The Poll Police have pulled out of their duties in Tokyo, as the Tokyo Game Show winds down. We believe it was T.S. Eliot who once said "This is the way Tokyo Game Show ends; not with a bang, but a whimper." Well, if Eliot were a gamer, we're sure that'd be true. Anyhow, we've got our opinions about the show for this year, but we're curious about what you thought. So, our poll for this week is quite simple: what impression did you take away from TGS?
We don't know if it was the plethora of trailers and moderate dearth of playables, or the delay of
Home, or the already-common-knowledge announcement of the DualShock 3, but TGS was missing a bang this year. Our personal opinion -- don't vote just to agree. However, you should check out our results from
last week's poll after the jump. Technically, most of you should have been pleased.

So, that's that. We did get to see a new trailer for
FFXIII and lots of
MGS4 content, even though the former was behind closed doors and we won't get to show that trailer to you quite yet. As for the rest of the votes, well, you may or may not be happy about the show floor in Tokyo. That's all for this week, so check back next week to see how your peers viewed TGS this year. As always, we appreciate your continued support by voting!

I'm mad about FIRMWARE 2.0
Kattleox @ Sep 23rd 2007 6:45PM
I was really hyped. We got to see some new White Knight Story footage, but I was really hoping for more. I thought there would be a demo on the Japanese store of some TGS game; Crisis Core, WKS, FFXIII, Folklore, or anything else for that matter. The store dissapaointed, though, with a bigger US update than a Japanese one! I just hope there is some TGS content (HD Final Fantasy or White Knight trailers) there next week.
Hobo Joe @ Sep 23rd 2007 7:10PM
I don't much care for Metal Gear and I didn't get to see the FFXIII that I'm hearing so much about. Ergo, I was not impressed.
I blame you, PS3 Fanboy.

Where were the "three big announcements" by Capcom? I'm still waiting for that.
MGS4 did rock my world.

I'm seriously disappointed. Not only is the Dualshock 3 not out till spring, but it's the same seriously weak rumble as what was in the Dualshock 2! What the hell happened to immersion's new rumble tech and/or touchsense? WTF?

