40GB PS3 headed Down Under
After finally taking the wraps of its new 40GB PS3, Sony has now confirmed its new system will also be headed to Australia beginning Oct. 11 for A$699.95. While we're sure this news will overjoy Australians who've been impatiently awaiting a more affordable PS3, there's still no word yet whether they will also see the lower-priced 60GB PS3 bundle like their friends in the UK. Either way, it seems Sony has taken care of the largest regions at this point, and it will be interesting to see what other markets are next in line.

Thats still really expensive. I am slightly confused why it costs so much. Australia is right near Japan/China so it shouldn't cost that much to transport.
If I was in Australia I'd just buy a Japanese PS3 and import it. You save almost $150 bucks.

If you are comparing it to USD, I think it is because the USD is really low right now. I believe the canadian dollar just passed it.

@Andy
Australia has a HUGE import tax on its electronics. don't blame Sony - blame your government for its taxation standards.

@2 what bothers me is although the canadian dollar has just passed the american dollar and its been almost par for quite awhile when I buy things in the canadian store like loccorocco or highstakes poker, they are always slightly more expensive, the console here is also 50 dollars more generally (except the 80gb which is on sale at bestbuy for 549.99) so when talking about the 399.99 40gb in canada I am wondering if sony will do the right thing and make it 399.99 in canada also, or if they will shaft us again with 449.99. Now it isnt sony, its all goods and services in canada, microsoft does the same with with xbox, and pretty much everything is at its old pricing and has not readjusted yet, but they should soon, as every long weekend we are seeing an exodus at the border and 3 hr long lines to get into the states to go shopping at outlet malls in buffalo and watertown NY.
anyways, i just needed to vent. it should be less here!

"If you are comparing it to USD, I think it is because the USD is really low right now. I believe the canadian dollar just passed it."
Exactly. USD is really hurting now. Pounds and Euro are also worth more than the U.S. dollar, so anything thing sold in Europe that is translated into U.S. Bucks is going to cost a lot more to us than to the respective countries overseas.

@3
I'm Canadian by the way. I hope the 40GB will be 400 bucks in Canada. At $400 it will be on par with the Xbox 360 price.
But it takes time for things to change.

Can we get some clarification on what will be available for the aussies, it's getting me very confused.
40gb $699, no bc, no games, available Oct 11th
60gb starter pack, bc, extra controller + resistance+motorstorm, discontinued (available while stocks last), $999 or less - anyone know best place to get a deal
Then the 60gb will be no more in Australia?? Or is there due to be a price drop on this without the starter pack?
80gb model - is this coming to Aus, when, how much, with games, bc - ????
And - do we expect another price drop just after christmas? I'm expecting the xbox to drop again now the gap has closed somewhat

Sony is not shipping the 60GB to AUD for awhile now...what you have is what you'll get then just the 40GB (for now)
