Rumour: 40GB PS3 coming says Sky; £299 in UK says CVG
In a (not very) surprise revelation Sky, the British broadcasting supplier, has stated that they expect the fabled 40GB PS3 to be announced this week. They claim that this new model will lack several features of the 60GB/80GB such as backwards compatability (both hardware and software emulation) as well as USB ports. We're more inclined to believe that WiFi would be removed before USBs as some games will require them. Imagine if people lured into buying a new PS3 at a lower price weren't able to play games like Guitar Hero III, Rock Band or anything involving the PlayStation Eye. The price is still rumoured to be at $399, which we've always said would make an excellent low-end price for the system. Elsewhere reports are coming in that the UK will be receiving this new SKU as well and that it will sell for £299. Though all of this information is still classified as heavily rumoured, CVG has been told by multiple sources that Sony will introduce the 40GB model in Great Britain (and, presumably, the rest of Europe) at this price, which makes it around the same price as an Xbox 360 Elite.
To cap off today's rumour-fest, Sony was touted to make these announcements at Tokyo Game Show (which didn't happen) or early this week. We'll let you know what happens.

the fcc website showed the new Sony SKU to have wireless, as per the label was WIFI b certified, so whatever model the FCC is testing did have wireless on it, more than likely they are going to sell these systems at a bigger loss to increase user base 6~ by end of the year.
Solace @ Sep 24th 2007 4:10PM
how could you charge your controllers if they removed all of the USB ports? something sounds wrong there.
also, isn't backwards compatibility done through firmware updates? i don't see how they'd totally remove it for one SKU when it's all software based now anyways.
also, being in the US, don't know much about Sky. i thought that they were just a satellite / broadcast provider. do they sell / have anything to do with game or gaming? it sounds like they're the equivalent to Comcast (here in the US) and therefor making predictions that are way off their base of knowledge.
i'm wondering if maybe they're going from 4 to 2 USB ports and BC is going to be JUST software.
Snpo @ Sep 24th 2007 4:14PM
yah ps2 software emulation is done by the software correct :P so as long as its the same specs it should work just fine (if it takes the same firmware) also if anything i would think they would get rid of the card reader, and yes maybe only 2 usb ports instead of 4? cheaper bluetooth, etc.
Vertrucio @ Sep 24th 2007 4:30PM
I don't see how removing the software emulation based backwards compatability would save them any money. You'd actually have to go into the firmware and OS code and gut the code from it. That process would actually cost developer man hours, so it just doesn't seem right.
However, at the same time, I wonder if that BC removal is something that means removing extra chips that aren't exactly part of the emotion engine (ps2 hardware), but still are required for BC?
In general, these news reports often get technical details wrong so we'll have to wait for an official announcement.
I'm betting on 40GB, no wifi, no PS2 emotion engine as the two most definite changes.
wii last gen @ Sep 24th 2007 4:37PM
i think they should figure out a way to take the blu-ray out of the ps3 and offer it as an add-on. and price it similarly to the wii. of course they would need 2 different versions of each game, but i bet it would sell alot more consoles. i know the ps3 is cheaper than a 360 when taking all the add-ons into account, but they are just that, add-ons and dont NEED to be purchased. if the price was even close to the wii, it would kill everyone else.
i'm by no means an expert on this stuff,i'm sure some of you have reasons why this absolutely wouldnt work but i'm sure there is someway they(sony) could figure it out. i think the price is the main reason it isnt selling as well. the game choices arent quite there yet but their coming.
Mak @ Sep 24th 2007 4:46PM
This is nonsense. If the USB ports are removed, how on earth do you charge the controllers, or pair with PSP?
The fact the USB details are obviously wrong, then it puts the rest of the detils under a shadow of a doubt.
TheWakeUpCall @ Sep 24th 2007 4:45PM
So basically, the 40GB PS3 stripped down version in the UK will be the same price as the 60GB full version in the USA? Yeah, that's fair enough.
Xbox360FB @ Sep 24th 2007 4:47PM
To bad you still don't have any good games to play on the PS3... Better luck next year! Halo will continue to dominate anything Sony brings out.
With your "free" online service you get what you pay for, no unified friends list, no game invites, or anyone that has a mic ever. The PS3 is more like a PS2 with HD graphics.
Also, my iPhone browses the internet better that the PS3.
You do finally get a "last gen" feature back though, rumble...
Maybe Sony should send out more "instructions" on how to play their crappy games (like Lair) to get their reviews up.
Here's to wishing you would have saved money and bought a good next gen system.
Justin @ Sep 24th 2007 4:47PM
what 'games' require USB?
-viper- @ Sep 24th 2007 4:47PM
No USB ports? Surely a joke.
It will definitely feature USB ports. How else would you charge your controller? I'm guessing the media card slots may not be there.
-viper- @ Sep 24th 2007 4:49PM
Xbox360FB, stop trolling you daft cunt. Please get the fuck out of here.
There are plenty of PS3 games out. Just because one isn't called Halo doesn't mean there aren't any good ones on the system. Daft twonk.
Heanvenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Motorstorm, Resistance, F1, and many more games including all of the multiplatform games released on the 360 are on the PS3.
chris.westermann @ Sep 24th 2007 4:56PM
A little dubious about this, I mean, does it really cost anything to support backwards compatibility through software? I can see a cost savings because of removing the Emotion Chip for PS2 hardware compatibility (like on the new 80gb version), but if they are going to emulate PS2 through software anyways it doesn't save a dime to exclude it. Also no USB? USB costs literally pennies to implement so that doesn't save any money and will prevent Sony from making money back from the EyeToy and other accessories.
Lastly I don't understand why Sony feels the need to offer different sizes of hard drives either. Just offer one without a hard drive (which should save around $50) and let people decide if they want to add a hard drive. Heck, if Sony was smart they would even sell a separate PS3 branded hard drive accessory and charge twice as much as what an OEM drive would cost and recoup some money. Why buy even a cheaper 40gb version only to strip it out and put in a 160gb hard drive?
Jnas @ Sep 24th 2007 4:56PM
-viper-, no need to get angry at Xbox360FB. I mean, how else is he supposed to pass the time until his 360 comes back from being repaired for the 99th time?

