PS3 Fanboy review: Heavenly Sword

Sony has recently started up their holiday blitz by releasing three highly anticipated games for the PlayStation 3; Warhawk, Lair, and Heavenly Sword. While Warhawk was released to almost universal praise, Lair was largely met with torches and pitchforks. So where does Heavenly Sword fall? Does it achieve the soaring greatness of Warhawk or is it doomed to languish in the used sales bin at your local videogame store like Lair?
Gallery: Heavenly Sword
When talking about Heavenly Sword, it's hard not to bring up SCEA's fantastic God of War series. From the very first glimpses at Heavenly Sword the comparison has been drawn and while it's not really fair they do share some similarities. Both Kratos and Nariko have short blades attached to chains that they swing about like a Benihana chef on crack, they both have surprisingly deep combo systems, and both games use quick time events (QTE) for cinematic action scenes. Outside of those similarities though, Heavenly Sword manages to create its own unique experience that brings to mind God of War no more so than any combat heavy fantasy-based brawler.
While some people have complained about the lack of depth or complexity in Heavenly Sword's combo system, their issues are largely unfounded. Nariko has three different stances (ranged, speed, and heavy) which changes the weapon she's wielding as well as the combos that she has available to her. The combos aren't meaningless either, it's important to know which attacks stun defensive foes, launches them into the air, or are completely unblockable. And while it is possible to button mash your way through the game, you're in for a much harder experience than if you learn the complexities of the combo system.

Other aspects of the gameplay includes an entertaining and violent counter system, single button fatalities called 'Superstyle moves' (complete with over-the-top cinematics of Nariko gutting some poor soul in a unique and satisfying way), and the aforementioned quicktime events where you are prompted to press certain buttons during cinematic sequences to navigate a certain part of a level or kill a major enemy. While none of these features are particularly unique they help flesh out the combat system and keeps things lively.

That's why it's such a shame that your initial impression of this feature via Nariko's sister Kai's first level. You are tasked with using her automatic crossbow to fend off waves of warriors invading a fort. The learning curve is vicious at first and you rarely get a nice clean shot at the nonstop flood of enemies. It's frustrating, poorly done and obnoxious -- to the point where I almost quit playing. But at least once you get past that level you'll rarely get in the situation where the motion controls annoy you. *cough* Lair *cough*
Graphically, Heavenly Sword is absolutely mind-blowing, ranking right up there with Gears of War as the example of what a next-gen console can truly do. This is easily one of the best looking PS3 games out there right now, if not the very best. The environments are huge and expansive (even though your path is highly linear) and the game has some beautiful HDR lighting effects. The beautiful environments and effects come at a cost though, you will run into occasional framerate hitches and wider vistas will cause some v-sync issues. Neither are horrible, but they're worth noting.

Character models in Heavenly Sword look quite good too, though as you'd expect Nariko and the bosses get the most love in that department. Nariko in particular looks absolutely exquisite. She will go down in videogame history as having the most lovingly rendered belly button of all time. She's also just straight hot, though not in the gratuitous and jiggle-luscious way that Rachel from Ninja Gaiden: Sigma.

As great as the graphics are in Heavenly Sword, and as satisfying as the gameplay is -- where it really succeeds is its Hollywood-worthy story. Written by Rhianna Pratchett, the daughter of Terry Pratchett (one of the most successful and prolific fantasy writers of our time), the story is equal parts engaging, poignant, and surprisingly comedic. Part of what makes the story so engaging is how good the voice acting is. Nariko is voiced to perfection by Anna Torv, lending Nariko the perfect balance of vulnerability and strength.

As good as Heavenly Sword is though, it has one serious shortcoming -- its length. It took me about eight hours to beat it and another two hours to unlock some of the additional content I had missed. Once you've beaten the game you also unlock a Hell difficulty, but there's little reason to come back and play it more than once or twice. And there's the rub, for $60 dollars you get a fantastic game with a wonderful story and some of the best graphics on the PS3, but it's over almost before it begins and that's just a damn shame. Heavenly Sword still comes highly recommended, but its brief length drops its score fairly significantly. Still, even if you just rent it, you owe it to yourself to play Heavenly Sword -- while it lasts it's easily one of the most entertaining games out on the PS3 right now.

