PES 2008 features serious lag on PS3
"Konami Digital Entertainment has uncovered issues which can affect the online gameplay quality of PES 2008 on PLAYSTATION 3. We are working at full strength to find a solution as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise for this inconvenience. Further announcements will be made as soon as we have additional details."
The PS3 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has been giving a lot of soccer fans some serious distress. The online mode of PES is seemingly broken, according to various reports to Pro-G. "PS3 PES 2008 is practically unplayable online, with the ball pinging about uncontrollably and players randomly disappearing and reappearing." It notes that the PS3 version also suffers from a poor framerate, something not found in the Xbox 360 version.
Certainly, Konami is trying to fix these problems. However, it's disappointing to see yet another game get such poor treatment on Sony's machine.

Not to be off topic, but Skate has some framerate issues on the PS3...having a consistent framerate for a skating game, or anything with timing is pretty important.
elrani @ Oct 25th 2007 1:11PM
they must fix it immediately !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Calmojo @ Oct 25th 2007 1:21PM
They say this the day before release? o..k bit late lads. Meh, i'll still be getting it.
T-P-M @ Oct 25th 2007 1:22PM
How did they not notice this in testing????
russ99 @ Oct 25th 2007 1:24PM
That's bad news, but what do they expect for a 360 port?
Sony really needs to get on the ball and make it worth a developer's while to develop concurrently for both systems on non-exclusive games.
Quality is really suffering on games developed for 360 and ported over to PS3, especially since it seems the porting for PS3 work most often happens on a rush to make a delayed release date.
Hopefully Konami will have this mostly straightened out before Pro Evo is released in the US.
sicklesdawg @ Oct 25th 2007 1:26PM
@1 I have skate and have not noticed any frame rate issues.
bozack @ Oct 25th 2007 1:40PM
It's Soccer, the delays and the slow frame-rate just add to the realness of an already boring sport. I wouldn't be surprised if the players didn't move at all. That would make those 1 to 0 games so much more exciting.
FixtSux @ Oct 25th 2007 1:49PM

From Gamespot re: PS3 skate (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/sports/skate/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gssummary&tag=summary;review):
"But any points the PS3 version earns are totally negated by its awful frame rate. Whether you're playing alone or online, the game drops frames all over the place when anything starts moving quickly. This is a very timing-oriented game, and having a frame rate this bad really hurts the gameplay."
Don't get me wrong, I'm a PS3 fanboy as much as the next guy (if not more), but it is pretty frustrating.
finelicker @ Oct 25th 2007 1:53PM
@6
Then you are blind my freind.
FrankTheCrank @ Oct 25th 2007 1:54PM
The 360 is just a PC incognito. This is why developers LOVE to develop games on it. All they have to do is port their PC titles straight over. Everything about it is a PC.
The PS3 on the other hand is a dedicated system, which is not a PC. It's a new system with a new architecture. Developers are LAZY. They don't want to learn the new architecture. They would rather recompile existing code and call it a day.
HAAS599 @ Oct 25th 2007 1:55PM
@8
Its not the games, its the people that make them.
ryano @ Oct 25th 2007 1:57PM
i wish developers would quit porting 360 games to PS3 and instead opt to build it alongside the 360 versions.
COD4 is doing this and it's proving to best the 360 version in lighting and texture resolution.
the PS3 just plain sucks when it comes to porting.
FixtSux @ Oct 25th 2007 1:57PM
@11
Couldn't agree with you more.
ryano @ Oct 25th 2007 1:59PM
and no Ninja Gaiden Sigma doesn't count. that was improved upon and took time to port which most developers don't have when trying to get a coinciding release date for both platforms.
Michael @ Oct 25th 2007 2:00PM
@8
I don't believe your statement is very acurate, seeing as how there are plenty of games, i.e. Resistance, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, WarHawk, that do not suffer from frame rate issues. Which, by looking at the pattern would suggest that it is not due to the hardware, but quite possibly a coding problem.
SirBlazeAlot @ Oct 25th 2007 2:06PM
I got skate.....online is the only time I have frames "dropping all over the place" and its not even that bad.....and in the single player campaign.....I get the "occasionally rare" framerate issue when a lot of happening on screen (other skaters, cars, peds) but it definitely does not detract from the game...my game plays smooth as butter 99.2% of the time....i dunno what to say.