@Jon and Stef -
You guys are seriously unsatisfied with your PS3s. While I agree that the PS3 library isn't strong as the 360, it is a whole lot stronger than the 360 was in its first year. In fact, I dare say that the PS3's holiday lineup is just as strong as the 360's, unless you are a major Halo fan, in which case you would have a 360 anyways. The only games 360 has that PS3 doesn't is Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata (until 2008), PGR4, Dead Rising, and Fable 2. I don't count Gears of War since it is available on the PC.
As for the hands-on for the new rumble sixaxis, a 15-min try with one that is probably more of a prototype isn't really the same as trying it yourself. Wasn't the reason it wasn't included initially because of the lawsuit by Immersion technology?
As for good games coming out by 2010? Here's a full list of good exclusives coming after 2007, most of them are gonna arrive in 2008:
Disgaea 3
God of War III
Gran Turismo 5
Driver 5
Eight Days
Fifth Phantom Saga
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Hot Shots Golf 5
Jack and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Online
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Monster Hunter 3
MotorStorm 2
SingStar
Shin Megumi Tensei: Persona 4
Steambot Chronicles
Star Ocean 4
Tekken 6
Valkyrie of the Battlefield
White Knight Story
Yakuza 3
Seriously, if you are just gonna complain about the console like this, you might find more sympathy over at the 360 fan site, though they are a bit engrossed into Halo 3 at the moment.
NastyN8 @ Sep 23rd 2007 8:50PM
i like how you all bitch about something that hasnt even been out for a year. Wheres this wheres that... wheres your patience. Really .. lets go back to 360 when it launched.. 2.Interest in the PS3 Is higher than before with more exclusives.
3.The Ps3 Isn't even a year old! Look at how xbox did its first year. when did gears come out?
Yes we NEED games now!-But we have HS,WarHawk,Rfom...etc. Unreal, Rachet, and Drake's Fortune are not Far Away!
Oh and the wii I'll give up Console gaming before I buy one :(
Justin @ Sep 23rd 2007 11:06PM
oh yea. MGS4 blew me away.
Kattleox @ Sep 23rd 2007 11:40PM
Rats. I was gonna flame the trolls, but it looks like I was beat to the punch. :(
At any rate, the PS3 isn't a shooter console. PlayStation never has been. It has good shooters, but not amazing shooters. What it does have in spades, however is VARIETY. The 360 has Western RPG's, Western FPS's, Western FPSRPG's and...er...that's all. I, for one, am content with Resistance and Warhawk. I won't say they are better than Gears or Halo, but they keep me satisfied until UT3 or KZ2 come into my house.
So, will I take offense at being able to see progress in my Action games, Adventure games, RPG's, Stealth shooters, FPS's, and everything in between? NO. So what if I have to wait another three months while you are playing Halo?! I have the Killzone Beta, Folklore, GHIII, Assassins Creed, Orange Box, Time Crisis, Ratchet (everything to some PS Fanboys), and who knows what else before the holiday season comes to a close.
Then I'll have to wait THREE WHOLE MONTHS to play Chains of Olympus, MGS4, DMC, SCIV, KZ2,
LITTLE BIG PLANET,
GTA, Home, and then all the other PSP titles (Crisis Core ring a bell?) PS Fanboys have everything to wait for. And then some.
hawkeye @ Sep 23rd 2007 11:52PM
@jon, so your telling me ports of games arent as good as the original? you a genious. same thing happens when it is ported from playstation to xplop. and pretty much every game you listed i can play on other systems like say my PC. that is the reason i wont buy an xbox is because every game that you can play on it you can either play on a playstation system or a PC, even halo 3 will eventually be on it, might not be quite as good but it is pretty much the same thing, and i have patients, i can wait til it come out on pc as i have done with the other 2. i for one cant wait until that game has been out for at least a month so i can stop hearing about the damn thing. i mean halo is a really good game but it is WAY to overhyped even when played on the xcrap.
ruibing @ Sep 24th 2007 12:15AM
@Jon
At first I thought you were just a little mad at Sony as a PS3 owner, but now I really doubt you own a PS3 yourself.
Of the twenty titles you listed, a lot were available on the PC as well at the same time. What in the world is the point of listing games that you don't need to purchase a 360 to play? And the one only one that was a real heavy hitters were Gears of War (I liked it a lot), GPR3, Dead or Alive 4, Dead Rising and Perfect Dark.
The reason some of those games didn't play well even though it was released afterwards was because of poor ports. The Cell processor without its SPEs is just a dual threaded PowerPC processor running at 3.2 GHz, so its obviously not going to run as well as the Xenon CPU on the 360. But we've seen how good the graphics and smooth gameplay can be with Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Motorstorm, and more. Take DiRT for example, it runs better on the PS3 than the 360 and PC. It's all up to the developers to not make lazy ports, so blame EA for the lazy port of NFL 08 and a lot of their games.
Popfrogs @ Sep 24th 2007 12:36AM
Guys, don't feed the trolls. It just gives them more opportunity to rant.
And I'm with hawkeye on the last thing he said. I'm tired of hearing about Halo3 also. I've never seen a marketing campaign like that before and I hope to god I never do again. Halo soda? Gimme a break.
Groundskeeper Willie @ Sep 24th 2007 7:16AM
Things would be better if Sony didn't leak the details of their announcements before they are actually made. The reason the Dualshock 3 announcement fell flat was because it was made a week earlier by 1-Up. The same thing happened with the PlayTV stuff at Leipzig, nobody cared because it had been discussed on the internet for ages beforehand. If Sony stop leaking information their talks might have a bit more impact.