A fair score. I would rate it an 8 as well. Yes it;s short but you can easily play it again and have a totally different experience because you use a different fighting style.
And besides the way the story is told is magnificent.
Solace @ Sep 26th 2007 7:40PM
totally agree with the score.
HS, though not a game of "epic length", makes up for it with its "epic scope". i don't know about the rest of you, but i'd rather play an amazing 8 hour game than a mediocre 20+ hour game.
HektikLyfe @ Sep 26th 2007 7:40PM
This game really ruined all in-game cutscenes for me. The Halo 3 cutscenes look and sound like a joke next to this. Heavenly Sword raised the bar so high I don't believe anyone will match, let alone surpass them for years to come. "Negative, we're going down." Oi, if you've heard that in the beginning of the Halo 3 campaign then you feel my pain.
rogue01 @ Sep 26th 2007 7:45PM
i don't understand why Heavenlt Sword is fingered out for a short lengthed game and lose points because of this, while other games like Bioshock and Halo 3 are very short as well & no one mentions this. (though H3 does have online). I think that rating a game should ONLY be based on the games content (graphics, gameplay, sound, story)
T Hancock @ Sep 26th 2007 7:46PM
Thank you for one of the first just and unbiased review of this fantastic piece of game artwork!
Bryant C. @ Sep 27th 2007 2:23AM
forgot to mention that you can ditch sixaxis's motion control if you're not feeling it and switch to the analog stick instead.
sinergy @ Sep 26th 2007 7:54PM
rogue01: bioshock wasn't THAT short.
Random1448 @ Sep 26th 2007 7:56PM
I'm sold! I'm buying this.
pizzanerd @ Sep 26th 2007 8:04PM
I don't know if you should penalize this game that much for its length. The gameplay really is *fantastic* and I would think it was Gears of War length. 8 hours is pretty quick, it probably took me 10-12. You just can't stress enough the quality of the visuals and how seamless it all is together. By giving it an 8 I think most people will think there is something 'wrong' with it. I'd give it a 9 with an afternote about length. It really didn't feel short.
doc j @ Sep 26th 2007 8:22PM
Well, I guess it might be about time to stop putting off buying a PS3. With Warhawk and Heavenly Sword there are now a couple decent/good games out, and at least some more decent/good looking ones in the near future.
Also, I should note that the short length of HS actually APPEALS to me. As a medical student I play maybe 2 hours of games per week, if that.
Stoph @ Sep 26th 2007 8:19PM
8 is a perfect fit for the game. I absolutely loved this game, but finishing it around 6 to 6 and a half hours is just too short. The fact that all the unlockables came out a few weeks before the game's release didn't help either.
For those comparing this game to Halo, Gears, and Bioshock get a clue. I hate the X-Bot but even I understand this simple concept. Gears, and Halo have fantastic online play (supposedly) and Bioshock clocks in around 15-20 hours. 6-7 hours for ONE run through of the game is just too short. Sure you can play it on a harder level, but you can do that with most games too, so quit with the comparisons already.
Fantastic game deserving of an 8.0
Ruben @ Sep 26th 2007 8:31PM
@ solace
I agreed with you at the ps blog and I agree with you now. Depth is better then length. Just like a movie you can have a 4 hour movie full of crap or a beautiful 2 hour movie, you pick.
ruibing @ Sep 26th 2007 8:35PM
It looks like everyone agrees that it is a great game that is just a lil short and need better puzzles. I hope they make a sequel.
ryano @ Sep 26th 2007 8:55PM
it seems that this is the theme for this gen games:
short but sweet. production costs are through the roof, yet there's few people and time to do it all.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Sep 26th 2007 9:04PM
beat gears of war in a little over 6 hours. the story had holes in it. the commercials had me thinking it would be rich in story
(i kind of was sold by the song they had, i did the same thing for KH1. weird :|). the graphics i think was saved on the art style, character models look good, but the opening level to resistance did the same for me too. i guess the gameplay was what won people over but then again gears was a shooter, HS isnt.
