1UP's Shane: DualShock 3 is "confirmed"
A listen to the latest episode of the 1UP Yours podcast reveals that the rumbling DualShock 3 is "confirmed," at least according to 1UP's lead Sony fanboy, Shane. He says that TGS will ultimately reveal the long-awaited rumbling controllers and the now-legendary 2.0 firmware, which will magically allow you to run many XMB tools from within a game. We're sure Sony's going to playing hardball at TGS, and you'll probably want to tune into our continuing coverage of the event, starting this Wednesday.

Shane's the Sony fanboy there, right? Anyway, it makes sense for Sony to announce a ton of big stuff at TGS, it is their big home convention. Also it might help draw some attention away from Halo... okay, it won't, but it'll give Sony fans something to talk about during the Halo launch.
I'm mainly looking forward to game announcements, personally. Even though there's been a bunch of leaks, I'm pretty sure there's still room for a good surprise or two.
Terrence @ Sep 16th 2007 11:49PM
Notice the glimmer in Shane's eyes; the look of hope. It is time....
But seriously, if they're able to release a rumbling controller, that'd bring a lot of people back home, I feel. I mean, if they were able to introduce rumbling controllers midway through PS1's life, then they can do it early in PS3's life.
phattie @ Sep 16th 2007 11:51PM
No rumble for me thanks, it doesnt do anything for me.
Han @ Sep 17th 2007 12:15AM
Oh good. My Sixaxis thinks I'm permanently tilting it to the right, so I was getting ready to go out and purchase a replacement one, but because the Dualshock 3 is now confirmed, I guess I'll wait it out.
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 12:09AM
Yeah i'm betting SONY will reveal the details of both at TGS as well as add some more juciey info about HOME,
But I do have one question ; as for in-game XMB,. Why?!? WTF is the point??? Friends list sure,. but other then that whats the point of being able to access the XMB in game??
lenny0487 @ Sep 17th 2007 12:15AM
@5 to be able to listen to music on the XMB while playing games
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 12:16AM
I guess though it would be nice to be able to transfer a few vids/mp3 or something without having to close the game or sometihng but I still dont see myself ever actually making use of that if they did include it. But I ain't gonna complain if they do LOL,. I just can't wait to get my hands on a Rumble SIXAXIS and HOME,. and 2.0 of course LOL
Jose @ Sep 17th 2007 12:22AM
I'm happy that these are finally coming to the PS3, but I dont think I should be too happy about it? I mean, shouldn't this have come standard? Anywho, looking forward to hopefully getting some good news about games...(*please oh please*)
Autopsy15 @ Sep 17th 2007 12:20AM
Thank God! I couldn't imagine playing Assassin's Creed or Killzone 2 without rumble! The SIXAXIS just feels so...empty. It's like firing a gun without the bang. I'm so glad that Sony is finally deciding to announce this. If it is launched before November, then it's going to be a heck of a year.
Oh, and @ 5
You could potentially access your music, send messages, game invites, chat invitations to your friends, join the games your friends are playing(one of the things I have been wanting to do for so long.), view messages from your friends without having to exit your game and shit, use the internet browser, and basically use all the features of the XMB without having to exit your game. It's a good thing really.
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 12:33AM
@9 true enough i guess i've just never had the interest in it enough to care but Extra/new features never hurt,. as for the friends list thing it would certainly not leave it up to game devs to include it in crappy ways Like in LAIR where half the time the LAIR NETWORK freezes anyway ,.Guess we'll know for sure about it all by this time next wekk as TGS runs from Thurs 20 - Sun 23,. Can't wait myself also to see what SqaureENix has there considering SONY's area at TGS is the biggest there Period twice the size of the 2nd biggest which is a tie between a few publishers one of which is SqaureEnix,.
SkeetSkiLee @ Sep 17th 2007 12:36AM
maybe this will get some developers to makes game for ps3.. since that's wat almost everyone complained about..=/ stooges lol jk and ooooo metal gear might get rumble after all~ =]

I think Shane is EMG's editor... no?
ruibing @ Sep 17th 2007 12:50AM
I hope the PS3 can use rumble for old PS2 games as well. I only want to use it for GT4.

