Analyst predicts $399 PS3 in 2008
It's time once again to look into the future. That's right, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities, all the way to the year 2008! And what does he see? He says that we should "expect a price cut no later than April, likely to $399 for the 80Gb model" of the PS3.This would be a $100 price drop on top of the already slashed $499 price he predicted for the holiday season. Pachter believes that Sony's recent IPO announcement, will enable Sony to drop prices even further for early next year. And hopefully, just in time for Metal Gear Solid 4.

I hate his misleading statements.

Seriously... Who the hell is this pachter guy anyway? Someone needs to tell him to shut the hell up already. Just because he gets paid to talk doesn't mean we have to listen and/or obey.
Gunegune @ Sep 7th 2007 9:06PM
Great pic. I'd like to see more stories with pictures like that.
Anyway, I'd say I have to agree with Michael Pachter on this one. That doesn't mean to take his statements as facts, though. They are just opinions. He has even stated on the Bonus Round that people ask him for his opinion, so he gives it to them. Sometimes he's right, sometimes he's wrong. Check out the interview if you haven't seen it yet. http://www.gametrailers.com/bonusround.php?ep=9&pt=1

Great...6 more months of shit sales as people wait for ANOTHER $100 off.
ruibing @ Sep 7th 2007 9:51PM
I think $499 is good enough for the 80GB. Just keep that, forget about bundles, if there are any let the stores promote them so the customers can choose which games they want (like what they do with the wii). And then just depend on the full lineup of games coming in September, November, and next year.

Pachter is an analyst for some big company. There was a thing on gametrailers about him, he makes tons of money doing very good analyzing for the company he works for, all the console analyzing he does it simply for fun. He reads tons of gaming webpages, and throws out his analysis for everyone to read. Even though he's only right a percentage of the time, he's apparently very good at his job for whatever company he works for.

Hahahah..I thought the pic was kinda obscure but I guess I'm not the only one that's seen that bit on Conan.
A price cut for the PS3 to $399 before April doesn't make sense. All the huge blockbusters are due out in March and they will move systems regardless of price.
Jay @ Sep 8th 2007 12:28AM
yo no disrespect but fuck this guy and his predictions. i mean damn he made a livin, and is now famous for predicting bullshit that never turns out to be correct? man hes kinda like uri gueller and his magical bending spoons, or george bush and his iraqi freedom bullshit. so no surprise if people become famous in this world for being stupid. thats how it works unfortunally.
John @ Sep 8th 2007 12:57AM
This guy irks me. Because he's right. Because whenever he speaks, everyone listens, including Sony. But he's pretty damn good.
I can just imagine myself Sony, kicking myself: "Damn that Pachter! For stating the obvious! If he hadn't gone shooting off his mouth like that we could delay price lowering another 6 months!"
But the key here is that Sony is doing their best to accomodate various arenas.
People bitch about no games and few demos, but remember the old days? Of even less games and even less or no demos?
The problem I see for Sony is kinda like the problem I face. They can pay their bills, and they're increasingly covering the debt that is the ps3.
But that's not enough, no, they have to keep lowering their price and keep being sensitive to public scrutiny and sensitivity and they have to fight off bad publicity generated out of greed.
How can you honestly badly publicize a system that has a .2% defective rate? I mean, haven't they done enough, already? But they keep rising to the challenge.
It's like in the 80's, when American cars were crap, ugly, unreliable (extremely), ugly (yes 2x), shit the crappy chrome didn't even meet in places, and Japanese manufacturers said, "You want a Nissan Sentra? Fine. We make them in 3 colors. White, red, and black. Some have air conditioning, some don't. That's it."
But the cars were reliable, efficient, and well-designed.
I forgot what I was talking about.

the truth is that this bullshit is cold reading. period. cross the road relentlessly and i can predict you are gonna get hit. 'Jay predicts that the ps3 will help reduce the blu ray diodes price so bad theyl actually release eventually cheaper blu ray players. and with oled tvs coming out soon by 2010 lcds will be so cheap everyone will afford them' Psychic, dont u think. time to make my money now!!!!! move over parcher fuk you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frankenstein Black @ Sep 8th 2007 2:52AM
Hidden in all the blow-hard noise there is a bit of projected or "wishful wisdom" here. And that is this: $399 (like it or not) is the psychological celling price barrier for a console regardless of how many bells and whistles are packed into it. Sony is learning this the hard way right now. I am convinced that $399 (if it happens, and it should) will in fact get all of those PS2 "fence sitters" to finally take the Next-Gen plunge!
Egster @ Sep 8th 2007 4:54AM
I agree with Frankenstein Black. There is an insanely huge group of PS2 gamers that will jump ship when the PS3 price drops alittle more.
SKI @ Sep 8th 2007 8:10AM
But won't that be too late? I thought Christmas 08 was the most important holiday for the PS3, but that probably will become Christmas 09 for a lot of you fanboys.
Popfrogs @ Sep 8th 2007 8:31AM
#16: Sony knows that this year will be an important shopping season for the PS3, especially considering it marks the 1 year anniversary of the console's launch. However, despite the excellent titles due out by Christmas, the real gaijin smash games are due out early next year. I don't need to name them, people have discussed them since the PS3 was announced.
gaijinsmash.net for the reference. :)

I hope he isn't paid per prediction...he already said this back in July:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26751
Bogatron @ Sep 9th 2007 2:44PM
@19: What is incorrect about that prediction? He said that he expects the 80GB model will drop to $499 after all the 60GB units are sold. Since they haven't all been sold, he isn't wrong yet.
Also, note that at the bottom of that article he is also quoted saying "We expect the USD 499 price cut to be maintained until early next year, when the 80GB model will likely be cut again to USD 399", which is consistent with his current prediction.
Bogatron @ Sep 9th 2007 2:46PM
Oops, I meant @20.