Paul @ Oct 25th 2007 2:06PM
It's the lazy dev's and not the system to blame here guys. Say what you want about some of the issues Warhawk has had but lag definitely isn't one of them. That is as fast paced, timing sensitive game as you can imagine and it's virtually flawless from a framerate and lag perspective.
Why can't a superb dev like Konami figure this out as well? The Xbox and PS3 are DIFFERENT, when are dev's going to quit whining while trying to make the games the same on both systems and just start building games for each system?
michael @ Oct 25th 2007 2:12PM
Frank
Not to flame or anything, but if I came to your job and told you to do something different and in a much harder way with no real benefits (small install base so far . . . ) would you do it? Or would you continue to do it the same way you have been?
Developers aren't lazy, they work hard to get games done, the problem is that cost benefit scale has not tipped in favor of developing only on the PS3 yet, it will, but until then it is what it is. I had been very against the ps3 for a long time (for some reason), now I cannot wait to get one as soon as MGS4 comes out. And I think soon after that Developers will see its benefits, and that price drop will help too.
SirBlazeAlot @ Oct 25th 2007 2:12PM
And hey, buy FIFA....PES sucks balls. Not a joke, I am dead serious...people try to hype this game up, and that hype is just shot down....FIFA for the win.
Rwing90 @ Oct 25th 2007 2:14PM
I've seen this argument a few times and wonder why is it that developers are "lazy"? Isn't it more likely that it is just a combination of a learning curve and internal asset allocation? If you already know how to code for a PC and if, as suggested, an Xbox is really just a PC anyway, how many assets (people and man hours) do you tie up learning a new system versus spending those assets on (Xbox) games that can get out faster and earning the company revenue?
I want to see the PS3 succeed but I will compliment MS on this front. From a business perspective they were more developer friendly this time around by giving them a system that leveraged their already in place business assets. Developers are still businesses after all, I wonder if sometimes we forget this when claiming laziness on their part. From a gamer perspective that might, unfortunately, give us just "more of the same" in terms of games, but I can understand it from a 'bottom line' perspective.
russ99 @ Oct 25th 2007 2:15PM
Let's face it, there's only two ways developers will drop this 360 porting technique, which is more cost-effective and easier for them to do.
First is if Sony finds some way to either make porting work easier and less expensive, while maintaining a high quality in the final result; or better yet release developer tools that PC/360 coders have an easier time working with.
Second (more likely) is if users don't buy games that are buggy or are straight quick and dirty ports. That is what forced EA to drop the reduce framerates for PS3 games, and will also force developers to ensure the games they do port are high quality.
MrH @ Oct 25th 2007 2:57PM
I dont think the PS3 version is ported.
Ghaleon @ Oct 25th 2007 2:58PM
What a shock

I'll still be getting Pro Evo 2008 tomorrow (and my spiffy new PS3 as well), hopefully Konami will get a patch out soon so that I can kick ass WORLDWIDE!!
rawd @ Oct 25th 2007 4:05PM
I really don't see how people like PES better Fifa. It feels like such an arcade kids game. *shrug* I've always give the newest PES a try every time to see if I will like it, and I'm bored of it within minutes.
Popfrogs @ Oct 25th 2007 4:21PM
It's almost funny how much trouble Japanese developers are having with a homegrown console. Capcom and Konami both are struggling with the PS3 like never before. I guess that's what happens when you throw your hat in the Microsoft ring..Sony pays more attention to its first-party dev teams and they make much better games as a result.
Sony is basically being Nintendo at this point, and by that I mean making all the best games for their console in house. I can't blame them, seeing how badly the third parties are doing and how reluctant they are to join the party. Next year, when MGS4 and FFXIII drop, we'll see Konami and Capcom wake up to the future.
Zoesch @ Oct 25th 2007 5:48PM
Porting from the 360 to the PS3 is never going to be trivial considering how the 360 relies on DirectX and how DirectX is anything but portable
Popfrogs @ Oct 25th 2007 5:55PM
@29: You make a good point. Microsoft, being Microsoft, has gone 100% proprietary with their console from every possible angle. Custom controller ports, custom development kit (directx), custom wireless, you name it.