Ste @ Sep 17th 2007 1:03AM
im not that fussed about having rumble
Pickoo @ Sep 17th 2007 1:56AM
I hope they release Home AND Firmware 2.0 sometime in the next month. That would be pretty awesome. And maybe even the rumble controller.
I hope the added rumble doesn't raise the price, because I've got a controller still in the packaging so hopefully I can trade that back in and get a rumbling one!
Waruwaru @ Sep 17th 2007 3:07AM

Uhm, nobody in Japan gives a flying fugg about halo.. unless you count 1 of the two 360 owners there.. technically it's half the fanbase then!
Paul @ Sep 17th 2007 6:20AM
firmware 2.0 will come out when home comes out because it adds another icon to the XMB. also i just started playing my 360 after like 6 months and when i felt the rumble i was like " WTF WAS THAT?!?!?" lol.
phattie @ Sep 17th 2007 7:26AM
Of course its hypocritical.. they were getting sued, wtf did you want them to say?
Titty Pink @ Sep 17th 2007 7:31AM
Right Haley's Comet,
just like M$ and 360 fanboys said HDMI was useless, (see Elite 360), the 60GB PS3 was too much HD space (see 360 Elite), a hardrive will never be necessary to play games because DVDs will be big enough (The first HD required games are in development). Yeah, I know EXACTLY what you mean...I don't need rumble, but I AM curious as to how this generation of rumble has changed. I MAY pick one up just because I can afford to do so, but it's FAR from necessary, OR a system seller for that matter...
Anyway, 2.0 should allow me to plug in my Seagate external HD and drag and drop media files without a workaround. If the PS3 is supposed to fully integrate into my life entertainment wise, this is a bare bones requirement. How are you all transferring music over? I need a better solution than a thumb drive...
Kspraydad @ Sep 17th 2007 7:47AM
Perhaps the new SKU currently being tested at the FCC is one that has the Rumble pack in (they'd have to test and approve the BT communication no?). Else, I'm expecting the lower cost PS3 announcement.
Either way SOMETHING is getting certified right in time for TGS. http://tinyurl.com/22auku

JKPierce @ Sep 17th 2007 7:48AM
I use TwonkyMedia or just my PSP, Titty Pink.
As far as 'hypocrisy' goes, I'd have to disagree. See, you're grouping all those that own the console. We'll call this number X. X can be split up further, enthusiasts (Y) and regular users (Z). Y most likely didn't mind the loss of vibration feedback; nor did Z much, but there's still some that missed the feature and would appreciate the option. But one can't logically take Y's opinion and project it onto Z's. It just doesn't make sense; they aren't the same people and are not making the same opine.
Even so, none such exclaimed (improved) vibration will sell the console. But don't let that stop one from making posts on the Internet about how other people's gaming habits are stupid. One should not dare let us all be in the same, friendly gaming community.

7. I had this problem with one of my controllers and have been patiently waiting for this announcement ;) .. my bedroom ps3 isnt really a good place for sixaxis but rumbling things ... oh yeah.
Ian @ Sep 17th 2007 8:15AM
@ Titty Pink
If you have a home network then there's really no need to use external thumb or hard drives to play stored media. I just move the XMB over to photos, videos or music and play files stored on my PC.
In case you've not got this working yet, here's how I've hooked my PS3 up to my WinXP PC...
PS3 in my living room is wired up to my router, which itself is directly connected to the phone/braodband line.
My home PC is upstairs and, using Home Plug, is also fully networked up to my router. The PC is Win XP, SP2 and, importantly, has MS Media Player 11 installed. Within the options of MP there is the option of 'sharing media' to other end points attached to your router (you should be able to identify the PS3 on a list of items attached within this option window). Tick the option to share your files.
Now, back on the PS3 (after my own quick run downstairs), I booted up, moved the XMB to Pictures and searched for 'Media Hub'. After a few seconds up pops all media files within 'My Documents' stored on my PC.
So now my son (2 years old) and I have regular dancing sessions in the wide open living room via the wonder of -
Toshiba HDTV
PS3 (I love you!)
Router
HomePlug
PC
MS Media Player
Ian @ Sep 17th 2007 8:18AM
@ Titty Pink
Just one last point, I have no need to transfer media on to my PS3 HDD but, if I did wish to do so, it's simply a case of highlighting the file on the PS3's XMB (the file referring to the file stored on my PC), hitting triangle and selecting copy.
sheamus @ Sep 17th 2007 8:28AM
Rumble is a must for driving games. I also like it for shooters, as feedback that I am being shot. I find it annoying when it rumbles becase I am shooting. I do so much shooting, that my hands go numb.