proArchy @ Sep 26th 2007 9:09PM
@pizzanerd: I don't understand what you mean by "people will think there's something wrong with it." what exactly is wrong with an 8? are these people who were beaten, and spanked by their parents for getting B's in school? an 8 is a perfectly respectable score.
i guess i just don't understand the mentality of people who think all games that aren't 9's or above are trash and not worth buying, or in some cases even playing. Over on IGN Heavenly Sword got a 7 (i thought it was a bit low) and every other comment on the review board was about how "Sony was doomed!" or "Thats the final nail in Sony's coffin" or worse. One hyped game with only decent reviews isn't the end. This game accomplished things that some shallow people will never get to experience simply because its not an average rating of 9+
Trev @ Sep 26th 2007 9:13PM
I'd give it an 8.5 (as much as I love it, 9 is really reaching for a combat game like this), but I really enjoy the combat. I always felt like I could take out enemies in cooler ways, which was inspiration to try. That and the final confrontation with Bohan, the setting is amazing and the variety in his attacks, while somewhat patterned, is very impressive. He does basically everything an enemy does before that.
The length of the game wasn't an issue for me, even if I did want to play more of it. It has good pacing that's appropriate for the story. It never felt like it was dragging, and I give it more credit for never making me say "Isn't this part over yet?" than for being longer, however enjoyable it was. Do I want it to be longer? Yes, but not at the cost of slowing it down.
kmo @ Sep 26th 2007 9:14PM
This game absolutely blew me away in every way, its a masterpiece in my opinion, the length kinda sucks but it just didnt get to me that much because the rest of the game is just that good.
I loved the graphics especially in part 2 of the final bohan fight, my jaw literally dropped, brilliant game that everyone should play.
John @ Sep 26th 2007 9:51PM
This is a great review, and I am very glad that Colin brought up the feminine/sexuality issue, because I feel this is a very strong feat of this title.
I personally like shorter games. It will take me at least 20 hours to finish this. If it only took me 8 hours I would play it again and again, just to enjoy the story and graphics. I like games that I can play from start to finish in a short time, like reading a book, but even 8 hours is too long.
So I'm glad I rented this from Gamefly! (It hasn't been sent yet, because it's so low on availability... oh well, Skate's in the mail!)
Eric2929 @ Sep 28th 2007 8:32PM
A tad late on your review here, however I agree it's an 8-8.5.
Matt B (SDF ) @ Sep 26th 2007 10:28PM
The graphics are stunning. It was the most fum I've had in a long time on a console. The flow was great and mostly non-repetitive, until the boss battle hordes came in. But it was still fun to beat them. To me, whoever beat this in 8 hours is a wiz or they didn't make it hard enough on the first round. I know I'll be playing this longer than 8 hours. I'll also let a few of my friends play this. It will sell systems to a few of my friends anyway. This game is a must have AND KEEP for any PS3 owners library.
I'll give it a 9.3 based on the OMFRKINGOD factor. If you have to knock a beautiful game on the length it took you beat it to unlock a harder version, why are you knocking it on unreplayabiliy?
Even HALO 3 is too easy and short to play SP on normal, that doesn't seem to get the knock!!! WHy HS?!?
Mike M. @ Sep 26th 2007 10:41PM
The problem with the game is that when you finish it... it's pretty much over. As far as the unlockables go, all of the animes and featurettes are (to my knowledge) identical to the ones released on the PSN. While I enjoyed playing through the game (over the period of a week), there isn't anything compelling to make you replay it once you beat it.
If only they'd done some unlockable costumes or characters, it would have made another playthrough worth it. The only unlockables I've missed are in the art gallery, and frankly... *shrugs*
mccomber @ Sep 26th 2007 11:22PM
I'd give it at least an 8.5, because the length is truly the only thing I can really fault it on. I know this is a game that I will pick up again several times in the future, just to play through again... much the same as Gears, it's like a great movie, where knowing the end it's hurtling so quickly towards isn't nearly as fun as the trip.
