Star Wars Battlefront week: Jem's impressions

Having not played a Star Wars game since X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and Yoda Stories way back in the day, the Battlefront franchise has, until now, completely passed me by. As a result I had no idea what to expect when I loaded up the UMD. After beginning campaign mode I was pleasantly surprised and bltized through it almost in an entire sitting.
Which brings me to my first complaint: the game is hilariously easy. After I had worked out my personal favourite weapon set up (shotgun and grenade launcher) I never found myself changing it. Normal difficulty is ridiculously unbalanced in the player's favour.
After completing campaign mode and, sadly, lacking any form of internet access, I set my sights to the Galactic Conquest game mode. What followed was a love affair of astronomical proportions (get it? Astronomy? Stars? Star Wars? I'll get my coat ...). Galactic Conquest is a mixture between two of my favourite games - Master of Orion and the board game Risk.

The main problem is that the game mode feels tacked on to the bottom of the Single Player menu. The biggest tragedy being that there is no multiplayer version. Not even in Ad Hoc mode. Master of Orion 2's LAN multiplayer was excellent and that game came out in 1996. There's really no excuse.
This is just one facet of Galactic Conquest mode that feels incomplete. The map remains the same no matter how many games you play - the only thing that changes in this respect is ownership of the different planets. I would have liked to have seen several different maps rotated out, in order to keep the game fresh. Players have the option of choosing between the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire but, in practice, this makes little difference. The commanders that you can hire ultimately do the same things, regardless of which faction you choose. All that really changes is the Hero that you can play as during the game.

The game map is also unbalanced. Out of the 16 available planets, only a handful require you to take part in space combat, with the majority relying on ground combat. While not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your tastes, it can become a bit wearying playing ground combat after ground combat. Sometimes space battles are nice to break up the gameplay a bit.
As for the combat itself, I'll return to a previous point: the game is far too easy. Normal mode is, seemingly, impossible to lose at and while Elite difficulty increases the challenge slightly, it's still too easy to beat. I've played several games of Galactic Conquest and have yet to be beaten at a ground combat mission. This makes the game feel more like a time waster, than an actual game. But considering the "tacked on" feel of the entire game mode, this doesn't come as a huge surprise. This problem would likely be solved by the inclusion of a multiplayer mode. Playing against another human brain would drastically up the ante and make Galactic Conquest far more exciting.
Overall, the Galactic Conquest game mode is my favourite part of Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. Despite everything I've said so far, it is really excellent fun. It's just a shame more effort wasn't put into it. As a bonus feature accompanying the main game, it's fine. But if it were given the limelight and development time it deserves, it could be a successful full game in its own right.

Wow, I wish you guys could do a group impressions or review on every game I'm interested in, this is great.
I didn't know about Galactic Conquest mode until this week, seems like it might end up being my favorite part of the game as well...
lynn @ Oct 4th 2007 9:20AM
The more I hear the better I feel about getting the game. Thanks for the impressions!

This series has been great. I am looking forward to getting this game. Again, the multiplayer aspect I hope is really good.
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Oct 4th 2007 9:44AM

Alien @ Oct 4th 2007 10:05AM

CcoconutBoy @ Oct 4th 2007 10:07AM
This game and the Vader PSP are going to cost me a lot of money. There's so many games for the PSP that are a must buy, and this game and the Vader PSP are the reason I'm getting a PSP in the first place...
These differing impressions have been fun to read, and seeing how different parts of the game are enjoyable has been interesting. Thanks!
Jonas @ Oct 11th 2007 12:02AM
thats just a tad bit disappointing to hear about the ease of normal but the galactic conquest does sound like a fun addition to the game
DMeisterJ @ Oct 4th 2007 10:20AM
This game is going to be so awesome
terrell @ Oct 4th 2007 10:49AM

