PS3 sales have doubled since the price cut - GameStop
During a conference call detailing their second quarter earnings, GameStop executives confirmed that PS3 sales have increased by two-fold since the price cut. Not only that, they mentioned that the PS3's increased sell-through rate has held steady in the weeks since the price cut and that they expect the sales to continue doing well with the release of high-profile PS3 games coming out soon.Hopefully those 60GB PS3s won't run out anytime soon, because consumers sure seem to dig that $499 price point. Even with games like Warhawk and Heavenly Sword coming out, it's not hard to see the PS3's sales go south again if the price jumped back up to $599.
So have you picked up a PS3 since the price cut?

Not surprising at all. All those sales with no new games! Once there are more than 2 worthwhile games the system will really take off.
calibar7 @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:06PM
Picked one up the day after the price cut and haven't looked back.
Christian @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:13PM
Going to pick one up this weekend. Had one at home during the summer, dad has one, but not one back at college yet. I was waiting to see if there were any big announcements (hardware wise) at Leipzig that would warrant me waiting on picking one up (like a new SKU or new bundle) but it does not look like that will be the case.
gamingeek @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:14PM
Nope-- I am an early adopter (bought it back in January). We are the red headed stepchildren of the PS3 that paid $100 more than everyone else for a great system with no worthwhile software.
Shinogu @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:15PM
Nabbed one at the beginning of August. Loving the movies and music playback and so forth. And of course, GAMES!

I bought one right after the price cut. Hooked on Super Stardust HD, just ordered Resistance. Really looking forward to the fall/winter.
Drekken @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:18PM
I bought one the first week the price dropped. Glad I did.
Railven @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:25PM
I need to know something:
I know early models of the 60GB didn't get the PS2 hardware removed, and I know the 80GBs did.
So are all current 60GBs bringing the PS2 hardware?
My friend is on the fence and he wants the 80GB with the games but if the 60GB bring the PS2 hardware I think that will persuade him as he has ton of PS2 games he often plays.
wei @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:25PM
on a not-so-related note. IGN UK's review of Heavenly Sword was underwhelming. Looks like they did well with presentation and production values, but the gameplay is subpar. That's really a shame, because this was going to be my first PS3 game.. I guess I'll have to wait until.. uh.. what?.. something else comes out.. i don't know what it'll be now.. :T
Elliott @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:26PM
I took the plunge when the price cut was announced.
I finally converted my HDTV savings fund into a new 52" LCD the week before the price cut and couldn't stand that I spent that much dough and wasn't able to watch anything in 1080p. When I heard about the price cut it was like a sign that it was meant to be.
EDGE @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:27PM
It will still run PS2 games, it just uses software emulation instead of the Emotion Engine chip ( hardware ).
EDGE @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:29PM
@9
Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk to name a few ?
Silver R. Wolfe @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:31PM
I still don't believe that $599 will be the price of the 80GB unit. It's just the price of the 80GB/Motorstorm bundle. I keep saying, but the box says Limited Edition so I'm gonna keep assuming it's actually a limited edition.
wei @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:34PM
@12
yeah.. i'm really hoping warhawk turns out to be a good game.. but i have my doubts about it..
and those other games don't come out for a few more months.. though, they look great.
just too much waiting..
in terms of multi-platform games, i've tended to buy the 360 versions just because they're usually developed primarily on 360 and i prefer the 360 controller and rumble support..
i'm really really hoping the PS3 will catch up.. this is by no means meant to knock on the PS3, as i am an owner, as well.. it's just a weird feeling to own a console with no games..
but at least i have bioshock to keep me busy these days.. seriously, it'd be a great thing for ps3 owners if the game made it to ps3.. it really is one of the most engaging and immersive games i've ever played
h0mi @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:36PM
I bought my 60gb ps3 on July 20th, and "rebought" it a week later because Fry's had a bundle with 2 free movies.
James @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:36PM
lmao, Ratchet and Clank as a system seller????????
Hirsbrunner @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:46PM
@ James
You can lyao all you want, but Ratchet & Clank would be the ONLY reason I, and many others, would even consider purchasing a PS3.
Now, drop that price $200 dollars more, and I'm sold.
DownwardMonkey @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:53PM
Laugh all you want James, but R&C is the reason I own a PS3.
calibar7 @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:58PM
How are you guys feeling about Dynasty Warriors: Gundam? What kind of score do you think it will get from the reviewers?
Dan @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:04PM
I bought one after the price cut because I know they're not going to drop the price again (or probably have any worthwhile bundles) until at least early '08. There are now starting to be some games that I'm really looking forward to... Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Folklore, etc. and I know there will only be more coming. And don't forget the 5 free (mostly crappy) Blu-Ray movies promotion - http://bluraysavings.com/
gerg @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:06PM
Got one two weekends ago, and couldn't be happier with my purchase. Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Lair all on the way. I'll also pick up Oblivion's GOTY edition. Looks to be a great fall lineup.
optimusprime @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:13PM

