Together, PS3s can be very brainy

Students from UC Irvine and Dartmouth college have netted themselves the $10,000 prize at IBM's Cell Broadband Engine Professor University Challenge on September 24. By connecting three PlayStation 3s together the team have emulated functions of the human brain - specifically, visual recognition algorithms. While other gaming platforms had substantial lag when performing visual recognition tasks, the PS3 lowered that to only a second of thinking time in order to recognise an object.

This marks only the beginning of the group's research into utilising artificial brain algorithms for use in robots, cars and other machines. Recreating the human brain, curing cancer - what can't the PS3 do? Maybe one day it'll even have some games to play. We kid, we kid ...

Wow, the PS3 is really good at folding protein and emulating the human brain. I wonder what the next amazing technological feat will be. Maybe games, wouldn't that be amazing if people used the PS3 for making video games? imagine the possibilities.

Uh oh! PS3 has a practical scientific use, helps cure cancer and has the most technologically advanced games (Killzone 2). I also forgot to mention that PS3 commercials don't involve 2 Japanese men coming to my door and asking me to play with their Wii. Kind of disturbing. But yeah, to the guy that said PS3 has no games. It has better games than the Wii and is catching the 360. Its not too late to change to the winning side.

All these news articles prove is that the PS3 is versatile. There is no need to throw games (or in your opinion lack of games) into the mix. I have yet to see any multipurpose uses for the Xbox 360. If you have a link I would like to see it.

Could this info potential be used to make more intelligent AI? Maybe they could even make AI even smarter than some unnamed user.

PS3 outsells 360 in Japan every week and might even outsell Wii in the coming week in Japan even at the higher price. The other comments are your opinion. Do you have anything else I need to debunk? I love beating Wii fanboys at their own games. Also, who cares about 7 player games when you have online? Of corse the 360 is versatile. I use it to stream my music off my pc through my stereo, playgames online, chat with my friends while they are on a pc or mobile phone. What the hell are you talking about with your crippled a$$ XMB. Oh yeah, I download movies to.

With the PS3 only selling good in Japan won't get you anywhere, just ask the Sega Saturn that. I would rather be succesful in more places like the US and europe then just Japan. Besides the Japanese are strange. They like pokemon and handhelds with a dusting of some of the strangest a$$ games that border on homosexual that I have ever seen. Hell there male characters look like chicks for god sakes.

By the way, all PS3's collect dust no matter how much you play them.

The no bc PS3 isn't out yet, so even if you had a PS3 you would be able to play most PS2 games.

The PS3 has outsold the 360 for a couple of months, and had they been released at the same time would have about the same sales.

There are a couple of games that support seven players like Pixel Junk and maybe Fifa 08

Coming from someone who owns a 360 and obviously sides with it you are a hypocrite to mock the PS3's SKUs. I would be a hypocrite if I mocked the 360's SKUs.

The PS3 has better and more games than the Wii. The 360 has been out longer so therefore more games have come out for it. Mulitplatform games are now the same on 360 and PS3, Fifa 08, Sega Rally Revo.

Ohh look, I found something wrong with each of your statements. Well one of them is sortof true.

You don't have a PS3.

The Saturn is a totally different story. It was created with 2d in mind. The PS1 was geared for 3d. Obviously, the future of gaming would be 3d and the Saturn just couldn't keep up. Not to mention Sony had more 3rd party support. This isn't valid because the PS3 is the most powerful and future proof of the 3 consoles and Sony still has the most 3rd party support. Once that price comes down to $299, its game over for the other 2.

I do not have a PS3, how much do you want to bet? I got my 60G at Launch, DID YOU? I am not a fan boy for any console, I am a gamer. If you cannot make fun out of a situation then all of you have serious issues. Stop taking things so literal.

Furthermore, I presently a HOME BETA TESTER as I always get in on this for Sony. Just to prove, it to you I use THE1(GT) on all my consoles.

Haha, you would try to tell me you got it at launch? Well i've got you beat. I was the 1st preorder and the 1st to get mine in Waldorf, MD at launch. Probably the 1st in Charles County Maryland. So yeah, I got mine at launch. I waited at 4am on October 10th to secure my preorder on just a "hunch". I'm a little confused though, you say you don't have a PS3 but you are touting how you supposedly got yours before us and that you are a Home beta tester. Well I have all 3 consoles as well, and also a top end PC I use for WoW, Quake 4 and other games. Aside from Wow, I play my PS3 the most. I take this stuff serious because I'm sick of people saying the PS3 is inferior when its clearly not.

