PS3 loses Monster Hunter 3 to Wii
One of Nintendo's many bombshells last night had to be the announcement of Monster Hunter 3 for the Wii platform. However, it was unclear at the time whether or not the previously announced PS3 version would be affected.According to Forbes, it appears that Capcom is abandoning the PS3 version altogether, making Wii the only platform for Monster Hunter 3. "Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title," Capcom managing corporate officer Katsuhiko Ichii said. This statement comes just weeks after Capcom pledged increase support for Sony's next generation platform.
While the Monster Hunter franchise has a relatively small following in the States, it is a powerhouse franchise in Japan. The last iteration of the franchise, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, sold over a million copies when it launched on PSP.

i'm really sad about this. I was really looking forward to a next-gen monster hunter game.
Magma @ Oct 10th 2007 1:30PM
So by high dev cost they just meant they were too cheap to actually make a next gen game..
Joe @ Oct 10th 2007 1:33PM
To me this makes little sense. Seeing as not that long ago Capcom said all future games would now be made for the PS3 over the PS2. Plus Capcom said they wanted there games to come out on as many system as they could. So then MH3 should still be coming out on PS3 plus there should even be a 360 version.
Another thing this just means MH3 will not have a big graphics jump as it would have on the PS3 or 360.
Also I wonder what this means for MH3 to come out on the PSP seeing as those games sell alot on the PSP. Plus as of right now the PSP has more consoles sold then the Wii so if MH3 went exclusive to the PSP that would be big news. Plus help sell even more PSP.
Plus it would be another big shock just like Dragon Quest IX went to the DS.
So to me this is really big new and will sell even more Wiis. So all this will do is make the Wii even harder to find. So Nintendo needs to get more Wiis out in Japan and the rest of the world.
But Like I said this is a big shock seeing as you would think MH3 would go to the PS3 and 360. But seeing as no news has been said about this game in a long time you have to wonder what happened behind the sceens.
Ken @ Oct 10th 2007 1:33PM
Capcom has shown they hate little to no love for Sony awhile ago. Many Playstation owners have since moved on. I am sure it will be a great game, but it is one I will gladly live without.
doug @ Oct 10th 2007 1:34PM
so its going to be like the ps2 monster hunter but with waggle time fun?
never$$hort @ Oct 10th 2007 1:34PM
"Due to high development cost of titles for PS3, we have decided to switch the platform to which we release our Monster Hunter 3 title"
-What a bunch of cheap-a$$es... Ride that fading trendy fad as long as you can Capcom, we all know who you'll come running back to in the end tho...
MattMan @ Oct 10th 2007 1:38PM
heresy...
Kxpuc @ Oct 10th 2007 1:44PM
see they do crap like this and probably say "oh the install base is low" but if the game actually came out it would increase the install base alone. So their lack of putting this game out hurts the chance of a greater install base which makes them not want to make the game...very confusing
Xiru @ Oct 10th 2007 1:51PM
This does really make me mad. I really was looking forward to monster hunter with next gen greaphics. It wouldn't even be so bad if they were like, we're making it only for 360 cause PS3 costs are too high. But instead, they go to the system with the worst graphics. This is a game that needs graphics. I want to be wowed when I see a giant dragon, not a pixely piece of crap like on the psp versions. Whatever capcom. You decided to take online play out of MH2 for PSP so I didn't buy it. Now you take the graphics out of MH3 and I won't buy it. Hope you enjoy the low sales.
Bored @ Oct 10th 2007 1:52PM
I was more stoked about the loss of Beautiful Katamari than this.
Whatever.
shase @ Oct 10th 2007 2:00PM
Well they want to make money... what can we expect? If you are in control would you rather have a big bonus or a bigger bonus? Anyway, RE is like the only Capcom series I like (besides SF) so it doesn't affect me... It is sad that Wii is lowering the standards and both Sony and MS's next system will probbaly wont be as ambitious as this gen.. thanks to Wii
Luke @ Oct 10th 2007 2:15PM
I am never gonna buy another capcom game anyways, so it really doesn't matter to me what they do.
