Final Fantasy and Metal Gear tag team Japanese sales chart
The relaunch of PSP has landed PSP the top position of the Japanese software sales charts again for the second week in a row. Certainly, this is quite an impressive feat, considering Nintendo's juggernaut control over the region. Once again, it comes as no surprise that Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core topped the charts, with an additional 109,000 units sold according to Gamasutra. A PSP newcomer ranks second in the charts: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, which sold 93,000 units. Considering Plus is an expansion pack for the original Portable Ops, we're impressed.
We hope this PSP sales renaissance continues because the handheld certainly deserves more recognition than its garnered amongst hardcore gamers. We'll have to see whether or not Crisis Core will have the lasting power to stay at the top of the charts.

Can you please stop mentioning FF:CC? I can't stand the wait. :-)

I don't think it matters if the sales charts return to status quo next week - and I predict they will settle back within a could of weeks.
The bottom line is that this has demonstrated that the PSP is thriving and *killed* all the 'PSP iz teh d0med' talk.

I think its wierd that neither Kotaku nor Joystiq really talked about the fact its dominating the past two weeks. On joystiq it got a paragraph. Also, we didn't get Japanese hardware and software charts for last week, or this week. Kind of frustrating considering that these two weeks are a significant shakeup to what is the normal order of things. One would think that to be somewhat newsworthy. I know TGS was last week, but still there was NO time to post it? Considering we got articles about a broomstick controller?

I understand what you mean Brandon. If you look at the hardware sales, the PSP vs Xbox360 in Japan was like 271:1 That would have made a great headline for massive hits and comments. Oh well. What truly matters is that the people are supporting the PSP. If the sales are there, more publishers will see that we do buy games (I own about 10) and put out more gems like this one.

I've said this before - I guess it bears repeating.
Mr. Yoon and some of his associates who contribute to PSPFANBOY aside (as well as a few who contribute to other Weblogs sites), the majority of the editors and contributors to Joystiq and Kotaku DO NOT LIKE the PSP. Whether that's an artifact of anti-Sony bias, I can't really say, but it's as evident as a big letter 'N' on their face.
Their respective bias shows in all types of articles, even those that would otherwise be positive Sony news. It's as though some of these guys are so conditioned to elaborate the negatives that they can't see any news as good news.
So, it shouldn't that Kotaku and JQ disregarded the recent surge in PSP sales. I think some of these guys really not only believe the PSP to be defunct or 'dead' (regardless of evidence to the contrary) - but the WANT it to be.