Not once did I wish it would just hurry up and get to the next chapter, or that a section had been omitted; not something I can say about almost any other game I've ever played.
And, as HektikLyfe said, this game ruins most all other cutscenes. Halo3 is truly painful to watch after playing HS; it's like everyone is made of plastic, with voice work and writing to match.
Ben @ Sep 26th 2007 11:35PM
No one complains that a bad game is too short.
red996 @ Sep 26th 2007 11:40PM
The gameplay time time was just fine with me while playing. But its true that once you finish you want more since the experience was so great.
Also in thta final fight with Bohan I finally learn how to master the combo system and parring. I can't wait to replay it with my new comb at skills.
About the sixaxis. This game sold me on the motion sensing. I always turn it of in all games after trying it. Once turn it of in this game and started using analog sticks I realized my control over the cannon balls was not as good. I re-enabled the motion sensing and it amazing the amount of control I gained over the projectiles. Good job Ninja Theory!
ScottW @ Sep 27th 2007 12:42AM
I enjoyed it. Yeah, it seemed a bit short, but you run through it once, unlock "Hell Mode", and do it again - which naturally takes longer as it's quite a bit tougher.
I loved the storyline, the voice talent (especially the voice for Kai). I thought Serkis went a little over the top, but hey, that's Serkis for you. :)
I was also impressed with just HOW damn MANY enemy soldiers could be tearing around at once, without frames dropping, etc.
Multiplayer for this game WOULD have been sweet... but, alas.
Kxpuc @ Sep 27th 2007 1:16AM
anyone want to give me clues/hints/1 up mushrooms o how to beat the Raven King? can barely get him down to 1 1/2 of his life bar's before i die
Ian @ Sep 27th 2007 3:18AM
$60 for a PS3 game! WOW! That's an absolute bargain when you consider that games in England cost up to £49.99 (£50 for argument's sake), convert that on the currency market and games in the USA should be up to $100!
Now, what's the balance here? Are us Brits getting ripped off with extortionate prices or are the Americans getting a bargain?
B1gC72 @ Sep 27th 2007 3:31AM
i still havent gotten this game yet (dont want to get it when all my professors are throwing test and papers at me at the same time) but i think i will probably either rent it or wait til the price goes down. since i generally dont replay games, and it is a short game, i cant see paying $60 for 8 hours of gameplay.
xdeathxrebirthx @ Sep 27th 2007 3:55AM
I almost didn't even pick this up after seeing some what I thought at the time, mediocre screens and videos and a demo that Sony should not have released (it really did not represent the game at all). I ended up beating Bioshock quickly (about 10 hours), so I had nothing to play until the Haloz came out (which I am underwhelmed with).
Anyway... Seriously, best game I have played in a long long time. I had so much fun with it. Great story, amazing graphics and the character acting was just unbelievable for a video game.
I would have to rate it just a bit higher personally. At least higher than Bioshock or Halo. I give it a 9, and it definitely should win Game of the Year, but sadly it won't...
proArchy @ Sep 27th 2007 5:36AM
@27 - well said! i've noticed that video games are one of the things that seem like more of a bargain in the US. Box office tickets, and dvds translate to the same price, but new games are freakin cheap in comparison here in the US... strange
JKPierce @ Sep 27th 2007 5:51AM
Reading the review, I couldn't help but note, "That's exactly what I've been saying."
And it's entirely true that no one wishes a bad game to be shorter. The concept of throwing even more enemies at Nariko or Kai to lengthen the experience would be noted for its cheapness (or even backtracking, as per some recent triple-A title). No doubt it was a conscious omission, and one of which I'm glad.
On the other hand, Metal Gear Solid had a bit of backtracking 'n I beat that in six hours, cutscenes included.
