PS3 sales surge 178 percent in the UK
And the price drop is the cause. Since releasing the 40GB model and reducing the price of the 60GB one, sales have skyrocketed, besting even the Xbox 360. However, the PS3 was unable to trounce upon the sales leaders, Wii and DS.
With the recent surge in popularity of the PS3, games like Resistance have been climbing up the all formats chart. Insomniac's year-old FPS is now the eight best selling game in the territory.

lets hope it has legs
the exclusive PES2008 bundle in EU should do wonders for Sony/Konami at the end of the month

And who would have thought that PES would sell systems? Konami. Now that this is coming along, MGS4 may very well best even Halo3 in sales. Perhaps not stateside, but in the UK, all is possible.

uh oh microsoft, looks like 2003 all over again

Year old FPS that holds up ridiculously well over time. I just finished the fight (lawl) last night with my buddies on co-op. Had prviously given up due to the incredibly challenging Chimera AI always kicking my ass.

2008 will be the PS3 year. It's moving slowing, but surely. Sony just need to keep the developers on side.

I'm curious to the ratio of the sales between the 40 and 60 GBs.

I have to say, I'm overwhemled by the PS3's capabilities. I was unsure to start with, but wow!
For example, ok the games might not be pushing the hardware much at the moment, and there may not be any halo 3 killers out yet but I paid £1.99 for Loco Roco on PSN and can't stop playing it... my fiance loves it too as does my little sister and my folks! fl0w is great as well at a similar price. I also have Warhawk at half the retail price which is fun for multiplayer.
On the Multimedia side, it's scores top points! Swapped out the HDD for a 250GB one, got my favourite photos on it, all my CDs, and I'm using DLNA NAS for Video until they add "folders" to the video area in the XMB. Once I've converted all my vids to MP4 (for use also on my PSP) then I really only need my laptop for web browsing and the occasional letter (even then the PS3 can handle that and google docs is web based altough I've not tried it on the PS3 yet).
Linked with my PSP Slim, I have a portable media extender that I can take anywhere and plug into my stereo in the bedroom/kitchen for multimedia all over the house!
The PS3 is certainly the centre of our digital entertainment. Can't wait for PlayTV and IPTV on PS3.
WeHasFanboys @ Oct 16th 2007 10:34AM
Yesssssss. That means more people to play with/against.

I have several friends in the UK and two of them who thought the PS3 60 gig was too expensive have told me they are planning on buying the new 40 gig version very soon.
If these new sales figures hold, perhaps the PS3 will start getting the props it deserves.
poprocker @ Oct 16th 2007 11:22AM
I'll actually pick up the 40GB model when it hits the US. Not getting rid of my 360 though. There's just too many must have games for that system.
SuperGayParade @ Oct 16th 2007 12:09PM
poprocker: just don't play it too much before those games... or....

The massive sales of the PS3 in Japan and Europe will ensure that developers will continue to support the format, so there will never be too few games. Sorry M$ fanboys, the PS3 isn't going anywhere.
Frank @ Oct 16th 2007 12:59PM
As much as I'm glad to see this, there aren't MASSIVE sales in Japan Brian. They sell like 30,000 a month.
Ken @ Oct 16th 2007 2:37PM
Keep in mind this is all happening before the release of MGS4 or either Final Fantasy XIII. Look what the release of FFVII did for the PSP.
With reports of the Wii not being played and the Xbox struggling in both Japan and Europe, things are looking very bright for the PS3's future.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Oct 17th 2007 12:25AM
every 360 owner i know right now says they will buy a PS3 when MGS4 comes out. Its not the amount of games that bothers them now since the PS3 has a lot of 8 across the board its the lack of a killer app. the all happened to get a 360 when GoW came out they never really cared for anthing else on the 360. they do have other games but he main reason was GoW, if it never came then they most likely would of only owned a wii for zelda right now.
Anthony @ Oct 17th 2007 5:38AM
Why is the Wii black!?
Jay @ Oct 17th 2007 3:36PM
But no-one is buying the 40GB version! I have seen three top ten lists for the PS3 category in the UK for the past week. All have the lower-priced 60GB at #1; none have the cheaper 40GB in the top ten at all......and Play is now showing the 60GB PS3 as #5 for ALL consoles and games after months during which the PS3 never appeared. People don't want a smaller hard drive, no BC and fewer USB ports! They just wanted a cheaper 60GB model.
Also, I reckon we will see very high console sale spikes after the UK release of MGS4, CoD4, GT5 and....LittleBigPlanet. That last one will show the Wii-boys the error of their ways (or should I say Wii-girls, housewives and old age pensioners?).

i bought my PS3 60gb weeks after launch first console i ever bought and hoped it would combine decent intuituve game controls using the 6 axis with 1080P or 720p graphics and realistic physics.
so far motorstorm is the only game to really do it.
Resistance and every other FPS i have seen well- i am not using a thumb stick to control my player when the designers should be using the sixaxis gyros and intertia sensors to control point of view and and movement in all 3d FPS type games. If designers write games with intuitive interface then people who have never played a console game be able to play within minutes rather than spending hours trying to learn the interface. Better interface = better product = better sales.
