Reggie Fils-Aime thinks LittleBigPlanet is on the wrong console

Now, color us crazy, but is Fils-Aime implying that LittleBigPlanet would serve audiences better on the Wii? He does realize the graphics would get a pretty noticeable downgrade and that there needs to be a very open, accessible, and powerful online platform behind the game, right? No? Oh well. Sure, it may seem like it fits in with the casual crowd more, but the casual crowd also wouldn't build a level and upload it for their friends to play. What do you guys think? Is the PS3 the right platform for LittleBigPlanet or not?

Physics, Graphics, Online Presentation, and overall experience cannot be achieved on the wii.. i have a wii and i think its great for minigames and FPS but not a Community Game
Toby @ Oct 29th 2007 2:57PM
The Wii online community is a joke, LBP would fail if it was on that platform. Plus, the physics would also get a downgrade, since the two gamecubes duct taped together cant handle too much. My poor wii hasnt been on in months tho, so maybe it does need a decent game =\

Little Big Planet: The Game Nintendo Wish they had Made.
proArchy @ Oct 29th 2007 3:02PM
i would say he's a bit jealous that with such a fresh idea in the wii hardware, all its wound up being is a bunch of mini-games. i also think he's a bit delusional saying the market needs more 1st person shooters. its already saturated with them and most of them are all the same. bioshock and portal being obvious exceptions. LittleBigPlanet is on EXACTLY the right console, it'll blow minds for sure.
Solace @ Oct 29th 2007 3:02PM
who knew reggie had green eyes (of envy).
isn't this the sort of hubris that brought nintendo down the first time?
Dolphis @ Oct 29th 2007 3:04PM
You're already getting a pretty big salary as it is buddy, let it go. Without a doubt, LBP is right for the PS3. The Wii has no real storage system to begins with, so user created content uploads would be limited @ best, plus their online infastructure is not set up to handle LBP IMHO. Plus the Wii is just barely more powerful than the GC, so all those pretty colors and shapes would be dumbed down BIG time. Live is a structured and set service, but MS wont allow user-created... anything lol. I know people say the 360 is as powerful as the PS3, but I really doubt the 360 could pull LBP off.
LordAbsu @ Oct 29th 2007 3:05PM
My experience with my Wii's online capabilities has been largely underwhelming so far, and that's pretty disappointing to someone who was looking forward to said capabilities.
So, yeah, my PS3 set me back 600 dollars: that's, like, 350 over what I payed for my Wii.
(looks at wii gathering dust since metroid prime 3 got beaten...)
But you know what?
(looks at ps3 downloading all sorts of movies and demos, gets urge to play ratchet and clank's latest)
You get what you pay for.
organic_shadow @ Oct 29th 2007 3:10PM
I think this is evidence of their misunderstanding of the need for online and horsepower in a console. Sure, the concept of the game and the target audience go together hand-in-hand to a degree, but beyond that it's not possible on a Nintendo console.
Expect them to make some sort of make-your-own-levels type of sandbox game soon, but not feature all of the online functionality and pizazz that LBP has.
If you ask me I think there are a lot of Wii games that are on the wrong console, or are headed to the wrong console. I'm getting pretty tired of seeing great series getting tarded down for Wii.
Bob @ Oct 29th 2007 3:11PM
Littlebigplanet is only a game for the PS3...if there was a Wii version, or it was on the Wii, it would be craptacular imo. The Wii, imo once again, is a fad. Once people realize there's nothing else to play, it will die off, and hard. It's funny how people critize the PS3 for lack of games, yet the Wii has a lack too, but do people complain? Nope.
Just because something sells well for a year, does not mean it will continue to do so. Look at the Tickle Me Elmo....that thing sold like hotcakes when it came out...now....pfft...barely anyone gave a crap about TMX Elmo. Poor example, but you get my point
hovan316 @ Oct 29th 2007 3:11PM
He's just a jealous loser...
Prophestus @ Oct 31st 2007 1:15PM
There is no reasoning with Wii fans. Fanboys in general are lame, but ugh.