Martyn Brook @ Sep 27th 2007 6:34AM
The demo put me off this game, not only was it 5 minutes short but in that five minutes you got to press a button when a big icon appeared. Reminded me of the control you had in dragon's lair.
I think a poor choice for the demo.
finelicker @ Sep 27th 2007 7:21AM
Sure, I agree that the game is one of the best on the PS3 right now, but thats only because there's sod all else, I bought this and took and back the next day. I've never played a game that made me fall asleep, this one is the first. The cut scenes are beautiful, however they aren't rendered realtime, just check the video unlock section for proof. They are all video. Pacing is messed up, Kai's sections are stupid, fighting mechanic is messy, frame rate is questionable.......Ok, I'll stop there, this game just gets me on a soap box full of dissapointment. The problem I suppose is its a victim of overhype. Oh well, early days, The PS3 has still to bust out the big guns.......
LW @ Sep 27th 2007 7:56AM
I thought the game was fantastic, and I will stand here and accuse the reviewer at IGN of not playing the game all the way through. They complain about the Sixaxis (which is easy to get the hang of after a few tries and works well), but they don't mention the amazing Kai missions that come up later in the game where you're hanging upside down from a busted cable car picking off enemy crossbows from a distance. That's literally THE coolest action play I've seen in a video game, ever. The guys over IGN also said there were only 3 types of enemies when there's at least twice that from my last count, and each boss battle is entirely different requiring different approaches. And the battle at the end with Bohan is NOT beatable through mere button mashing, you really have to master literally every aspect of the combat system if you're going to beat him (and you have to beat him 3x too, it's very challenging).
I honestly don't know what people are moaning about. I'd give the game a 9, since the challenge of the game and knockout graphics/storytelling more than make up for the (semi) short duration. I took me LONGER to beat HS than to beat Gears of War, and the boss at the end of Gears was much easier to beat than Bohan. Nariko could whoop Markus and Master Chief's butt without even breaking a sweat.

Ithilis @ Sep 27th 2007 7:57AM
What kills me about the length of this game is the interviews I have read with the developers stating that they worked as they could to put all the extra/unlockable content into the game, completely filling the Blu-Ray disc. They even went as far as to say that they had to sacrifice some of the extra content in favour of other, more popular items.
If this content was going to be released on PSN anyhow, and fans of the game would no doubt download it, why even bother putting it on the disc when you could have added another chapter instead?
Ithilis @ Sep 27th 2007 8:04AM
Also, why do people keep comparing this game to Gears? Sure, Gears was short, nobody is denying that, but it also has a multi-player mode with 4 game types and about 15 well-crafted maps. Multi-player adds replay value, and if HS had a multi-player mode it would have scored higher, just like Gears.
Popfrogs @ Sep 27th 2007 8:59AM
@37: They're comparing it to Gears based on 1. popularity, 2. sheer graphic quality and 3. overall quality. Plus Gears is also really short. Before Halo3, that was Xbox's huge title.
When you compare race cars, of course you will always mention an AMG Mercedes against a BMW M series, not their more pedestrian models.
@the brits whining about game prices...your currency is overvalued at face value and undervalued in the market. That's why you pay double for everything we get in the US and Japan. That and you guys might have some kind of insane tax structure that enforces huge import tarriffs.
psocrates @ Sep 27th 2007 9:04AM
umm now i dont consider myself that great at hack and slash games but i had a bit of an shock when 12 hours after buying this game i had clocked both normal and hard modes and although the story is cool as are the graphics the loading times seemed quite long especialy given the 1.2gb install 7/10 (rent it first for a weekend)
Popfrogs @ Sep 27th 2007 9:44AM
Forgot to mention earlier: great job on the writeup, it seems really fair, balanced and well-written.
Also for everyone saying it's short, the developer has already stated that expansion packs are possible, if there is enough demand (read: sales).
Justin @ Sep 27th 2007 11:09AM
kxpuc...
its VERY simple.
although it SEEMS like one of the hardest battles...its actually the easiest. once you learn the strategy.
COUNTER.
