Video: Capcom unveils Street Fighter 4
In addition to announcing a PS3 version of Lost Planet, Capcom has unveiled a brand new game: Street Fighter 4. Street Fighter 4, as you've guessed, is a brand new iteration to the classic Capcom fighting series - the first new Street Fighter in ten years. The game is over a year away, and no gameplay footage has been shown so far. Capcom's other fighter, Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, has been delayed to 2008 as the team has been trying to reduce lag time on the game's online offerings.
The trailer above doesn't mention which platform(s) it will eventually end up on, but we're going to remain hopeful that Capcom will bring it onto the PS3. We've already watched the trailer multiple times - extreme violence + inky aesthetic = guaranteed repeat watching.

i'm sick of fighting games like that, i havent enjoyed one in at least 10 yrs.
R0n1n35 @ Oct 17th 2007 1:05PM
wow, that is one of the sweetest trailers i've seen...especially for a fighting game.
wasn't too big on fighting games in general. but if they made the game look like that that'd be siiick
B1ooDshOt @ Oct 17th 2007 1:13PM
it would be smart if capcom made this a ps3 exclusive.
lenny0487 @ Oct 17th 2007 1:15PM
so will there be more capcom news by the end of the week, or is that it?
comtar @ Oct 17th 2007 1:16PM
I sincerly hope that Street Fighter IV does for online fighting games, what Street Fighter II did for Arcade Fighting. Since the arcades are dead, or near death... at least in America... I'd like to see this game resurrect fighting games and make it something fun to do online.
Just for Gods sake Capcom, get some cool voice to announce the Rounds, not some annoying Japan happy voice like you did for some of the Versus series. After playing some Unreal Tournament 3, just do what they did, and get the voice of Optimus Prime. Also get the original Street Fighter 2 musician to make some memorable tunes. Fighting game music hasn't been exactly memorable since Street Fighter 2.... Well you know what... I find the original Killer Instinct music memorable... still it's been a while since fighting games had memorable themes.
RagingStormX @ Oct 17th 2007 1:36PM
Fcuk it...I am man enough to step up and say that this news has impressed me. But Crapcom isn't out of the clear yet...I would like to know if its still gonna be 2D and coming to the PS3 (with online play ofcourse)..and if it is, THEN! I will be truely won over. So thats one down off my list of games Crapcom needs to release to fully win me over. All that are left are Breath of Fire 6, Power Stone 3, a new Onimusha, Chaos Legion 2...and if possible a Marvel vs Capcom 3.
Luke @ Oct 17th 2007 1:35PM
Man, I am really not gonna buy any more capcom games.
MYPS3KilledMy360 @ Oct 17th 2007 1:35PM
0.o whats this you can counter throws now? maybe maybe not
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 1:36PM
I'm seriously pumped about this game. Just so long as it isn't done by the Udon guys I will be happy. I want to see the same team of artists from Street Fighter III: Third Strike, combined with the game mechanics from MVC2.
@Comtar
There has been plenty of memorable music in fighting games of recent. I think that all of the SFIII:TS was great; and although annoying 90% of the time, MVC2 had some rather memorable music. The uber-annoying, "Gunna Take You for a Ride," song in specific is ingrained in my mind.
OTAM @ Oct 17th 2007 2:42PM
I will only buy this if Capcom steps out of the 2D world from 1992. If this game comes out and is full blown 3D fighting like Dead or Alive and Virtual Fighter,I will shit myself.
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 1:50PM
@RagingStormX
I would love to see a MVC3 also, but Capcom lost the rights to Marvel games to EA. So, it looks like we'll be stuck in a land of dreams for some time to come.
Wonderful dreams, just like the chance of getting to play Marvel vs Capcom vs SNK. Oh, how wonderful that would be.
Azza @ Oct 17th 2007 1:51PM
@8 Please don't use acronyms just say what you mean so people can understand you
Luke @ Oct 17th 2007 1:52PM
@RagingStormX
Man, you are really easily won over.
Capcom could probably do nothing to win me over now.