I keep seeing you post about Gears, Lost Planet and Bioshock not being exclusives because you can play them on PC. Well, guess what? Not everyone plays games on their PCs, or even cares to. Hell, not everyone can afford a high-end PC, which will just be obsolete in a matter of years, anyhow.
If you're talking about consoles, then you have to include Gears, Lost Planet, Viva Pinata, Bioshock and company as exclusives. Otherwise, you're just being plain ignorant.
You taint your own argument the moment you bring a third platform into a comparison between two others. If you want this to be fair, let's talk about the games coming out for the PC that neither console will get.
Moron.
Kattleox @ Sep 24th 2007 9:11AM
@Ithilis
Well, Xbots seemed to sing a different tune when Assassins Creed was announced as a PC title.
Thing is, by PC standards, consoles were supercomputers and are now obsolete. The PS3 had the best processor and the most powerful graphics chip. What is is now? Not the RSX, thats for sure.
So, While I agree with your "not everyone can afford a supercomputer" statement, it isn't necessary to buy one if you are going to play ports of games built for obsolete computers.
To paraphraze Yhatzee from Zero Punctuation,
"To PC gamers, Bioshock is a kick in the balls. Maybe a gentler kick in the balls than most; an extremely pretty, well executed kick in the balls with all of the best intentions, but at the end of the day you're still walking funny."
So, to conclude, to play a 360 game will only require the makings of what would be an excellent computer two years ago. I could go out and buy a two year old alienware for $600 and not only run my windows apps, but the same linux apps my PS3 runs. AND it would run most 360 games. And System Shock. And DeusEX. And Kings Quest Collection.
Sauvage @ Sep 24th 2007 9:43AM
I was expecting more price drop news :(. It seems Sony are happy to just coast as they are selling consistently around the 70-90K mark world wide. As more games come out, this will undoubtedly increase. So they just sit back and let the momentum carry them through without any sales spikes. I hope the strategy works.
Ithilis @ Sep 24th 2007 9:49AM
Kattleox -
Thank you for focusing on one of my statements and ignoring the others.
Like myself, I know several people that, yes, could afford an excellent computer (I bought a PS3, a 360 + HDDVD Drive and have 4 controllers for each) but have no interest in doing so. Why? Because my 56" 1080p Samsung TV is a lot nicer than my 20" ViewSonic monitor. The only games I would consider for PC are games that allow access to user created content, but UT3 is looking to change that paradigm.
With my consoles I have the pleasure of a massive HD television, surround sound, and, most importantly, I can sit on comfortable furniture amongst my friends, playing the same game. If I'm playing the game over the net, on Live or PSN, I still have most of the same luxuries.
But this is all besides the point, as I understand that my preferences differ from others. But I do feel that if you're going to make a comparison between the two consoles, it should be an objective comparison. If not, I can argue many things.. like my previous point about PC exclusives, or why the Wii isn't present in this comparison.
TheSh0wstopper @ Sep 24th 2007 9:58AM
"Because my 56" 1080p Samsung TV is a lot nicer than my 20" ViewSonic monitor."
Im not familiar with that model but I am pretty sure it has a VGA input. Actually thats so prehistoric... It should have a DVI input. Just use that. And the picture will look better than it does on the 360. As anyone who has both systems will tell you The PS3 (and PC) have a "SHARP" picture and the 360 is somewhat "BLURRY" compared to them. I hear people say that it is because of the anti-alaising.
Speaking of Anti-Aliasing someone needs to teach Bungie what the hell that is. They should all be fired for releasing HALO 3 looking like complete shit. I swear those graphics have no business on a next gen system, epecially for such a huge release. The map from Halo 2 Zanzibar (for somereason its called something else in Halo 3) with the big spinning windmill in the middle looks like complete shit, I actually think it looks better in Halo 2. The game is a jagged mess... but it sure is a lot of fun though, thank God graphics is not all that matters.