Solid Snake @ Oct 29th 2007 3:27PM
I have to say Reggie got it right this time. As much as I love my PS3, I think the LittleBigPlanet makes a lot more sense on the Wii.
First of all, the Wii appeals to more "kiddie"-type players, and LBP is definitely a kidde kind of game. Trust me that no one including myself in my high school is going to play this game (or at least admit to it!).
Secondly, having seen the demonstration from E3 (I think it was) and subsequent videos on gametrailers.com, I have to say this game would probably benefit from using a controller like the Wiimote. It just makes sense.
Overall, I wouldn't be bothered if this game went to the Wii since I would never buy some a lame kiddie game anyway, but if I was 8 years old, I would definitely want LBP on the Wii instead.
Cookie Monster @ Oct 29th 2007 3:19PM
Om nom nom nom!!!!
I think Reggie doesnt seem to belong to Nintendo...
I think he belongs with me...
in the trash!
AWWWWM-num-num-num-num...
ComicShaman @ Oct 29th 2007 3:21PM
I'm sure Sony is happy for the free advertising, Reggie! Sony has been quite jazzed about this title, but it's sure nice to get that special boost from a competitor.
Sure, the backhanded endorsement is delivered with a sneering slam, but who cares? Now that Nintendo has captured the lead in sales with the Wii, they've gone back to trash-talking like a WWE wrestler. Just like Sony did when they were on top. Just like Microsoft does all the time, too. Hell, even Nokia tried trash-talking before the N-Gage became the biggest joke in gaming this decade (barring the Phantom, which never actually existed).
Arrogance. It's not just for breakfast anymore.
cmsjustin @ Oct 29th 2007 3:29PM
After owning a 360 for a few months, and seeing Sony make one more poor decision when I think they've hit their bottom, I'm convinced the 360 is the best console for every game I would ever want to play on my TV. I think the only reason I haven't sold my PS3 is so I can play LittleBigPlanet.
WishMeWell @ Oct 29th 2007 3:24PM
The PS3 is the perfect console for LittleBigPlanet...im not even goin to say why because everyone knows why
Solace @ Oct 29th 2007 3:25PM
@Solid Snake
maybe no one in your HS would play this, but me and all my friends are dying to play this, especially with the online co-op level creator, and we're all in our late 20s, early 30s.
not everyone who CAN buy "M" rated games ONLY plays "M" rated games. ;)
comtar @ Oct 29th 2007 3:30PM
I like the Wii alot so far, but Little Big Planet is being Published by Sony. So I'm a little confused why he says Little Big Planet is being made on the wrong console, what does he expect Sony to say "Wow this game is wrong console, let's put it on the Wii instead so we can continue to cater to hardcore gaming junkies and continue to lose exclusives."
I mean yeah, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were once the figureheads to Sony back in the PSX days, and now both are on the Wii. But really, how many Sony exclusives or licenses do they think they can take?
chris ciancanelli @ Oct 29th 2007 3:28PM
solid snake, there are other gamers out there that are not just in high school. I would love to see a "kiddy" pick up LBP and figure it out by creating his/her own content. It may have the look of a game for the younger crowd, but so does Wii Sports, and that's about the only thing that people are playing on their Wii with great consistency, no matter what age spectrum you look at.
LBP is getting attention from anyone who has played it in the media, and there are a lot of people out there that wanna give it a whirl just as well.
HAAS599 @ Oct 29th 2007 3:30PM
@10
We get your point, but the fact is LittleBigPlanet on the weeeeeee would not be LittleBigPlanet, it would be MiniLittlePlanet.
Dont forget about the PS3 sixaxis contoller and soon to be released DS3.
This game is right where it should be.
HAAS599 @ Oct 29th 2007 3:37PM
oops!
my comment was meant for solid snake
thats #15
Jim @ Oct 29th 2007 3:40PM
I appreciate his honesty & am surprised by it- although that doesnt change the fact that LBP would suck on the Wii!
junker @ Oct 29th 2007 3:42PM
@justin
i'm curious what poor decision they have made recently? it seems since the recent price cut almost everyone is talking about getting one. that and the line up of games before this christmas and then after the new year makes me think the lack of games bitch that people have with the ps3 is gonna disappear. so you'll have games just as good as the 360's games that you cant play on the PC like most of their games. and you can pick up a ps3 for alot cheaper than a decent 360(arcade is a joke), plus ps3 has a ton of stuff built right into it that no other console can touch.
