Rumor: Sony has 'big bang' announcement Oct. 12

GamePro France is reporting that Sony has plans for a "big bang" announcement set for Oct. 12. While rumors and speculation have been filling message boards across the internet, we feel safe to say this announcement will probably focus on the mysterious 40GB PlayStation 3.

Let's take a look at the recent events surrounding Sony's new model:

We'll, can't be happy enough for Oct. 12 to come so we can finally get some real answers, but who knows, Sony could announce a new JetMoto game, right?

Hopefully a cheaper PS3 isn't just in line for the USA, there should be one made available in Australia as well

I really really hope its a cheap PS3, I already have one myself and it would be great for the world to know what is to like about this system.

Oh, and I am also hoping they would announce more games coming soon. That would be so cool if they announced more games. And a Jet Moto PS3!!!

I hope it is a price drop as well. I wonder why they chose to do it after Halo 3. Was it to wait for the buzz around it to fade away and then evaluate on the aftermath before breaking out the news? Anything new coming out for the PS3 in October besides Ratchet & Clank? Best of luck Sony! Don't mess this one up.

I hope it will not just be the new PS3 system. But some thing bigger. I hope it is the game Famitsu talked about right befire TGS. So I hope it is a FFVII remake. I know it would have had a better chance at TGS but if you think about it FFVII should have all the glory to it self.

Plus with some many things bad things as of late for Sony like the delay of Home and rumble not coming out until next year. I hope the news is not just for this new SKU. So I hope it is some new games plus other big news too. May be it will be the day Sony will say the Killzone Beta will start.

So I hope there will be some thing other then the new sku because for me I already own a PS3 so in no way will this news help me. Like a big line up of new games for 2008 and and beyond.

Isn't the announcement spoiled by now? Why do these companies keep fighting these leaks. The 360 Elite, the PS3 price drop, PS3 rumble controller. Now the 40 GB. I understand there's a plan to all these big announcements, but maybe they should change plans when these leaks happen. It just makes the companies look silly.

That would be awesome if they introduce the 40GB at $300. It would be fantastic. Even if they introduce it at $400 it could still be beneficial for them. But I guess the $300 remark I said is asking for a little too much. But hey it saids "Sony has plans for a big bang announcement". Therefor it should be something big. I guess all we have to do is sit and wait. Lets hope for the best.

Not sure the Silver or White versions of the PS3 would help sales all that much...but I know a lot of people liked the silver version.

I still want to know what features they could remove that would make it possible to sell the unit at a great savings over the 60-80 gig models. I guess wifi being removed is a given, but what else could they really remove that would save much money....usb ports and memory card slots, I can't see that saving all that much money (per machine).

I don't want another model. I want 8DAYS and The Getaway 3. Wouldn't it be funny if those were the big announcements. (In my books those would be better than a new model)

what if its the wiisation 360 all 3 companies joining forces to bring the gaming world to a new era. where mario and master cheif can live in playstation home. lol no j.k long live the console WAR. Sony has alot of tricks up its sleeve. dont count the juggarnaut that is sony out. my guess is a 499.99 40g Ps3 bundle just in time for christmas. dual shock 3 included. and official game release dates.....AND ps home dated... BIG BANG theory

As long as they don't remove the wifi, they can remove as many features as they want. I think a 40GB hard drive is plenty for my needs. I would probably get an external controller charger, anyways. I'd never use card slots. The PS2 emulation is good enough for me. So really the only thing I need to see in this new model is wifi.

Halo 3 is obviously being ported to PS3. That'd be a big bang right in the nuts.

It's not so much the new console is actually cheaper for Sony to make (it will be, rumor of 65nm Cell, no EE or GS for ps2 games), but that it will allow them to sell it at a lower price (at a greater loss for Sony) without pissing off early adopters too much. If they just dropped the price of the 80GB by $200, there would be much... unpleasantness from people who just bought one.

But if they take out a couple USB ports and the memory card readers, people who paid a bunch more for their ps3 can still feel okay about their purchase (maybe not great). And Sony will just take the extra loss like they did with the 20GB. Hopefully this will be a real model and not just a token to make it look like the ps3 was launching at $499, even though no one could find one.

It may have been leaked, but canceling a press confrence would be stupid. How do you think teh rest of the people in the world find out about these things, not everyone looks for leaked info on the internet.

If sony droped the price of the ps3 without really makeing any modifications to it, that woudnt really bother me.Its just the way technology is, you pay a high price for getting it before anyone else. I have had mine since January and I very happy with my purchase.I always expect for prices to drop soon after you have bought something. If you look at pc hardware, you could pay 400 for a top of the range graphics card and then only find 6 months later its going for cheap.Anyway the price drop is a good thing, becasue as soon as the ps3 has a decent user base then we will start seeing games been made for the ps3 and all the crappy ports going to other systems.

Why does everyone always mention Halo 3? I've never had an interest in the series, I tried it and thought "meh, just another FPS but with a sucky console interface". People say it's the online game that blows everything away. Tried that: unimpressed having grown up on PC's--Halo is comparable to the PC online experience of like 10 years ago.

I have friends that are way into Halo and didn't even bother with Halo 3. After playing in the beta test they said it wasn't that great and didn't care for buying yet another Halo.

Is it just because it's the ONLY decent game exclusive for Xbox? I know one of my friends bought a 360 just for Halo 3--and is now upset that he wasted all that money ($400 is a LOT for him).

Honestly Larz, I agree.

Halo gets a good rep due to the fact that it was the first really good console fps that was like Star Wars.

90% of my love of Halo comes from the cool armor design and the chance to change its colors. Other than that, Unreal is infinitely better.