(all shooters, you haters) are ALL MUST HAVE games. the ps3 has none. and don't you dare say resistance. killzone 2, mgs4 and ff13 might all be must-havers. but thats yet to be seen. isn't it.

@ scutt (per comment 22) ...i have a 360 (i have all 3 systems), and I do NOT own Halo 3, BioShock, NOR do I own Gears of War. I've PLAYED Gears, but the other 2 don't interest me. Gears didn't even interest me either, but a couple of friends of mine told me it was gonna be fun, so I rented it. Beat it. Took it back. It was okay. Not bad. But not that good. Rainbow Six and GRAW are better IMO. But in all seriousness, why would I PURCHASE a game that I can beat in 6-7 hours?

Games that short are never considered "must haves"...

and in regards to the "TEH MULT1pLAY3RRRR!!!11!" comments that will probably ensue...

I could give a rat's ass about multi-player.

Give me a POLISHED single player game, and I'm sold.

Basically what I'm saying...is the 360 doesn't have any MUST HAVE games yet. Maybe some MUST RENTS, but no MUST HAVES.

Well, this post has turned into another fanboy war mostly because of me. (sorry?)

I'm just saying why don't you support your investment some more. I cannot stand people who have PS3's and use fanboy arguments against a console they own. They just say things like I only use it for folding or it only use it for collecting dust.

Just enjoy your purchase some more. You can watch BRD's and play a handful of good games. Try a game like Heavenly Sword or Warhawk. Your not even giving it a chance.

you didn't touch a nerve. i just like being a jackass. and to the guy who said you don't have any of the 3 games, what do you want? a medal? obviously i didn't assume everyone owned them? and people who review games and say things like, more technologically advanced, could be basing it on nothing. what's more technologically advanced about it. what does it do that's so show stopping? thats all i was originally asking. it's not a question of whether credibility went into that statement. it's just, "more technologically advanced" could mean a myriad of things. and hey. if it's good (and part of me hopes it will be so i can justify a ps3 in part) then hooray!

What can't the PS3 do?

as well as what's been stated:

- take advantage of it's own technology in video games
- release games on schedule (still waiting for Stranglehold and Orange Box)
- allow in-game XMB
- use ANY PS2 peripheral without assistance
- sync up with my Zune
- offer games that aren't just shiny XBOX1 games
- send me my 5 free blu-ray movies (it's been a full 31 days)
- spilt-screen gaming
- alot of things that need to be addressed right away

don't get me wrong, i love my PS3, but it's starting to become a problem that i own 3 controllers and out of the 6 or 7 games i own, two of them allow more than one controller at a time.

i was talking to a guy on MSN, he wasnt a fanboy, but he only had a 360 and PC, and he actually had trouble naming good exclusives for the 360, and rememer bioshock, gears and halo3 sont count because bioshock is on pc, gears is almost on pc and halo 3 is being ported to the PC right at this moment, he even changed the subject when i asked for 7 good games in the coming months and 2008, i however had no trouble, 5 good games for ps3 now, resistance, motorstorm, folklore, warhawk, heavenly sword, and i added a 6th once, ridge racer 7. then when it came to naming 7 good upcoming games, he changed the subject but i wouldnt let him go, i pwned him with MGS4 littlebigplanet, killzone 2, HAZE, and was nice to him by counting the final fantasy 13 games as a one, that makes, 7. just look at comment number 12's URL, the 360 has 2 good exclusives coming out. and one is being ported to ps3 a month after its release. 360? major phail, every microsoft fanboy rumor is shot down except the price, which was mildly shut down after considering all the add-ons the 360 has that the ps3 has included in the box. first it was no games, that stuck for a while, till now, then they said that the 360's graphics are better, only pointing out lighting, then saying the AI is better on the 360, showing resistance on easy and halo 3 on hard isnt much of a fair fight on AI, not to mention the ps3 has 8 processors, 6 being used for games, if a game cuts corners on an aspect of the game nobody really notices, ive got no suggestions right now, they can improve the processor for the AI.

but that's just it! the AI isn't smart, they just bombard you with enemies now. Yes, some of the characters are relatively clever, but what's typically happening is that you're being bombarded with enemies to make up for lack of a brain and they all attack you at once.

besides, I'm still worried about split-screen multiplayer. I have a wifi setup in my home, but not all of my friends own a PS3. I'd like to see some old fashion action where I play against people in the same room too! a console that can use up to seven controllers. We all know that NO video game will ever make use of that. or the PSP funcionality for that matter.
