 2 is poor in comparison to any of the GT series and is far more arcade like than GT"
Your right, the bumper car physics, rubber band ai, and minimal terrain simulation makes the Grand Turismo series the pinnacle of sim racing.
Seriously,Grand Turismo has always paid an amazing amount of attention to the cars, to ensure that the car in the game is the most accurate reflection of the actual car possible. Every thing from the sound of the engine to the stock tires is represented in the game.
But when it comes to accurate physics simulations and the effect it has on cars Forza is king.

"Are you high? Forza 2 is a great sim and all but, gt5 is a vastly superior game that just nuked it."
Call me when GT5 is running its physics at 360fps with the level of detail that Forza 2s physics engine has.
John @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:36PM
um... Bangbang? It doesn't MATTER if you're running 'physics' at 360fps when the 'physics' are FAKE.
Play Forza2, and run a car into a wall at 60 mph.
Now, watch demos of cars running into walls at 40 mph.
Can you kinda maybe see that the 'physics' engine (I have to constantly put it in quotes, 'cause it's so fake) in Forza2 is just a...
Joke?
Yeah, it's a joke. It's not real.
And what are physics, if they don't reflect reality?
John @ Aug 23rd 2007 11:41PM
@Bangbang, I can't BELIEVE that you actually posted the very video which shows how fake Forza2 is! And that's your argument!
Dude. You seriously need to watch some crash-test dummies.
Here, I'll help you:
Okay, bye now.
This is why Polyphony Digital is trying to figure out how to implement realistic crashing while not robbing too much processor power.
Oh, and this is why your Forza2 demo is so fake.
35mph. Honda Accord, one of the safest cars on the road. And yet in Microsoft's demo, he crashes an Acura (less safe than Accord) INTO A WALL at a much greater speed and he gets some bumper damage and some transmission and suspension damage.
The car would have been totalled.
You can take your phake physics and shove them up your leader's darkside, you've been deluded, my friend.
Read a book.

John:
If you would play games before you form opinions about them, you would know that YOU CAN total your car fairly easily in Forza 2. In the demo, the guy driving the car slides sideways into a TIRE WALL. Hitting a tire wall in real life usually ends the race for you, but not because your car is totaled. It ends the race because you fall so far behind and loose so many points that the race is not worth finishing.
for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn30iO7QOCE
However, It should be noted that the physics engine and damage modeling are completely different things. The physics engine simulates how things like friction temp., g-forces, drag, lift, traction, etc. affect the vehicle. This simulation is based on physics calculations. Damage modeling is a reflection of damage taken by the car based on collision detection, not physics calculations. While Forza isnt the best at damage modeling (Dirt is), it is the best at physics simulations and how they effet the vehicle.
But I see what your trying to do. You want to make this into a MS vs. Sony thing, well it's not. Its a game vs. game thing and Forza wins.