James @ Oct 10th 2007 2:18PM
I'd be too busy for this game anyway, what with playing Halo 3, Bioshock, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4. Oh yeah, those are XBox 360 games. Maybe I'll fire up the PS3 to watch Transformers. Oops, can't do that. Hmmm, well I suppose I could just play some Q*Bert.
Geoff Gibson @ Oct 10th 2007 2:21PM
It makes sense. . .
Whats the biggest money making system in Japan?
The Nintendo Wii.
Whats one of the biggest selling games in Japan?
The Monster Hunter franchise.
Capcom doesn't hate Sony, they just want to maximize their profits. The Monster Hunter franchise has never been widely accepted in the U.S. or in Europe (Sony's strongest locale).
kingofwale @ Oct 10th 2007 2:22PM
>13. I'd be too busy for this game anyway, what with playing Halo 3, Bioshock, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4.
Gosh, so refreshing to see xbox with a list of variety of games not all based on FPS genre... oh wait.
Jevanzz @ Oct 10th 2007 2:38PM
Monster what?
comtar @ Oct 10th 2007 2:38PM
This is going to sell like fire. The Monster Rancher series in Japan actually moved systems, and rocketed PSP sales. I think Capcom saw this as a big picture purchase... if people were willing to spend an extra $200 to buy a PSP with game, then they must believe people will spend $250 to buy a Wii if they don't own it.
With the PS3 still being around $375-$500 in Japan, people might not want to shell out an extra $500 for the PS3... To me this seems like the safe bet for Capcom, and I personally think the money saved/profited from Monster Rancher on the Wii will be used to offset future projects.
It's like horror movies... they are low budget, easy to make, and make millions... they use the money from horror movies to help back up the development of the big budget summer movies and epic dramatic oscar winning movies. This is Capcom's money maker that they will probably use to fund future more epic projects.
It's a win-win for everyone... I don't see the problem... cept maybe Nintendo needs to start pressing out Wii's like Government prints out pennies.
Tony @ Oct 10th 2007 2:41PM
All they need to do now is put the brand new Onimusha game exclusively on Ngage and the travesty will be complete.
Devon @ Oct 10th 2007 2:43PM
I learned that it is the best game in the world.
Random1448 @ Oct 10th 2007 2:46PM
lazy dev's don't want to make a next gen game engin so they port the PS2 one to the wii and just put on a few extra polygons.
Xiru @ Oct 10th 2007 2:49PM
Comtar, it hurts the few PS3 fans that actually wanted this game. I was one of them. I enjoyed the 1st one for PSP. I was actually looking forward to this game and now poof! I actually care about the PS3 and want it to do well. This is like taking Crisis Core away from the PSP and putting it on the DS. It would really hurt Sony in Japan. Wii is going to put the gaming industry back 10 years if this keeps up.
Sammy @ Oct 10th 2007 2:53PM
For the person concerned about Katamari it is still coming the PS3 just in a different form this has been mentioned on this site. I imagine it will include 6axis controls or some kind of feature to make it a different game.
I am a bit upset as Capcom had long promised this as a PS3 project and I am sure that people bought a PS3 in Japan secure that this would be one of the titles.
I also though MH3 to be the perfect match for the PS3 compared to Wii with stronger online functionality and powerful graphics. I actually thought a technology jump was what this game needed to make it appealing. I would not resent the exclusive appearance on 360...but this move seems to go against a creative drive that the series needed.
Wild Pegasus @ Oct 10th 2007 2:57PM
Ugh Monster Hunter is one of my favorite games ever and i just can't see how its going to be playable on the wii, Plus Monster hunters big selling point is its multiplayer and we know the wiis online ain't as good as PS3.
Hate to say it but I'd still buy a wii for it anyway.

(Read: Due to being able to make easy money off an already popular game on a console with a high install base and an audience that won't mind us haphazardly tacking waggle on and not making any significant upgrades graphically, we have decided to go where the money-teat is, instead of moving forward with the way the series was intended and with next generation console(s).)
PS3 = high cost is now the fashionable excuse to give when you just want to make easy money off DS and Wii. Sorry but this is RIGHT AFTER Capcom pledged increased PS3 support, and after MH3 was already announced for PS3. Capcom is now in the negatives as far as my respect for them is concerned. Another one bites the dust.