I hope news of a cheap SKU is true and that its unveiled this week. Anything at all to piss on Microsoft's parade is welcome.
PlayStation is a favorite of mine with Nintendo coming in a very close second.
But the Xbox family of consoles? It's the Fox Broadcasting of gaming. This generation is a two front war for Microsoft and I hope they lose - badly.
Pray for gaming if Microsoft takes over - unless you welcome their "by fanboys for fanboys" approach as well as the gradual PC-ification of the console market.

Pajama Party! @ Sep 24th 2007 6:08PM
@Ruben. I'm sure their are plenty of people who feel the way I (we) do.
I'm sorry but the Xbox bought its way into the party. It was an unwelcome scab that screamed "Me too!" and served little purpose but to divert development resources and exclusives away from the PlayStation 2 and Gamecube where they belonged.
The 360 follows suit. Poorly made trash that seems to serve no other purpose than to unify console gaming with the dead-alive PC market. No doubt an attempt by Microsoft to cock-block Apple, who I'm sure they're scared shitless of at the moment.
Is it any surprise that the three heaviest hitters on the 360 are also appearing on the PC? And that all three are what would traditionally be PC fare?
Microsoft is terrified that as Apple builds more momentum through the success of its "i" line of products that its only a matter of time before serious gaming development starts happening on the platform. And as we all know - games are what bring in the big bucks in consumer electronics these days.
Apple is the only other developer of a widely used (by consumers) operating system in the world - and what happens when Windows (which is about as reliable as a 360) suddenly loses its monopoly over PC gaming?
And don't forget the rumors of a possible partnership between Apple and Nintendo.
The long and short of it is that Microsoft needs to be run out of the home console industry. Their influence brings nothing welcome or necessary to the table.
Andy @ Sep 24th 2007 6:08PM
One way Sony can save money on consoles is to get rid of the nifty PS logo the rotates. I bet that thing costs about 1 cent to make. That would be 5 million dollars saved right there.
Anyone else think Sony is making a profit on PS3's now?