They might could start by making DMC4 exclusive to sony again. That might be a start. other than that they can go to H***,
OTAM @ Oct 17th 2007 1:55PM
I pray to god Capcom will get out of the 2D world from 1992. If this game is full blown 3D fighter like Dead or Alive and Tekken,I will cream my pants and buy it immediately.
Hopefully it'll be a PS3 exclusive,but from Capcom,I wouldnt hold my breath. I don't expect much from them.
Maybe they patronize us even more and port the Resident Evil remake to the PS3.
chris.westermann @ Oct 17th 2007 1:52PM
Wow, thanks Capcom! Your bringing us ports of games your developing on other platforms. From my experience most PS3 ports are lousy and are generally an afterthought, developed first for the Xbox360 then hacked to work on the PS3 (i.e. like anything by EA). I thought Capcom was going to excite PS3 owners with perhaps an exclusive title. I guess Sony should slip Capcom a few more bucks for a few more exclusive titles, or at least to hang on to announced titles that slip away to the Wii of all things.
Bored @ Oct 17th 2007 1:59PM
I hope it will really be in 3D, with not too exaggerated cell-shading and clever cinematic effects.
Add to that subtle innovations like those in SFIII, and it will rock.
If the gameplay graphics are such that it ends up close to the teaser, it will rule.
ClarkyCat @ Oct 17th 2007 1:56PM
Erm, why does Ryu look like... a rejected GeOW character? :/ The intro basically ripped off the SFII anime from years ago, the fight between Ryu and Sagat at the start. It still looked pretty good though, hope they improve the character design and bring the gameplay somewhere near the level of a Guilty Gear game, I'll get it just to see a Next Gen Psycho Crusher!
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 2:05PM
@Azaa - Street Fighter has a cult-like following, and there has always been acronyms used by it's players.
Seriously, would you want us to say, "Capcom vs. SNK: Millionaire Fighting 2001," or, "Street Fighter III 2nd Impact: Giant Attack?"
Don't worry, all of us who play in the EVO tournament series wish that Capcom used a real numbering of naming system too, because when there are 3 different Street Fighter III games it get's a little bit annoying.
So, in conclusion, acronyms are common for Street Fighter fans, and almost have to be used.
dancingtosirens @ Oct 17th 2007 2:16PM
Still dont understand why everyone here hates Capcom.
So they've done a few things to mess up. Whatever, I still enjoy their games.
But thats just me.
comtar @ Oct 17th 2007 2:49PM
@Wonderflex
I could be way off, or maybe because I was an impressionable youth back in the day... but to me video game music seemed alot more memorable back in the day of Killer Instinct and Street Fighter II as far as fighting games is concerned.
I mean there's websites dedicated to hacking the music of Marvel VS Capcom 2 on Dreamcast because it's seen as being so insanely aweful. The only music memorable from the versus series was remixed anthems to well known characters, like the Ken and Ryu themes.
I think overall music in video games hasn't been as memorable, don't get me wrong, I find some of the Metal Gear themes, or pretty much most the music that comes out of Konami still original and memorable. But I don't find myself humming the new Ninja Gaiden music, but the old NES Ninja Gaiden music... same thing with Metroid Prime... only really good music in that series was the remixed Super Metroid themes. And nothing gives you a sence of awesome in Final Fantasy then the original anthem, most the music in Final Fantasy XII was okay except the opening title theme which was simply the old 8-bit theme done by an orchestra.
D L Ball @ Oct 17th 2007 3:08PM
Ok best new openning for a Classic game. I know that a lot of you feel jilted after capcom's crappy dealings with the PS3, but face it if you're a true fan of the series this is welcome event that has been long coming. I would like to see 3D models used like in the teaser but with out some of the splash effects. If the game engine can be like the teaser the will truly have a new hit on their hands. I would even like to see this be a online game but if not so what, just bring all of character from all the street fighter series to truly give something to all of true fans to go out and have to buy this new title. I'd like to see Capcom get back into the game it would be about time.
Michael C. Sherrin @ Oct 17th 2007 2:43PM
Damn, I love that art style. Are they going ot be able to replicate that into gameplay, I hope. Almost Okami styled anime. But as long as the game is 2D I'll be happy. I just wonder if Capcom ran out of adjectives for Street Fighter II.

