PS3 Fanboy review: Warhawk

Though a lot of people took this announcement as a portent of doom for Warhawk (dropping half your game so late in development is never a good sign), a highly successful beta during the summer was able to garner a quite a bit of positive press for the game. This combined with some glowing previews made the public suddenly a lot more interested in Incognito's foray into online warfare. So did they pull it off?
You can purchase Warhawk in one of two ways, either through the PlayStation Store for $40 or on Blu-ray with an included Jabra Bluetooth headset for $60. Which one to purchase is up to your need/desire to communicate in-game with other members of your team -- you get the same game no matter which version you pick.

Graphically, Warhawk is amazing looking, especially considering the relatively small 800 MB download size. Everything in the game oozes polish from the simple intuitive menus to the incredibly crisp and cleaning looking graphics. Any naysayer who says the PlayStation 3 can't do anti-aliasing just needs to fire up Warhawk, this is one of the smoothest, least aliased title in the PS3's entire library. On the resolution side, those looking for another 1080p game to show off your expensive TV may be a little disappointed as the game only goes up to 720p/1080i, but don't worry -- it still looks fantastic on a 1080p set.
One of the most impressive graphical features of the game is its incredible draw distance and sense of scale. You can hover thousands of feet above the ground in a Warhawk, looking over the entire map and engaging in dog fights or plummet straight down and seamlessly transition into ground combat without any kind of framerate drop or load times -- it's beautiful and exhilarating.

What really makes Warhawk stand out though is its amazingly balanced and deep gameplay. The game offers five maps and four gameplay modes; Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Zones (a Battlefield 2-esque mode). You can play as one of the two sides, Eucadian or Chernoven -- both which have their own unique look and slight variations on their vehicles. The two sides are more or less the exact same though and so with the lack of unique strengths or any kind of backstory, choosing your side is more an issue of aesthetic taste than anything.
Once you've picked your character, you choose your spawn point and you're dropped into the game. This is where the gameplay depth first makes itself apparent -- do you jump into a Warhawk and tear across the map? Or do you get into the jeep that just pulled up next to you and man the mounted machine gun as the driver whips along the jungle roads to the next combat spot? Or maybe you're a defensive type player and want to protect the base? Plenty of options there too, with tanks for blasting incoming jeeps and enemy tanks or three different kinds of turrets for taking down Warhawks or oblivious ground troops.

While this might not sound that different from other team based games like Battlefield 2, what really sets Warhawk apart is the accessibility and speed of the gameplay. Unlike BF2, you don't need to spend 15 hours learning how to fly the planes -- within minutes the flight controls feel comfortable. The same goes with all the vehicles and various weapons, everything just feels tight and well thought out. Also, another little difference between the two games is that there are tons of Warhawks and vehicles available on the maps so you never feel like you're having to fight your own teammates for them -- it's a nice touch and helps keep the gameplay fast and frantic.
In another nod to BF2, Warhawk also has a ranking system where you are judged on your performance and given ribbons and medals as awards. Ribbons can be gotten by achieving certain goals like burning three people alive in a short period with the incredibly satisfying flamethrower, or going on an uninterrupted killing spree. As you gain more accolades, your character levels up and gains access to more and more customization options for your character. By the time you've hit the 5 or 6th level, your guy will look completely different from when he started, which helps keep everybody in the game from looking the same.
Also, unlike in BF2 where the better players have access to better weapons -- Warhawk keeps the playing field level the entire time. That General who just killed you did it because he was better than you, not because he had access to a more powerful machinegun. It's a little humbling but at least it's fair.
The only real issue that Warhawk suffers from is caused, ironically, by its popularity. In order to level up your character, you have to play on an official Sony server and unfortunately it can be incredibly difficult to find a spot open on ANY of their servers. It's not uncommon to have to spend 15-20 minutes trying to find a game, a problem that isn't helped by the server browser's habit of not showing the actual number of people in a game. So you end up just trying server after server until you finally find out where you can play. When you do get on, lag is nonexistent (at least on the official ranked servers) and will rarely get kicked out of the server. It's just unfortunate it can take so much effort just getting on in the first place.