i cant be arsed to read the comments but
1. apart from the fact that removing the usb ports cripples the wireless controllers, why the fuck would they do it!? usb ports = half a penny to manufacture, if that.
2. why the fuck would they "remove" software emulation!?!?!? SOFTWARE!!!! COSTS NOTHING TO INCLUDE!!!!!!!
idiots.
Bored @ Sep 24th 2007 6:27PM
Maybe it would be like the old 20GB model with no WiFi and no memory card readers, added to the absence of the EE.
Popfrogs @ Sep 24th 2007 6:38PM
Man, what a weak trolling attempt. My blood pressure didn't even rise 1 degree.
Anyway yeah, no USB? Wrong. You can't even update the firmware or bond with a PSP without USB, not even taking charging the controllers into consideration.
No Wifi? Fine, we've seen this before, nobody really missed it, and if they did, well they forgot to do their homework before they bought it.
No EE/PS2 support? In the future this won't matter so much. Although if it's all software-based, it costs the PS3 nothing, so it's a strange omission.
I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on this. Anyone even remotely familiar with the PS3 wouldn't have mentioned deleting USB ports.
DownwardMonkey @ Sep 24th 2007 6:51PM

You made great points.
MS stands to lose on the following:
Mobile Phone OS (iPhone)
OS [Admit it Vista is still broking!] (OS X)
Home Entertaintment/HTPC (iTV)
Online distribution/Marketplace (iTunes)
HD-DVD (Blu-Ray)
PC Gaming (OS X getting better at running video hardware, thus gaming be possible on Apples through Parallel)
Console Gaming (Wii/PS3)
And note, if you look at all the sales, Microsoft is losing money on all sides except for Software (not operating software as all money earned from XP sales have been lost to Vista R&D) such as Office and third party support.
I said it at another forum I spend tons of time - Microsoft might crumble within the next decade or two.

Wow, what an elitist attitude you have. Since you seem to fancy yourself such a gaming 'purist', did you feel the same way when Sony joined Sega and Nintendo in the gaming market and ultimately forced Sega to collapse it's hardware division?
I may be biased, because I own all of the consoles, but the more the merrier. Competition is a good thing because it breeds innovation. You may say that with Microsoft controlling the market, we'd get saturated by FPS games, or PCesque games, but when Sony controlled the market with the PS2, we were oversaturated with JRPGS and God of War clones. Now, most of us love JRPGs, but not everyone shares our enthusiasm.
And I think it's hilarious that you claim that the original XBox took development resources away from the PS2 and Gamecube, "where they belonged." The PS2 was great, sure, but the Gamecube angered most developers because Nintendo forced them to use yet another proprietary format: the mini-DVD. It wasn't a cartridge again, at least, but it still sucked. They were honestly lucky that they had any 3rd party support at all.
The original Xbox cemented the importance of a harddrive and a robust online service in the console market. Sony tried both with peripherals for the PS2, but failed horribly. The PS3 benefited from what the Xbox brought to the market, certainly.
The fanboyism just never stops on these websites, but I suppose the sites are named that way. I don't understand why so many people have to 'hate' on one console or the other. Like I said, I'm probably biased because I own them all, but I'm also a gamer. I love games. Simple as that.
Look at the holiday season we have coming and you cannot deny that it's the best we have ever seen, as gamers. This is occurring because the competition has never been more fierce! All three companies are striving as hard as they can to 'win' this generation, and exhausting as many resources as they possibly can. I couldn't care less about what company ends up selling the most, because as a true gamer, I'm the one that really wins.

You are biased - for 360. Every time I see you post your comments are always one sided, in favor of the 360.
You claim to own all the platforms yet made excuses as to why PC-versions of a game shouldn't be used in an argument against the consoles. Well if you are such a gamer you'd openly accept the PC-platform and admit when games aren't "exclusive."
On top of that:
"The original Xbox cemented the importance of a harddrive and a robust online service in the console market. Sony tried both with peripherals for the PS2, but failed horribly. The PS3 benefited from what the Xbox brought to the market, certainly."
Microsoft cemented the need for a HDD so badly that they offered a SKU at launch without an HDD. How does that work? All PS3s come with an HDD and Sony has made it mandatory for developers to use it. MS can't say that for the devs for the 360, not yet at least.
I personally hate the 360 and that is because I am a gamer. I bought the thing and since I got it the only games to grace it have been: PGR3, GoW, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, and Lost Planet. I didn't want any of the port launch titles, and unfortunately I never got to play Perfect Dark.
I'll be playin Halo 3 but the most important factor, to me, has already been called a huge disappointment. I don't want Forge, I want a great finisher for a decent story arc, what do I get? Forge.
Is the PS3 winning? In my book, no. It has tons of hurdles to over come but with the line up in 2008 its looking good.
As I said, for me at least:
PC - FPS/RTS
Nintendo (GC/Wii) - Party games with friends at my house
PS2/PS3 - JRPGS, Action/Adventure, Survival Horror etc
Xbox/360 - ??? 360 can't even get the JRPGs done right (Blue Dragon/Eternal Sonata == GARBAGE!!!)

the thing with the ps3 is that it's all the same hardware, so compatibility is very, VERY easy. we would see a subculture in the ps3 linux world making very nice games for free. it could be the best thing the ps3 has to offer, but alas with the way things are it's not gaining much popularity.