I hope Ken's son is in it... Mel is his name i believe.
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 3:03PM
@OTAM - I'm the complete opposite. I want a great, 2D, game in HD; that isn't done in comic book graphics. I believe that the 2D nature of the series has always been directly connected to it's popularity. The feeling of Street Fighter games simply doesn't translate well into the world of 3D. The closest I've come to feeling like I was playing a Street Fighter game (although more a versus feeling was) in 3D was with Rival Schools.
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 3:46PM
@Comtar
Oh, I agree totally, there is no comparison between old music, and new music. I just think we can't say all new music isn't memorable.
I don't know why it is, but I think that the old music sticks better because of how simple the tones are. In modern music, even that which has a wonderfully epic feel to it, I don't ever seem to find myself humming it at work. The classics though stick around forever.
phattie @ Oct 17th 2007 4:40PM
They need to make it 2.5d and look like those SSF2RemixHD characters but with 60fps, instead of those sprite-based animation. And, they seem to be taking a darker tone.. and, please, have somewhat realistic characters unlike SF3.. no aliens please.
Wonderflex @ Oct 17th 2007 4:56PM
@Phattie
If you went with somewhat realistic we would have to cut out a lot of people - such as Blanka, Dhalsim, and Akuma. Besies, sure, Necro and Twelve, aren't exactly top-tier, they can still be fun to play as.
Consolcwby @ Oct 17th 2007 8:11PM
I'd love to see the ingame graphics replicate this trailer's art style. Dark watercolors that move fluidly would be a nice change of pace for the series. Unfortunately, the game will probably either look like ass or play like it. Capcom has no inbetweens lately. =S
Shattercross @ Oct 17th 2007 10:20PM
It's not like 2d fighing games stopped after street fighter 2, Snk still makes the King of Fighters series which has a huge cult following.
Anyway here's my useless input/opinion/guesses:
-The game will be rendered in 3d but play like a 2d game, because drawing several sprites at higher resolutions with the number of frames required for the smoothest animations is too tiresome.
-The game will not play like MvC2, part of the appeal of MvC2 is that it plays like nothing else- if every fighing game Capcom made played like MvC2, it wouldn't be as awesome.
Anyway, take my input as you want- either way, it's great to see Capcom jumping back into the fighting fray.
Zombie Huggles @ Oct 18th 2007 4:39AM
360 is getting the game also. Capcom refuses to show exclusive love for the PS3. But I feel that other game developers are passing Capcom by.
c_busbyuk @ Oct 18th 2007 8:31AM
OMFG!! SF4, r u kidding me?? This is big news and I cant wait. Will probably buy on PS3 due to the controller. Xbiox pads are absolute garbage for fighting games with the dpad hence why i never play SFII hyper fighting on live arcade!! I also think they should stick with 2D too be honest as you have SF EX games for the 3D versions. Leave that for 3D and let them make an even more enhanced version of SFIII(if that is possible).
Wonderflex @ Oct 18th 2007 11:01AM
@c busbyuk
It doesn't matter what console it's on, because when you play fighting games you should avoid using a standard controler at all costs. Get an x-arcade stick, or a Hori.
KiraXD @ Oct 18th 2007 4:46PM
Clean up the Character design a bit but keep the sketch-shaded 3D look and even I (one who hates fighters) will get this game. that trailer is amazingly stylized, and i love it.
Jon_B @ Nov 18th 2007 5:08PM
I'm pumped for this game as well!
I'm hoping it's three dimensional, but of course really good at the same time. I mean, the two-dimensional lovers have Street Fighter 2 High Defintion for pete sake. We deserve 3D on this. At least I hope. Then I'd buy both games.
NELSON a7x @ Nov 19th 2007 3:04PM
Fuck yeah. It's about time. Trailer looks badass with the scene their in. For sure i'm going to get this game.
villain_xx @ Nov 29th 2007 1:30AM
I disagree with any one who wants it to be total 3d. Im fed up with the 3d fighters thanks to Tekken and soul calibur. Only difference is one of them you can use weapons. Capcom has been the only company to deliver the 2d fighters properly and innovation.
