TGS07: Uncharted hands-on

To show off the new and improved controls, the demo featured some truly menacing levels. One level took place in a decaying courtyard, not unlike one that would be seen in Gears of War. Laser sights will aggressively pursue your character, as you hide behind cover. Grabbing a sniper rifle, the player must quickly try to kill his aggressor -- a single shot from the sniper's gun will mean instantaneous death (as we regrettably found out). The scope of your rifle focuses around whatever your vision is centered on: a nice touch that makes sniping much easier to manage.
The gunplay and hand-to-hand brawling all feel a lot better than before. But, that doesn't mean things are quite perfect. The camera never feels perfect, and the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears. Regardless, the platforming and puzzle solving on display certainly add a nice touch of variety to the game. The platforming feels satisfying, thanks to Nathan's natural animation. Each jump feels weighted down by real gravity, and seeing Nathan barely make a jump, only to hold on to a ledge, adds a sense of real danger to the environment. The puzzle solving takes a page from Folklore: Nathan must read the notes from Drake's diary to progress. In the demo we played, we had to do a simple statue rotation puzzle, but we see a lot of potential in the concept.
Overall, we're glad to see that Uncharted has made so much progress. PS3 gamers are thirsty for a good adventure game, and with a little bit more polish before its November release, it looks to fit the bill.

Looks great!! Can't wait for this.

"the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears."
Not necessarily a bad thing. Gears is so super x-treme 2 da maxx, I feel like I need to have a do rag, soul patch and maybe one of those lame tribal tattoos to play it. Having it at a more realistic level might be good. Not every bullet needs to seem like a cannon shell.

Interesting. I didn't realize I was reading XBox360 Fanboy.

The combat system and duration will be key to its success then. Knowing how critical some reviewers are of PS3 games, it needs to be perfect. The developers need to ask themselved, "what else should I improve upon?" all the time.

"the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears."
??? Maybe because this is an adventure game?
JL @ Sep 19th 2007 2:06PM
This game better take me more than 6 hours to beat.

@2 Ha, I totally agree!
Popfrogs @ Sep 19th 2007 2:30PM
Yoon is such a goombah...why even mention Gears? It doesn't compare in any way to an adventure game like this. Maybe because it's third person?
Weird. That's all I can say.

"the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears."
see this proves that this not a suppose to be a fanboy the writters play the 360 unless this came from another source. we should start a petition to change the name to PS3Info.com because this fanboy crap gets on my nerves. all i want to do is state my opinion and not be called a fanboy for it just because im on a site with fanboy in its name.

"the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears."
so are you all trying to hint putting a chainsaw to the end of the gun.

I agree that this comment was totally out of place. Its like the writer was stretching for something to put the game down while glorifying 360 in some way. Dont get me wrong Gears is a good game (I prefer RFOM's single player though) but come on. And I am soo tired of Gears. The most OVERRATED game in the past 5 years.
On topic...
I'm excited for Drake, should be fun. Glad they fixed the camera and controls as those 2 aspects can KILL otherwise good games (see Lair).

One thing I will give this game, it's not all in a single shade of brown and grey. I think that's the thing that's annoyed me most about the next gen games so far.
Luke @ Sep 19th 2007 3:51PM
I think this game is gonna be good. Can't wait to get my copy.
deman @ Sep 19th 2007 4:42PM

"the action lacks the visceral punch of Gears"
this comment is totally relevant bc the shooting may play alot like Gears.
in respect the platforming could be likend to Prince of Persia.
both great games for what they do.
quit the bitching and sobbing please.
with that cleaned up, this game looks pretty nice and is probably my reason for picking up a PS3 this christmas.
ryano @ Sep 19th 2007 7:01PM

i hope you are wrong and that each perform their best equally and give the gamers great and different experiences for many years. =D

"Dont get me wrong Gears is a good game" "most OVERRATED game in the past 5 years".
don't see how you can have both opinions at the same time.
Gears is a very powerful single player experience. probably the most engaging albeit short game experience i've had in a long time. to top it off it's also a very iconic and marketable franchise as apposed to RFOM.
to be short: it does narrative shooting right.

post apocalyptic worlds are in I suppose. lotsa browns in there. more on the way with Killzone 2 and MGS4.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME!
Its the reason I got a PS3!
I want to see lots of ads for this game.

Andrew Yoon is a 360 fanboy, he disses LocoRoco because more complex than his brain can handle, he says MGS online ripped off from Halo and now he says Drakes Fortune is not as good as Gears, ignoring that they are different genres.