Just because ING UK states the game is underwhelming does not necessarily make it so. It's just the opinion of 1 person playing the game. I'd wait for all the reviews to make a final judgment on the game.
Popfrogs @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:14PM
@19:
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam has a demo on the store. And from my personal experience...it blows goats. I'd give it a 5 out of 10, it's boring as hell.
OTAM @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:15PM
I bought one after the pricecut. I'm having buyers remorse with it though :(
I mean,I went through Resistance,it was pretty cool. Now,there's nothing else for me to play on it so it just sits there...
nihillasohen @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:22PM
I got mine on launch but i'm thinking that a second PS3 would be pretty sweet.
Larry Bilyeu @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:30PM
For those out there that worry about the new 80 gig not having the ps2 hardware, Don't. Because that hardware has been disabled even in the 60 gigs through firmware updates. That's why it can now upscale ps1 and ps2 games. It's all software.
James @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:33PM
@calibar7 - I thought the demo was fun. I bet it's a solid 6-7 though. Depends on multiplayer.
calibar7 @ Aug 23rd 2007 5:47PM
@23 & 27
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam - I played the demo and while it was kind of mindless it was still somewhat enjoyable. While it certainly isn't an AAA title it seems like a solid 8 and something I have been contemplating picking up - especially since I was really looking forward to Lair and Heavenly Sword but it seems like the buzz isn't as positive as I was hoping it would be for those two titles.
Cagalli @ Aug 23rd 2007 6:01PM
Side note, only one outlet has rated Heavenly Sword a 7. Others are giving it 8s and 9s.
Shuichi @ Aug 23rd 2007 6:11PM
Picked up one a few days after the price drop. Haven't bought any blu-ray yet. But i enjoy Sigma and Enchanted Arms unitl more exciting games come out. FFXIII!!!
Livi70590 @ Aug 23rd 2007 6:18PM
Sales haven't increased cos of the price cut, it's because i bought one. Everyone wants to gub me at resistance. (Nothing to do with the price cut announcement being the day after i bought my Playstation 3).
zenprism @ Aug 23rd 2007 6:22PM
Yes, I bought one a few days after the price cut. I've been really happy with the system, even though I only own Motorstorm at the moment (love that game...), but I'll be picking up Warhawk next week.
I was firmly in the anti-PS3 camp last year, but as Sony seems to finally be getting its act together with titles like Littlebig Planet and Uncharted, I've "Jumped In."
:)
YoYo @ Aug 23rd 2007 6:54PM
Got mine a few weeks after the price drop. I feel pretty good about the purchase and the quality of the hardware I also have a 360, but my 360 DVD drive is about toast and it has scratched some my games.
secret @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:12PM
People who own a 360 will suddenly feel a need for PS3 and bluray. PS3 owners could care less about anything the 360 offers...!!!! KABAAMMM...!!!! Yowers...!!!!
bilbravo @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:30PM
I picked one up last weekend, I got the last 60GB at Target (before the price drop, there were always 2-3 when I checked on Wii stock). I had planned to get one a few days earlier but had to wait for a new shipment... guess they are doing well around here.
Tim Buchheim @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:32PM
I bought one a few days ago. I wanted to make sure I have one with an Emotion Engine (because I have so many PS2 games which I'm still playing) and I figured the price is not likely to drop again until long after the EE-equipped models are long gone.
I haven't bought any PS3 games yet (I'm still playing Persona 3) but I'll probably get the GotY edition of Oblivion, and I might buy the Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (but I haven't made up my mind about that.. I have the PS1 version, which still works fine.) And at some point I'll get the Ratchet & Clank game, but probably not right away.
will @ Aug 23rd 2007 7:43PM
i bought a 60GB ps3 at the dropped price. shame was that it had a faulty power supply that had a high pitched whine to it. then i swapped it for ANOTHER 60gb ps3 with a faulty power supply. they were both CE133203XXX so i guess that explains it.
i ended up getting an 80gb, which is nice, cause i love motorstorm.
John @ Aug 23rd 2007 8:53PM
Gosh, James. You must've never played one. And yes, it will be a system-seller. I know someone who bought ps3 just for Ratchet and Clank.
What do you think the Wii people are gonna do when they see the colorful, smooth, HD graphics of Ratchet and Clank?
What do you think parents are gonna do? Especially those with brand-new HDTV's?
If Sony puts Ratchet and Clank on a demo kiosk, they can just call Pachter and say, "Turn it up again, P!"
John @ Aug 23rd 2007 9:00PM
Larry Bilyeu (wow, did you like, put your whole real name on there? cool), I hear what you're saying, but it's not the general consensus, I would like to see a source supporting this information.
The upscaling only deals with final output-- so in an Original PS3 (cool! You got a ps3! Hey! Is that original? Yeah. Wow, that thing is Cherry.), for ps2 games that output is coming from the emotion engine. For a newer ps3 with all-software emulation, that output is coming from the emulation engine (I just made that up-- pretty cool, huh?).
So in older (original) ps3's, you can play almost all ps2 games and upscale them.
And in newer ps3's (all-software emulation) you can play less ps2 games, and upscale them.
An important thing to remember is that the software emulation is constantly being improved, so eventually we will see a similar rate of compatibility (it's already very high for software emulation)-- and if there is still some game that you can't play through emulation, post it in a comment on here. Sony has been reading this stuff.
Featherhammer @ Aug 24th 2007 10:56AM
I sold my wii and bought the PS3 a week after the drop (AD). I feel like I went from pre-school to grad school in the transition.
TxdoHawk @ Aug 24th 2007 7:12PM
Yeah, I used my employee discount to score a refurb 60-gig for $405, tax included. Only because I wanted hardware BC, though. At the moment my PS3 is helping me get through MGS3, otherwise it has sat around neglected. I ought to grab Super Rub-A-Dub finally, that was enjoyable.
Daniel @ Aug 25th 2007 9:59PM
I bought mine 1 week after the price cut. And I'm very happy with my system. Hopefully the Reviews from PSM on Lair and Warhawk wont push any PS3 wanting people away. Oh and did you see the 7.0 IGN UK gave Heavenly Sword.
