Sony: No 'big bang' announcement on Oct. 12
Oct. 12 is a date we've all had circled on our calendars for the past week, ever since GamePro France reported that Sony had plans for a "big bang" announcement. But now it appears that Sony has no such plans at all, according to Eurogamer. The site contacted Sony and was told it never announced an impending announcement in the first place and has no such announcement planned. However, this could be a ploy to lower gamer's vigilance while Sony sneaks in and punches us in the gut with the $399 40GB PlayStation 3 announcement.

They probably don't want a repeat of PSP sales when slim was just around the corner.

There was also the recent and swiftly removed article-ette on the UK PlayStation website which mentioned that GTA IV was 'now finally on the horizon' and the pointer to an October release.
Seach for 'GTA IV'

Was this article and the October 2007 release date a slip by a Sony person who -
1. Didn't know they should keep quiet until 12th October to publish this announcement?
2. Doesn't know about the more lengthy delay of the game?

I'm not surprised that SONY would deny this. It's in their best interest to keep things as quiet as possible so that people keep buying the current PS3's in stores. The worst thing that can happen is that people start expecting the announcement for the 40GB $399 model and then retailers are left to suffer with inventory on hand that they can't get rid of.

@2. So I'm not insane? I did read the other day that GTA was coming for the ps3 in october? I thought I saw that but since have seen no mention of it.

Sony: "Hey guys we have a secret announcement!"
Public: "You mean about the 40 GB PS3?"
Sony: "Announcement? What announcement? Who said announcement?" (...slither away)
Neil @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:30PM
I don't think it would be GTA, with it not being an exclusive anymore why would Sony go out of there way to make a big announcement about it? The 40gb PS3 seems more likely to me and maybe even a Gran Turismo 5 Prologue release date, but I guess we never know.
HektikLyfe @ Oct 3rd 2007 12:30PM
I don't think Sony and Microsoft would cooperate on a pretend GTAIV delay. Unfortunately I think the delay is real or we would be bombarded with Eazy-E music video style commercials.

#5 hahah you hit the nail on the head right there.
Like when someone lets the cat out of the bag about a suprise party.
"Whaaat? This wasn't a surprise, it...was...we were...just all in this room...and"
"Why are there balloons in my room?"
"..."

I'm tired of all these rumors and speculation. It's just as likely that Sony could be releasing a 200GB $600 PS3. Or a 100GB PS3 with no Blu-Ray for $350. Who knows?! Nobody but Sony.
It's all just speculation, but due to all the rumor propagation, people are believing it and will be really disappointed when it's not whatever they guessed.
It's getting really ridiculous with these announcements of announcements.
Larz @ Oct 3rd 2007 1:54PM
I'd be really surprised if they did release a 40 gig PS3 for $400, considering the 20 gig is officially $450 (although you can find them for 400 pretty easily).
Larz @ Oct 3rd 2007 2:20PM
One more thing: Sony's current marketing strategy is to not hype anything. So denying that they'll make a "big bang" announcement is completely factual. When they release this new PS3 it'll probably just be rolled out without any sort of announcement at all.
Popfrogs @ Oct 3rd 2007 3:04PM
@9: Actually an announcement that they'll release a PS3 without Blu-Ray is completely impossible. Quote me now, this will never happen.
