High Stakes on the Vegas Strip hits the PSN this Thursday

The game is looking to offer a lot to the hardcore poker fans out there, with five different types of poker, online tournaments and extremely detailed statistics on players. In addition as you play you'll win points to unlock extra content like special items and clothing for your in-game avatar so that you can customize your character to your liking. Supposedly, there will even be 'bling' so that everybody at the table knows what a ballah you are. Any other poker fans out there looking forward to High Stakes?

being a poker addict I was thinking about getting this... for about 2 seconds. Pokerstars is free, and I can play for real money. No "REAL" poker player buy this. As anyone who plays will tell you since it is not for real money it kinda kills the game. If its not for money then people dont care and will play like donks, call with stupid hands and suckout. I like to put pressure on other players, you cant pressure someone if they dont have anythingto lose. They will think to themselves "Oh J10 suited, great drawing hand... i'm all in".
I'll stick to the sit and go's on pokerstars.

I am a Hold'em addict and I will get this game. I don't like playing for real money if I cannot see the players "tells." I enjoy playing hold'em enough that I can play for "play" money and still have fun.

it's lame to put your name at the bottom of your comment... when it's right there at the bottom right. this game, what happened to the 6 player camera feeds? I was planning on getting a pink feather boa and dressing up for the camera etc. now i'm disappointed

I'm also a "real" poker player, as I go down to the casinos and play in tournament fairly frequently. I just don't like to play on the computer. I'd prefer something on the console that's more casual, like a poker night then a poker tournament.
Maybe no "real" online poker player will buy it. I'm not sure why you would if you've already got a software poker game. But for me, as someone who normally only plays live, I'm willing to give this a chance.

I'll pick it up. It's less than some of these portable hold 'em machines out there and there's competition.
I'd like to be able to spend my winnings on stuff for HOME though, that would be awesome. Have a good night gambling and be able to buy stuff for my apartment or score a free movie download for every million I make or something...

As any REAL poker player knows TV and Movies have overplayed the importance of physical tells. The most reliable "Tells" are betting patterns and how many hands are played and from what positions. Ex. Someone who raises every single time they are under the gun has no idea what they are doing. Or a guy that plays one hand an hour is a rock and prolly has AA if he raises utg. Also who continuation bets on the flop and who slow plays. those are the real TELLS. In real life people dont wiggle their noses or scrath their ears when they have a monster hand.
Also real players play at 9 and 10 handed tables.

I don't think live feeds are a good idea. I would hate to go into a table and see some nasty image. I think this should be a good game for those who like poker. I wonder if they can link it with those real online poker and have a type of game where it is real money at stake.

Geez, every online player says that Showstopper. And while I play that way myself, considering the number of poker professionals who disagree with your opinion, I'd have to say there's got to be something to tells.
Oreo cookies, no. But heightened pulse, tensing muscles, bouncing legs, etc... all these things tell you something. The real trick is translating body language to information. Some are good at it, some aren't. But plenty of FBI profilers use these techniques to know when a suspect is lying, so it's not just some mythological thing.
But again, personally, I find betting patterns more easily read and predictable. Although, real pros know how to make you pay for only following their patterns.

Very good points. Part of the reason I like to see the player is not the nose twitch or other nonsense (mostly), seeing the player when he bets, how he bets, when he folds, etc. That to me at least helps me to figure out what they are doing much more reliably than a generic avatar.

I have really been looking forward to this game - the first HD poker game for my PS3. I know, I know its not for real money, but I still have fun playing for funny money too. Some people try to play seriously - I do. If anyone wants to play add me when Thursday comes around (same username) - See you on the tables.

You can still have a competitive game of poker with this game if you get the right group of people. You just need 6-10 good people or so and just set times you play with them. The examples you give to why you wouldn't play a poker game on a console are things that I see people do in real life, I just choose not to play with those people. I think you will be able to do the same with people that play that way on line.

Here is what Gamespot was told at E3...
"The game will support both the old EyeToy and the new PS3-only Eye cameras; you'll see little full-motion video windows by each player's name when you're playing online (where up to six players are supported)."
Funny there is no mention of it in the new article.

As a player who has entered multiple WSOP tourney's, even placing top 10 3 times (you have seen me on TV), I can assure you that this downloadable is going to be as close to real poker as most will get. Lot's of posers in this thread spreading misinformation.

Back in the day I used to love gambling: Poker, craps, blackjack, race track (horse and dog) and the occaisional illegal football bet. But I had to stop (my religion forbids gambling)... So, I love games that give me the rush I used to get when I went to the casinos without using cash. So, this game is a no brainer for me. =) Can't wait to play!!
