Taking a look "inside" Uncharted: Part 1
Here's Sony's promo-documentary for the upcoming PS3 exclusive adventure, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Watch the team at Naughty Dog talk about straying from the usual grays of other action games, and go for its own style. Expect some heavy pro-PS3 propaganda ... but we don't think you'll mind!
Stay tuned to the historical connection, around minute 4. It's fascinating to see how Uncharted is very loosely based upon historical events. To see how, you'll just have to watch.

I've never really cared for Uncharted, but upon watching that video, it looks quite good, not a must-have but quite good none-the-less
Paul @ Oct 1st 2007 8:45AM
ps3 game of the year!!!!!!!!!
seriously this game is going to RAPE.
Farmz @ Oct 1st 2007 9:24AM
wow, that looks pretty good.
Kspraydad @ Oct 1st 2007 9:32AM
RAPE is a positive verb now?
watcher @ Oct 1st 2007 10:01AM
There is nothing positive about the word Kspraydad. I wonder what drugged up addict started using it that way. It's sad really.
On topic, this game is shaping up to be a great title. Good to know that Naughty and Sony are working hard to make this title one of this year's best. I just hope it's released on time.

I think Paul needs to raped, but yes the game looks quite good.
gibson355 @ Oct 1st 2007 10:36AM
Paul, you would not be so flippant with the term RAPE, had you yourself, or your mother, or your sister, or your wife been a victim. It's a heinous act with repercussions that last lifetimes and generations. Get educated and seek help.
Popfrogs @ Oct 1st 2007 11:51AM
All raping aside, this game looks like a launch-day purchase for me.

I'm reading a blog with children...
Anyway, between this and the big video clip posted the other day, I am VERY psyched to play this one.
HAAS599 @ Oct 1st 2007 4:08PM
paul please explain.....
uncharted is going to force it's penis into the bumhole of other video games?
im not offended by the use of the word rape, but your an idiot.
anyway, this game looks cool its a toss up between uncharted and assasins creed. may have to get them both.
Easo @ Oct 1st 2007 5:58PM
This game does look amazing, but i might have to pass if they cant get the vertical sync right. Right now, it literally hurts my eyes to watch it because it does it so much.
joe @ Oct 1st 2007 6:56PM
considering all the foliage, the hdr lighting, and realistic water reflection and refraction, i bet they still won't have to downgrade the resolution like bungie had to do for halo3. ps3 pizownz
miglaugh @ Oct 1st 2007 8:49PM
Here's an idea, lets all focus on one person's comment and kill the thread. I believe what gibson355 did is called taking things out of context, not sure though :P
For real though, this game is starting to look really good. Lets hope it's not too short, because that definitely looks like a linear game you can only play once while you remember the story. Am I the only one that needs to forget a game before I can play it again?

Sony is really smart to do this, like with the Heavenly Sword stuff. Imagine, there is staff to produce stuff like this. They have to pay for that. I assume MS is doing the same.
I wish they would have given links to websites with clips of what films they referenced.
They could (and should) do this within the game, even the demo. Demos take most people 15 minutes (they take me about 45- ????), so after your 15 minute to 1/2 hour joyride, you can return to the screen and select links, like "movies which inspired this game," "artwork which inspired this game," or whatever.
That's not hard, right? Can you have a live link inside a demo menu screen on the ps3? Is this 2007?
There was a part with fake body motion.
About 3/4 through, he hits this guy down in a melee, and while the guy is writhing on the ground, he stands up and looks into the distance.
He should've been guaging whether the guy would get up, looking down at the guy.
And the engine should further have had that if there were other enemies about, he might glance at the guy, but turn toward the nearing enemies, since they may be a more real threat at this time.
For feel, they are programming essentially by trial and error.
At some point someone is going to make a "feel-register" which records how people expect games to play, people from all walks. Then an algorithm will be made, and it will have the respect of what we now accord, for instance, the Unreal engine, a huge multi-threaded AI that alters itself to the way the player is playing.
This will be around 2012, and this will be the beginning of the 2nd revolution in videogames, not to be confused with "4th gen".
4th gen is where, in 2012ish, we have more hardware power than we know what to do with.
Over the past 4 years, programmers of the leading "next-gen" consoles have been developing "AI" algorithms, not for the computer-controlled avatars in games (by this time we've gotten pretty good at this), but an artificial intelligence that can learn the playstyle of the player, making the gameplay experience more over the top in a way that is increasingly being done.
And the ps3, with it's multiple cells, will be the leader in this technology, but that will only be the beginning. The beginning of the idea, and at this time, nearing 2010, xbox will be pretty good at it, too.
It will not be so much a matter of muscle, as "flavor."
Then the next-gen machines will handle graphics like nothing, so everything will be about how the machine interacts with the player.
We do not have information regarding Nintendo on this point. Nintendo had a very strong showing in the years from 2006 onward, extremely strong.
But they are not telling us anything, so we can only wonder: do they know something we don't know?
By 5th gen (remember, 4th gen is these 3rd-gen machines only with ridiculous RAM and power, realizing now that graphics are a foregone conclusion, the only thing to worry about is AI (physics, also, has been mostly taken care of)), we will see holographic play for the first time (It occured before, but not in your living room).
But in the beginning it will not be able to be coupled with the advanced AI we have grown to love which is why old machines will still sell well.
6th gen is a sort of resting place, an answer to 5th, using near-quantum power to mix hologram graphics with the best AI, on both sides, we've ever seen.
7th gen is indescribable, for now. But many later scholars say that this is the true point at which the war and love between human and machines began. Meaning, literally, war. We've always loved machines, we've always hated them or attempted to improve them.
Now we are at war with them. But that's just Animatrix stuff.

The use of the word "rape" is inappropriate.
Remember, guys, when you get raped?
You get raped by a GUY.