Jay @ Oct 10th 2007 3:08PM
Capcom you are wrong, the only thing holding Monster Hunter back from being big in North America is the lack of online play. I love the PSP game but it is so difficult to get online(Xlink Kai).
Wii does not have a good online system and that is what people want from MH. I hope after it comes out on Wii, a PSP version with online will be made.
Larz @ Oct 10th 2007 3:12PM
Can't say that I blame them. When they said "Due to high development cost of titles for PS3..." what they really meant was "Dude, Wii is like last-gen hardware so it takes less effort, and Wii users don't care about graphics, plus the install base is huge! Less cost of development, more sales = $$$ cha-ching!"
That's the kind of thing we just have to expect happening with the Wii being so popular. Personally, I think most Wii games are overpriced for what you get. They should be around $30 or something.
OrganicShadow @ Oct 10th 2007 3:17PM
To everyone tooting their anti-wii horns because it's bad for the industry: fight the good fight. Do whatever you can to let publishers know that we don't want the industry held hostage until nintendo says its okay to start doing HD and online.
@25: Actually, developers are in the games-making business to make games, and it pays. PUBLISHERS, who tell the devs what to do, are in the money making business. If you haven't noticed yet, it's the DEVELOPERS that are talking about being skeptical of Wii and how they want to expand the industry in other ways, not the publishers. The publishers will do whatever it takes to spend the least and make the most. Developers just do what their told and make sure they hit those deadlines and get their hourly rate.
Hopefully Valve makes more console games. Those guys are supposedly not too thrilled about what Wii is doing to the industry and what it's offering. It's one thing to expand the market by getting parents into gaming, but it's another when you just whore them to fuel your money making diet pill pyramid scheme to dig a whole in the earth so the demons can rules once again......like that bug-eyed freak FEESUHMAY is.
Xiru @ Oct 10th 2007 3:25PM
Lets just hope this is the only case of Wii stealing a PS3/360 exclusive. I can live with the Wii getting its own version, but taking something that was meant for next gen and kicking it back a generation is just wrong. I don't care how good the gameplay is. This is a game that requires amazing graphics. Capcom is being smart from a business perspective, but it just comes at such a bad time. Sony is already struggling to keep up with the amazing 360 lineup this holiday season. Wii's isn't very good but they have their staple 1st party games like Smash to boost them through the holidays. This just feels like a "kick them while they are down" type move. I am glad to see that 360 and PS3 owners in this topic agree that the Wii has the potential to hurt the gaming industry. This is what i've been preaching all along. This war will soon shift from 360 vs PS3 vs Wii to Next gen vs New gen. Please don't let this happen. Support PS3 and 360 please!
Stephan Slack @ Oct 10th 2007 3:28PM
Wait until the game comes out.
Popfrogs @ Oct 10th 2007 3:44PM
Capcom can kiss my ass. Resident Evil 5 better be something really special after how we've been ignored by them.
comtar @ Oct 10th 2007 3:52PM
You know Xiru, there were these things called books that didn't have amazing graphics. But they told really good stories...
I plan on owning all 3 of this generations consoles cause each has their own way of having fun. I love a good story, and I love just having fun playing games, if that's Metal Gear Solid 4, DMC4, Metroid Prime 3, or even Dead Rising... I just want to have fun. I own both a Wii and a PS3 for now... I think the PS3 is superior to the 360 graphically and have alot of fun on it. Even though I admit, I like HD-DVD as a format for movies better.
My only concern with this announcement. Is this quote from the New York Times... "Analysts believe that Capcom, which makes the series, may be leading an exodus from the Sony platforms."
That to me is overdoing it. I doubt there will be some mass exodus from Sony, but I do think people might reconcider. Epic stories like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear I want on the next gen systems... but games like Katamari Damacy or even Street Fighter HD could be done on the Wii in my opinion if the Wii supported higher resolutions, which honestly might not take more then a simple software update.
