40GB to be released in Saudi Arabia
It seems the 40GB PlayStation 3 is slowly taking over the world, one country at a time. Now that it's headed to every major region, Sony has announced its new system bundled with the Spider-man 3 Blu-ray will soon be released in Saudi Arabia for SR 1,799.
"The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners," said Abdul Kader, marketing manager at MECL. "It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet incredibly affordable high definition gaming and entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners."
Although we weren't aware Saudi Arabians were big on gaming, it's great to see Sony spreading the 40GB love throughout the world.

So wait, am I reading this correctly? Saudi Arabia has a new, cheaper PS3 but North America hasn't had one announced yet?
Hovan316 @ Oct 10th 2007 4:13PM

i haven't heard the US announcement yet!?

@xion
They're saving the best for last.
JackMichael- @ Oct 10th 2007 4:53PM
@ everyone moaning about the US release
they are saving that till last, because it will have to be done carefully. The 360 practically has control over the US, so it will be difficult to introduce the new PS3 without digging a bigger hole in that region.
But don't worry, the PS3 has secured the spot of next gen console every where else in the world, and when i say next gen i mean next gen, not wii ¬_¬

Umm, so when did NA get downgraded to a third world country? We haven't even gotten a freakin DENIAL yet. If this thing is coming to the US and Canada before the end of the year then it's going to need to be announced before the end of the week. Notice how far off the Japan date is. Doesn't seem likely we will get a 40gb unit before them. So 2008 is looking to be the case, if at all.

Ok I am from Saudi Arabic, currently studying in the UK, and I can tell you know, Saudis are hardcore gamers, It's a big industry, the most popular shop which is like game in the uk or gamestop in the US is a place called: Tokyo Games. There are like 60 of the in Jeddah alone, I can also tell you now that the playstation franchise is bigger than xbox, Xbox in Saudi is like Xbox in Japan. No one buys the console. But I guess the main reason behind that is the fact Saudi Arabia doesn't even have broadband yet for legality reasons.. you know: polotics, porn etc. Anyways DSL is catching up so my cousins are all playing online games for the first time: resistence and warhawk

Now 60GB PlayStation 3 is for SR 1,899 With one game = ( 506 US $).
And hear you say the 40GB PlayStation 3 is for SR 1,799 With Spider-man 3 = ( 480 US $).

i'm not from saudi arabia, from egypt actually, but live in america, anyway my cousins used to live there, and gaming is HUGE over there, i mean the economy over there can actually pay for ps3's unlike other middle eastern countries. but somthing that i think will hurt it is the fact that even though the ps3 was there (and to clarify with the above comment about ps3 being there earlier, that was prolly imported) the thing is most of the locals pirate their games anyway for the ps2, so it will be interesting to see what happens with the ps3, will they lower the price of games? or will they figuire out how to pirate blue ray? prolly the second one.

I'm glad to see comments from people in Arabia and Egypt, we never get to hear about how things are over there, and it's cool to know that there are players in the middle east.

well in the Middle East region PlayStation Brand is dominant. I bought my PS3 for $730 now a 60Gb is about $463 + 2 Games + Controller. So it's actually cheaper and you get to choose which region you want.
Europe
Jap
HK
or US

I'm glad to see this coming out. Back when I lived in the mideast, everything Sony released in terms of gaming was gold. If you walked down a street, you're likely to see 5 or 6 stores selling PS2 games/accessories/systems, along with some other outdated systems, like the Sega and Atari. The reason I think Sony never officially released anything in Saudi Arabia was because of piracy. All of the stores that sold Sony systems and games sold chipped systems, that came with 10-20 free pirated games, which in turn encouraged you to buy more pirated games for little over $4.
Anyway, really glad it's being released, better call up some friends and family in the region and tell them it's coming.
Hesham Salman @ Oct 11th 2007 9:14PM
Also, Quick Note:
The PS3 there will be sold out constantly. Why? The wii and XBOX360 are flops there. They don't care about them, they don't have the franchises they like. - Nobody really got into anything Nintendo released, nor did they even understand XBOX360. Most people didn't like the controller, and didn't like the gameplay style. It will also be sold out because of the much higher average pay. Imagine being paid 5-8 times more for the same job as your American friend, with little tax.