dbh1973 @ Oct 4th 2007 11:09AM
Thank you for the write up. The more I read about this, the more I'm glad I've got the PSP Star Wars Pack pre-ordered.
XenoPhage @ Oct 4th 2007 11:26AM
Wait, I seem to have missed something here.. How do we get in on the giveaway? Has PSP Fanboy released details on that yet? I'd love to get a PSP-2000...
As for the game, it looks interesting. I didn't really like the PSP Battlefront II game, but I'd be willing to give this a shot..
devilock @ Oct 4th 2007 11:43AM
How do I know if I won?
Saigon @ Oct 4th 2007 11:49AM
The difficulty of the game is disappointing. But it still sounds like a fun game. Besides, online battles should make up for the lack of challenge in single player. :)
NeoRaiden @ Oct 4th 2007 12:07PM
I might check it out, now that I have job! Yeah!
Joel @ Oct 4th 2007 2:33PM
That looks so sick! Thanks for the impressions. You guys are doing a good job covering the game.
DEVILDOG @ Oct 4th 2007 12:20PM
Now this is how you review a game. Not just one person’s perspective, but also an impartial impression by many.
Excellent reviews so far of both the positives and negatives.
GoBob @ Oct 4th 2007 12:37PM
Man, I'm actually pretty excited about this game now. You guys should do reviews in this style more!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Oct 4th 2007 12:43PM
Yeah I'm really liking this series. It's giving us a lot of different opinions of the game, and I'm glad most seem positive.
gumby @ Oct 4th 2007 1:03PM
If I remember correctly the battlefront games for the xbox had thia galactic conquest mode and it was great fun! I do wish that you could use this mode with the multiplayer, that would be great. I wonder if there is a map for multi and single player where you can fight it out as just the heroes like on battlefront II, that was my favorite part of that game. Thanks for the great reviews guys, this game is coming home with me!
Zach S @ Oct 4th 2007 1:10PM
The Galactic Conquest mode is definitely sounding more and more interesting to me... this game has like 3 different games in one! (multiplayer, single player, and GC) This may just make a purchase qualifiable.
LM2007 @ Oct 4th 2007 7:23PM
I love SW: BF games, i own BF2 for PS2 and hope for the vader bundle for psp :)
The review is so balanced and not like "the haters side" that cannot be trust. Here we have pros and cons for the game.
Ruze @ Oct 4th 2007 1:52PM
didn't bf2 for psp have galactic conquest? If it did, it must have sucked because I don't remember it.
biffpow @ Oct 4th 2007 2:06PM
It sounds more and more like Galactic Conquest mode is the real selling point here (at least for me). It really is a shame they didn't do more with that feature. Perhaps they'll release downloadable maps or expansions?
And I haven't heard anyone mention Master of Orion in a review in like 10 years. Major props just for that!
AceSh00t @ Oct 4th 2007 2:32PM
Awesome!! A must have!
bird @ Oct 4th 2007 3:07PM
psp rules!
BigFonnny @ Oct 4th 2007 3:27PM
must have game
MDJ @ Oct 4th 2007 3:27PM
Even though Jem thinks it's too easy, I'm not deterred, for I am by no means an expert player. It'll probably be perfect for me difficulty-wise. Remember: that SWBFRS PSP-2000 bundle would make a welcome addition to my collection!
Warner Young @ Oct 4th 2007 3:49PM
I wasn't that impressed with the game when I saw it at San Diego Comic Con, but based on these impressions, I might have to give it another look.
glasseye @ Oct 4th 2007 4:07PM
Mmmm, star wars game.
I was hoping one of your guys' reviews would compare the galactic combat bit to a classic like MOO.
Joel. @ Oct 4th 2007 4:12PM
Looks like galactic conquest is similar to Jeanne D'arc's turn-based mode. If it's anything like it, thumbs up, because Jeanne D'arc is just great!
raindogtoo23 @ Oct 4th 2007 4:35PM
Can't wait for the Zero Punctuation review.
LonePossum @ Oct 4th 2007 4:44PM
This game sounds much better every review. And how about some details for Vader PSP giveaway please.
CcoconutBoy @ Oct 4th 2007 4:56PM
Tomorrow, do we get the impressions from the Holograms? :P
wonkavator @ Oct 4th 2007 6:12PM

ahhh, the excitement, i've been checking everyday about the contest ='[ where's the rule?
Albert @ Oct 4th 2007 7:49PM
Cool, looks pro. That Vader PSP is especially awesome.
cafecito @ Oct 4th 2007 7:51PM
Oh my. Master of Orion was such a great game. And Xwing vs Tie too. I miss a good ol' space-themed game... be it a strategy or spaceship game (This one sounds pretty ground-based)
tenshi @ Oct 4th 2007 10:03PM
Great review! I had doubts about this game, but now I'll probably buy it!
slydude @ Oct 5th 2007 1:17AM
cool. i want that free psp realllllllly badddddddddd!!!!!!!
steve-o @ Oct 5th 2007 11:15PM
NO MULTIPLAYER GC?!?!? what the lol, on starwars battlefront 2 on ps2 there is a galactic conquest mode that is multiplayer, so why did they leave it out? but it still sounds fun......ish
Kurifurisan @ Oct 5th 2007 4:14AM
I can't wait to play this game and I can't wait to try to win one of those Vader PSPs!!!
sonofnone @ Oct 5th 2007 11:25AM
It's too bad you didn't get to play any multi-player, because that's where a game like this really shines. I remember having the same feelings of the about BFII when I'd finished the story mode and Galactic Conquest. I only ever played with one class and was able to beat the game just fine. When I went online, though, I was really amazed at just how well all the different classes and weapons work together. So if you get the chance go online and see what you think - and then tell us!
jdsharbs @ Oct 7th 2007 12:06AM
Galactic Conquest was one of my favorite parts of the first Battleground games.
Andrew @ Oct 8th 2007 12:56PM
i love Star Wars and i was kinda sad when ever they ended the last movie thats when i started picking up in your games Battle frontI and II so i want to take the chance and thank you you guys rock
hplcman @ Oct 8th 2007 1:00PM
It would be nice if the game were not so difficult, but it's Star Wars, so it will still be AWESOME!!
Michael Downey @ Oct 8th 2007 8:43PM
well neat that "Risk" comes to mind...
Asif @ Oct 8th 2007 3:47PM
"the game is far too easy. Normal mode is, seemingly, impossible to lose at and while Elite difficulty increases the challenge slightly, it's still too easy to beat". wow. you must be a fast learner. i have sw battlefront 2 since the last year and i still have trouble sometimes beating it!!
DJManoloco @ Oct 8th 2007 7:47PM
This game seems like a typical Xbox game, single player is bare but online kicks ass. That's fine though. If you have a good online game then you have endless replay value. I'll wait until the game is released to post my full informed opinion.
McMadden @ Oct 9th 2007 2:00AM
That the Bonus content Galatic Conquest mode was his favorite.