1) stay as FAR away from raven king as you can. simply run as far away as possible at all times. This will cause him to throw 'BLUE' or 'ORANGE' orbs at you.
2) If he throws 'BLUE', wait until the VERY SECOND it hits you, and hit TRIANGLE. Nariko will send it right back at him and he can't block them. he can DODGE them.. (which he'll do a few times) but for the most part, its a direct hit with MAX damage.
3) If he throws 'ORANGE' do the exact same thing, but in POWER stance. (hold R1, then the second the orange orb hits you, hit TRIANGLE). Nariko will also send it right back at him.
there are 3 different stages that you have to fight Raven King one after the other. But this strategy will get you a victory 100% of the time without getting touched.
The most important part is STAYING AWAY FROM HIM!!!
it FORCES him to throw those things, instead of you going up against him hand to hand (in which case you won't win)
hope it helps.
Justin @ Sep 27th 2007 11:11AM
oh yea...and after you get his health all the way down, you'll have to RUNNN towards him to do a little button sequence thingy to get him to the next phase of his battle. but other than that, STAY AWAY.
BruteRules @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:10AM
I agree 8 hours is long enough. Some people out here dont like 100 hour games that are just repetitive fight scenes in betweent the story. Sure they could add twice the number of enimies then it would take you 16 hours but for what? I like it when the story keeps moving along. They should not get an 8 for that, should be based on content 9 or even 10 the way the rest of your review reads.
Daniel Almada @ Sep 27th 2007 1:40PM
Guys, be honest... It's a pretty game, but ANY game that you can complete in 6 hours by mashing buttons, has a laughable AI, PS1-PS2 game mechanics does NOT deserve an 8 score... If this game came out next to Metal Gear, everybody would be dissin' it...
UltimateNinja9 @ Sep 27th 2007 1:03PM
I'm glad Heavenly Sword lets you turn off the motion sensitivity. The Wii and the PS3 have made me hate motion sensitivity and it pisses me off when a really awesome game like Lair ends up sucking ass because you're forced to use motion sensitivity. I hope someone finds a cheat that lets you play Lair with joysticks (and no I don't want to play it on the PSP screen either).

You can't complete it by mashing buttons. You have to time your defenses and attacks and use the right ones. You're the first one I've heard that says HS's AI is laughable. How is it laughable? Which part of the game, and which character did you find had poor AI? When I play it, if one enemy is behind me while I'm attacking another enemy, they'll often come at me when I'm vulnerable, unlike actual dumb AI button mashers like Dynasty Warriors, where they just wait around for you to kill them all. In the mission where Kai has to shoot all the guards coming at her in that maze-like storage room, they duck out of the way of your arrows, and will take different paths to avoid them. You call that laughable AI?
And as for the completely retarded PS1-PS2 game mechanics comment, which games on those consoles allows you to steer projectiles with the movement of your controller, eh? What games on those consoles allow you to pick up practically ANYTHING and use it as a weapon, whether it's the body of someone you just killed or a watermelon?
Methinks you haven't played the game and are just talking out of your ass and I also bet you think an ugly white piece of hardware that breaks all the time, scratches discs and doesn't support games that have more than 5GB of data is the best gaming system ever.
Larz @ Sep 27th 2007 3:13PM
I think it deserves more, at least a 9.0.
Graphically awesome, loads of fun, a variable experience (playing as Kai as well as Nariko), challenging, and the unique rating system plus stage selection all add up to an amazing game.
Just to clarify: You can NOT get through the whole game by BUTTON MASHING! You will be able to pass SOME stages, other stages you will likely die repeatedly until you get lucky, and some stages you simply will NOT be able to pass at all. And it's worth mentioning that this is no different case than other games.
Also, this game is NOT SHORT! Average single player console game length (not RPG's) is 6-8 hours. This game should not be docked for this. Many games are much shorter yet receive high marks because they're not for the PS3. Look at Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, less than an hour to complete the game!
Comparing it to God of War, of course it's going to come up short because God of War is simply amazing. GoW 1 & 2 deserve 11 out of 10 in my book.