But I personally don't care which console something appears on, games can be fun if they are basic, or advanced. I love a good story, and I don't personally care which Console tells me a good story. The PS2 was graphically superior to the Gamecube and X-box, and I didn't hear anyone complain about the PS2 setting back the industry 10 years with it outselling everything.
The only game in my opinion that is setting the industry back is Crysis... it shouldn't take a $15,000 computer to enjoy a video game to it's full potential, and Crysis could swing the balance of gaming in the wrong direction, there is such a thing as being TOO POWERFUL. If Crysis is so graphically intensive a PS3 can't even handle it, something is wrong... and it could cause people like Microsoft or Sony to try to make new consoles prematurely that make $600 for a game system seem cheap.
comtar @ Oct 10th 2007 3:55PM
Dang it, I don't know how I keep doing that....
To correct my last statement...
The PS2 was GRAPHICALLY INFERIOR to the Gamecube and X-box, and I didn't hear anyone complain about the PS2 setting back the industry 10 years with it outselling everything.
Darkdrium777 @ Oct 10th 2007 4:04PM
Bravo Mr. comtar. The PS2 came out before these two other consoles you mentionned, so it was not setting back, it was in fact advancing forward. The two others that came out after improved of course, but the PS2 already had great momentum and others could not catch up to it. So your correction is in fact incorrect.
As for Monster Hunter, I am really sad about this announcement since I'm a big fan of the series (I have all games except for the Japan only MHDos). I really hope that Capcom will reconsider in the future, or that this is just some type of misunderstanding like it can happen sometimes. God I hope so, I really want to fight dragons with next gen visuals.
TRUTH @ Oct 10th 2007 4:23PM
MAN!!! Another game I wanted Bytes the Dust!!!
Hovan316 @ Oct 10th 2007 4:23PM
It will play and LOOK horrible on the Wii...ohh well, looks like Capcom only cares about is $$$ and not quality. They forgot that Next-Gen means 2007-08-09 = HD (720p/1080p) and not last-gen with weird and tiring controls.
Xiru @ Oct 10th 2007 4:30PM
Please keep this argument relative. Books have nothing to do with Wii vs PS3. This is about technology. Monster Hunter does NOT have a good story. There is no story to it. This is a game that relies on its vast environments and beautiful scenery to grab new fans. If this were some sort of story telling RPG, I wouldn't be so harsh. Something like Kingdom Hearts would be great on the Wii because it doesn't require amazing graphics. This is a game that was promised to be exclusive to PS3 and screenshots were shown. Now the PS3 fans who wanted this and who couldn't wait to see what kind of beauty Capcom could pull off are screwed. The Wii Monster Hunter will not be much different from what is available on the PS2. I own all 3 systems as well but I only own 2 Wii games and they are both 1st party. I can not get into the Wii's graphics and the control gets old.
Now on to Comtar. "The PS2 was GRAPHICALLY INFERIOR to the Gamecube and X-box, and I didn't hear anyone complain about the PS2 setting back the industry 10 years with it outselling everything." This statement is totally out of context and please don't try to use this as a defense. The PS2 was inferior to the xbox and gamecube, i'll agree. But only by a very very small margin. I'll try and give an example because you aren't understaning what i'm trying to say. Taking a game from the PS3 and putting it on the Wii is like taking A PS2 game and putting it on the N64. This is a complete generational jump BACKWARDS. The PS2/Xbox/GC all had similar graphics power. The Wii isn't even close to what the PS3 or 360 can do. I hope this clears it up and helps you to understand just what is happening hear.
Sammy @ Oct 10th 2007 4:38PM
Yes the PS2 was the weakest machine of the last generation but there certainly was not gap in power that is seen between Xbox360/PS3 and Wii.
I like the Wii...so I have no problem with that. It is doing its own thing and has sold well. That is all well and good. I personally want to see more real games on the system so as to prove its salt. Mario Galaxy may be the first true 'must own' title for the machine. MP3 being a pretty good example. But I don't want to play compromised games...just because they have a revolutionary control method. Something of the EyeToy about it at the moment. This will certainly change and I suppose moves like this will aid the console. But I want to see things designed to the machines strengths. This is no way an attack on the Wii. Just I think as Monster Hunter stands it is a better fit for the Next Gen machines.
