Japan now getting two PS1 updates a month - where's ours?

Another Japanese PSN update consisting of PS1 games occurred today. While we don't normally report on this, some interesting/annoying/enviable news has also slipped out alongside it. Since the PS3's launch the Japanese PSN Store has been updated once a month with large additions of PS1 games playable on both the PS3 and the PSP. From now on, however, the PS1 updates will be coming twice a month.

So where's ours? The EU and US PSN Stores have had very few PS1 game releases. Europe got a few more games added a couple of months ago, but most of those were taken down due to glaring glitches and errors. If the recent list of rumored PSN releases is to believed, then we've got a few more to look forward to this week. Even so, the Japan store has many times more than Europe and the US added together. When is Sony going to realize we want to pay money for old games we never bought the first time around? Seriously Sony, you're missing out on free money here.

I downloaded SotN and havent touched it since day one.. cant really get into those PSOne games anymore. ditto for MK2

I know I was very excited about the prospect of PSOne games that I could toute around on a PSP and play...old classics I never get tired of and new games I never got around too....I am sorely dissapointed in the lack of games available on this end. =*(

Hmmm... still waiting for the first signs that Sony really cares about the American PS3 market. I so want to see the PS3 do well... just come out with one title that's a system seller.

Im F*cking glad that someone has broght this to f*ucking someone's attention.. I have a Japan, UK and HK acct.. I they have a $hit load of PSP/PS3 PS1 classic games.. I dont get it but doesnt Sony want my $$$.. I mean I know that damn company is from their but this is a perfect example of crapy marketing dept that Sony has.. These people dont have a clue of what the the people wont.. Until you raise hell about it.. Especially for someone like myself you lives in a major city (NYC) and travels to work and utilzes his PSP to its full extent.. Wake the F up and smell the coffee..

Yeah, what is the problem with releasing those games to us? Does it cost them more money? WTF?

I think their perspective is, "Don't overwhelm non-Japanese players with old technology, they'll think the ps3 can't do super stuff!"

I think if someone's over to visit and they see us playing a ps1 game on the ps3, we're probably going to tell them, if it's not already obvious enough, "I'm playing a ps1 game on the ps3. This is not next-gen."

Give us ps1 games, already. I don't see why not.

Yeah the whole PS1 games on the PSN thing has been a joke. I thought we were gonna see all the big hitters from back in the day like the original Crash Bandicoot, MGS 1, Final Fantasy VII - VIII, Silent Hill, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and GT 1 - 2 to name just a few. But clearly non of that has happened.

I don't know if its Sony's fault or the game publishers but either way the situation sucks.

#5: You're closer to the truth... Sony obviously wants to sell games, and dumping ps1 games on the PSN is one way to do it, certainly. But how exactly does that help the PS3 as a platform? Great, they've sold a bunch of consoles, but if everyone's playing Symphony of the Night, what happens to sales of ps3 games? And if ps3 game sales are getting hurt because out of print classics suddenly become available for cheap, then ps3 developers start dropping what little ps3 support they already have. For example, Folklore has some budding interest from the rpg crowd, mainly because we're really desperate for something that even remotely resembles a jrpg on the ps3... but if, say, Suikoden 2 suddenly wound up on the PSN for $5 the week after Folklore is released, I promise you there's going to be a bunch of lost sales for pretty much everything else, and Sony gets a measly $5 per copy of an old ps1 game, minus whatever they have to pay to the original developer (Capcom, iirc).

However, there's clearly a lot of room for argument here, and I'm betting that's why Japan has so many more ps1 games than we do.

Why are you being so harsh on someone for making a typo...people's pedantic natures drive me insane. I am very relaxed about typing on forums. I think largely what I type still makes sense.
I believe PSone games are a minor way of bolstering the output.
But they are still money for what is very little development time. I still am not sure why they don't update the 2D in some of these games or smooth the edges in places, but I sincerely want to see more original pieces of software appearing on the PSN. Surely for $20 or less people could create games that exceed PS2 standard fairly easily. Particularly with the advantage HD must have in terms of 2D art....imagine RPGs or Platform games which use only a hint of the machines power but still look great, if they are good they will sell by the bucketload, while also filling a void between large scale releases.

@11: I guess there's a fine line between nicely typed sentences that embody coherence and share knowledge, and something that resembles an ADD-addled, ritalin-fueled kid banging on his keyboard with 2 bloody stumps.

Or maybe not. Anyway some of us have lower thresholds of tolerance for horrible posts, particularly when it comes to angry rants. For me, I judge angry rants more critically than ones that praise.

Back to the point...they need to release a few of these daily or weekly. PSP owners should be loading up on PS1 classics as well as PS3 owners. MS and even Nintendo release tons of old emulated games all the time.

The really annoying part is that Sony don't provide an explanation for the lack of content either. Here I was thinking that shortage of PS1 games was a global issue! I want answers, better yet I want my retro games as its clearly working in Japan!!!