Rumble is really a big deal? Its a nice feature but i know many people who dont care one way or another, me included. I am not going out to buy a new controller with rumble added. I want more good games mroe than anything.
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 8:32AM
@28 an External USB HardDrive works fine with the PS3 now, it just depends on the drive. Many External Hard drive now are exactly like a usb thumbdrive Plugnplay simple as that, however some do require software just have to pick the right one.
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 8:39AM
@33 sweet I never even though of that ,.dUh,. LOL but for some reason my PS3 won't show up on the list,. does you PS3 show up under your network on your PC,should it for this to work,. hmm i'm missing something here,.

sammy @ Sep 17th 2007 9:02AM
@26
Why is anyone hypocritically happy? Of course any extra features are a plus point. I personally have never applauded the lack of rumble support. I remember almost everyone saying how much it would aid titles like Motorstorm. Sony took a company line in the midst of legal action. Just like Microsoft attacked the need for true HD in the PS3 as it is a feature they lacked themselves.. only later to add it to their own system. Then attacking Blu-Ray only to create a HD DVD add-on to combat it. There is no doubt that greater capacity is a benefit to games even if not all software needs it.
I seem to remember you making a fair number of points just directed at PS3. I feel you are not here just to discuss gaming but get involved in Purile cross system banter.
You seem to revel in a game of fruitless debate. If you actually made a proper even-handed point..that would be something different. Maybe write an essay on corporate ethics and attitudes which apply to all the major companies. Otherwise you are just wasting everybody's (including your own) time.
Emrah @ Sep 17th 2007 3:39PM
This is so good news. Rumbling is one of the most immersive aspects of gaming. The game connects to you using visuals and sound, but the added feeling of touch just completes it. I don't need the taste or the smell of a game so these three are all I need to sense from games :)
TRUTH @ Sep 17th 2007 9:34AM
WAIT!!! I thought Rumble was Sooooo Last Gen!!! LOL
OrganicShadow @ Sep 17th 2007 10:25AM
-Shane is I guess considered the resident Sony fan at 1up, but he seems to talk more about DS and other stuff than he does PS3. I think it isn't so much as he's the resident Fanboy on board, but that he's the only one that likes the PS3 in the 1up crew, and probably the only one that actually owns one yet.
-You guys remember how the 80gb PS3 SKU was found in a filing to the FCC before it was announced? And how the same thing is being done to a new PS3 SKU? Well has anyone tried digging up any new info on a new controller SKU from Sony? Or is that something that's not generally filed because it's not a big item- only an accessory?
-I believe new info on Home will be shown, and they will let us know when they will start letting people in, but I don't think it will really be much cause for excitement. To be honest I have lost enthusiasm for Home, and am only excited about the profile thing they are doing and the trophies, gamer points, etc. that they NEED to copy from Live. I probably won't even use Home once released. I just want to have a gamercard(didn't they register that?) and some sort of point system that is redeemable in the PSN store.
-I highly doubt that IF in-game XMB is announced that it will be FULL XMB. As in, I don't think you will be able to do any and everything in the XMB as you would outside of a game. I think it will be limited to only a handful of things, which will also be a bit limited. Perhaps: friends list, music, video settings, audio settings, bluetooth device settings, MAYBE the PSN store, and that's it. That's all you need really.
-As far as in-game music is concerned I would much rather games be created with the feature in mind so that it's not in such a way that your XMB music is playing ON TOP OF the game music/sfx. That would be extremely annoying if you had to play music in the XMB because it would be independant from the game audio, and it would just be playing on top of it. I would rather an option in the game's settings that let's you turn game music OFF and turn ON custom music, then point to a folder/folders where you want it to randomly select tracks from- OR, select those folders and when you are playing the game, pausing it let's you change tracks based on which folders you gave the game access to. If anyone has played WipeOut Fusion you'll know what kind of music selector im talking about.
-I hope they announce the controller as being on shelves before the end of 07, and I hope they name it SixSense instead of DualShock3 or ShockAxis or something else dumb.