While Incognito generated a lot of controversy when they originally announced the transition of Warhawk into a 32 player online-only combat game, they clearly made the right decision. Warhawk is a fantastic title that showcases the incredible depth that games on the PlayStation Store can offer and is a must-buy title for any shooter fan. The action is intense and satisfying, the graphics are beautiful and vibrant and the promotion system adds in an extra layer of addictiveness to a title that is already the game equivalent of crack. Highly recommended -- just don't get mad at us when you find yourself playing Warhawk instead of sleeping. It's happened to all of us.
PS3 Fanboy Score: 9.0

Second Opinion: Nick
I have to agree with Colin's review. Warhawk is, for the most part, "teh coolness". This is assuming you can get into a ranked server for a good match, which as Colin pointed out, is probably the biggest issue of the game. It should only be temporary, I imagine. If anyone's followed my awkward reviews of days past on here or especially on PSP Fanboy, you know I'm primarily an RPG guru. I know, that's narcissistic, but I'll take what I can get. I'm horrible at these kinds of games, yet, the way Warhawk is set up, I learned quickly and have become a formidable adversary for many gamers out there. I still have my qualms with the title, but they aren't limited to Warhawk, rather most games of this sort. In fact ... calling them qualms is a bit of a misnomer, as it's mainly my inability to handle snipers from across the map, or getting capped by a tank when I'm hiding behind a wall. It's not the game -- it's me. I like having control over my environments and knowing how to take care of things in any situation, but the online world strips that security blanket from me. It's still a very enjoyable experience, and I'm not rating the game any lower than Colin, but it does take some patience and getting used to if you're not typically into these games. You shouldn't pass it up, no matter your genre of preference. It's a sight to behold and a joy to play when you succeed, even a little bit. I've been Warhawk'd.

Third Opinion: Andrew
Warhawk is easily the best game in the PS3 library right now. Although I was initially hesitant about the $40 price tag, the incredibly accessible, deep and balanced gameplay of Warhawk more than justifies its price tag. Considering access to the PSN is free, this is a fantastic value, offering endless hours of gameplay. There's a lot to appreciate: the meticulous design of the levels, with its carefully placed points of contention. The beautiful graphics that go far into the horizon really showcase the game's understanding of scale: boosting in a Warhawk is just as exhilarating as seeing one fly by from above. Regardless of your vehicular preference, you'll find that everything in the game is balanced.
What I can appreciate the most is the ability to turn on another SIXAXIS controller and have a friend jump in. Up to four players can easily jump into an online game, making it the quintessential party game for any PS3 owner. You and your teammates will scream, cry, shout, yell in victory (or defeat). This has single-handedly made three of my Xbox 360 owning friends finally consider buying a PS3. It's a testament to how fantastic this game is. Look for me (and my friends) online as PSFanboy.

One problem I have had in Sony's servers is when the end game screen comes up it freezes and I have to restart. Other than thats its been one of my favourite PS3 experiences.
You could have had more variety in your scores. Maybe a 9.1 or an 8.9?
Fartbox 9000 @ Sep 4th 2007 5:39PM
Yeah, I had my doubts about this especially since I've never dug an online game without a mouse/keyboard but this one is top notch. But they really need to fix the stats already! I've been at 948 points since Friday!!!
adam @ Sep 4th 2007 5:41PM
i'm an insomniac. so i rarely sleep anyways. this fills the time between midnight and morning. not to make it sound like its only good for killing time. its a really good game.
Egster @ Sep 4th 2007 5:42PM
Jem you lazy bastard! ;)
But seriously Warhawk was a Godsend after a very long game draught.
aBe @ Sep 5th 2007 4:44AM

But incognito and Sony should fix al the server problems. It was nearly impossible for me to play last saturday.