PS: how do you know that the person commenting did not believe the PS2 set game development back?
I actually liked the PS2 last generation because of its support...but the xbox and to a lesser extent gamecube probably would have produced far stronger experiences as lead platforms.
Andir3.0 @ Oct 10th 2007 5:15PM
I'm going to call BS on this...
If you can make it for the Wii, it will still run on the PS3 (entirely on the PPU in fact). When you put something on the PS3 it doesn't mean it HAS to use all the SPUs, but they are there for the taking.
They are using the sad "price to develop is too high" cop out to mask the real reason. Sales. Face is Capcom, your a company and your sole reason is targeting the biggest install base.
LeChuck @ Oct 10th 2007 5:17PM
The games follow the sales. Due to the headstart and lower price than PS3, 360 was the sales leader and was snatching up all the exclusives. Now Wii has surpassed 360 sales and games are going in that direction. PS3 is taking a while to build up steam. Sony keeps shuffling the configuration around to cut the price but the big ticket games are still too far away for the tide to really turn yet.
It also doesn't help that Sony gets such a bad rap. With 360's hardware problems it should be the most hated piece of hardware since the VirtualBoy. And it seems not matter what Nintendo does the Wii hardly ever gets criticized. But Sony gets crucified for everything they do.
Anthony Pittarelli @ Oct 10th 2007 5:33PM
maybe they can dilute the wii version and release it on the psp or something
Larz @ Oct 10th 2007 5:37PM
PS2 inferior to Gamecube and Xbox?? Xbox came out years later and barely looked any better than PS2. And I have never seen a Gamecube game with better graphics than I've seen on PS2. Please give an example, as I am really curious.
"Sony is already struggling to keep up with the amazing 360 lineup..."
When did that happen? I haven't seen a single exclusive for 360 that interests me at all except geometry wars, and I'm not spending $400 on a console just for that.
mat parker @ Oct 10th 2007 5:54PM
I'm gonna get murderised for this but I will 75-80% guarantee that this hits 360 as well
Xiru @ Oct 10th 2007 7:19PM
Larz. I'm the biggest Sony fanboy around, but even I see how good the games are for the 360. With all the delays for PS3, the 360 will have the best lineup this holiday season. For instance. My brother just bought Orange box for 360. It was supposed to be out for PS3 at the same time. But now I sit here in agony while he plays it and I have to wait till Decemeber. Another example is Stranglehold. Yet another game that I think is awesome, but I have to wait for while its available right now for 360. Who knows how many more games will be delayed before Christmas. While it is true that PS3 did have a good lineup going into this holiday, most of the games have been delayed. I am eagerly awaiting Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank. Please no more delays! On the possitive side, I think this is the last holiday season us Sony fans have anything to worry about as March 2008 and on, it should be all Sony. I'm so sick of all the doom and gloom articles for PS3. When will it end? I just recieved folklore today and its awesome! Anyway, don't lose faith in the PS3. I'm hanging on tight even with all this bad news floating around. It is the best system hands down, and that will never change.
Stephan Slack @ Oct 10th 2007 7:59PM
@36. I am spending $1900 this xmas and will be able to play the game and the highest settings. No, I am not getting rebates or anything, I'm shopping at newegg.com.
@40. It will look and play horrible, right, right. And you've already purchased the game and played it in full length? GTFO newb.
Stephan Slack @ Oct 10th 2007 8:03PM
@46. Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime 1. Don;t have to go any further.
Andy @ Oct 10th 2007 8:15PM
This is the first time I have seen Wii fanboys on this site.
You have to think Capcom gave up on this game a while ago. I mean for them to waste years of next gen game development and throw it away doesn't make sense.
Its hard to support a company that so frequently changes sides.
The PS3 exclusive list dwindles to 50.
Larz @ Oct 10th 2007 9:13PM
Xiru:
None of those are exclusive. Show me some good 360 exclusives. The delay argument is weak, I don't really care if I have to wait a couple weeks. Often times I wait till the price drops anyways.
Stephan Slack:
Yes, those are good games, I own both of them, neither looks better than a good PS2 game.
