PlayStation: The Official Magazine hits newstands in November
Last November, Sony announced the discontinuation of the Official PlayStation Magazine, but it appears it's getting a new lease on life as Sony and Future US announced their agreement on a new magazine – PlayStation: The Official Magazine. The magazine, which will initially have a circulation of about 300,000 copies, will arrive in November."We're very excited to be working with a group that is nearly as passionate about our brand as we are ourselves and we look forward to working with Future on many innovative ideas they have to create a best in class enthusiast publication," said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing at SCEA.
Ziff Davis, the former publisher of OPM, continues to battle financial issues, so it's understandable Sony's preference to find a more reliable company in Future, which has continued to publish OPM in Europe. Additionally, when Sony made the announcement last year, it said focus would shift to delivering content via PlayStation.com and the PlayStation Store, so we wonder what spurred this change of heart.

PS3, PSP, and PS2 demo discs will be a welcome addition. I can't wait for it to come back.

video killed the radio star
internets killed the gaming magazine
downloads killed the demo disc

I think they should stick to delivering content via the PS Store (both in terms of videos and downloadables, and information). Would further justify the PSN as a valid resource for PS users.

@6 yup, UK playstation magazine has only demos from the store, and has had resistance 3 times out of 4 discs.
Random1448 @ Oct 1st 2007 2:07PM
yea! PSM just wasn't cuttin' it for me.
schuyler @ Oct 1st 2007 3:18PM

I was a PSM subscriber.. now the independent PS mag subscriber... The thing is whatever news they have I already know about from sites like this and I usually don't care for reviews - just how i feel about the game. Maybe a more attractive cast like a group of gamer girls reviewing or something to attract people. I prob gonna get the 1st issue and check it out but if it is more of the same then no thanks.

The official UK magazine is wasting its time with the disc at the minute as you can get it all on the store - and if you're not online, they keep putting on the same demos every month with the odd new one... which is what the PS1 and PS2 mags did towards the end of their respective machines' lifecycles.
Either they should do something innovative with the disc, or dump it and chop a couple of quid off the price. This all ought to be borne in mind for the US edition too.

I doubt we'll see ps3 demo discs anytime soon: blu-ray discs aren't exactly at the point in their life cycle where they can be mass produced for cheap like dvds... either that, or every issues' gonna be $20 us.
RazielDune @ Oct 1st 2007 6:46PM
Finnally i won't have to read that damn independant fanboy mag. Rise PSM GO!
Gareth Burleigh @ Oct 1st 2007 9:40PM
Shattercross you are aware that Blu-Ray is not needed for a demo. A DVD will do just fine. At current average demo size, a DVD will hold 6-8 demos if they install the same way as a PSN demo.

well as being a brazilian immigrant l still remember my thrills over the early magazines, and the hours l spent translating each page with my long gone pocket dictionary, being fascinated over previews like gta3 ,lco and so on. not mentioning the dvd wich was a good addiction, but today with better resources from the internet, inclusion of playstation store they,re gonna be down to some serious competition

Future? No thank you. Sorry, but from what I've witnessed reading PSM and OXM, I'd take Ziff's old OPM crew (Joe, Dana, Scooter, Tom, and Giancarlo) over anybody that company spits out. Not to say they're not competent writers or anything, but I just feel that the old OPM editors were far more mature in their approach to the mag, and significantly less biased. Then again, maybe that's just me.
Fohamm @ Oct 1st 2007 11:05PM
I was subscribed to OPM as well but ended my subscription when I moved, which coincidentally was close to when OPM died out. However the idea of subscribing to the magazine online, and receiving the Magazine AND vids+demos on the PSN is an excellent idea.

@Shattercross
Playstation can afford blu-ray discs, mass production= cheaper bd-discs bulk is cheaper than retail
Also this is great news that PSM is returning. I wonder if my previous subscription will continue.