phattie @ Sep 4th 2007 5:45PM
Anyone else having network problems? I cant even log on after i went to the 1.92 firmware.. before that i kept getting the "network error" in warhawk... wtf is going on?
EDGE @ Sep 4th 2007 5:45PM
This game is simply fantastic, the most fun I have had playing games in quite a while.
Justin @ Sep 4th 2007 5:54PM
LMAO...Jem...you suck
Popfrogs @ Sep 4th 2007 5:59PM
9. Ok, that's scary. I was gonna update to the latest firmware for the controller power down scheme but now i'm having second thoughts.
Can anyone second what he said? If I can't play Warhawk on 1.92 I'm not upgrading.
P17TY @ Sep 4th 2007 6:10PM
Warhawk rules, except the ranking system sucks. Anyone now when they will fix it, otherwise its 10/10 for me
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Sep 4th 2007 6:14PM
rofl Jem you're lazy.
PhillyVu @ Sep 4th 2007 6:15PM
I updated and can get in fine. In fact, I've gotten into 3 out of 4 Sony ranked servers the first try.
You should be OK.
LOLCat @ Sep 4th 2007 6:21PM
Other than the game freezing regularly and the inability to level up the game is great. It's truly the game to have if you own a PS3. Hopefully this is just the beginning.
BlackBeltJones @ Sep 4th 2007 6:21PM
It looks fun but I'm not into games that are only multiplayer. I hate when 100% of my gaming experience rests on the shoulders of 15 year old kids in Iowa.
BlackBeltJones @ Sep 4th 2007 6:22PM
@ Jem
You are truly outrageous.
Justin @ Sep 4th 2007 6:34PM
im playing right now with fw 1.92
Brandon @ Sep 4th 2007 6:39PM
What makes me scratch my head is why PSM rates the game a 6.5 an everyone else on earth rates the game in the 8's and 9's. Their review complains about things the other reviews doent even see as problems. Not to mention they talk about the 60 dollar blu-ray version as being expensive, while seeming to either not be aware, or at least not acknowledging that the downloadable version exists. The whole review in their mag is oddly harsh. So its nice to see another positive review, it seems PSM's score is the only anomaly.
dancingtosirens @ Sep 4th 2007 6:43PM
I bought the game yesterday and I played it from 11 pm until almost 3 am.
Needless to say I slept in for much longer then I had originally wanted.
Extremely good multi-player game.
I usually hate playing online because of all the kids and jerks who play who just talk trash, but so far it's been extremely satisfying.
if anyone wants to play, my PSN is dante_must_die
J_Swayze @ Sep 4th 2007 6:46PM
In Warhawk, can you play an offline multiplayer on a single PS3?
konajinx @ Sep 4th 2007 7:15PM
Dear PS3fanboy writers:
The possessive form of "its" does not take an apostrophe. Go to school much?

@ 20
dude, i agree 110%...the PSM (more like PMS) magazine rated the game on its acceptable price and what the game DID NOT have, while other review sites such as Gamespot, Gametrailers, IGN, review what the game HAS. This game to me is and easy 8.5 and above.