Jeff @ Oct 29th 2007 3:45PM
I agree. I know it's graphics over gameplay, but one of the nicest things about LBP is its' gorgeous visuals. If it was on the Wii then those graphics would look worse than an Xbox 1 game. And the Wii's CPU is basically the same as the Gamecube's CPU, only clocked a bit higher. So then say bye to that physics system on the Wii version.
This game would be better for the casual crowd, but that crowd won't upload their own levels. And the Wii's online service is pathetic at best. I mean, friend codes?
Jeff @ Oct 29th 2007 3:46PM
Oops, I meant gameplay over graphics.
J17 @ Oct 29th 2007 3:46PM
@solidsnake
Last time I checked everyone at my work got the ps3 just for LBP and we are all in our late mid 20's early 30's.
Zampano @ Oct 29th 2007 3:48PM
Personally, I thought the second they changed the name of the console from Revolution to Wii, they should have just added a 'k' to the end. Wiik.
Bob @ Oct 29th 2007 3:51PM
@Zampano
I agree with you so much. When I heard "Nintendo Revolution" I thought, oh man, this is going to rule. The second I heard it was called "Wii", I knew I'd never buy it. Terrible name imo.
flipah @ Oct 29th 2007 3:57PM
How about this Reggie: you give Sony the rights to support the bluetooth Wii remote & controllers and possibility to play all wii games on the PS3 in exchange for LBP. ;-D its a win win situation. Nintendo get royalties over each Playstation sold because of the original controller. :-D This will also lead to more innovated games with better gfx on the PS3-plattform.. anyone? :-)
Jevanzz @ Oct 29th 2007 3:59PM
Oh hell no's! The first time I saw this game, I thought, "That's everything that Nintendo with the Wii are trying to achieve, and Sony just nailed it." If it did come out on the Wii, it'd be a huge seller, but it would be so lame compared to it being on PS3, where it belongs!
Bryant @ Oct 29th 2007 4:17PM
LOL.
matthew_neitzer @ Oct 29th 2007 4:40PM
It makes me wonder how in depth the level editor for brawl is going to be. I also wonder if it is their answer to LBP. Think about it. They changed their release date to early next year which I think is when LBP is coming out, and you will have the ability to upload levels. I dunno, lol
Ghaleon @ Oct 29th 2007 5:14PM
All he meant was it looks like a cool, original game, something the Playstation 3 isn't really known for yet.
sicklesdawg @ Oct 29th 2007 5:15PM
SO MANY Miyamoto bots *runs*
Andy @ Oct 29th 2007 5:24PM
For the audience its better on the Wii.
For the console its much more suited to PS3. (isn't every game except harry potter?)
Andy @ Oct 29th 2007 5:26PM
@25
Thats the stupidest idea I've ever heard.
Popfrogs @ Oct 29th 2007 5:34PM
@32: I've heard stupider ideas before, but his was pretty dumb.
LBP belongs on the PS3. It's funny to see a big shot from Nintendo pointing at something PS3 exclusive saying "Want". Sorry Reggie, your little Wii doesn't have the strength to run the music routine for LBP, let alone the physics engine.
Larz @ Oct 29th 2007 6:11PM
That's dumb. Both Nintendo and Sony have always been making crazy, weird, new things.
Like EyeToy, Fishing rods, Mic-singing games, RE chainsaw, Onimusha sword, Linux, Keyboard+Mouse support, Buzz, and newer stuff like Eye of Judgment, Home, etc.
DrunkRaba @ Oct 29th 2007 6:15PM
LBP is just one of the many awesome games I am happy to purchase in the future, for my PS3 and I just don't see the game working as it is now, with all of its sophistication, working on the Wii. I think this game just goes to show that SONY is attempting to appeal to all demographics with their games and is doing a pretty good job at it finally.
ruibing @ Oct 29th 2007 6:45PM
The game is being funded and published by SCE, so Sony owns the rights to the game. It's just like Halo and PRG for the 360, even though the developers became neutral, damn MS still owns the rights to those franchise. No way is LBP ever going to another platform, except maybe another PS one.
