Analysts expect $499 price for 80GB PS3 over holidays
We can't say we didn't expect it, let alone haven't heard it before and probably had some report on it a while back. Once again, those number-Other sales boosts, the two say, could come in the form of more software bundles and Jesse Divnich is "confident that through the coming months, Sony will make the correct decisions to prevent the gap between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 to widen." Pachter chimes in also with the idea that in early 2008, Sony may be prepared to cut the price of their console again. We don't think we'll see another $100 price drop, but if one does happen, we bet it'd be about $50. That's our analysis, what's yours?

I'm still one for the 60gb with Emotion Chip, and a $98 320gb external HDD (Target has them).
Unless the 80gb does something our current 60gb doesn't.

It does software emulation. If you plan on playing alot of PS2 games on your PS3 than the PS 60GB is a safer bet.

i've got a launch ps3 w/ an internal 160GB hdd bought from newegg.com...i'm fine with mine.

been saying this since the 80GB rumor started ... any upgrade in HD is not really an upgrade from a manufacturing standpoint, its just a replacement for the standard. as the cost of storage goes down a new sku will emerge. the non EE version will eventually rival the 60GB version .. just a matter of months for that to occur form what i can tell with todays update.

If they just drop the price on these things, more people would buy it. Lame strategy.
Blade @ Sep 4th 2007 3:11PM
They are dropping the price but you have to understand that HD prices drop and it starts to cost more to get 60GB HD's than it does the 80GB HD's. I wouldn't be surprised to see 80GB SKU at $449.99 for Christmas followed by a $50 price reduction in March with introduction of a 100GB SKU at $499.99 w/ Maybe Ratchet and extra controller until the 80GB SKU is sold out. By the end of the 7~8 year life span 160+GB HD's will probably be the standard SKU. Theres just no reason not to with the continued drops in costs.
But without the higher price on the SKU obviously people would buy it over the 60GB version if they were the same price. Therefore the 60GB version would never finish selling out.
Just give it time people. The price will probably be very near to the 360 by Christmas of next year if not cheaper. Sony does most of its manufacturing in house and most of the technology found in the PS3 is used in other applications meaning higher amounts of development and faster cost reduction.

No sense is ever buying a higher end PS3 if this is Sony's strategy
J_Swayze @ Sep 4th 2007 5:37PM
Hmm I still have 33GB's on my launch PS3
Does anyone know a good site I can find a 250GB HD lower than $200

Sony Style is out of the 60 GB version. I would have bought a 60GB had I known they would run out so soon. No way I'll touch an 80GB version until the price is also $500
Kyle A. Miller @ Sep 4th 2007 6:06PM
Drop the game in the 80GB, and I see nothing stopping Sony from dropping the PS3 another $100. The cost to include the increased HD size is negligible. The exclusion of the PS2 chips had to reduce costs a little. And in theory, the PS3 should run a little cooler without them since there's less hardware to power. Less watts burned equals less heat. A well written software emulator coupled with the Cell should have no problem obtaining compatibility equal to the PS2 chips.

In other words: f--- you if you bought the 60GB PS3 for $499.

Eh poop on price drops. Get the sonystyle credit card then order the 60 GB one. 500 (ps3) - 150 (free credit towards purchases over 300 bucks) + 30 (taxes) = 380 + 5 free Blu Ray movies (most are ok, 5th category licks balls) You wont get a deal that good for a long time. Thats what it took to get me to finally buy a PS3... lol Not because I couldn't afford it, because at 380 I couldn't care less
YouFaceTheTick @ Sep 5th 2007 11:05AM
Last night I noticed sony style had the 60GB box. I got the sony rewards card - $150 off, 0% for 12 months - and snatched up a PS3. Can't wait for it to arrive!