by the time the first patch rolls around there wont be a better multiplayer experieince to be found, what an awesome game
Aquilian @ Sep 4th 2007 8:02PM
nice review, the game rocks indeed. I'm a little curious though: why hasn't the issue with the unability to rank up / update stats been mentioned? overwhelming popularity and problems with server capacity had to be expected, but the issue with the stats could almost be a reason not to get the game - at least until it is fixed ;)
nick @ Sep 4th 2007 8:24PM
i'm having problems playing warhawk with firmware v1.92. when i load it it says network error Timed out.
Dom @ Sep 4th 2007 9:35PM
Seriously, i downloaded the game about 3 days ago. Tried to play online but said everygame was full. I was very frustrated after just spending 40 dollars. I gave it a break for a day. Now the game has a server error. I decided i would delete it and try downloading it again since i had problems with the download. To my suprise i get to the PSN store and it's nowhere to be found???? WTF? I'm mad and wanna play!
Joey_Numbers @ Sep 4th 2007 10:06PM
Most everyone on my friends list is active on this game now... Must be selling very well.
John @ Sep 4th 2007 10:07PM
"You can hover thousands of feet above the ground... or plummet straight down and seamlessly transition into ground combat without any kind of framerate drop or load times"
This alone is a wonderful feat, and moves me far more to buying a game that I otherwise probably wouldn't consider. That "Aces" game was horrible, the frame-rate problems made it look like it was written for a traditional computer (and probably was).
I like to use software that is immediate and visceral, and I don't like to be reminded that code is not up to par.
I assume that the ability to get into games will increase shortly, as more games come and stragglers (like myself) end up actually buying Warhawk (haven't bought a ps3 game yet but am loving my rental of the Darkness), and then sh*tty players like myself can hope that we find some games with other... sh*tty players...
I've been reading ps3fanboy since it first started (I think), and I've seen it grow, a lot. I've seen the writers get better, I've seen the scope advance, I've seen when writers have their off days (no names).
But I think it's awesome that this little I dunno, "whole-in-the-wall blog that could" has chosen to allow the writers to share their actual experiences and opinions about this, aside from their jobs as journalists.
I don't know how you did it this time, but it would be interesting if in the future everyone wrote their game ratings before seeing the other writers' scores.
One thing, no one said why it was not a '10'-- although I suppose we can deduce that it's the wait time to get into a game? What would it take to make this game a 10? How did it not make that final step?
Hmmm... I'm thinking... first release, and guess what, everybody?
You know the creators of Warhawk are happy with this, the game is getting rave reviews, everywhere.
But after the champagne is gone, the creators wake up going... "Holy crap. We have to do it again, and we have to do it better."
Before Warhawk folks go back and try to improve on this nearly-perfect, "new" intellectual property,
I would tell them to look at two franchises: 1)Halo (it's strength was made on multiplayer), and 2)Ratchet and Clank (every release is somehow better than the last, and they keep going, and going, and going...)
I think successive releases have a shot at 10... maybe not the 2nd one, but (of course) definately the 3rd. On the 2nd one you try to fix any naggling problems (which appear to be small) and try to give the same thing, usually only bigger and prettier, adding some gameplay elements that are new but which don't detract from the overall feel and experience which players will always remember (see Halo2, any recent Legend of Zelda, Ratchet and Clank).
Ultimately, I wonder-- is this Sony's "Halo?" Not quite, maybe not by a long shot-- I'm not saying it lacks the quality, I'm talking anthropologically, numbers here, Halo has a huge base, and Warhawk is kinda like Halo in it's first days on Xbox.
I know one thing I would like to see in Warhawk 2, and which now they have the time and programming prowess to put in: a single-player campaign. They may need separate teams to pull this off, but it may result in a lot more buyers, and it may push them to the 10 mark... if they do this on the 2nd one, they may not hit 10, maybe a healthy 8.
But that just means that by 3, they have their experience. At that point, it's up to them.
Mouser @ Sep 4th 2007 10:57PM
Just got the game today. None of my achievements are saved after I quit a game. I tried five different servers, all ranked, all but one a "blue" server. Is everyone having this problem?
Also, whenever I try to watch one of the bonus movies on the BD, the screen goes black and the controllers lock up (the music still plays tho), and I have to cycle the power at the console to get it to come back. Anyone have a solution to this?
Other than these two problems, I'm loving the game.
Brett Boston @ Sep 4th 2007 11:00PM
Mine works fine after 1.92. If you don't update, you can't go online at all.
Metoo @ Sep 4th 2007 11:09PM
Dom, after you buy things from the store, they disappear from your store menu. You have to go to your Download List in the upper right corner of the PS Store. It's a silly feature and probably scares a lot of people.
Dan @ Sep 4th 2007 11:28PM
"In order to level up your character, you have to play on an official Sony server and unfortunately it can be incredibly difficult to find a spot open on ANY of their servers."
Wrong, bad editors. Any RANKED server, not just Sony, look for the trophy without the X on it in the server list. Sony servers are hard to get into, player run ranked servers are not.
andyscout @ Sep 5th 2007 1:36AM
I'm not completely sold that the game is balanced. Being in a Warhawk seems to be a stupid idea, especially when ground turrets and even a man with a rocket-launcher can easily eff you up.
Also, I'm having more problems now with 1.92 than before. I had to leave my PS3 for the weekend and now Warhawk keeps freezing and booting me from servers. I also can seem to login unless I logged into PSN prior to starting the game.
coplice @ Sep 5th 2007 8:03AM
@andyscout
am having some problem with 1.92 too, if it say timed out i close the game, sign out, sign back in, start the game and i can play
as for balance... i like gettining into a tank, drive on top of a hill in badland where there is a rocket launcher and use my tank canon to blast the turret/infantry on the bases and use my rocket to down warhawk :D
but the best are dogfight games! bip bip bip bip fuck fuck arrrrg kaboom!

