Japanese PSP Slim launch a huge success so far
We were in the country for the Japanese PSP Slim and Lite launch on the 20th. The above image was snapped on our way to day one of the Tokyo Game Show and we knew then that the launch would prove to be a success. We had no idea how right we were. The PSP Slim and Lite, aided by the Crisis Core bundle released on the 13th, has sold well over 300,000 units in its first three days.
This official number from Enterbrain (via Famitsu) show 326,645 PSPs have been sold, 75,943 of which were Crisis Core versions. We were in Akihabara on the 24th and it seemed that everywhere was sold out of PSPs of all kinds, except for one second hand shop which had two Crisis Core models left. We're intrigued to see how long these sales will go on for; not long is our guess. Where's Monster Hunter Portable 3 when you need it?

That is great news ... wow, just look at today:
- 300,000 new PSP's sold in Japan, and
- The DS has broken 50 million total.
I don't intend that as a DS vs PSP thing, because I'm a big fan of both. I mean it as "what a great time for handheld gamers!" Two thriving platforms!

It's true. If I were a dyed in the wool handheld gamer I'd be taunting the living shit out of console owners at the moment...regardless of their choice of platform.

I wonder if they will sell 77777 Crisis Core bundles for the U.S. when it gets released here. I would really want that.

@ruibing
It's incredibly doubtful. Japanese companies are quite fond of making limited edition systems that no can get outside of Japan(not counting importing sites/services, obviously). Hell, in order to try and get the Japanese market, Microsoft made Japanese-exclusive 360 controller colors.

And unfortunately Sony has been really crappy about releasing other versions of the PSP in the US. With the Slim we get 3 ... the rest of the world gets ... 8?

Meh, give me black or nothing.
I love Sony's shiny black color scheme. "Once you go black, you never go back."
daniel @ Sep 26th 2007 5:07PM
im with larz, the black psp is the best. when will the black slim psp come out with the game, 1gb, family guy and daxter and all of the other stuff in the us?????? i need to kno!!!!!!
KiwiLord @ Sep 26th 2007 5:21PM
Daniel, the PSP-2000 bundle packs are already available. The core system still has a short time to go before being released.
pspboi @ Sep 26th 2007 5:54PM
i just called target and they said they had the new psp in black. anybody else hear about anything like this? i live in america by the way.
pspboi @ Sep 26th 2007 5:56PM
and by the way. why do you think target wouldve gotten it first? and why do they keep pushing back the dates? some people think their adding new firmware, but that doesnt sound to true...
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Sep 26th 2007 8:56PM
I believe the PSP and DS can coexist because they aim for two very different markets. And the PSP is not a failure, it just hasn't been nearly as successful as the DS is (for a handheld too!)
That's all I'm gonna say.

Looks like a tornado drill, but outside.

I bought one. There were plenty at my local game shop.
The slimming bit was what convinced me. Before, we bought one on the original launch date. It wouldn`t turn on. Exchanged it, and the square button didn`t work. Third try and the screen was broken. We gave up.
Knowing this was a new, redesigned model, I figured it was finally safe to pick one up. Not a single problem so far.
(Oh, I`m in Japan by the way.)

Just got my piano black PSP slim at Target tonight in northern Virginia. I think they're out in the wild now...
