Firmware version 3.71 available now

We suspect v3.70 might have held a security loophole and Sony, for once, caught it before the homebrewers did. So while the update doesn't yet do anything visible, you can feel safe in the knowledge that your PSP is safe from homebrew ninjas. Probably.

That is good news if it's True SONY needs to keep homebrewers at bay at all cost.!! We must all do our part to stop Piracy!!
GoBob @ Sep 13th 2007 8:07AM
Yeah Tim, you aren't Sony PR.
/sarcasm
Too bad 3.70 is still pretty easy to get. It's highly likely that the homebrew teams will likely be analyzing 3.70. Also, as far as I'm aware, Pandora still works on 3.71.
Bored @ Sep 13th 2007 8:16AM
I wonder if it was the new Themes functionality that needed to be patched...
DurhamNC @ Sep 13th 2007 8:27AM
It appears to have taken away the PS Spot icon under Network on the XMB. This, apparently, wasn't meant for the US or North America Region.
PSP_Amigo @ Sep 13th 2007 8:52AM
yahhhhh riiigghhtt sony will stop homebrew this time!
just like the last time and the last time and last time and last time see a trend here??
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Sep 13th 2007 8:56AM
To DurhamNC: You are correct. 3.71 is a localization fix because the Sony servers sent out the wrong firmware type (I think it was the European version) into North America.
You get a GOLD star, DurhamNC!
dave @ Sep 13th 2007 9:05AM
yeah i kinda read it that the new features were for the ps3 not for 3.71 as .01 is usually a smaller fix up :)
but i could be extremely stupid ;)
Tim Parsons @ Sep 13th 2007 9:11AM
yeah the PS PSOT was difinitly for JAPAN,. I mean did the whole page being in JAPANESE hint to anything ? lol seems like the 2 updates that came out overnight for PSP and PS3 were simply to correct errors in the 2 updates that came out monday,.
Guess it won't be long now b4 the PS3 hits the Big 2.0,. and PSP don't look like it's far from the big 4.0 ,. It's an exciting just to think what SONY has in store for us!
And the Tokyo Game Show only a week away!!
Los Havros @ Sep 13th 2007 11:31AM
Must have been Japanese, cos I'm in the UK, and I got the PlayStation Spot icon removed from my system
kingofwale @ Sep 13th 2007 9:46AM
I absolutely LOVE how Sony (or certain Sony PR guy here. ;) couldn't tell the difference between "Homebrew" and "Piracy" even if it kicks him in the ball and makes the illegal copy of it. :P
HomeBrew should be ENCOURAGED while Piracy shouldn't. Get your data right please.
ps3walls.com @ Sep 13th 2007 10:19AM
Anyone getting PSP Error Code 00000001 when Scanning for a Access Point????
Tim Parsons @ Sep 13th 2007 10:01AM
@9 ,. if it's enables playing of copied/downloaded PSP games then it's SUPPORTING PIRACY!!!!
so your trying to tell me these HOMEBREW FIRMWARES don't allow that huh?
kingofwale @ Sep 13th 2007 10:10AM
>if it's enables playing of copied/downloaded PSP games then it's SUPPORTING PIRACY!!!!
so does DVD/CD burners, FM recorder (go talk to RIAA) and even camera in theater, should they be considered too?
Just because it LET you have more freedom, it doesn't mean you have to go do something illegal with it. Self-checkout gives you the freedom to checkout by yourself, does that give you the right to put a sticker for a pen onto the box of a Plasma tv? (trust me, someone tried that and was caught).
Homebrew frees the PSP, don't blame homebrew when a few people decided to mis-use it.
cj2112_cj2112 @ Sep 13th 2007 11:45AM
I would be willing to be 98% of PSP users don't use and probably know nothing of homebrew. The percentage of PSP users that are actually running homebrew applications is even smaller, and even fewer who are running homebrew are running existing games that are available in the store in their PSPs.
This is a tempest in a teapot. I know all about homebrew, know that I could use it to snag games and play them, but choose not to. Why? Because it is too much bleeping trouble. I can just as easily plop down $39 for Madden as I can worrying about bricking my PSP, and torrents, and all that jazz.
There will always be people who tinker with things in every industry. I really don't get the contempt for tinkerers. I don't think piracy is really impacting Sony's and game developer's bottom line related to the PSP.
Wolfrider @ Sep 13th 2007 11:02AM
Homebrew also allows smarter people than those who work at Sony to develop functionality for the PSP that isn't normally included.
It also allows for emulators which means I can dump console games and take them on the road. Though most people will download ROMs for that functionality, who cares? Most of these games aren't sources of revenue anymore anyway.
And by the way. When you purchase a piece of hardware it becomes your property, which means you're entitled to make modifications to it. Sony constantly trying to bury homebrew simply isn't playing fair.
Tim Parsons @ Sep 13th 2007 11:20AM
Free's the PSP?,.. LOL now that's a bold statement ,. yes SONY has the poor thing imprisined LMAO
Kxpuc @ Sep 13th 2007 11:48AM
@Tim Parson my PC CAN play pirated games so it must be stop'd! I can play pirated Pong with a a table, paddle and ball but It needs to get fixed. But oh well. I guess using Homebrew to put freeware on it is also piracy
Random1448 @ Sep 13th 2007 11:55AM
people 3.70 was a Japanese firmware that got sent to north American psps by accident, 3.71 is just correcting it. This update has nothing to do with homebrew. Sorry Homebrew users you're not that special.