W @ Sep 5th 2007 8:31AM
Yea, I updated to v1.92 firmware last night, and couldn't get onto Warhawk at all... pretty frustrating really. Anyone have any luck figuring out what the issue might be?
mystical_304 @ Sep 5th 2007 9:47AM
@39 Since your not completely sold (and appear to not have even seen or played it) I assume you don't know, or chose to ignore, the Chaff item in the game. Chaff can be used to redirect incoming missles away from you, also barrel rolling, and diving or climing gets the missles off you as well. And lets not forget given the terrain on most levels you can simply dive into a canyon or behind a large mountain/boulder and the missles don't path around them very well (they don't path around em at all for the most part). So given how power Turrets and Rockets are, any experienced Warhawk user can get out of it unless they are completely overwhelmed, at which point the balancing comes out and an expose Warhawk WILL be shot down by 2 missles, or 2 rockets fired from the ground.
kai @ Sep 5th 2007 10:17AM
is it just me or is the pistol completely useless?
GRANTED @ Sep 5th 2007 10:23AM
pistol is great. i have killed more people with the pistol than with a rifle. i usually hate screwing around picking up weaps though, so the pistol's all i got. i usually jump in a game, jump in a hawk, get the flag and RUN usually about 50 ft before i die or get in a jeep. all the while firing that pistol.
i love this game.
Popfrogs @ Sep 5th 2007 10:51AM
The pistol is worthless. It won't lock on like the rifle will and you might as well have a slingshot for all the firepower it has.
Warhawks...well, personally I have alot more fun being a ground pounder and taking over Zones. I forced myself to play a few Dogfight maps last night, that are Warhawk-only, and seemed to improve, but I still get pwnd all over the place. Warhawks are a death trap; if you could bail out with a parachute it'd add alot to the game.
mwolf @ Sep 5th 2007 11:03AM
I agree with others that this game is awesome but not being able to get into a server is frustrating as hell (and pretty much unacceptable considering there was a large scale beta). I actually spoke to someone at SCEA about this and they said the more complaints they have the faster it will get fixed (obvious I guess). So I am on a crusade to get as many people to complain about this as possible. The number for SCEA is 1-800-345-7669. Press 0 to get to an operator.
coplice @ Sep 5th 2007 11:32AM
@47
Warhawk are the fun i think, but when i started i couldnt live more than 1min before some ground missile or enem warhawk blow me up, dogfight games are the best to learn how use the warhawk
when i play normal game i use everything at my disposition, if you can get a rocket launcher and a tank, you can take down everything, and tank are the best thing to use to destroy enemy turret
@40
yeah its hard to find a game to play in sometime, warhawk team didnt expect to have so much succes i think :D
neil @ Sep 7th 2007 4:46PM
anyone know how i get into one of the ranked servers
mark @ Sep 10th 2007 4:33PM
I gotta agree with the connection to the servers problem. It's so, so, so annoying trying to connect and it says it's full when there is like 10 open spots. there should be an option to go to a random, open server using the filters you set.