@ Darko:
It's true. Master Chief dies at the end of the game. There's a memorial service at the end of the game which is very reminiscent of the beginning of Saving Private Ryan.
Enjoy Halo 3 - cunts.
Your OS comments are also completely and utterly irrelevant, as your average consumer doesn't know what the fuck Unix is to begin with. Windows and OS X - that's all your average computer shopper is aware of.
And given Apple's huge resurgence in popularity with their related products, its only a matter of time before things start shifting in their favor.
@Ithilis:
Sega collapsed due to piss poor marketing, disastrous decision making, incompetent management, and a rabidly biased press.
As far as you comments about JRPG clones go, 25 to Life, 50 Cent: Bullet Proof, Driv3r, Driver: Parallel Lines, the GTA series, Gun, Total Overdose, and a host of other Sandbox wannabes would like to have a word with you. Not to mention the dozens of FPS and annual sports titles that appeared on the platform. The RPG market grew under Sony's watch from virtually non-existent to established presence. Nothing more.
And as far as what the Xbox "cemented", it does nothing more than bear out my point that Microsoft is only trying to drag consoles into the stagnant realm of PC gaming. Are there features to be taken from either realm that are beneficial to the other? Of course. But Microsoft has taken it a step beyond that - they're attempting to turn one into the other. It's unlikely you will ever see an IP touted as heavily on an Xbox console as those that will ultimately appear under their Games for Windows moniker - because they don't give a shit about gaming. They see a market that they can attempt to apply their own set of rules and boundaries to - no matter how damaging and counter-intuitive they may be.
Say what you will about Nintendo's practices in the late 80's or Sony's attitudes throughout the 128-bit era, but at least both were attempting to operate within the common sphere of console gaming. Microsoft is simply using console gaming as a way to shit in Apple's cereal. And there vendetta against Sony is almost laughable. They're so fixated on rubbing Sony's nose in the dirt that they don't seem to even notice the lubeless ass-fucking that Ninetndo is currently giving them.
So yes, maybe I am an elitist. I prefer Sony and Nintendo's "Volver" to Microsoft's "Stomp the Yard"...and that's how it will always be. One look at Microsoft's marketing and press releases is enough to convince me that they don't care about the console gamer, just the tasteless goons that think the RTS is the pinnacle of gaming evolution.

Like I said, I own both, and love both for what they do. I don't really care who 'wins', as long as I get to play great games along the way.
Pajama Party -
You do make a point about the sandbox titles, but they've become a more universal genre, appearing on both consoles now. My comments about saturation were playing on what seems to be the unique attributes of each console at the moment. 360: "We have great FPS games!" PS3: "We have JRPGS!" Both have the sports, the action adventure, the sandbox, etc. They seem to pride themselves on those two aforementioned genres, however.
Personally, I don't see how defeating Apple could have been the primary focus of the original Xbox when it launched. Granted, there was the Bungie purchase, but that's about all I can see. Personally, I think MS saw that gaming was becoming more mainstream and knew where the money was going to be in the years to come. By the time we reach the next generation of consoles, I wouldn't be surprised if gaming was a more profitable market than film.
In regards to the Wii dominating the 360, it's doing the same to the PS3 as well. Though, I don't consider the Wii to be a fair comparison to either the PS or the 360, due to it's price point and target market. Do Porche and Ferrari CEOs sit around and agonize over Toyota sales figures? Likely not.

