GAME excited by new PS3 model

"We feel that this is a very positive move from Sony. The price reduction will make it easier for even more customers to enjoy the incredible gaming experience you get with a PS3," said GAME Commercial Director Tricia Brennan. "There are more games consoles available than ever before, and today's price cut means they all represent amazing value for money when you consider the incredible technology and sheer volume of entertainment that they offer."
It's great to see retailers rallying behind Sony, and we're sure the company welcomes the positive feedback as it tries to downplay the significance of the 40GB's slimmed down feature set.

I, even moreso now, am elated to be an early adopter and owner of a 60GB PS3 with the PS2 emotion engine and full BC. Rouge Galaxy, FFXII, Okami, and many more are mine for the taking!
In short, I hope they fix the BC issues if this makes it stateside: if news gets out, $100 won't be enough to pull in prospective buyers.

I dont think its a big deal.. Core 360 users dont have BC unless they pony up for the HDD.. same situation. If they want BC, they can go for the higher end model.. same situation.

@2 Not /quite/ the same. If you get the 40gb, you can't get backward compatibility in the same unit. Ever. You can get a ps2 for the price of the 360's hard drive, or use that to get the PS3 model with BC.
That said. I hardly use the BC in my 60 gig and if you're buying a PS3 to play PS2 games, you're dumb. You can get a PS2 for a quarter of the cost. Buy a PS3 for PS3 games and (here's the part where you need an IQ over 6) don't throw your PS2 away. That simple.

It's a little different actually. Xbox never had the super elite set of games the PS2 had.
I've used my BC on my 60Gigger quite a lot, replaying lots of MGS and GoW titles and whatnot. Its always good to venture back into those days =).

I guess 40GB is for PS2 owners and 80GB is for new comers. I got my 60GB and I'm going to get a PS2 if when it drops to $99.

Well, hopefully Sony releases a pure software emulator in the future for the 40GB systems, their plan all along was to remove the ps2 chips when the software emulator got good enough. Obviously, they need the cheaper system now, rather than when the emulator is running decently. At worst, it's not like a ps2 is hard to find... still BC is nice to have, especially when you can help pay for the ps3 by trading in the ps2. :)

I think this is what happens when they lost Ken Kutaragi and instead have a westerner in a Japanese based company. Instead of quality, they are now shortsighted and care more about the profit margin. Why can't they take the old 20GB and 60GB, replace them with software emulation, and make those the 40GB and 80GB respectively?

Is there anything that the PS3 does that Sony promised it will do?
The 360 arguments about backwards compatibility now are moot. The 360 is going into its THIRD holiday season now with a big pile of new games including Halo 3 and Bioshock. The PS3 is going into its second holiday without a single must have exclusive title.
I'd be hating life if the PS3 was my only console. At least it plays Blu-Ray movies, that's the only reason it isn't gathering dust.

@ kazsayswaht : you know there are people who like to play different stuff than FPS games. Games like Uncharted, Ratchett & Clank, Heavenly Sword etc.
BC is still there but Sony has now given people an option to get a much cheaper model for 400 euro, a model that is perfectly suited for people that already have a PS2 (about 110 million last time I checked) or don't care about BC.
I don't see anything wrong with that, the only people constantly whining about it seems to be a bunch of fanboys from competing systems.
For all the people that wanted the PS3 but also wanted BC they got a 100 euro (or 75 pounds) pricedrop. For a 100 euro more than the 40 GB deal they get BC, an extra controller and two games. An even better deal to be honest.

When you buy a Ps3 your first intention is to play ps3 games mainly not ps2 so, for those that are looking to buy ps3 to play ps2 games it quite dumb I had to say so, if I were you guys just kept the ps2 to play ps2 games and having a ps3 is to play ps3 games. Anyway there are two or three models that are much more attractive to buyer (consumers) and that is 40gb for those ps2 owner who wants to upgrade to ps3 and 60gb (80gb) is for new comers who want to enjoy both ps2 and ps3 games, and that probably the reason why Sony make these SKU and than deplete the 60gb model so they would focus both new comers and ps2 owners

Some people just miss the point...
#15 - You say people who buy a PS3 to play PS2 games are dumb, but I don't think anyone would actually buy a PS3 to ONLY play PS2 games. The option always needs to be there (hardware or emulation) because there is only so much room on your shelf and right now the PS3 is seriously lacking games, but great PS2 games are still coming out.
You also claim that this is for "new comers" when the PS3 really isn't marketing towards new gamers. It's focused on the die hard community whereas the Wii is attracting new gamers. One could argue that most gamers have owned a PS2 (Hell I have 2) so giving them the ability to play all those old games wirelessly on their new console that upscales the resolution on their new HDTV is a big upgrade vs. switching over to the standard PS2.
It's amazing how Sony can do stuff like this and expect to get praised over it. Just to recap the pricing structures thus far...originally there was a 20 gb and 60 gb model for $499 and $599. They got rid of the $499 only to "drop" the price of the $599 months later as a liquidation sale to get them off shelves to introduce an 80 gb (with limited BC) for $599. Now they are introducing a 40 gb with even less features which I'm sure they will advertise as another price drop to trick uninformed buyers. It is NOT a price drop if it's a brand new SKU and you removed features!
I love my PS2 and PSP, but there is no debating that Sony needs to change the way they are doing business. The 360 had a price drop of $50 which was a real price drop. Before and after that it was the same console...you just get it for a cheaper price. I'm tired of people trying to make these kinds of announcements out to be something they aren't.
When someone says they want a price drop...that's what they want. I guess I'll just have to wait till mid-2008 till I finally get a real price drop and I can snag a PS3...