Sony, on the other hand, has shocked me by going 100% open with the PS3. Standard bluetooth, standard wifi, standard USB ports, memory card reader, system libraries using OpenGL and other open source technologies (check the details under System on the PS3). All this means it can run Linux, but more than that, it means that devs working from a PS3 source can easily port to other platforms. OpenGL to DirectX isn't nearly as hard as DirectX to OpenGL.
Ian @ Oct 25th 2007 6:13PM
Seabass must be pondering his fate with Konami. If I were him I'd have cleared my desk, gone home and typed up my resignation by now.
Ian @ Oct 25th 2007 6:22PM
If I were Konami I'd be looking at Seabass and offering up the ever popular choice "Pick a window!".
Starpaws @ Oct 25th 2007 8:45PM
I think it is harsh to say Konami are lazy...in interviews Seabass have actually been fairly supportive and receptive to new challeges. In fact surely the hard work of games design should be in the games themselves and not the code beneath them unless one is doing something really ambitious with AI or something similar. It is expensive to adapt and resources and experience take time to accumulate. PS3 is a complex machine...but I do feel that teething troubles will be ironed out in time as well as reap new benefits for the console. Microsoft has the advantage of (for all intents and purposes) owning the PC market with the leading operating systems and tools. I think it is more important for sony to establish themselves as a strong software brand as that alone will inspire consumer confidence...give it a year I think it will be a different market.
Sony is already working on increasing support. I still think its a shame that they did not open up the ram on the machine... I think that might turn out to be one of the largest issues.
animekid3515 @ Oct 25th 2007 10:53PM
i dont have time for this game, my friends and i are training on resistance and warhawk every chance we get, its great to not have 50+ games and suck at all of them, i love having 2 high quality well made games i can practice on more and more, but too bad guitar hero 3 is coming out in a month (im in australia) it'll completely throw off my resistance and warhawk skill. i havent played motorstorm in a while, i think it's time for an online racing spree!!!!
ill trooper @ Oct 26th 2007 1:20AM
It's getting harder and harder to defend this machine. Very disappointing.
reakt @ Oct 26th 2007 4:11AM
At least Konami have admitted the problem and are prepared to do something about it and quickly. I wish I could say the same for EA and their "skate". This game is frustrating to play off-line and impossible to play on-line.
billster @ Oct 26th 2007 4:38AM
Strange IGN glossed over the frame rate issue when they are a sponser in the game. The in game cutsecens are bad enough online is just unplayable. I have had my copy since tuesday night and I can say online is far better now!!!!
Very dissapointed
Plat @ Oct 26th 2007 12:10PM
we can't blame the developer, they are just doing a job. We can say that 360 is like a PC, and PS3 is not a PC, but we have to accept the fact that 360 is alot easier and faster to develop, and PS3 is slower and harder. Until Sony can figure out a way to help developer to make PS3 game easier, this will continue.
Whenever Sony has an exclusive title, they usually run fine and look great, but if the title is cross-platform, 360 is far better in everyway. PES2008 is one of many examples.
I am just getting very tired of all of half doodoo game.
All in all, I think the main problem is, they want to release all version of the game at the same time if possible, and 360 version always beat them to it, therefore, they really have no other way but to release a game that has issue.

iv just bought pes 2009 on ps3 i put reg code in but were do i get a password i made 1 up n it keeps saying error accured please help
MGSteve @ Oct 27th 2007 1:59PM
@37 - I thought that too.
Very, very dissapointed at PES2008, not only the framerate issue, but at the game as a whole. So much so, I think I'll stick to PES 6 on the PS2.
B1gC72 @ Oct 28th 2007 9:15PM
i don't know why developers can't see that you really can't port a 360 game to the PS3 and get good results (the majority of the time). the architectures are way too different. PS3 exclusives look and play absolutely amazing, while anything ported seems to suffer. this stems form lazy developers since the first party/exclusive guys show it can be done. they have to develop for them separately or they just might aid in helping the PS3 fail.
Paul @ Nov 1st 2007 5:01PM
The funny thing here is. I just talked to my friend in England who has this game now and he says he hasn't seen a single issue while playing online....Very interesting.