@41
and i thought hdmi want needed for 1080p
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 10:31AM
@42 LMAO it isn't!! The only thing you need HDMI for when using a PS3 to get 1080P is upscaling of DVD's.
Everything else will go FullHD10800P via component cables. And 1080P is 1080P you can't tell the difference if it's over component or HDMI
Kspraydad @ Sep 17th 2007 10:35AM
@organicshadow
Yes...I have been searching both under Sony and Immersion and haven't found a new controller yet...
TheSh0wstopper @ Sep 17th 2007 10:48AM
@ Tim Parsons,
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Only a handful of Tv's can do 1080p through component... and by a handful I mean less than 10!!! Everything else will need either HDMI, VGA, or DVI. Also for the few that can do 1080p through component (like my Westinghouse W3) you should also remember that VGA and Component are still ANALOG signals and to get a DIGITAL signal you MUST use DVI or HDMI. Go do some research then come back.
As a side note I bit the bullet and ordered Heavenly Sword from Amazon. I usually NEVER play games with a female lead character. But everyone seems to love it and it was only 50 buck so wat the heck. Also it can keep me busy this weekend till Tuesday when Halo 3 comes out.

osvico @ Sep 17th 2007 11:00AM
Whether Microsoft released the Xbox360 2 years ago or go or not, they still should have taken into consideration the fact that the console is expected to last at least 4 or 5 years.
Games, obviously, were going to take up more space due to advancing graphics. So the need for either a medium with larger space or some way of reducing the effect of the limited space on DVDs should have been obvious.
I think the entire reason the hard drives or HD-DVD players weren't standardized features of all the SKUs was to either keep the Xbox 360 from getting too expensive (the quote of that Microsoft guy talking about $200 being the 'sweet spot' come to mind) or because Microsoft rushed the system out (which is what I think happened).
Kspraydad @ Sep 17th 2007 11:00AM
@Haleys
What you seem to be saying is that SONY built a machine that is capable now and in the future but MS built a machine that needs to be constantly upgraded to be current (HD/Wireless/HD DVD...at inflated proprietary costs BTW) or in some cases a whole new machine would be needed (HDMI).
I guess that is a choice of some but I'd rather buy something that is a little more 'future' proof.
TheSh0wstopper @ Sep 17th 2007 11:06AM
@ HaleysComet
I see what you are trying to do man. I noticed from your first post. You just want to start an argument.
I am actually happy Sony's systems are relatively similar. I slept outside of best buy for over 24 hours to get my 360. And now they come out with a new model that does everythign that mine SHOULD HAVE DOEN IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! That is rediculous. I have an HDTV that does 1080p and accepts HDMI. I could also use A LOT more harddrive space. But since M$ was in a hurry to beat the PS3 to the market they released an INCOMPLETE product and I have to go out and spend money?
Dude if your happy with your 360 then good for you. The people who come to this site are happy with their PS3's. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO SHOULD ARGUE WHICH SYSTEM IS BETTER ARE THE PEOPLE WHO OWN BOTH!!! If you only have one you will be biased, its the truth. Also if you only have one you cant FULLY comprehend the experience that they both offer. I dont care if you play it at your cousins house or your friend has one or you go to your neighbors house... Its not the same as having it in your house! I own both and enjoy both, However I LOVE MY PS3's HARDWARE!!! I post on this site almost daily, I honestly dont think I have EVER posted on Xbox360 fanboy.
TheSh0wstopper
"HDMI is not needed this gen, and neither is a larger harddrive. But what the heck, lets revise our console and put them in. Hey while we're at it lets make it black"
Tim Parsons @ Sep 17th 2007 11:18AM
@47 your the one who doesn't know WTF he's talking about. alot more then 10 Tv's can hanlde 1080P over componetn and who said anything about Digital or Analog? Stay on the same page fool, if your gonna argue about something don't change the topic half way through. 1080P is 1080P Digital of Analog don't make a difference. a 1080P signal is exactly that over Component or HDMI. unless the TV got shitty Component inputs it should look NO different then the signal from the HDMI cable(unless you got an extremly long cable, the normal 6-8 cables won't change anything) So why don't you GO DO SOME RESEARCH AND COME BACK!! Do the kind that actually imvolves hands-on with a HDTV!!!
Her'es a hintm, take a Tv that supports 1080P over HDMI and Component,. plug the cables in,. get a device the pumps 1080P out over HDMI and Componet(yes the same device for comprassion results) and then see the diference for yourself. unless you Tv sucks you won't see any because 1080P form the PS3 over component and 1080P over HDMI from the PS3,. or 720P or even 480P it don't matter it won't look different AT ALL!!!! Or at least it shouldn't