Dean Longmore @ Oct 29th 2007 7:48PM
PS3 is the only console it could even work on. xbox2 doesnt have a mandatory HDD, so user created levels are worthless. Everything this game is built on outlines the advantages of the PS3.
I think what nintendo are really saying is 'we would like some third party games... any third party games please!'
Jay @ Oct 29th 2007 6:47PM
He's just seen the workups for 'Cooking Mama 2' and said "Oh ****! We're dead".
proArchy @ Oct 29th 2007 7:00PM
yes, it looks like a very cutesy game, but the main intended audience for LBP is NOT children. true they are included in the demographic along with the developer's mother, but it is mostly for adults with highly creative minds, some degree of mathmatical comprehension, and a burning desire to break a game that the developer has basically handed you the keys to. the thing is that everyone in the audience will benefit from other's creations. it seems to me like you could play new downloaded content for months without ever creating anything yourself. an infinite amount of puzzle/level variations all made by users.
karamo17 @ Oct 29th 2007 7:49PM
LBP is on the right platform because his platform can't handle everything that LBP does
John @ Oct 29th 2007 8:43PM
Good call, Nick. Plenty of Wii owners would accept this with last-gen graphics, but the infrastructure is not there to support it. Can't see that it would be smart for Sony to license it, either.
Basically, this is a boss admitting a win to Sony (grudgingly, of course).
Consolcwby @ Oct 29th 2007 11:32PM
LBP is going to be a genre busting/defining kind of game - the kind of thing Nintendo USED to do in the past. But present innovation in gameplay is STILL firmly in Sony's grasp. No kidding Nintendo wants it! =D I mean, they can't even make another freakin' Punch-Out game (which old-time fans want), let alone something incredibly original and fun. Call me a fanboy all you want, but all I know is this: For the past 10 years Sony has hit all the right tones for creating a more creative approach for games.
Oh, and for all those who think LPB is going to be a romper-room exhibit: The only reason why you believe it is not 'mature' enough for you is really because you are still too 'immature' for such a game. Only someone who is insecure and immature would worry about what other people would think... it's only a freakin' VIDEOGAME. And we all know what so-called 'adults' think about those, right?... I swear, kids nowadays... betcha they would call Commander Keen and Jazz Jackrabbit 'kiddie games'! =S
I am 37 years old, and I cannot wait to play LPB. It is a game. I am a gamer. 'Nuff said.
Emrah @ Oct 30th 2007 1:05AM
I am not sure if Wii could handle the intricate physics of LTB realtime. It has some quite complex physics systems going for it that can be defined by the player.
Hobo Joe @ Oct 30th 2007 1:58AM
LBP is great for the PS3, but I think this article's reasons for it not working on the Wii are without merit. This would be good fun on the N64 if they did it right. I'd play the game on the Wii and the PS3 if it were out on both.
A game like this doesn't much require a particularly fancy graphical system (but god bless it for having one), and I think a lot of people underestimate the casual gaming crowd when it comes to online stuff. We're talking about people who use the internet to talk to other people, and who get enough of a kick out of things like LBP that they'd have other people get a kick out of stuff that they've made.
It's weird being a neutral party in cross-console debates.
Starfire @ Oct 30th 2007 2:34AM
Let me see- squeeze it onto the Wii because it's a 'kid's' game, get rid of the online sharing and hi-res graphics because it's a kid's game, it shouldn't be on a Playstation because it's a kid's game. Is this what's called 'console stereotyping'? Ridiculous!
animekid3515 @ Oct 30th 2007 8:15AM
its not a kid's game, it LOOKS kiddy, but a kids game, usually sucks because kids are quite easily amused with videogames, i dont think many gaming kids have the mental power to do some of the levels I'm expecting to be made, a lot of ps3 owners are smart and creative (at least they are where i live) but yahtzee (the guy who does the zero punctuation reviews) will hopefully review littlebigplanet and give it all the slack he gave psychonauts. as they seem very similar somehow.