I have a hard time understanding why folks would be too involved in TGS. Unless you live in Japan, it's not much relevant really, but I do acknowledge that my tastes don't warrant paying much attention to trade shows. (Unless a game is thought to be less then 3 months away I rarely pay any attention to it, and game schedules slip so often it's hard to know for sure if it's less then 3 months off.) Besides, so much about these trade shows is only designed to fuel the hype machine. Impress the press enough and hopefully they'll get us talking about their products. One thing I never really understood is why there aren't more consumer-side shows. (And why the consumer shows out there are still struggling.) One of these years I'd really like to go to PAX.
Jonah Falcon @ Sep 24th 2007 10:13AM

I have two PCs. My gaming rig (SLI 6800 GTS (wish I could have affored GTXs) E6750 w/4GB Corsair Dominator) sitting in my living room hooked up to my 52" Sharp via DVI. I feed the sound to my Logitech 5500 over SPDIF and run at 1920x1200 with AF/AA through the ass!
This in the end blows away my PS3 and 360, the Wii can't even compare. In my office I have a standard run of the mill PC for the usual (E-Mail, YouTube, and Word Processing). Why wouldn't you want a PC in your living room?
I played Bioshock on 360 and then on PC, doesn't compare. DX10 kills Bioshock for PC. And I agree with someone's earlier post - bout it being a kick in the balls.
I've been PC gaming for years, as well as consoling. I owns consoles for RPGs, Action/Adventures, Side scrollers, etc and I PC for FPSs, RTS, and MMOs.
You don't need a high end rig for PC gaming. My old system runs Bioshock on Medium (7800/P4/1GB) and thats the equivalent of the 360.
And for Halo is, without a doubt, the consolers Counter Strike. I've said this to many people and I'll finally say it here. Look at the Counter Strike craze and you will see it is identical to the Halo craze, well minus the marketing money MS throws at Halo.
Forge? Please. You guys enjoy your Forge I'm sure many people have NEVER played on custom maps with user content before - oh wait I have since Doom1/2.
You guys read a lot of the Halo 3 scores? The games storyline is short and from what I gather incomplete and the game scores 90%+? What the hell? I don't get it.
Crap, back to work.

Because I already have enough furniture in my living room that accommodating a computer desk + computer would be awkward, and I already have a home office for that purpose anyhow.
But like Kattleox, you missed the point of my initial post.
When making a comparison between the two consoles, it's only fair to remain objective. That is to say, strictly compare what one console has and the other does not. I don't care what is also coming out on PC, because this comparison exists within a vacuum that does not include the PC. Games like BioShock and Gears ARE exclusives in the console market, because only one console has them.
Is Unreal Tournament 3 being a timed exclusive for the PS3 not a victory over the 360 because of it's simultaneous PC release?

@Ithilis
I wasn't supporting anyone's arguement in terms of console exclusives. So you should have first re-read my post and realized I was asking you why you didn't want to have a PC in your living room and offered some support as to why it is a good idea, well for gamers.
As a gamer I have all the platforms. And with that I can choose which game I want. In terms of PC versus console, FPS/RTS I will always choose for PC. This extends to CoD4, Bioshock, UT3, and whatever else in the pipeline. As for RTS, I'll be playing Universe at War on my PC, not my 360.
I'm sure there are tons of gamers who have decent rigs and tons that don't. You can use the console exlcusiveness to support yourself, but keep in mind there are people like me who will just easily say "Bioshock/Gears of Wars/Lost Planet/Two Worlds/Hells Gate London/Universe at War/etc I can get for my PC cheaper, with more user supported content, mods, will run faster, and look better."
As for a desk? My PC sits on the shelf below my PS3/Wii/360. The case is a bit bigger than the original Xbox but it matches well and alot of people mistake it for a receiver rather than a PC. And the shameful part, with all the hardware in it, it is air cooled and still quieter then my 360.
Kattleox @ Sep 24th 2007 7:54PM
@Ithilis
(sorry to single you out again, but Jon there seems to have his hands full)
And we come back to your personal preference. XP and Vista have the green button so you CAN have it in your livingroom. There is an effective alternative; there is no denying that. Besides, I'd rather not have a 360 in my livingroom. (Oh, Snap!)
