i'm getting one for my dorm room for sure.
ruibing @ Oct 26th 2007 12:11PM
If I didn't already have one, I would definitely get this. It's a steal at $399, just think of it as the cost of a budget PC, but can run next gen games for years to come without an upgrade or any other enhancements.
insane257 @ Oct 26th 2007 12:12PM
Quite frankly, it's a great deal. If you really wanted backwards compatability, buy a damn PS2. Why on earth would you buy a PS3 to play your PS2 games? You're lucky the 3 big gaming cooperations even allowed backwards compatability to go ahead. I mean, hardly anyone complained the SNES couldn't play NES games...
A blu ray player + PS3 with a 40gb hard drive for $399 is a bargain.
Expect HUGE sales this christmas :)
KWRNTND @ Oct 26th 2007 12:13PM
I am going to get a PS3 soon, but I am staying far away from the 40GB model. I'd rather pay the same (Toys "R" Us) for the 20GB version, and then when I need it I will upgrade the hard drive with something even better than the 80GB. This way I get to keep the hardware emulated emotion chip for backward compatability, and I get a cheaper price. It's a win, win.

Not me got the Full Price 60GB back in Feb b4 any price drops and quite glad I did
poprocker @ Oct 26th 2007 12:22PM
I want one. I'm about to be on my 3rd 360 as my 2nd one is currently dying. It's also LOUD as Heck!!
mccomber @ Oct 26th 2007 12:28PM
I'd probably go with this if I was in the market at this point, would have kept my ps2 and just hit Newegg for a big hard drive.
gar @ Oct 26th 2007 12:38PM
I'm getting one on Nov 2nd. It's finally down to a pricepoint that I'm willing to accept.
dannyCage @ Oct 26th 2007 2:03PM
Im getting one in November, good price and Assassin Creed a great combination
Revel Faust @ Oct 26th 2007 12:52PM
Im happy with my 60GB, kthx
But still, more sells for sony is always a good thing.
rawd @ Oct 26th 2007 1:07PM
Yes, im getting one in Spring , to go with my Bravia 52XBR4
Landonkeywest @ Oct 26th 2007 1:16PM
I have the 60gb System and I love it. If this one had been available I would have bought it though. Hard Drives are easily upgradeable and even though I have full backward compatibility, I only used it once and now I just play my PS3 games. The included WiFi is a big deal if you plan on using it as a media center. It wasn't part of my original plan, but man it's awesome!
gumby @ Oct 26th 2007 1:15PM
i like my 60gb, got it after the price drop and am loving it. I had a xbox last gen so it was important for me to be able to play ps2 games that i missed out on.
hovan316 @ Oct 26th 2007 1:31PM
I believe the 40G PS3's will see like hot cakes!
ChillyWilly @ Oct 26th 2007 1:51PM
Already own a PS3 60gb model and glad I got it before it went away. But if you need a Blu-Ray player, this is the best deal on one now.
As for backwards compatibility, it's important to me. I have a large library of PS2 games and don't want to have another game system hooked up to the TV just to play older games.

In the UK the 60GB got dropped to £349 just as the £299 40GB was launched. At the moment everyone is buying the new-price 60GB at an increased rate (+ 178%)...including me, last week.
Perhaps this is just people always intent on getting the 60GB and waiting for that first drop (that describes me perfectly) whereas the 40GB at £299 will attract those people "um'ing" and "ah'ing" about buying one and those not wanting to stretch to £349 this holiday season.
Have to say to the guy who said his 360 is loud: the PS3 ain't exactly the quitest console either - non stop fan.....
Dru @ Oct 26th 2007 2:06PM
Not for me, I'd still go with the 80gig if I hadn't gotten a 60GB last December since I would want B/C. I wouldn't mind keeping the PS2 around if I had to, but one less mess under the Plasma is nice. I love my PS3!
Dru @ Oct 26th 2007 2:15PM
@15 I presume you've heard a 360 in action? Nothing, well except for a fighter jet taking off, sounds as loud as a 360. No piece of electronics should make a noise like that. Maybe they've gotten better? A friend of mine has gone through 3 of them and they all sound the same. BTW, the only time my PS3 gets even remotely loud is when Folding is running.
FM @ Oct 26th 2007 3:30PM
I've just pre-ordered one at Amazon. Looks like it'll be a nice PSWii Xmas.
jeff masson @ Oct 26th 2007 2:43PM
in the uk its not really any point all the big shops are selling it at the same price give or take £10 as the 60gb both with 3 games for £350 i would buy the 60gb all day long
but if it dose bring more users this can only be good and when sony kill of the second xbox we will get all the games
Algernon @ Oct 26th 2007 2:53PM
Not saying BC is extremely important for me, but id rather have that option when one day i want to play FF 7 or MGS or GOW. I'll pass on the 40 gig and get the 60 or 80 gig soon enough
hersh @ Oct 26th 2007 3:12PM
So I have a PS3 question does the system output 1080i over component or only over HDMI I ask about 1080i because that is all my big screen Hitachi outputs.
Thanx

"Have to say to the guy who said his 360 is loud: the PS3 ain't exactly the quitest console either - non stop fan....."
Do you know how loud his system currently is? The fact that he mentioned it means it must be louder than his PS3. I play my friend's 360 all the time. I don't think under normal conditions that's it's loud, but if it were going bad, who knows, it may sound like a vaccum cleaner to him.
The 40 GB deal is great for those who don't own or plan to play retro games, but if I didn't already have a 60 GB I'd go for either the 20 or the 80 GB for BC. Games like GoW, R&C and a few of the classics still appeal to me once in a while.
ScottB @ Oct 26th 2007 4:53PM
I was going to wait for this 40GB unit, but I went and picked up the 60GB at walmart.com for 499. It came with a free bluetooth remote and free warhawk. Seeing as I was going to pick up the 399 system and warhawk anyway the price was almost the same. And I guess I get BC too, even if I will almost never use it.
mattclarkie @ Oct 27th 2007 11:55AM
If you want a cheap PS3 get the 40gb, but if you want the shiny semi- BC one do what we did in Europe and get them fast, most stores have sold-out or are down to the last few in Europe, so when they pull them in the US I expect they will go fast
mattclarkie @ Oct 27th 2007 12:00PM
As someone that owns both a PS3 and 360 I have to say WTF. I walk into the room with the PS3 on and I can't hear it. The HDD and Blu-ray drive make some noise but the fans are silent or as near as.
I walk into the room with the 360 on and I am deafened, it is almost lound enough to ruin games. It actually drowns out my PC and that is noisey.
I do have a launch console, so that makes it louder, and when it isn't using the DVD drive it is quieter, but still loud.
Maybe you have a bad PS3, but
j @ Oct 30th 2007 3:46AM
This 40 gb is meant to silence all the naysayers who keep complaining that the ps3 is too expensive; this is the compromise to reach that price point that doesn't really affect the usability of the system.
After all...I'll never be letting go of my special ps2 until it breaks. ;) Without it, there would be no AO version of Manhunt 2.
