Crisis Core sells 470k in first week -- 100k PSPs also sold

Yes, we know. Another day, another half-dozen headlines featuring the inexplicably popular adventure that is Final Fantasy VII. The popularity of the franchise cannot be ignored -- according to the latest sales charts from Japan, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core sold around 470,000 copies in a single week. This also prompted the sale of nearly 100,000 PSP units, which actually topped the number of Nintendo DS Lite units sold. This is something to be celebrated!

Even though the DS had to bow out of its almost unending chart domination, the release of Crisis Core didn't take the number one spot on new releases. Pokemon is still the most popular, advancing over the city of Midgar with about a 100,000 unit lead. Regardless, this should be proof positive that the PSP is in no way a failure and that if fantastic games are developed for and released on the handheld, sales will accumulate into a gigantic ball of Meteo-like proportions. Or was Meteo more of a Final Fantasy IV reference? Alas.

PSP outsold DS. (when was the last time that happened?)

450K is a very good number. It just goes to show that if you make a good enough game, people WILL buy it.

so... 3 million worldwide in its lifetime is not out of question.

They need a 77777 limited edition here as well. I just bought a PSP bundle a few games. I can't wait for FF Tactics, Disgaea, and Crisis Core to come here.

@6 it means although we wont over take the DS in over all sales we at least showed Nintendo and everyone else that the PSP is still relevant and will continue to put up a fight. Just like how king Leonidas was killed n 300 but he cut Xerxes and show'd that even he could bleed. YEEEESH! I shouldn't have to explain these things, but 300 is so kick ass that I will ;)

Tim, I doubt that will happened. This is happening because of the seven part of the title, rather than the FF part.

OK, why do you need to put down the DS?

Is it not enough to celebrate the success of a seemingly great new game and the associated sales boost for the platform we all love?

It is like I tell my kids - putting someone else down *never* makes you better.

wait i think we're all forgetting who has dominated this whole era of video games minus nextgen systems. But ps3 will sell and itll sell good. Nintendo stuff is hot for a while then it settles down always. Sony still runs video game and dont ferget it. They also have sold more games systems than nintendo with the ps1 and ps2 then nintendo has with all of their systems. And if u say psp is a failure then so is the xbox and gamecube because psp has outsold both of em.

So, the psp outsold the ds one week because of the combination of an extremely popular game, limited edition psps based on that game, and a new psp coming out. For all of you who think this is a signal psp will outsell ds on a weekly basis this is false. The psp is doing much better, but not as good as the ds. I would expect these numbers to at least half within the next two weeks.

PS+PS2= ~220 million
All Nintendo systems ever=more the 450 million (this isn't even counting all of them)

The Xbox and GC are considered failures, but the GC was a financial success.

For all the sony haters
Nintendo has sold 176.02 million with a total of 5 systems.
While sony has sold 227.07 miliion systems with 3 systems. For psp haters the psp has outsold the nintendo gamcube and microsoft x-box in2 years.Sony is the leader in videogames PERIOD.

Yeah, I think it was summed up nicely. This was not an average week for the PSP due to the slims, limited edition CC PSPs and CC. But, now that everyone who was gonna buy a new PSP and CC has already done so, expect the figures to drop exponentially. And just cuz it sold alot (as all FFs do here in Japan) doesnt mean its an amazing game. Sure CC has it's strong points, but I dont think the gameplay is one of them. I dont care much for doing the RPG comparisons, but I think it can be done with CC and Jeanne. Jeanne I love for the gameplay and battles, while I hate the useless cardboard personality of the characters. Seriously, if I could just fight a battle with Jeanne and Gilles I would. CC draws me in for the story. Seeing Zack meet up with the other characters before FFVII takes place is the only real reason I'm playing it. CC just doesnt feel like a FF. You play as 1 character, u dont change weapons/armor and I find the battle system uninspiring and quite boring. Both are decent RPGs but for me, neither one succeeded in bringing together a great storyline/characters with a great battle system. Of course, just my opinion...
