Firmware update 1.92 released [Update]
The latest firmware update is now available and, sadly, everyone hoping for the legendary 2.00 release is going to be disappointed. 1.92 hit sometime late last night and adds a nice selection of new features/fixes, even though an official release list has yet to be revealed. We're hoping to see a post on the PlayStation.Blog regarding what exactly is new at some point today. We would quite like to know where exactly 1.91 went too, but that's really neither here nor there.
[Update: Patrick Seybold clarifies: "This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles."]

1st! woot.
not that great of an update. but whatever.
kalsey @ Sep 4th 2007 6:21AM
I'd be wary of this update. I just did it and now my internet browser isn't working and I can't access the PS store...but I can log into PSN fine. A lot of others on forums and people I know are having varying issues after the update too. Although others' are working fine...
Just wait until Sony announce a fix or release another update.
kalsey @ Sep 4th 2007 6:36AM
Regards to my other post #3...
There is a fix. Go to your internet browser > Press triangle > go to tools > delete cache. I just tried this and it fixes the problem perfectly.
Egster @ Sep 4th 2007 6:49AM
These numbers like 1.91 and 1.92 are just numbers of the builds. It doesn't necessarily mean that the public gets to see every internal build. When lot of features get added there usually is a bigger jump than small ones like these.
ssway @ Sep 4th 2007 7:09AM
What they need:
- Xvid/Divx support.
- Keyboard+mouse support for all future FPS (not firmware related).
- Shoutcast support
- Video editing suite for use with DV cameras. Make use of the Cell and SPE's already!
- Skype: forget a Sony walled garden client we want open communication! Heck, I'd buy another PS3 for my family back home also.
Brian Spence @ Sep 4th 2007 7:11AM
I heard from another message board that there will be improved sixaxis controls that work better with Lair. Not that I've had any problems controlling Lair, which is one of the best games I've ever played. Do not button mash, be smart about how you control your dragon, and it'll be smooth and insanely fun. The graphics and story are amazing.
railven @ Sep 4th 2007 7:19AM
@Brian Spence
Which model PS3 you have and when did you buy it?
I'm curious if you got a newer SixAxis or one of the launch units. Just curious as it would either add weight to something I noticed or disappear it.
jarnsater @ Sep 4th 2007 7:23AM
The official note is up (link below), but doesn't say much. Basically just backwards comp. stuff for US PS3's (those with the emulation chip).

To #7 -
No amount of firmware updates can fix Lair, unless the firmware update came with A NEW GAME.
Man, I really wish they would work on letting us send/answer messages while in games. I also have a 360, so the lack of that feature is hard to swallow.
SlyTheBoss @ Sep 4th 2007 7:23AM
I'm glad they finally got the controllers to auto shutoff...
phattie @ Sep 4th 2007 7:27AM
Flash backgrounds? Maybe this has to do with the locoroco interactive screensaver... set it as your background and interact with it using the motion controlls (you can still use the normal controls for navigation).
andyakadum @ Sep 4th 2007 7:49AM
I think the PS3's hyper visor has been updated.
Before: CPU's were listed as running at 1.6ghz
After: CPU's now listed as running at 3.192ghz
andyakadum @ Sep 4th 2007 7:50AM
For you n00bs: The hyper-visor is the "virtual machine" linux is run in.
ElLobo @ Sep 4th 2007 8:01AM
WTH! (that's heck, not the hockey sticks 'H' word)
I just updated, couldn't get onto my browser or PSN store, reset my router, managed to get online for Resistance and Folding, but still can't access the browser or store.
The store was giving me problems yesterday, too. What da dealio?

Really happy to hear about auto-shutoff controllers. Hate it when I leave my PS3 folding and it kills my controller. Now that you can set folding to auto-start after a while and controllers to auto-shut off, I can just turn off my TV and let the software take care of itself, and that's as it should be.
GRANTED @ Sep 4th 2007 9:56AM
as long as warhawk still works im happy
Andy @ Sep 4th 2007 10:23AM
What file format are flash backrounds in?
OrganicShadow @ Sep 4th 2007 10:26AM
Ummm....
-My controllers have always auto shut off after a while of not using. Normally during a movie or if I pause a game and am fighting with my girlfriend. No, they were not out of juice either, as I turned them backed on and checked to see full bars.
-What the hell is a flash wallpaper? Are they talking about stuff similar to the default background? If so then cool, but at the same time that would mean that the user-created ones would probably look crappy compared to a Sony made wall.
dchindian @ Sep 4th 2007 10:49AM
Where can I find and download cool flash media backgrounds for my PS3?
Popfrogs @ Sep 4th 2007 11:01AM
#22: Yeah this has been mentioned before. Lair is one of the few (if not the only) PS3 game that you can play on the PSP via remote play. Supposedly it's more fun since the controls are better.
Tru-blue @ Sep 4th 2007 11:28AM
Anybody know what exactly was improved for the web browser? Sony needs to add more Flash support to their web browser. Gametrailers still isn't fully functional in their browser.
Sometimes, while inbetween games or messaging a buddy, I want to check something out on the net without getting up to go my computer. But it's a bummer when the PS3's browser isn't compatible with many sites.
@21. I'm not sure about newer releases of the SixaxiS, but I have one of the initial launch release units and none of my controls ever shut off automatically after a certain time frame.
Neil @ Sep 4th 2007 11:37AM
Can't knock Sony this time....sounds like they did a good firmware update. The auto shut off controllers is the best part of this update....I'll be trying it as I get home.
Andy @ Sep 4th 2007 11:39AM
I have found the web browser to be much faster, as for backrounds I have found some but I cannot get them onto my PS3.
Popfrogs @ Sep 4th 2007 11:48AM
26: Me too, I've been waiting for the controller auto-shutoff for a long time. I leave my PS3 on 24/7 and my controllers die daily.