To everyone who says that homebrew should be encouraged, I understand the point you're trying to make, but homebrew, whether legal or not, voids your warranty. Unless Sony adds a feature to let some types of homebrew be made, then it is not encouraged by Sony.
Jedi D-Dog @ Sep 13th 2007 1:01PM
By Mr. Tim Parson's logic, does not the very existance of a PSP support piracy because it's possible to run custom firmware on it?
You can't control what people do with anything they buy. So I don't understand the point of ranting on here about homebrew & piracy.
GoBob @ Sep 13th 2007 1:03PM
@Saigon
No, there were definitely people here that were anti-homebrew that were definitely NOT Sony PR. However, you and Tim Parsons are definitely suspicious. Besides, it's not as if the suspicion is unwarranted. Sony has been known for impersonating users.
Saigon @ Sep 13th 2007 1:19PM
"However, you and Tim Parsons are definitely suspicious."
Lol, good insult! /sarcasm
Too bad, in occasional posts I've made this site, I've been open to fact that I DO use homebrew.
So please, tell me how I'm suspicious of being a Sony PR? I neeeed to hear to this...I want a good laugh.
GoBob @ Sep 13th 2007 2:12PM
Taking an anti-homebrew stand while using homebrew makes absolutely no sense. Explain that.
PSP_Amigo @ Sep 13th 2007 2:33PM
I love my CFW
I use homebrew to play games I bought years (in some cases decades) ago on the SNES,NES,GENESIS,C64,Amiga and Atari LYNX. I own these games so why the hell is it wrong for me to play them again on my PSP??? I also own 20+ PSP games, why the hell is it so bad if they can be played as ISOS and keep my orginal as a backup? The ISOS load faster and use less battery power. You whiners against homebrew think that that homebrew is killing the PSP when it only helps sell it.
I also like to play video in many different formats that the official Firmware does not support.
I also listen to other types of music formats, Mod,XM,S3m,STM,Sid ectect via a homebrew! I even use it as an alarm clock!
None of this is supported by Sony. Sony is finally supporting themes WHOOPDEFRACKINDOO this has been an option a long time.
Jordan @ Sep 13th 2007 3:18PM
Wait a minute, why would I want to keep my PSP safe from homebrew ninjas?
/makes no sense
merc25 @ Sep 13th 2007 3:19PM
linebeginstoblur, the warranty only lasts a year(or was it nine months?) from Sony. I have had the PSP since a couple of weeks after the launch, so is there any other reason why not to go homebrew?
Also keep in mind, there are those who don't care about ending a warranty.

Saigon, that isn't it at all. They are referencing this link: http://www.linkedin.com/in/timparsons .
They are thinking that our Tim Parsons and this Tim Parsons are one in the same; maybe he is, maybe he isn't.
"I'm curious as to how many people with homebrew do pirate games. I would be guessing that it's more than a "few". "
As would we all, but that is a hard task to determine who pirated what.
Saigon @ Sep 13th 2007 3:24PM
I NEVER said I was anti-homebrew. *sigh* Even if was, how exactly does that prove I'm a Sony PR? Explain that? You see, the point I was trying to make, was that any idiot can call anyone who isn't pro homebrew - a Sony PR. That person being accused isn't going to make the pointless effort of trying to prove the accuser wrong. That's the equivalent of me calling everyone who doesn't like the psp - a ds fanboy - even though they may not be.
So I've answered your question, so please answer mine. How am I "definitely suspicious" of being a Sony PR? Honestly, you should stop making such retarded accusations like that one, because it makes you sound like an idiot. Why don't I just say I'm definitely suspicious you're a pirate, because you use homebrew.
"As would we all, but that is a hard task to determine who pirated what."
Lol, indeed.

I just noticed that 3.71 eliminates the "enable flash player" function. Which is fine because if you bought a new psp slim you didn't have to enable it anyways.

Yea I was till I tried the mac idstorage fixer so that the xmb mac matches the real network mac. Could happen from the homebrew spoofer or from changing the wifi card inside it. In any cause there was a homebrew released recently that lets you "fix" it and it worked for me.