I'm waiting for a more expansive PS3.. one with 2/3 HDMI connectors and a bigger and faster HDD. Especially when Sony is gonna start the PVR service in Europe next year.

with no disrespect to Ken Kutagari his first gen PS2's had a low quality dvd drive, which Sony admits.
PS3 is a quality buid though.

50 USD / 2 years versus 200 USD / 1 year, do the math
And the 360 had no BC, HDMI, BR, multiplayer to begin with. What could they drop anyway?
And for "truth": were you one of those who used to claim how the 360 gave you "options"
Dont like it? buy the more expensive version. I think some of the 115mn who have a PS2 will love a 399 PS3

Sony is a much more honest company when compared to Microsoft
-Microsoft strips all the features of the low end console to make it appear cheaper to consumers
-they charged for $30 for DVD playback on the original xbox which is a pain in the ass to use
-they charge $60 for online
-$100 for wireless
-$200 for hd movie player
-release a console that breaks 30% of the time
And whats sad, is few consumers know this.

#26 - While you are correct in many of your points there are some flaws in your logic which I have to address.
Also try not to look at this like I'm defending Microsoft over Sony because both companies have had their fair share of screw ups. It may seem like me defending Microsoft because your whole post was on Microsoft, but I'll go into my issues with the Xbox 360 after I respond to each bullet.

There are a few minor changes between the Core and Premium console when the 360 came out. The Premium ships with a wireless controller instead of a wired one, a 20 GB hard drive, and a headset which I don't think the Core comes with either but I wouldn't quote me on that. All of the actual system features are identical...just one comes with more of the peripherals which makes it a better investment than the other.

This is true, but the quality of the DVD player in the standard Xbox was much higher than anything else I had in my apartment at the time when I got the remote. I don't know if you import any movies, but from Asian countries many would come over on DVD-9 format discs (essentially single-sided dual-layer discs) which my PS2, computer, and even my standalone DVD player would not read. The only place I could watch these films was on my regular Xbox so I thought it was a good purchase...now to the average consumer I'm sure they would never need something like that and some of the features like the 10x zoom was stupid, so I could see how you would see it as excessive. I personally didn't find it difficult to use though since all you do is plug a little thing into an empty controller port then use the remote. I just left mine in the 3rd controller port all the time.

Technically it's $50 a year, or $5 a month, or $0.16 a day. I think if you pick it up in the store it's $60 because it comes with a headset and usually a XBLA game or two which you don't really need. When you really think about it that isn't that much money for having a stable, unified network that's hardly ever down outside of the scheduled maintenance. I guess this is just a personal preference thing though.

Agreed this is ridiculous. The only upside to this is that it supports all 3 network types: b, g, and n which are basically cheap, standard, and high-end. Still grossly overpriced, but there is one perk.

I like the system being around $400 (now $350) without the HD DVD drive inside. If it was $500-600 like the PS3 at launch then I wouldn't have a 360 right now either and I'd be stuck with my Wii and PS2.

This is their #1 problem. Not only the consoles themselves, but the game discs. Look at Halo 3...people are having issues with discs loading a level on Legendary difficulty when there is nothing physically wrong with the disc. Also other people are having issues with their game saves. This is without a doubt Microsoft's #1 downfall, but hey...you pay for cheap labor you get cheap products right?

In addition to the things you pointed out I wanted to add the $100 20 GB hard drive and $170 120 GB hard drive prices are outrageous as well as the $60 wireless headset. The lack of support for 3rd party products requiring them to have a special chip that will talk to the 360 is more big brotherish than I would like too. There's a lot of people with PC steering wheels/dance pads that would have loved to use their own stuff without being required to buy a new peripheral that is usually bad anyways, but it's just another classic case of greed.
I'm also still a little miffed that Microsoft changed their pricing structures on Microsoft Game Studios released games from $50 to $60 around the time of Gears of War. Lastly the d-pad on the 360 controller is HORRIBLE and so are some of the pricing structures of XBLA games. I'm sorry, but I don't see how an old NES game is worth $5 when you can get 60 games and an NES on eBay for $50.
You are right that most consumers don't know the whole story for any of these companies, but right now I'd have to say the lesser of two evils in probably Microsoft. Now that Sony has been humbled and they aren't taking the approach of "people will buy our console regardless of what we put out" I think the real console war has just begun. Doing dumb things like stripping features that even made their PS2 successful like BC is not a good move though...I just hope they wise up and listen to what their fans want.