Controllers auto-power off after inactivity .....SWEEET
Blackcanary @ Sep 4th 2007 11:55AM
This seems like a really cool update just waiting for home to come out now to. I've also written a letter to Sony about the way the look and treat us UK gamers I've posted it up on my Profile on Hi5 read it and leave a comment and tell me what you think. The web site address is : http://europeps3.hi5.com

Blackcanary and Sokold are borth me i forgot i already joined this site lol. after downloading the new update folding Home doesn't seem to work.
insane257 @ Sep 4th 2007 12:00PM
To those who think the update isn't great, you're idiots.
You're not gonna believe this but i sent Sony a message last night via their blog and the next day they've released this update giving me exactly what i wanted. I asked for further PS2 games to be compatable with the PS3 cos i bought manhunt and it wouldn't work with my PS3. I'm updating now. if it works i'll be back to being a Sony fanboy. Brilliant news.
Thanks Sony!!!
If it doesn't let me play Manhunt i'll go mad though...
insane257 @ Sep 4th 2007 1:47PM
what a surprise. Manhunt & True Crime 2 dont work.
Come on Sony, update it properly will you???
JerJerBinks @ Sep 4th 2007 1:49PM
@30 I read your letter, and my only comment is ... would you like some relish on your frankfurter?
Back to the topic at hand. I am usually pretty "meh" about most of the updates that come to the PS3, but auto-shutoff for the controllers is certainly the best addition to date. I have been cursing Sony every time I manually turn the controllers off when I am done playing. Thanks to Sony for finally getting something right.
HektikLyfe @ Sep 4th 2007 2:01PM
I thought battery life was supposed to be one of the big reasons why the Sixaxis had no rumble...my battery dies quickly and occasionally loses contact with the PS3. My cars or characters move in some strange direction for a few seconds once in a while.
Since the last update a lot of the audio on some of the videos I have downloaded was screwed up. It sounds like the recording volume was super high. I deleted and redownloaded them but they still play the same. I plugged it in to the T.V. or another audio input source and I still get the same result. ONLY on some videos.
Weird. The Folklore video for one has that problem. And the Harry Potter trailer.
Is this just me?

# Controllers auto-power off after inactivity
This is great, the first time I let Folding@Home on for a night, the next day my controllers were dead. Now I turn them off explicitly after use (instead of turning off the system :)).
The other fixes sound good too. If we’re going to keep getting these kinds of updates regularly I’m happy.

Oh and insane257...I think you just showed everyone why they should think before they speak. ;)

Ive been waiting for this for a while. I was trying to figure out why it didn't do that, it was somewhat annoying.

I have Manhunt and it works on my PS3, with the EE though. Not sure if you have the PS3 without the EE chip.

my PS3 is the UK PS3 which doesn't have the Emotion Engine in..which is a pain. If Sony dont sort this on 2.0 i'll probably go crazy. I really wanna play & complete Manhunt before Manhunt 2 hits the shelves.

#39 & #40:
The legendary 2.0 update is rumored to have all the fixes people have been wanting forever. It is/was supposed to include in-game XMB access and messaging, custom soundtrack support for any game, scaling, etc. We've gotten maybe one of the 10 features 2.0 promised/promises. Rumors can breed disappointment.
stirlo @ Sep 4th 2007 10:04PM
@Blackcanary - read your letter, agree with you (i live in Aussie-land, and we get the same shafting here.) anyway, small typo, do you mean to say
"20GB PS3 not being relished" or Released?
if you can change quickly it will look a lot better!
frankenwookie @ Sep 4th 2007 11:20PM
I have posted on here commenting on my disgust with LAIR, i happy to say that the Firmware helped immensely. It is still not perfect by any means, but it is not quite the disaster we initially thought. Please give it another shot and those that have not tried, should at least rent.
kali @ Sep 5th 2007 12:52AM
I think the new update might have had something to do with Lair, the control seems better. Maybe it is me because lair is much more exciting than before.