I wonder if the Cell processor has reduced in cost yet. According to Wikipedia, they've been manufacturing 65 nm version since March, while the PS3 uses a 90 nm version. A smaller processor might represent a cost savings (possibly requiring less power and cooling.)
Another alternative is that Microsoft started the rumour just so everyone would hold onto their wallets in anticipation of a price drop. :)

i have to agree there's alot of shit fanning goin on here.
i recently bought a 360 because there's like 5 games coming out and are out right now that i waited since launch to play. with VF5 online being one of them.
the PS3 still doesn't have any games that intrest me till next year i think.
i'll get one when that time comes just like every console i've bought. i bought gamecube for Metroid, i bought PS2 for MGS 3, bought xbox for Ninja Gaiden (no not for Halo 2)
wii, i really want one for Metroid 3. but that 250+ bucks could net me some 360 games.
i really dont know why people buy launch systems other than to boost sales. im not a sale booster kinda guy i guess. i just like to play the games.
so jeez, chill out people. there's people starving in...some 3rd world country right now. be glad you have fingers to type with...er somethin...
with all that said. imunna go play some Halo 3. because NO it's not the best game ever, NO its not a PS3 killer and NO the graphics aren't the epitome of next gen....but because it's FUN.
i really hope every multiplayer game from here on out takes a page from it's FORGE and INSTANT REPLAY fuction as they add more..well, fun!

@47: There's a reason they call it Wintendo XP. Gaming is about all that keeps anyone from switching to Linux or Mac these days. But with consoles becoming more powerful and more connected with each generation (the big 2 at least), PC gaming is falling into a rut. Don't believe me? Look at the titles everyone buys every year. No sports games, no RPGS, no sandbox games. Just FPS clone after FPS clone. Look, another Far Cry game, this time with more trees! AWESOME.
I really, really hope PC game makers don't try to dominate the console market. We'll see stagnation capable of breeding 18 billion mosquitos. We'll see dev times take years (Half Life 2 I'm looking at you). We'll see FPS and RTS games...and nothing else. It'll be the death of console gaming as we know it. In my humble opinion, Microsoft is at the forefront of this assault on console gaming, and their lineup proves it. What's their #1 title that they spent 40 million bucks advertising? Yet another FPS.
Oh and to whomever said Sony killed Sega...bzzzrt wrong. Sega killed Sega. It all started with the ridiculous addons to the Sega Genesis. The SegaCD = crap. Sega 32X which would sometimes short out the Genesis = crap. Sega's next try, the Saturn, was a lukewarm attempt and they didn't realize what Sony already knew: 3d was the way of the future. They built the Saturn to do 2d really well, and woops, they left out alpha transparency. This led to most games looking like ass that needed it. Meanwhile Sony's Playstation was doing 2d and 3d well, and it had alpha blending/transparency and everything else needed for the win. The rest, as they say, is history.

@Ithilis: Yes, as a matter of fact I do own an Apple. Two actually (both semi-out-of-date G4 Powerbooks).
I also don't think I made myself clear enough the first time through - I don't think Microsoft initially entered the console market with the intent of blocking Apple's progress. I think they just saw a potential market and released a console that was the epitome of "Me too".
However, that is before Apple products started selling like hotcakes covered in crack. there entire "i" line counters something that Microsoft has a finger in as well. And like someone already mentioned, games is about the only thing keeping your average home computer purchaser from moving over to an Apple.
I think the 360 is as much as anything else, a tactical move on Microsoft's part to try and keep Apple as far away from gaming development as possible. The most hyped games on the system are, not surprisingly, also appearing on the PC. And all are genres that have dominated PC gaming for years (FPS, TPS, WRPG). Microsoft is using the easier market penetration of a home console to market high-profile games which are then moved over to the PC (with significant add ons in each and every case so far). People who don't even necessarily consider such things will aready know names like Halo 3, Gears of War, and Bioshock and think to themselves "Well, if a PC is getting software like this it must be good! Guess I gotta go Windows."
But like I said, Microsoft is so fixated on the looming threat of Apple and their ridiculous vendetta against Sony (who, as far as I know, did nothing to deserve their ire apart from be No. 1 last generation) that they still don't seem to realize that Nintendo is giving them a pants down spanking.
And Nintendo is a more than fair comparison. The market is the same - Nintendo has simply widened it ten-fold. And that seems to be something a lot of people have a hard time coming to grips with.
Nintendo simply needs to play their cards right as the transition to the next-gen of consoles and portables takes place. Moving forward, they're going to have to raise the technical bar on their systems significantly to stay competitive.
They're also going to need to watch out for Sony in the handheld market. It would be easy for Sony to bring a vastly improved follow-up to market well in advance of Nintendo's "DS 2". And in the meantime, they're left with the tough decision of either abandoning a lucrative market in favor of an untried product, or risk being in competition with themselves. It would be the PS2 to PS3 transition in handheld form.
